Hello and welcome to the October edition of Inside Shoreham

and Southwick magazine.

Well, here we are into the month where we can expect some

changeability and unpredictableness in the weather and those

long dark nights are really starting to draw in. We are very lucky

being on the South coast since we do get some warm, crisp days,

which I really love. Of course, we can also have a cooler breeze

and it can be a bit wetter, and the sun sets earlier and evenings

draw in, but October is still a great autumnal month.

In this month, we have Halloween or All Hallows' Eve. As in

the Celtic festival of Samhain, it was a time to celebrate the end

of harvest time in the Gaelic culture. For many families with kids

it is hollowing out pumpkins or having dressing up parties and

maybe trick or treating – which has really caught on in the

past years.

In this months issue we have some local news on local

charities as well as the new drop in centre in Southwick. You can

also read the latest article our local community support police.

This month Chief Inspector Asser writes about the possibility of

Adur and Worthing Police merging. Find out more on page 8.

What is the history behind the Shoreham Fire Station? If you

want to fi nd out more then read Judy Uptons latest article on

page 24. Also have a look at our what’s guide to see if there are

any local activities you would like to participate in and as listings

are free and let us know about any events you are involved with

so we can let others know.

And as always we have lots of great local businesses ready to

make your life that bit easier.

On that note, have a great month.

Angela

Last month, adur Petanque Club played host to 14 doubles teams who attended the Charity Open held in aid of The

Sussex Air Ambulance. All proceeds, including a super raffle were donated to the S.A.A. A cheque for £226 was presented by County Councillor Brian Coomber to aid this worthy cause. The winners Tony & Derick from the Handcross P.C. will have their names inscribed on The Peter Davey Cup to record their outstanding achievement. The highest placed pair from Adur P.C. were Ray & Noman who finished in 2nd place

The Adur Club is to hold its final 'Open' triples tournament of the season at Lancing Manor Park on 4 October next. Part of the proceeds are to be allocated to a fund being raised in order to support the Ladies Triples Team representing England at the FIPJP World Championship for Women to be held in Thailand. Our own Debbie Elcome is a member of that team. The Club wishes them every success in their endeavours. Further info from Albert (Chairman) 01903-776387 or www.adurpetanque.co.uk

Petanque Club raises money for Sussex Air Ambulance

Local pubs raise £2100 for Lifeboat House in a series of charity events with RNLI and Shoreham Fire Brigade

the 2nd annuaL Portslade and Southwick charity trophy fundraiser,

organised by landlords Chris Pobjoy of The Romans, Southwick, and Steve Bennett from the Stanley Arms, Portslade was held on Saturday 29th August.

The aim of the event was to raise funds for the new Shoreham Lifeboat House.

The event took the form of a football match between both pubs. The match was won by The Romans on penalties.

This was followed by a four-way tug of war between both pubs, the RNLI and the Shoreham Fire Brigade. In the final The Romans beat the RNLI (big surprise). Afterwards everyone went back to the hosts pub – this year The Romans. What followed was a series of fundraisers...BBQ, Raffle and Auction...this raised a fantastic £2,100.

The landlords, Chris Pobjoy and Steve Bennett, want to thank all for their support and look forward to next years third annual charity event.

autumn is in full swing by now. Colourful leaves transform the trees and as the nights

draw in, animals and insects begin their winter hibernation.

Wildlife Watching – FungiA warm wet autumn results in a wonderful array of mushrooms and toadstools. Woodlands, both deciduous and coniferous, and old pastures are the best places to find fungi. However they can be found everywhere – in parks, gardens and on lawns. The mushrooms and toadstools visible at this time of year are the fruiting bodies. The mycelium or main part of the fungus is hidden from view in the ground or in rotting matter. Fungi play a vital role in

breaking down organic material, including dead leaf litter and dead animals, as they return the resulting nutrients back to the soil for plants to re-use.

Autumn ColourAutumn produces some of nature’s most vibrant colours with deciduous trees and shrubs dropping leaves by a process known as senescence. As chlorophyll, the green pigment in leaves, starts to break down, other pigments show through to give yellows and oranges, reds, blues and purples. Ideal conditions for the best autumn colours are sunny days followed by crisp, cold nights but one stormy night can easily strip hedgerows and woodlands of leaves at this time of year and change the whole look of the landscape.

A message from Chief Inspector Asser. An exciting opportunity to merge both Worthing and Adur police has presented itself, which is currently subject of a review. Our district council has already merged some of the services provided and Sussex Police is seeking to gain similar benefi ts in merging both the districts under a single district commander, within the next few months.

The amalgamation of the districts represents an opportunity in making best use of the resources available to us and in delivering a fi rst class service to the residents of both Worthing and Adur. I, as the District Commander for both districts, seek to reduce crime on the districts and to focus on those crimes you and other residents tell us are important to the community.

James AsserDistrict Commander, Adur

New ScamsThere have been at least two new scam letters circulating to my knowledge and the details are as follows.

The Council is aware of some scams across the South East where residents receive a telephone call from a person pretending to work for the local borough council. They are told they have either paid too much council tax and they are entitled to a rebate or that they have not paid enough and need to pay more or they will be fi ned. The caller then asks for bank details.

Anyone who receives these calls is being advised to not give out any personal information and report it to Consumer Direct 08454 040506 and to use the Consumer DIrect website (link opens in a new window) for practical advice and support

The second was an email inviting me to claim a refund from HM revenue and customs.

I was suspicious, the second part was asking for my credit card details. I checked on the HM customs website and found the following: http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/security/examples.htm

Your CommunitY needs you. You have probably heard of the Lions

Club, the biggest service organisation in the world. They are inviting you to go along and fi nd out more about who they are and what they do.

The Lions have been in existence in Adur for over 50 years and has raised thousands of pounds for national and international causes. However, much

of their time is spent helping those around us with small things that can make an enormous difference to their lives. Perhaps driving elderly people to a Christmas dinner or a coach trip out with a cream tea, donating money for dressing up clothes to a local playgroup or providing a stair gate to a needy parent

Aside from fund raising they also

enjoy a good social scene with various activities ranging from quizzes, theatre trips, skittles and wine tasting to learning to play croquet, a surprisingly fun evening for all who took part. Fund raising can also be fun: they run a Greyhound Charity night once a year and have run the Transport Fayre at Buckingham Park, Shoreham for the last 32 years. Both of these require a lot of organising but are also enjoyable for all involved.

Adur East Lions are hoping that some more local people who may have an hour or so to spare every couple of weeks could help them to make a difference to our local community. If you would like to get involved do give them a call. They welcome new faces, whatever age you are and even if you only have a little time to spare

Go along and see what they have to offer. You might enjoy being a Lion and fi nd it a rewarding experience.

They will be holding an informal information evening (with nibbles) in the Function Room at the Royal George Pub, Upper Shoreham Road (opp. Tescos, Holmbush). To fi nd out more, in a relaxed atmosphere, please contact any of the Lion members below or email for further information to: [email protected] telephone Lion Chris Hilliard 01273 885186, Lion John Taylor 01273 887339 or Lion Val Roberts 01903 751259 to let them know you are coming along.YOU ARE INVITED TO JOIN THEM ON FRIDAY 23RD OCTOBER at the Royal George 7pm.dur East Lions Club Charity Trust is a Registered Charity No.1081845.

reCent statistiCs from the National Association of Estate Agents (NAEA) show that fi rst time buyers are returning to

the market. Their August survey shows that that the number of fi rst time buyers rose by 36% in the month. The same month last year saw a rise of 8%. The NAEA see this as a positive sign for the market.

The average number of house-hunters decreased from 292 in July to 238 in August, something the NAEA have put down to the holiday season. The average number of houses available for sale also rose from 59 in July to 64 in August. The number of house sales agreed per branch decreased from an average of nine to eight.

There are always seasonal variations, but in my own experience I have noticed the enquiries from fi rst time buyers have increased. Some have told me that they are fi nding it diffi cult to fi nd a property so although there is the will to buy, it seems that the process can be slow. Many fi rst time buyers have managed to get a deposit together from family, something which makes all the difference in today’s mortgage market. If you have a 15% deposit you will have some choice of deals, although limited. A 25% deposit will give you access to a much wider range of competitive rates.

Are lenders lending?Lenders are offering mortgages, but they seem to be very diffi cult in their requirements. They have tightened their lending policies and there seems to be no leeway. This means that if you are only slightly outside policy, they will to the criteria like glue. Many lenders use online systems, so you could fi nd your application being declined because the loan amount is just a couple of hundred pounds over what they can offer you. A slight tweak can often sort this situation, but they won’t tell you that!

What to do?To get the best chance of actually getting a mortgage offer, it would be wise to speak to a whole of market adviser, one who has access to all the lenders. Not only will they fi nd the best rate for your circumstances, they will place your mortgage with the lender most likely to make an offer to you. An experienced adviser will know what the lender’s policies are, and will deal with any hurdles that come along.

Give yourself the best chanceIf you are applying for a mortgage now, you should be prepared with all of your information upfront. Don’t let them fi nd

something after you have applied, this could throw your whole application. For example, if you have loans or credit cards, fi nd out exactly how much you owe. Have the statements at hand. If you earn bonuses at work, dig out your last twelve months payslips and your last P60, this will help your adviser to fi nd exactly the right lender for you. Don’t be surprised if the lender asks for bank statements, many are doing so at the moment. For whole of market advice on mortgages, please call Claire Cook on 01273 224667. We offer a free initial consultation to Latest Homes readers.

Consumer Champion, WhiCh? is reporting that big brands aren’t always best when it comes to sales and

servicing. This follows research amongst its members to obtain feedback on their experiences when buying and servicing their car. This data reinforces the findings of authoritative motoring website, HonestJohn.co.uk, which revealed that 77% of motorists use the same garage every time they need their car serviced because they know and trust them. And 65% rate a local independent garage as likely to provide the best service. Indeed, local garages came out on top for all aspects of vehicle maintenance – from overall servicing to MOTs, general repairs and tyres.

“Our survey shows that motorists value a local garage or dealer who they can rely on to do a good job. Local independent garages must be doing something right because they come way out on top in all the areas we asked consumers about,” explains Honest John. “With 95% of the respondents to the survey driving their own vehicle rather than a company car, this highlights a very important sector of the car market which, although keen to find the best price, also puts considerable value in long-standing relationships with local garages.

“We were also pleased to see that today’s motorists are no pushover if they feel they haven’t received good service. More than half (57%) said they would take their vehicle back to the garage if they were unhappy with the work with 88% expecting repair or replacement of the faulty part free of charge. And nearly two thirds (61%) said they would go to the local trading standards officer for assistance if they weren’t getting what they thought was the right response from the garage.

“Our survey demonstrates that consumers value trust and quality of service above everything when it comes to car repairs and maintenance. They know what they want from a service and expect some recourse if the job isn’t up to scratch.”

Key Survey DataServicing: Just over half (54%) have their car serviced annually with the local independent garage coming top for servicing at 39%. However, just over 1 in 10 get a family member to service their car, which could present possible safety risks for the driver.

Loyalty definitely counts for car servicing with 77% using the same garage each time because they know and trust them. The majority (55%) paid between £100 and £250 for their car service.

MoT: For annual MoTs, 63% turn to their local independent garage, placing them head and shoulders above the competition. And loyalty was, once again, a key factor with 29% saying they always use the same garage and nearly 1 in 4 (24%) using a garage recommended by family or friends. However, convenience is also an important influence for MoTs with 19% choosing a garage that’s close to home or work.

Tyres: This was the only sector where the retail chains almost out-performed the independent local garage. The independent local garage is the most popular place to go for replacement tyres at 45% closely followed by retail chains such as Kwik Fit or ADT at 41%.

Price is definitely the biggest influence for tyres, with 42% shopping around for the cheapest deal and only 24% going back to the same place they have previously used.

Consumer Rights: A phenomenal 80% of motorists said they feel very or fairly confident when going to a garage for servicing or repairs, with over half (57%) feeling certain that they would be able to take the car back to be repaired free of charge if there were problems with the original work. This indicates that motorists are generally happier with garage service and repair than the volume of complaints suggests. If you are in need of an independent garage to service your car then contact Phil Cook or Steve Rice at Prestige Autotech on 01273 446776. They are located at Hall Business Centre, Dolphin Road, Shoreham, behind DAF Commercial.

i have found “Shorehams’ finest takeaway”, “A real gem in a town with a wide choice”… just two of the compliments

paid to Samins Curry and Tandoori takeaway. I always enjoy a visit to the shop in Middle Road firstly

because I get a discount of 10% but more importantly because of the warm welcome I receive from owners Mo and Qumar Uddin. In these hard times they always wear a smile, perhaps it is from the knowledge that their food is sourced fresh daily from local suppliers and that once a customer you will remain a friend and a customer.

So what is on the menu? Well you will find all of your favourites such as England’s favourite dish, Chicken Tikka Masalla as well as a range of curries to suit all tastes from the richly sauced and mildly spicy Bhuna to the extremely hot Phall. I usually go for the fairly hot madras curry which I find has a superb range of spices and a hot but still tasty feel, it reminds me of my visit to that busy bustling city, a tempting mix of flavour and colour.

Look deeper into the menu and you find unusual delights.

Mixed Thali a meal for two which includes Prawn Puree, Chicken Tikka the wonderful Garlic Chana as well as meat Kurma, Aloo Mushroom, Sag Poneer (A fantastic mix of Indian cheese and Spinach), Pillaw Rice, Nan and Papadums a really splendid feast. The chefs’ specials are listed in the centre of the menu, which is printed in the centre of the magazine. Do store the menu somewhere safe for future use on those special occasions or when you just can’t be bothered to cook.

Samins fine food can be delivered direct to your door, even the drivers are cheerful. Starting this month is the Samins Loyalty card that gives you the chance to get a £10.00 discount on a Samins meal. Every time you order a meal you get a stamp on your loyalty card and after just ten stamps you have earnt your discount.

Try their food tonight and find out why they are so highly thought of in Shoreham, Southwick, Portslade Steyning, Upper Beeding and Lancing.

in the daYs before the existence of the fi re brigade, towns such as Shoreham

had parish-pumps or small manual fi re engines that were manned by volunteers. With the passing of the Watching and Lighting Act of 1835 however, it became a legal requirement for towns and villages to provide a fi re service. In 1847, The Towns Police Clauses Act allowed the purchase of fi re appliances, fi re stations and payment of crew out of the poor rates. From this point fi re brigades began to be set up all over Sussex.

Before the Second World War, there were two separate fi re brigades operating in Adur District. Shoreham Urban District Council maintained theirs in a building beside the old site of their offi ces, while Southwick UDC housed their fi re vehicles and offi ce in Butts Road. In the days before telephones, a person would have to race to the fi re station to raise the alarm. The fi re bell would loudly sound and young boys would run to relay the message to the fi remen who would need to live nearby. By the beginning of the 20th century the advent of a nationwide telephone system meant electric bells could be installed in fi remen’s homes, which could be activated from the fi re station itself.

In 1937 with the threat of war with Germany looming, the Government created the Auxiliary Fire Service. This provided trained part-time fi reman to support the existing brigades. In December 1938, Greystones, a large house on the west side of The Street at Old Shoreham’s caught fi re. The fi re brigade attended but the location of the fi re hydrant was not immediately known and it took 45 minutes to fi nd it. The fi re was caused by an electrical fault and caused extensive damage to the property.

In 1941, following the formation by the government of the National Fire Service, Shoreham and Southwick’s fi re brigades were merged. The Butts Road site was enlarged to house all of their equipment and vehicles. All over the South of England local fi re brigades and the auxiliaries were stretched to full capacity by the amount of fi res and other incidents caused by the wartime aerial bombardment. A national command structure was brought in and West

Sussex became part of Region 12 of the National Fire Service. During the war, German bombs caused a number of fi res in Shoreham including one on the rail bridge which at that time had a gas pipe running along it that burst spectacularly into fl ame.

At the end of the war, local councils wanted the control of their local fi re services back from central government. The government was reluctant to relinquish control however as the national system had worked well. As a compromise, control of local fi re services was passed to the county councils. West Sussex Fire Brigade sited its control headquarters in Worthing. From 1948, a 999 call would go fi rst to a GPO operator who would alert the nearest local fi re station who would then set off their sirens.

On January 1st, 1949, Shoreham fi re brigade were called to Old Shoreham Toll Bridge where in icy conditions and an 80 mph wind, a double-decker bus blew off of the bridge and landed in the mud below. Thankfully it was low tide, nobody was killed and the fi re brigade rescued 11 people.

In December 1954, Shoreham fi re station moved to its present home in Stoney Lane. Although it was active from that point, the offi cial opening was on the 14th May 1955. In 1959 the fi re fi ghters were called to a huge blaze at the Spring Grove laundry in Steyning. As well as Shoreham and Steyning fi re appliances, a water tender from Henfi eld, and pumps from Storrington and Partridge Green were also needed to bring it under control.

By now the county’s 999 calls were

being answered directly by Worthing Fire Control where operators would co-ordinate the incident by ringing the nearest stations who would set off their own alarms and telephone their personnel. In the late 1950s Worthing Fire Control also had a VHF radio system shared with the police, which could put it directly in touch with the drivers of the fi re appliances. By the mid 1960s the fi re brigade had their own VHF frequency and future upgrades continued to improve the communications systems. The fi re at Datsun UK in Lancing in 1973 was so huge it needed 100 fi re fi ghters from local stations to deal with it. In 1981 Shoreham’s fi re crews were in the news again when a ship in the harbour, the MV Frisian Star, began leaking toxic chemicals with fl ammable fumes.

In the early 1990s the fi re service’s communications system became computerised and fi re crews were issued with pagers for the fi rst time to alert them to a ‘shout’. The West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service is today still part of West Sussex County Council and has 28 fi re stations across the county. Today Shoreham fi re station is variably crewed, and is home to two water tenders with ladders, a breathing apparatus support unit and a super G 4 x 4 off road vehicle. The Shoreham fi re brigade are on average called out to in excess of 500 incidents per year, including attending road accidents and cases of fl ooding. In addition, Shoreham airport is home to SARFS, the Shoreham Airport Rescue And Firefi ghting Service, which has its own crew and four vehicles with specialist equipment to deal with incidents involving aircraft.

a neW drop-in centre in the heart of Southwick opened its doors recently to scores of older people keen to seek

information about services and clubs in the Southwick and Shoreham area.

Pioneered by the Adur Older Persons’ Network, the drop-in centre is the direct result of views expressed in a recent survey for the over 50s.

“We’re offering exactly what older people said they’d like to have in their neighbourhood” says AOPN’s business development officer, David Griffiths who was instrumental in securing District Council funds for the project. “They can come here for information on local support groups, a health and well-being ‘check-up’ with from the Community Partnership Team, or simply to have a chat and a cup of tea.”

Trained nurse and health advisor, Alison Travers, welcomes the opportunity to keep in touch with local older people. “It gives people the chance to make initial contact with the CPT

and chat through any health or lifestyle concerns. We can then follow this up with a home visit.”

Southwick resident, Ena Barr, who is actively involved within the community, values the new drop-in centre as a place where people living on their own can come and make friends. “It’s been lovely to come and talk to someone – group activities are always better for people on their own. I’ve had my blood pressure taken and been able to chat to Alison about my health, situation and how best to cope.”

The Southwick Drop-in will run every Monday morning and include a range of regular activities for both men and women – gentle exercise, arts and craft classes, jewellery making, and manicures/pedicures – and a programme of special events and speakers. For more information call AOPN team community engagement workers Peter and Louisa: 01903 854996. feeLinG reaLLY Good inside? These days it

seems almost a distant memory! Shoreham`s newest Health & Beauty Centre Feel Good Factor was opened last month.

Owner Yvette Jordan has been working around the local area for the last four years and her loyal following of clients welcome her new venture. Yvette`s proven approach has an extremely effective, new way forward for our Health, Weight, Diet, Inch-Loss, Exercise and Beauty. It stems from her 27 years experience and the fact she is a Lymphoedema Therapist.

She said “When I started Outside In Detox four years ago the health benefi ts that women were experiencing were truly amazing. I needed to know

more medically what was happening to give all these amazing results. On my course as a Lymphoedema Therapist I learnt obesity is one of the causes of Lymphoedema, but this devastating condition actually happens very, very, very slowly.

“You can diagnose early warning signs and visibly see the symptoms happening up to 5-10 years beforehand, and you can actually see these early stages in many overweight women, walking around. What is very sad, is they do not have any idea what is happening to them. And it`s all down to the lymphatic system becoming extremely sluggish and stagnant and basically being ignored, purely because we don`t understand how it works.”

Feel Good Factor is completely unique because it concentrates on lymphatic health and fl uid retentive problems associated with weight gain. You can do private or small exercise classes and get on the road to fi tness, reduce, tone and tighten up targeting specifi c areas you need i.e. waist and thighs.

Just breathing pumps lymphatics without running. FGF has a full range of therapies addressing the issue of being overweight and health related problems. All Yvette`s therapists including Karolina, personal exercise instructor are aware of the importance of lymphatic health in the fi ght against weight, fl uid retention, disease and health they are there to help assist

you reach your target goal and size. Also a centre for beauty, Yvette specializes in anti-ageing treatments because prevention is always a better option than a cure. Beauty treatments are always part of feeling good whether it be an eyebrow shape, eyelash tint or facial. If you are feeling good on the inside you start to take care of the outside appearance. Visit fgf.uk.com for more information about all our treatments and therapies.

Feel Good Factor — Your HealthHow fed up are we to keep hearing diet and exercise to feel healthier! Yes! Absolutely you must eat a balanced diet — all in moderation, take exercise to keep the blood pumping around your body — vitally important! But sometimes you can feel tired, lethargic, unwell, swollen and you just don`t know why? You usually put it down to weight if you are overweight. If you`re not, it`s time of the month or stress, pet problems, family crisis, something
