Who dunnit? Who shot Mildred in her own country house at the start of a weekend party? The bungling Inspector Pratt will be on the case in “Murdered to Death” by Peter Gordon, an hilarious spoof in the best Agatha Christie tradition. The play, set in the 1930s, is Wick Theatre Company’s contribution to the Adur Festival.

JoanMaple(AnnaQuick),anearneighbour,callsandwanglesaninvitationtodinner.Shehastheunenviablereputationofattractingmurderswherevershegoes,andsureenough,whenMildredgoesintothediningroom,thefatalshotisfired.

EnterInspectorPratt,England’sanswertoInspectorClouseau,aidedbyConstableTompkins.PrattwillbeplayedbyGuySteddon,andtheconstablebyTomHarris.Itsoonbecomesclearthatthemurdererisn’tfinishedyet,butwillthevillainbecaughtbeforeeveryoneelsemeetstheirdoom,orwilltheaudiencedielaughingfirst?Withover500successfulproductionstoitscredit,theplayisahitwhereveritgoes.AndunderthedirectionofBobRyder,thisaward-winningcompanywillbebringingitsowntouchofclasstoawonderfullyentertainingnightatthetheatre.

ofYorkonthe18thOctober2009,isnowfullyrestoredtoitsformergloryandbacktobeinganimportantroleinprovidingagreenalternativetotheA27;fromhorseriders,dogwalkers,cyclists,ramblers,birdwatcherstofishermenaswellasanaccesspointfortheAirportandRicardos.MuchoftheoriginaltimberwasreusedandwherethiscouldnotbedonereplacementtimbercalledGreenheartwasobtainedfromsustainabllitymanagedforestsinGuyana.

Althoughthemajorityofthecostoftherestorationhasbeenraised,

inordertogetworkstartedinMarch2008theOldShorehamTolbridgeCommunityTrustpersuadedWestSussexCountyCounciltoundertakethedeficit.ThebadnewsisthatinreturntheTrusthasagreedtorepaythedeficit.

OneofthefundraisingeventistheannualsponsoredcycleridewhichthisyearwillstartatRicardos(offtheA27besidetheTollbridge)onSunday 5th July 2009andwillenableallcycliststorideovertherestoredbridge.Therewillbefourcyclerides,fromashortfivemilesalongtheRiverAdurforyoungstersandthelessconfident,toachallenging38milesintotheWealdto

DragonsGreenviaShipley.Bytakingpartandaskingfriendsandfamilytodonatemoneyinrecognitionofthechallenge,fundscanberaisedtopayoffouroutstandingdebt.

BornLidiaBorisovnavonHubbenet,inKiev,Russiain1869,LydiaYavorskawasoneoffoursisters,allofwhombecameactresses.LikemanyRussiansofthedayshestudiedinParis,andwasfluentinbothFrenchandEnglish.In1896LydiamarriedPrinceVladimirBariatinsky,fromaRoyalRussianhouse,takingthetitleofPrincessBariatinsky.HisparentshoweverdisapprovedofhimmarryinganactressandperhapsbecauseofthisthecouplemovedtoLondonin1909.HereshewasalmostimmediatelyasuccessonthestagesoftheWestEnd,andalsoontheliteraryscene.AtaLondongardenpartyshemettheAmericanwritersHenryJamesandEzraPound,anincidentlaterrecalledinPound’s‘Cantos’.

Lydiaappearedherowntouringproductionsofplayswrittenbothbyherfirsthusband,andbywritersincludingZola,StrindbergandGorky.Shewasfrommanyreportsastrong-willedactress.AreviewerofthetimedescribeshowtheyoungmaledirectorofaproductionofChekov’s‘TheSeagull’bytheAldephiPlayerswas“unabletocompelPrincessBariatinskytobehaveassheshould”.Between1909to1911,LydiaappearedinbothNorwegianplaywrightHenrikIbsen’s‘HeddaGabler’and‘ADollsHouse’inLondon.ThecriticMiriamAliceFrancdescribesheras“themostsuccessfuloftheforeigninterpretersofIbsen,herstrangefiercetypeofactingmakingheratheatricalsensation.”

Lydiawasequallyformidablewhenitcametoothermattersinherlife.DuringParisianfashiondesignerPaulPoiret’sapprenticeshipattheWorthcouturehouse,hedesignedaplainblackwoolcloakcutlikeakimonofortheyoungLydia.Onseeingitsheissaidtohavecriedout,“Whathorror;withus,whentherearelowfellowswhorunafteroursledgesandannoyus,wehavetheir

headscutoff,andweputtheminsacksjustlikethat”.

LydiaYavorskahadgreatsympathywiththegrowingwomen’ssuffragemovement,campaigningbothforwomentohavethevoteandgreaterrightsinsociety.In1911,intheweekofKingGeorgeV’scoronation,thelargestdemonstrationofthesuffragette’scampaign,‘TheCoronationSuffragePageant’,tookplaceinthecentreofLondon.These‘fourmilesofwomenmarchingtowardsonegoal’includedthespectacularpageantoftheActresses’FranchiseLeague.ThiswasledbyLydiaYavorskaridingahouseanddressedasIbsen’sfemalecharacter‘HeddaGabler’.

FormuchoftheperiodofWorldWarOneandtheRussianRevolution,LydialivedinRussia.Likemanyotherformerlywealthypeopleshesufferedgreathardshipatthistimeduetofoodandfuelshortages.Thesedeprivationswerelatersaidtobeacontributingfactorinherearlydeath.In1915,LydiawasthechairmanoftheLondonCommitteeoftheGreatBritainToPolandFund,whichraisedmoneyfromtheBritishpublictohelpthoseinPolandseverelyaffectedbytheconflict.

OverthenextfewyearsLydiaheld

charitymatineesofplaystoraisefundsfortheRussianpeople.TheseincludedaproductionofRussianwriterLeoTolstoy’s‘AnnaKarenina’inNovember1918,whereitwasnotedontheplaybill“MadameYavorskadecidedtogivehalftheproceedsofthevisittotheBritishandRussianRedCrossfunds”.

LydiahaddivorcedPrinceBariatinskyin1916,andtheadaptorofthisproductionof‘AnnaKarenina’wastheplaywrightJohnPollock,whobecamehersecondhusbandin1920.Sadly,shediedonlyayearafterhermarriage,onSeptember3rd1921atherhomeinCarlisleRoad,Hove.Shewasaged52.JohnPollocksurvivedhiswifelivingonuntil1963.AmemorialserviceforLydiaYavorskawasheldintheRussianChurchinLondon.Anauctionsoonaftersoldsevenhundreditemsincludingherfurs,costumesandjewellery.ThereisaportraitofLydiaintheV&A,andhergraveinSt.NicholasChurchyardremembershow“Shedevotedherlifeandgiftstotheworshipofbeautyandtothecauseoffreedom.”
