we are all becoming more aware of the impact we are having on the world. We are happily recycling, we

donate money to charities to help nature and the environment and we are all concerned with global warming. Many people take this concern one step further by literally investing for the future of our planet; often known as ethical or green investment.

Many of us have money in a personal pension, a bond, ISA or unit trust. The money will be invested in funds, managed by fund managers. The money will be pooled with that of other investors and used to by assets which should hopefully make your money grow. Normally, this will include shares in companies, in the UK and sometimes abroad. But do you know where your money is invested?

The companies in your investment funds could be dealing in gas, oil, arms, tobacco or pharmaceuticals; in essence you could be supporting companies which are going against your moral beliefs. It is always difficult to dig below the surface and find out, and it is even more difficult if you want to avoid investment into certain companies or areas of investments, especially as the investment will be changing as time goes on.

How to invest ethicallyLarge life companies and fund managers know that people are concerned, and many have now launched “ethical funds”. These funds can put your mind at rest that you are investing in the right place. The funds can be accessed via an ISA, pension or other investments.

How do the funds invest? There are two main ways: Negative screening: The fund manager would avoid investments in companies whose activities are deemed to be negative. This process is used by most UK ethical fund managers.Positive screening: The fund manager would invest in companies who are involved in projects with a positive social or environmental impact, things such as waste management or renewable energy. The manager would literally screen in companies who are doing good in the world. These funds are often known as green funds.

How to access the fundsDepending which provider you have your investment with, they may have ethical funds available. If you have taken no advice for some time, a full review would be advisable, you should contact an Independent Financial Adviser who can contact your current providers and get all of the relevant information, then advising you on the best course of action.if you would like to discuss any of the above, for ethical investments or a full financial review, please call me Claire Cook on 01273 224667. i would be happy to assist.

born in london in April 1884, writer Gilbert Frankau’s father was a prosperous cigar merchant, his mother a

novelist who wrote under the male name Frank Danby. George Moore who wrote Shoreham-set novel ‘Esther Waters’ was a family friend. Although his family was Jewish, Frankau became an Anglican at 13 and later converted to Roman Catholicism. After Eton, he went straight into the family cigar business.

At the outbreak of the 1st World War, Gilbert Frankau enlisted, and became a commissioned officer in the 9th East Surrey Rifles. He was sent to Shoreham camp, an experience he vividly and accurately recreates in the life of his fictional character Peter Jackson in his novel ‘Peter Jackson, Cigar Merchant’ published in 1920. Peter Jackson arrives at Shoreham station in an amusingly described scene, in which the town’s is described as ‘on’ rather than ‘by’ sea: “They made Brighton by twelve o’clock; Shoreham-on-Sea twenty minutes later; inquired at the station for General Dunning's headquarters. The vacuous-eyed porter had never heard of General Dunning; but there was a camp at the Golf Club; they might know there.”

Life at the Shoreham camp, on the lower slopes of Slonk Hill, just above the Upper Shoreham Road, did not go smoothly for Frankau. He disagreed with a caddish officer and was transferred out, a quarrel he depicts in his novel, alongside observations about the chaos, confusion and lack of equipment the men faced in their bell-tented hillside encampment that winter. Several rifles had to be borrowed from Lancing College and heavy rain in November of 1914 turned the site into a quagmire. Residents of Shoreham opened up their homes as billets for the soldiers while proper huts were built on the site. In ‘Peter Jackson’ Frankau says of that wet winter: ‘the late November rains (and various hints in the Press about ‘the scandalous state of some of our Camps’) drove the Chalkshires out of the Shoreham slime…’

Later after the huts were built, there is a historically fascinating passage describing the arrival of the army horses at Shoreham by train. ‘By now, nearly half the horses had been decanted, protesting vigorously, at Shoreham siding; were picketed out in long lines on the flat ground below the hutments: and Patricia grew to love those sounds no horse-soldier ever forgets: the whickering and the whinnying which follows the command ‘feed’, the tossing of head-collars and a stamp of hooves on turf as nose-bag slings are slid over laid-back ears, the deep snuffle of nostrils as muzzles plunge to corn.’

When the Division finally left Shoreham in June 1915, on their way to the front, again Gilbert Frankau preserves this scene for us in his novel: ‘It was early June when the Fourth Southdown Brigade left Shoreham for its final concentration at Aldershot; and for three sun-drenched days the mile-long column rolled on its way, inland from the sea, across the swelling weald, by white cottages where children waved and cheered, through sleepy villages and woods damp with early dews, halting to water at shallow pools on green commons, rolling on again in the warm glow of afternoon, horse-heads nodding in unison, traces taut, ‘number one’ riding proudly behind their wagons.’

After the scenes of travelling through idyllic countryside, the novel turns to the horror and carnage of the war in France. A poignant moment in this section of the book sees his hungry, tired, war-weary former comrades from the Shoreham camp march past him on their way to the front at Loos. The men are now scarcely recognisable as the proud and undaunted soldiers he earlier described leaving the camp. ‘Were these the lusty singing-men he had known at Worthing, the cheery officers he had dined with at Shoreham – these dust-stained, weary fellows, plodding two by two either side of the road? Hardly a sound came from their parched throats. Packs dragged at their shoulders; rifles dragged at their hands. Their faces were lined as the faces of old men. Sweat dripped from them…’

Gilbert Frankau himself was invalided out of the army in 1918 with shellshock and neurasthenia. With the publication of his first novel, he realised this was where his true career lay, rather than his by now faltering cigar business. Frankau dictated the first draft of ‘Peter Jackson, Cigar Merchant’, but the notebooks were accidentally destroyed, and he started again, writing it down himself this time.

Frankau again volunteered for active service in the Second World War, becoming a Royal Air Force Squadron Leader in 1940, though he was invalided out of the army again in February 1941. He married three times, and had a daughter, Pamela who became a novelist. He also worked for a time as a journalist and would have become an MP, were in not for his divorced status. Frankau produced numerous novels, short stories and books of poetry during his lifetime, and was perhaps best known as a war poet. He died in November 1952 aged 68, a year before the publication of his final book.

as tHe year is speeding by, at least we have had some sunshine and it’s been amazing to see how quickly

the gardens have responded with growth spurts. Mid May also showed why you still have to be careful with tender young plants, with the high cold winds we suffered. We are approaching the longest day of the year already, which means that the gardens will soon be at their thriving best, with plants responding to the high light levels

With the long gloomy winter and spring we suffered, it seems everyone has been craving a splash of colour to brighten

things up and make it really feel like summer. Without doubt one of the best and easiest ways for many people to achieve this is by the use of hanging baskets and displays in pots and window boxes. If they are done well and looked after they can give a wonderful stunning display all summer long. Unfortunately if they are not then they can look very, very sad indeed.

When it comes to the display, it really is a case of anything goes, from the firm favourites of pansies, lobelia, petunias and begonias, to more unusual plants being used such as small lavenders, or even vegetables such as tomato plants or strawberries. It really is a case of choose whatever you like the look of.

The container you use is important as it needs to allow for drainage. Baskets will allow this, but you can really use your imagination, with things like old watering cans, wooden boxes or even old welly boots. Whatever you choose make sure you line it with a liner that will allow the water to drain out, but will also help to retain the soil and the moisture. A cheap way is to use a black plastic bag with holes poked in it, or you can use the more traditional method of moss, or buy purpose made liners from the garden centre.

The biggest battle you will have with keeping them looking good is to ensure a good supply of water; however it also washes out the nutrients. For that reason it is a good idea to use potting mix rather than plain soil or compost as it has a good range of nutrients and will hold onto them better. As you fill the basket poke through the trailing plants and then fill the top with the main pants at the top. Leave the soil about 1½ inches below the rim to help hold the water and mix in some water retaining granules as well.

To keep the display looking good you also need to feed it regularly. Either use a liquid feed once a week, mixed in with the water, or you can place slow release pellets in the baskets. Finally to keep them looking good you need to remove dead flowers as soon as possible to keep encouraging more to be produced.

Whether you make your own or buy them ready made, they really do help to lift the garden and give you a feeling of summertime, even if the weather is playing its usual summer tricks.

tHe general PubliC are invited to take part in an amazing project where they can place a 3D model of their

house, business or school onto a large fantasy map of Adur. A pop up shop will be set up in East Street, Shoreham-by-Sea Friday 31st May – Sunday 16th June where participants can drop in Wednesdays to Sundays, 10.30am-5.30pm.

This original community art project was inspired by Inclusive Arts Practitioner, Natalia Natuka, who is dedicated to generating a greater sense of community within Adur by encouraging innovation and creativity amongst the local population. The project is in collaboration with Emmaus Communities who offer homeless people a home, work and a chance to rebuild their lives.

There will be the opportunity of working alongside local

artists who will share their skills and assist in creating a cardboard landscape that not only reflects the individual but also the bringing together of the community at large.‘This project offers an accessible platform for anyone regardless of their previous creative experience to be involved’, comments Natalia who has been planning it since January. There will be lots of creative art materials at the venue and various artists from across Sussex will be on hand each day to advise and support. Natalia adds, ‘Warwick Baker is the estate agent who has supported the project by offering us one of their empty shops in which we will house Adur Wonderland, The Flower House on East Street in Shoreham.

We are also going to run some creative sessions at St Peters's catholic primary school working with the children to make their fantastical house additions to the installation’.

The map will be further added to with participants choosing road names, designing public buildings, creating communal spaces and collaboratively representing and exploring what makes a place and a group of people a ‘community’.

Adur Wonderland is open to all and offers the chance of becoming part of Adur Festival’s unique community arts project.

Adur Festival has seen many years of success and countless events over the years. 2007 saw the opening of Ropetackle Arts Centre which has become the base for the festival. The Ropetackle Trust, headed by Martin Allen, is now in the position to take over the running of the festival having obtained funding from the Arts Council, with match funding from Adur Council. ‘Our main aim’, says Martin, ‘is to regenerate the Festival by creating a buzz about it, to draw people in, whatever their contribution. We also decided to put on a centre-piece event, The Living Map, as a statement about the Adur Community and to involve as many people as possible’.

The Living Map will be created entirely out of human bodies to form a map of Adur, photographed from the sky. Be a part of this memorable event, Sunday 16th June. Other events include Theatre, Poetry, Music, Art, Workshops, Talks and much more.Full details of all events can be found on the festival website: www.adurfestival.co.uk

a gym owner is set to muscle in on an

appeal and complete a grim challenge to help a disabled boy in West Sussex get crucial help.

Paul Crane, who owns Beach Fit gym in Shoreham Beach, and 20 of its members are set to take on the Tough Mudder Challenge in Winchester on Saturday, June 8th; an event described as “probably the toughest challenge on the planet.”

Father-of-two Paul was compelled to answer the

recent plea made by national charity Caudwell Children to help Samuel Elliot receive a specialist Etac Balder powered wheelchair worth over £18,000.

Samuel, from Shoreham-by-Sea, has Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, a rare muscle weakening condition which only affects boys and decreases independent mobility and means Samuel now requires a wheelchair for his day-to-day life.

Paul and the team of members will take on the 12 mile

obstacle course designed by the army’s special forces to test strength, stamina, mental grit and camaraderie.

A 24 hour bike-a-thon is also set to take place in aid of the charity to help Samuel and other disabled children in the area get crucial help.

Paul, said “I heard about Sam's plea and just felt compelled to help out as much as I could.

Our intention at Beach Fit is to help Sam achieve his target via this event and other fund raising events scheduled at the gym in the coming months.”

Caudwell Children provide family support services, specialist equipment, treatment and support to help change the lives of disabled children.

Mum, Laura Elliot, said “Having the powerchair will be life-changing for Samuel on so many levels.

The chair’s functions will help Samuel socially at school because he will be able to join in more and when he is out and about the chair will enable him to be at the same height as others so he doesn’t feel inferior or excluded.

Going to watch the football is a big thing for him and the equipment will make this so much more enjoyable for him.

We simply could not get this equipment without the help of Caudwell Children.”

Anyone wishing to find out more about the event or Samuel’s appeal should contact Tiffany Saddler at Caudwell Children on 07812 988323 or email [email protected].

i am Caroline and I live with my cat Schmoo and my partner Phil in

Shoreham-by sea. I have owned cats since I was two and have cared for many cats over the years.

Following a high pressure career in financial services, I now do what I love, working with my favorite creatures!

I adore Schmoo and I know that the thought of going to a cattery would horrify him! Like all cats, he does like his creature comforts and his own home.

I started Cats like Royalty to offer those home loving cats the service and care we know they expect and deserve when their owners can’t do it for them.

It's not always an option to ask friends or family to come in every day and give your cat the attention they need and want, especially if you need to be away for longer periods, or at short notice.

So instead, why not arrange for me to visit your cat twice a day, in their own home? I will attend to all their needs, including the less pleasant ones! There is also time for a cuddle or a play during my visits. With the addition of home security while you're away, Cats like royalty offers a beneficial alternative to a cattery.

So if you're going away, and need your cat(s) treating like royalty, give me a call on 07912 037131.

Cats like royaltyCaroline Murden loves cats and now offers local cat owners a cost-effective cat sitting service.
