FEELING REALLY GOOD inside? These days it

seems almost a distant memory! Shoreham`s newest Health & Beauty Centre Feel Good Factor was opened last month.

Owner Yvette Jordan has been working around the local area for the last four years and her loyal following of clients welcome her new venture. Yvette`s proven approach has an extremely effective, new way forward for our Health, Weight, Diet, Inch-Loss, Exercise and Beauty. It stems from her 27 years experience and the fact she is a Lymphoedema Therapist.

She said “When I started Outside In Detox four years ago the health benefi ts that women were experiencing were truly amazing. I needed to know

more medically what was happening to give all these amazing results. On my course as a Lymphoedema Therapist I learnt obesity is one of the causes of Lymphoedema, but this devastating condition actually happens very, very, very slowly.

“You can diagnose early warning signs and visibly see the symptoms happening up to 5-10 years beforehand, and you can actually see these early stages in many overweight women, walking around. What is very sad, is they do not have any idea what is happening to them. And it`s all down to the lymphatic system becoming extremely sluggish and stagnant and basically being ignored, purely because we don`t understand how it works.”

Feel Good Factor is completely unique because it concentrates on lymphatic health and fl uid retentive problems associated with weight gain. You can do private or small exercise classes and get on the road to fi tness, reduce, tone and tighten up targeting specifi c areas you need i.e. waist and thighs.

Just breathing pumps lymphatics without running. FGF has a full range of therapies addressing the issue of being overweight and health related problems. All Yvette`s therapists including Karolina, personal exercise instructor are aware of the importance of lymphatic health in the fi ght against weight, fl uid retention, disease and health they are there to help assist

Feel Good Factor — Your HealthHow fed up are we to keep hearing diet and exercise to feel healthier! Yes! Absolutely you must eat a balanced diet — all in moderation, take exercise to keep the blood pumping around your body — vitally important! But sometimes you can feel tired, lethargic, unwell, swollen and you just don`t know why? You usually put it down to weight if you are overweight. If you`re not, it`s time of the month or stress, pet problems,

Shoreham RNLI Lifeboat Cox-swain hangs up his lifejacket after 43 years servicePETER HUXTABLE

JOINED as a volunteer crew member at Shoreham Lifeboat Station 43 years ago.

During his years of service he has shown selfl ess dedication to the RNLI and helped to save hundreds of lives.

In fact he has saved 449 lives during his service serving on both the all weather and inshore lifeboats.

Born in London, he moved to Shoreham-by-Sea when he was aged eight. Having grown up by the sea he became a fi sherman and was soon asked to join the lifeboat crew.

In 1991 he became coxswain of the Shoreham lifeboat becoming the second longest serving coxswain in the history of the station.

In 2005 he was awarded an MBE for services to the RNLI. He has also been awarded two RNLI vellums for helping to rescue the crew of the stricken Greek vessel, the Athina B, off Brighton in 1980 and as coxswain for saving the lives of two crew on board the yacht Trimley Maid, which was in trouble in gale force nine winds off the coast in June1999.

Peter also worked tirelessly for three years to raise money and promote the £1 million community appeal to help build a new lifeboat station at Shoreham.

He even took to the skies to publicise the appeal and wing walked his way into the record books by becoming the fi rst ever RNLI coxswain to attempt the daring act in 2008.

The biplane he was standing on fl ew directly over the lifeboat station at Shoreham, giving him a bird’s eye view of it and the seas he has navigated while rescuing those in trouble.

In January 2009 he saw the old Shoreham lifeboat station on Kingston Beach, built in 1933, demolished and in September 2010 fi nally stepped into the new completed state-of-the-art lifeboat station.

Three months later and having already seen action on three previous station lifeboats, he proudly brought the new £2.7million RNLI lifeboat Enid Collett, the only Tamar-class lifeboat on the south coast, back to Shoreham and into her new boathouse.

On his last offi cial day of service, the crew organised a fi nal launch of the lifeboat and a surprise where he was winched off by the Solent Coastguard helicopter and put on the Newhaven lifeboat.

A modest Peter, said: “I couldn’t do my job as coxswain without the support of the lifeboat crew and my family. It is a team effort.

“It has been a massive part of my life and I will miss it when the adrenaline kicks in and takes over on a shout, and you know you have been able to help someone in trouble and being part of a team.”

Steve Smith , who joined as a crew member in 1999, is the new Shoreham lifeboat coxswain.

THE SWITCH TO digital television is coming to our area very soon. Most of the television transmitters will begin to switch

to a digital only transmission in early March, but some as early as February or as late as April. Of course, most of us have been watching digital television for several years, either via Freeview, Sky or cable services or, more recently, using Freesat. So, why do I need to worry about the switchover you may ask? The short answer is, in the vast majority of cases you don’t!

Satellite and cable services (with the exception of some alternate language services) are completely unaffected by the switchover as they have been using the digital format for some time. Those of us using terrestrial transmissions via an aerial on our roof are also likely to be watching digital channels already.

That lovely big telly hanging on the wall is certainly going to be capable of receiving digital signals and probably is already. But, what about that old portable in the kids room? You may need to do something about that.

The switch to digital need not be a problem, but here are some things you need to be sure of before the big day. Here are some frequently asked questions.

I receive my TV via, Sky, Virgin or Freesat, do I need to do anything? No, these services are unaffected by the switchover.

I am already receiving digital channels via my aerial, but some channels are missing, do I need a digital aerial? There is no such thing as a digital aerial! It may be that you will need a better quality aerial but it is just as likely that after switchover, when signal levels are increased, you will receive the missing channels.

Why can I get all the digital channels on my main set but only 1-5 on my other sets?Your secondary sets are receiving analogue channels only. You need to either upgrade your sets for new ones or alternatively install a set top converter. This will allow you to watch digital channels without the cost of replacing the televisions. In some cases, the set top box can be supplied at a subsidised cost (conditions apply) via the digital help scheme. (digitaluk.co.uk or 08456 50 50 50).

Will my video recorder work after switchover?Yes, but you will need to connect a set top box to it to be able to record digital channels, even if you have a digital television. In practice, this is an overly complicated procedure and this format is almost completely obsolete.

I have digital television already; do I need to do anything?Yes! The switchover will occur in two stages. The fi rst stage will be the switchoff of BBC2 Analogue. The second part will take place two weeks later when all the other Analogue channels will be switched off. Everybody receiving their television signal via an aerial will need to re-tune their

THROUGHOUT LIFE WE can’t help but gather fi nancial products. Whether it be pensions with various companies,

life cover or investments. Many people have a vague idea of what they have, but things can become messy. So much so that it seems really daunting to go through it all. The new year seems like a good time to get things in order, so if the following is you, perhaps you would like some independent advice to get things sorted.

Firstly pensions. They are complicated things and the paperwork is full of jargon. No wonder people get the statements through and just tuck them away. But remember this is your invested money. A pension review can have a real impact on your retirement income. Often people have several plans which have accumulated over the years. The good thing is that I am able to deal with your pension companies on your behalf, obtaining all the relevant information. I can then compare your plans to the ones now available. You could be paying high charges or languishing in funds which are simply not performing.

Once your pensions are arranged by Talk Money we review your funds on an ongoing basis, it’s all part of the service. We also make sure that you are comfortable with the level of investment risk you are taking, this is also monitored. Our systems ensure that your money is looked after and managed from the point we arrange a pension for you.

If you have investments, the story could be the same. With good intentions you could have invested in a stocks & shares ISA. How is this performing? Has it been reviewed and are you making the most of your tax free investments? Currently you can invest up to £10,680 in a stocks & shares ISA per fi nancial year, many people don’t use this allowance. ISAs are a great way to save for your future as all growth is tax free. Again we can make sure you are invested in the right funds and make reviews as an ongoing service.

Once your fi nances are in place you can keep in touch with your investment performance using our online client system, Enable. This is really popular with clients. You can see all of your fi nancial products, life cover, pensions and investments in one place. No need to wait for your annual statement or make phone calls to several providers. The system gives you up to date information at the touch of a button.

What’s the fi rst step?To make a review, the fi rst step is to provide Talk Money with the details of all your plans including pensions, investments, mortgages and protection products. I would have a meeting with you, take the policy numbers and gather all of the relevant information. Once things are clear, I would make recommendations of how your fi nancial plans can be improved. If you would like a simple, independent review of things please give me a call. For a free initial consultation please call me Claire Cook on 01273 224667. I would be happy to help

SO FAR THE weather seems to have been kinder to us this year, and

we’ve managed to avoid a repeat of the snows of last year. In the main it has been dry and mild; although we have had some frosts, so don’t let your guard down.

The early part of January had some very high winds causing all sorts of problems with fences, but also with damage to trees and shrubs. If any of yours have suffered damage make sure you remove any broken branches if it’s safe to do so. When you remove them, make sure that you make a clean cut past the damaged torn area. This will help to prevent any diseases getting into the shrub. Don’t be tempted to paint any sort of treatment onto the damaged area to seal it. Let nature take its course and it will heal on its own.

Looking ahead the winter has been quite dry so far, as was Autumn and Summer. It’s a good idea to make some preparations now and check your water butts. Deal with any leaks or dripping taps. Also check that the water is actually getting into them, as quite often the downpipes become detached. If you need extra ones get them installed now, whilst the chances of rainfall are higher to help you through the drier months.

Whilst we are on the subject or preparing, if your efforts at composting have been fairly poor to date, then why not empty the compost bin and start again ready for the new season. The

contents can be emptied onto any beds you have. Make sure the bin is sited where it is easily accessible, and where it will get some sun, as it needs heat to help in the composting process. A good mix of fresh uncooked kitchen vegetable peelings, teabags, shredded paper and general garden waste well mixed in, should produce a good batch of compost within a few months. Not only is it good or the garden, but it helps reduce on the removal of garden waste to the tip. It’s a very satisfying feeling producing a good compost out of waste, so give it a try

This really is the time of the year when were on the starting blocks in the garden, itching to go, so there’s plenty that you can do in the greenhouse or on the window cill if you don’t have a green house to start the growing spring season off. Plenty of vegetable seeds can be grown into pots or trays, such as tomatoes, peppers, courgettes, cabbage to give you that head start. If you’ve never tried it before then get a few cheap packets of seeds of something you enjoy eating and give it a go, it really is a very satisfying feeling to see plants staring to grow within a few weeks. Make sure you give your seeds the best start you can, with fresh compost and clean pots.

I love this time of year as it begins to feel like spring is around the corner as more and more plants start to show growth in the garden, so take the chance to get out and have a look around in the

garden and make plans for the coming months, but don’t plan for too long as spring will be here sooner than you realise!

MARIE LOFTUS

IN 1900, MARIE Loftus fi rst came to Shoreham. One of the great

female stars of the music hall, she was the fi rst of numerous stars of stage and screen to build a holiday home on Shoreham Beach, beginning what was to be known as Bungalow Town.

Marie Loftus was born in Glasgow in 1857. She was the daughter of an Irish family who lived in Stockwell Street near to the Scotia Music Hall,

where as a young girl she took to the stage and danced. Her fi rst big break, still in her home city, was in 1874 when she appeared at Brown’s Royal Music Hall in Dunlop Street. A striking-looking young woman, Marie Loftus quickly gained many male admirers. A writer called J. J Bell reported, "Glasgow never had a greater favourite. In the spotlight, singing 'That is Love', she looked — to me, at eighteen — beautiful."

It was at the age of eighteen that Marie Loftus gave birth to her daughter Cissie Loftus. Her husband Ben Brown was part of the successful variety group, Brown, Newland & Le Clerc and later became known as a solo comedian. Mrs Le Clerc was another stage star later to move to Shoreham Beach where she had a bungalow named ‘Morningside’ at 108 Old Fort Road.

Aged twenty, Marie made the move to London to sing and dance in a show at the Oxford Theatre. Her rise to stardom had begun. It was back home in Glasgow though that Marie always received the warmest audience appreciation and this was in part due to her generosity as well as her stage act. During an 1894 run at the Britannia Theatre in Trongate, she placed an order with a local boot maker for 150 pairs of strong boots to be distributed by the local priest to the poorest children of the parish. Marie could now afford to be generous. Receiving top billing as "The Sarah Bernhardt of the Music Halls", she was a leading star, earning by the late 1890s, £100 a week, which was at that time a princely sum. She was much in demand at Christmas time as a pantomime principal boy and appeared as both Robinson Crusoe and Sinbad The Sailor in the late 1890s.

As a music hall star, Marie was a versatile singer, singing traditional Irish songs, as well as some risqué numbers with suggestive lyrics. She was perhaps most well known and loved

however for performing sentimental ballads such as "One Touch of Nature Makes the Whole World Kin". News of her performances had by now spread far and wide and soon Marie was regularly touring to South Africa and the USA.

The initial visit Marie Loftus made to Shoreham was whilst she was staying in Brighton to perform a show there. A trip to Shoreham’s mostly deserted but picturesque beach had been recommended to her, and so she crossed the Adur by the East Street ferry to see it for herself. It was on this fi rst visit to what was then a sparsely populated area that Marie decided to have a holiday home built there. Her new bungalow at 150 Old Fort Road was named ‘Cecilia’ after her daughter Cissie, who would stay there with her during the holidays from her Blackpool convent school.

Quick to follow in her mother’s footsteps Cissie Loftus made her début at the Oxford Music Hall in London at seventeen. Also, while still seventeen, she eloped to marry Justin Huntly McCarthy, the fi rst of two ill-fated marriages. Cissie’s career as a straight actress, singer, mimic, vaudevillian and music hall performer fl ourished however and in 1894, she appeared at the Lyceum Theatre in New York City. Cissie Loftus became an international vaudeville star alongside Vesta Tilley and Harry Lauder. She also appeared in Hollywood movies, both in the silent era and the ‘talkies’ from the 1910s to 1940.

Meanwhile many other stage stars had followed Marie Loftus to Shoreham Beach and in the years before the Second World War it became a thriving artistes’ colony. In 1914, Marie moved to a new home that was larger and grander, though still wooden in its construction, on the southern side of Old Fort Road. This house was named ‘Pavlova’ after the famous ballet dancer Anna Pavlova, as at that time, Cissie Loftus had a stage act impersonating her. During the First World War, the Royal Flying Corps used Pavlova as the offi cers’ mess.

Marie continued to be in demand as a music hall performer for many years, though her career was at least matched and possibly eclipsed by that of Cissie, thanks to her move to America and success there in both stage and fi lm roles. Marie Loftus died in 1940, around the same time as the army demolished much of Bungalow Town, as part of their plans to defend the beach from any wartime invasion. Cissie outlived her mother by only three years, dying in New York in 1943, aged 66.

THIS MONTH WITH Valentines day approaching, I want to focus on oils with the theme of love. Whether you are

spending it with a beloved or on your own here are some ways to feel good.

With many feel good properties essential oils are powerful mood elevators, helping to ease tension, anxiety, stress and they also help with boosting confi dence and self esteem.

There are many oils that work as a heart tonic such as Ylang Ylang, helping to calm heart palpitations and anxiety whilst promoting feelings of sensuality and euphoria.

Why not make a massage oil blend and give a soothing massage to a loved one, or an exotic body oil for yourself. Blend 3 drops into a tablespoon of oil such as sunfl ower, almond or coconut oil. great to use before a date to help you feel good and encourage romance.

Rose essential oil helps to calm and nourish the heart uplifting any sadness and loneliness encouraging you to love and care for yourself whilst making a great addition to a romantic and soothing bath oil for one or two.

Just blend 3 drops of Rose oil with 3 of Orange oil and Sandalwood oil into a tablespoon of ‘carrier’ oil such as sunfl ower or bath dispersant oil or a plain bubble bath available from Neals Yard remedies or any good essential supplier.

Neroli oil can help soothe mental tension helping you to unwind and enjoy a romantic evening, try burning a few drops in an oil burner to create a dreamy atmosphere.

Give yourself or your loved-one a relaxing foot massage using Geranium oil and Patchouli oil. These oils help to balance the emotions and create an earthy sensual effect and are also a natural aphrodisiac.

You can make a rich foot balm with these oils by melting a 15g of beeswax in a bain-marie. (place in a glass or ceramic bowl on top of a pan of simmering water) Once melted add 6 fl oz of sunfl ower oil and melt together then take off the heat. Stir in 5 drops of each essential oil then pour into a jar and leave to set. This is a nourishing and mood enhancing balm for massage and less messy than oil.

Here’s to experiencing feel good emotions with love for ourselves and others.

For more information on essential oil workshops, Aromatherapy treatments or Essential Blend Natural skincare products and facials email Sophie on 01273 462839 or email [email protected].
