The winter programme at Himos also includes snowmobiling, husky safaris, cross-country skiing trips, fun skiing events and wild parties at Himos Areena. The popular après-ski parties at Rinne Restaurant, opened last winter, will con-tinue.

The Himos Holiday Resort has grown into a versatile, international resort that is open all year round and provides an excellent setting for events. In summer, Himos Park is filled with cheerful peo-ple weekend after weekend. The magnif-

icent Riemu Terrace brings a touch of lux-ury to festival-goers. The festival season is kicked off by the Himos Midsummer Festival, which is followed a week later by the Iskelmä Festival. In July, interna-tional Eurodance stars of the 90s arrive at Jysäri and Pipefest features the big-gest names in Finnish hip hop.

HimosmaJoitUs offers more than 500 beds in high-quality cabins in the Himos area. A new restaurant, Rinne, was com-pleted at the bottom of the western slopes in the autumn of 2013. It also includes the reception of Himosmajoitus.

On the ground floor of Rinne is a superb bistro that is open all year round. Its tasty meals are cooked on an authentic char-

coal grill. The middle floor houses a buf-fet restaurant and a hamburger restau-rant, BurgeRinne. Meeting and sauna facilities, including an outdoor hot tub, can be found upstairs. Himosmajoitus thus has a full service offering for confer-ence customers as well. Himos après-ski parties are also held at Rinne Restaurant on high-season weekends. Vuorikah­vio café at the top of North Himos has the same opening hours as the northern

Rinne Restaurant, opened a year ago in West Himos, is more than ready for the new season. Stepping inside the building, you can sense the influence of the Alps and America in the à la carte bistro, buffet and hamburger bar.

Food is cooked with great care from fresh ingredients to please even the most de-manding customers. “Feedback has been incredible. We certainly know how to make great food,” says Jukka Auterinen, man-aging director of Himosmajoitus, smiling. He gained his knowledge and skills during 18 years of running the popular Vuorikah-vio Café – although with Rinne he wanted to take quality to a new level. “Feedback shows that we have succeeded, and there is

clearly a demand for a place serving finer food,” Auterinen says.

The heart of the bistro is an authentic char-coal grill, which ensures just the right tenderness for the entrecôte. For lovers of smoother meat, Auterinen recommends chicken grilled on charcoal or tenderloin, which is always a great choice. Vegetarians have loved the feta bundles in particular. As is fitting for a bistro, high quality is cou-pled with a no-frills style. The atmosphere is comfortable and relaxed – you can walk in wearing ski boots or a jacket.

Auterinen promises that first-rate ingredi-ents and careful cooking can also be tasted at the buffet, open at lunchtime in the win-

ter season, and at the hamburger bar, whose mega cheeseburger meal is served all year round.

Last winter’s hit, après-ski parties, will con-tinue this season. DJ Tico and Poju will warm people up on high-season Saturday afternoons. For corporate visitors, Auteri-nen also recommends the stylish meeting fa-cilities, which include a sauna section and a hot tub.

Rinne is the definitive choice in Jämsä when you want something more. “What could be better than eating well and admiring the spectacular scenery of the slopes,” Auteri-nen sums up.

For lovers of cRoss-coUntRy ski-ing, the Jämsä region offers a couple of hundred kilometres of varied trails that traverse beautiful landscapes. Part of the trails are lit between 8:00 and 22:00 when it is dark. Latureittipalvelu offers up-to-date infor-mation on the town’s network of trails. In-formation is provided in Finnish on the condition and maintenance of trails along with their length, lighting and the style of skiing they are suited for.

Some trails in the surroundings of the Himos Holiday Resort will be fully re-vamped, while trails in the town area will be renovated. “The existing networks will be improved for example by replacing trail lighting,” says Katja Pohjoismäki, man-ager of the town’s leisure services.

In the Himos area, hiking, skiing, cycling and snowmobile trails will be renewed. A further aim is to establish a trail for ski-ing with a dog, an easy family ski trail and a floodlit trail to be opened when the first snow falls. “Attention will be giv-en to the accessibility of the Himos area

and other routes. We will not build many new trails. Instead, we will focus on re-pairing the existing trails and frequent maintenance in wintertime,” Pohjoismä-ki emphasises. The Himosvuori ski co-operative is currently responsible for the maintenance of routes in the Himos area.

An important development measure will be marking the trails with international symbols and colours in order to serve for-eign users as well. “The objective is to

create multi-purpose routes and way-marked connection routes between differ-ent areas. The central point of the routes will also be the ‘landmark’ of Himos. In addition, we intend to build a bridge over the Sound of Yijälänsalmi that can be used throughout the year,” Pohjoismäki says.

“Snowmobile trails were built between Halli and Juupajoki and between Jäm-sä and Kuhmoinen a few years ago. The trails are also partially suited to cross-country biking and hiking. Rest areas have also been renovated, and two new lean-to shelters have already been built along the trails”, Pohjoismäki says, high-lighting improvements already completed.

fisHing entHUsiasts can choose from several excellent sites. Survosen koski and Virtalankoski in Koskenpää are pop-ular spots for white-water fishing. River Jämsänjoki near the centre of Jämsä is ide-al for trolling. Lake Patalahti is easily ac-cessible from the Himos Holiday Resort.

WanHa Witonen canoeing RoUte is named after the five-mark-ka banknote issued in 1909 depicting the lake scenery of Rasuanniemi in Jämsän-koski, drawn by Eliel Saarinen. The route begins at Petäjävesi, passes the village of Koskenpää, Jämsänkoski and the City of Jämsä, and ends in Lake Päijänne. The to-tal length of the route is 75 km, but there are also lovely shorter stretches to choose from. Wilderness and man-made cultural landscapes alternate along the route. Rap-ids and narrow sections of lakes and rivers give canoeists a good impression of Central Finland's beautiful nature. Most of the rap-ids along the route are easy and manage-able, but inexperienced canoeists can also pass them by on land.

For more detailed instructions and a route description, pick up a waterproof Wanha Witonen route map from one of the compa-nies along the route.

isoJäRvi nationaL PaRk is a per-fect destination for those looking for peace-ful forest and lake scenery. Long, narrow lakes and fissure valleys called ‘hoilos’ make the region a wilderness-like and memorable place to visit. The national park has around 30 km of marked trails. There are many rest areas, as well as lean-to shel-ters, which make it possible to spend the night in the area. Most of the park is locat-ed on the southern shore of Lake Isojärvi and it includes more than 20 islands, so the area can also be explored by canoe or boat. Other excellent options for Hiking are the Pukinvuori fitness trail, the Palvia duckboards and the more demanding hik-ing route over the three peaks of Himos. A 75 km-long cycle route runs from Himos via Juokslahti and Vekkula to Jämsä. Jämsän-niemi is also an excellent destination for cy-clists.

This is the 20th year of operation of Eräopaspalvelu Talvi. Entrepreneur and wilderness guide Ilkka Talvi says he is celebrating the anniversary by working: “I love this job. Every day in the forest is a special day.”

canoeing and tHe scent of tHe foRestIn the company of Talvi, you can go hik-ing, ice-fishing, snowshoeing, abseiling, do archery or spend an evening in nature. Canoeing was also recently added to the list, as the region’s well-known canoeing entrepreneur ‘retired’ and made an irre-sistible offer on his equipment. “Canoeists got worried, but now even the traditional Wednesday evening paddling will contin-ue,” Talvi enthuses.

An interesting new activity introduced by Talvi is the ‘Path of the Senses’, along which the forest is experienced by stimu-lating the senses. “I wish to offer people well-being and great memories,” Talvi says, smiling. “However, our best product is the campfire, which no one ever tires of.”

In addition to ecological operations, re-sponding to customers’ wishes is most im-portant to Talvi. He wants to share the good feeling that he gets from nature. “15 minutes in the woods keeps the doctor away”, Talvi says. Walking on stable gran-ite provides stillness, whereas in a canoe water is the important element whose sur-face shows the scenery from a whole new perspective.

tHe Best RoUtesTalvi praises the trail networks and maps of Jämsä. The selection of destinations is positively overwhelming. For hikers, he recommends the spectacular Vaaruvuori, with its fine views of Lake Päijänne, or the extraordinary Rotkovuori, where fjord-like Lake Ruuhijärvi glistens in a 40 me-tre-deep ravine.

If you want somewhere quiet, Isojärvi Na-tional Park is the place to go. For canoe-ists, Talvi recommends Lake Kankaris-vesi with its sandy ridges, which is part of the Wanha Witonen route, or the nar-row Lake Patalahti. All of these also have

many rest areas. Along River Jämsänjoki, canoeists can admire the beautiful gar-dens of the riverside residents. The large open waters of Lake Päijänne are suited to more experienced paddlers.

WHy not tRy canoeing?Talvi advises beginners to forget about long distances – a couple of hours in a canoe is enough. He naturally recom-mends paddling courses, and encourages the whole family to give it a try. It is easy for small children to travel in a canoe. A double kayak is a good choice for paddlers with less experience. Talvi has seen how memorable family trips are to children.

The wilderness guide knows why the land-scape in Jämsä is so enchanting: “I am completely spellbound by the diversity and beauty of this region.”

pGA Golf Pro Jussi Räihä, the in-structor at Himos, says that praise has been given for the condition of the

greens. The scenery has also been noticed. “On a Finnish scale, the differences in alti-tude are rather large, and the slopes of Hi-mos are right next to the course. In the con-struction phase, the aim was to preserve as much of the natural environment as possi-ble.” Between fairways are conservation ar-eas, lime forests and brooks.

smootH PLayingThe full-length 18-hole course attracts play-ers from all over Finland. “Our priority is to make playing smooth, since people come here to relax and enjoy themselves. For exam-ple, we have widened and cleared the edges of the fairways,” Lahtinen says. Himos Golf

is one of few resort-style courses in Finland that also provides accommodation and other forms of entertainment. In future, competi-tions such as the Iskelmä Open will be held in conjunction with events.

Share ownership is not required at Himos Golf; a valid golf club membership and a handicap card are all you need to be able to play. “The course is rather challenging, so some caution is in order in many places,” Räi-hä says. “Beginners are all right if they use the front tee,” Lahtinen adds. Instruction is also available. Räihä encourages people to give golf a try: “Golf is what you make of it. You don’t have to take it too seriously!”

goLf viLLage as an attRactionHimos also offers an opportunity to buy your own holiday home in the Golf Village. “You can get a plot, a holiday home or a turnkey package including fittings and kitchenware,” Lahtinen enthuses. The plots have great views of the course and slopes. The style is in-ternational, with fairways criss-crossing be-tween the houses. Municipal infrastructure is already in place, so construction can start in no time. In the long run, investing in the Golf Village is a real opportunity. The cen-tral location, diversity and focused develop-ment of Himos create a stable basis for a fu-ture in which golf is a major attraction.

storey restaurant building, Riemu Ter­race, rises high above the festival area and can host up to 2,000 visitors. Rie-mu adds a touch of luxury to large pub-lic events, such as the 400-person VIP area on the top floor. Downstairs is a toi-let with 100 cubicles, which makes Himos Park a unique festival area.

The size, cutting-edge technology and superb services of Himos Park make it a perfect place for organising both large and smaller events. The location by the la-

to festival-goers. In the summer of 2014, the Himos Midsummer Festival attracted 43,000 visitors and the Iskelmä Festival an all-time high of 34,000 visitors. Inter-national pop stars of the 90s drew a re-cord number of 13,000 people to Jysäri. Pi-pefest also has its devoted audience. For a couple of years now, the Himos Holiday Re-sort has had 115,000 visitors in the sum-mer season.

jämsä is home to several felt facto-ries and outlets. In addition, the re-gion is rich in artisans, sheep farms,

artists, various associations and exhibi-tions related to the traditional felt indus-try. Jämsä Felt Summer will be held for the 17th time.

The best-known felt facto-ry in the re-gion is Lahti­set, in the village of Par-tala, which manu-factures knee-high felt boots that are famous all over the country. Besides

the boots, the factory outlet of Lahtiset sells felt socks, slippers, hats, rugs and table-setting items. The selection also in-cludes designer felt boots by Aki Choklat t h at boldly blend modernity with

Filtti’s felt exhibition will be displayed at Galleria Kivipankki in Jämsä for the 17th time. The exhibition is entitled ‘Mustaa & Valkoista / Black & White’. The theme will inspire feltmakers again to create a new kind of collection of extraordinary felt works.

The international part of the exhibition will come from the United Kingdom. Felt artist Caroline Merrell will bring together the works of 30 British feltartists. The in-ternational exhibition will have the same theme as the members of Filtti.

The exhibition will not be all black, grey and white, since the skilful use of col-

ours is integral to felt making. In recent years, the range of works has been stun-ning – there have been flat works hung on the wall, put on a table or floor, as well as sculptural, three-dimensional works.

Felt graffiti will be built for the third time in the garden of Galleria Kivipankki. The various plants in the garden will provide an interesting setting for felt graffiti works. Visitors can also admire the magnificent and unique Kivipankki building from out-side while strolling around the garden.

Kivipankki is ideally suited to felt exhi-bitions. The large room downstairs has enough space for numerous works, which

create wonderful combinations of forms and colour. The small rooms upstairs di-vide the works into various collections.

The opening ceremony of the exhibition will be held on 29 June 2015 at 16:00. Opening hours: from 30 Jun to 3 Aug 2015 daily 12:00–17:00

Kahvila Akuliina is a real gem of a café with a distinctive style and diverse offer-ings. It is located in the centre of Jäm-sä by the Market Square. In the daytime Akuliina is a cosy café and in the evening an atmospheric meeting place. Its speciali-ties are theme days and events where peo-ple can enjoy live music and sports. Akuliina has enriched the town centre for 20 years. Many locals are devoted cus-tomers. The owner, Tuomo Mäyrämä­ki, has been here from the start: “I just needed some more work to do in the sum-mer, but then I got carried away,” he says, laughing. Akuliina was born out of a de-sire to offer something new and different in Jämsä. Mäyrämäki says that culture and themes were strongly present from the outset. “We want to get people mov-ing,” he adds.

Despite its air of nostalgia, Akuliina is a relaxed and youthful place. Although the café only seats 35 customers, large events can be held in the surrounding market area. In summer, Akuliina also has a sun-ny terrace. Different wishes are consid-ered when planning events. Recent exam-ples include folk music, a street basketball

tournament, a kids’ autumn celebration and a rock band. Akuliina’s annual sum-mer festival is one of the absolute high points of the summer. Last summer’s festi-val featured Semmarit, an unconventional male choir, and the rock band Neljä Ruu-sua. Acoustic Wednesdays bring on stage young local talent.

Mäyrämäki gives a promise to everyone coming in: “You will be warmly welcomed and greeted by a smiling face. And the del-icacies are always fresh and baked on the spot.”

The vil-lage will form the heart of the built-up area, providing quays and other servic-es to boaters as well as a restaurant. A dense, vil-lage-like area of terraced houses and resi-dential buildings with their own stretches of shore will be built right next to the har-bour. They will be designed to be lived in all year round.
