Jämsä leans firmly on forestry, aviation, and tourism. The leaders of the entrepreneurship of Jämsä; the paper mills of UPM, the aviation group of Patria, and the Holiday Resort of Himos are widely known, both nationally and internationally. Jämsä is logistically located within good transport connections, at the crossroads of highways 9 and 24; and the railway traffic is quite busy to the North and South. Approximately 10 million people live within the scope of 400 km from Jämsä, Saint Petersburg included. In order to meet the demands of entrepreneurs, a new business park has been prepared on the Myllymäki II site. In addition, the surroundings of crossroads between the highways to Jyväskylä, Tampere, and Lahti, offer a great place for trade. The 3.6 million passing vehicles on the highways present significant potential. Himos is one of the most popular all year round holiday resorts in Finland and owing to the current spa and recreational investments, it will continue to grow and develop

even more. The surroundings of Jämsä present plenty of good choices for housing. Among other things, in the vicinity of Himos, on the shore of Lake Päijänne, a new holiday village is been zoned, Päijänranta, which merges holiday and permanent housing. The possibilities for education are diverse in the region. The vocational college of Jämsä, and the high schools and universities of Tampere and Jyväskylä assure skilled labour. World-class knowledge and skills, strong en-trepreneurship among small and medium-sized firms, good recreational settings, and a good location into the bargain – these are the elements of Jämsä. Feel free to contact us, so that we can further discuss the possibilities that Jämsä region can offer you for entrepreneurial activities, as a living environment, and for holiday or recreational needs.

The Finnish Cheese Company (Joki-laakson Juusto Oy), located in Jämsä, is the only producer of gourmet cheese spreads in Finland. The vari-ety of products also includes grated cheese, sliced cheese, and special fla-voured cheese. The managing director of the company, Esa Luomanperä, reveals that the company has operat-ed in Jämsä since 2003. He considers that the benefits of Jämsä are its cen-tral location, good transport connec-tions, and the warm atmosphere of

The main industries of Jämsä are the wood-processing industry and closely related forestry services and sub-contracting industries, including the aviation and tourism industries. Many top specialists are working in Jämsä. For instance, here you can find the UPM Jämsä River Mills, which manufacture quality print paper and special papers for global markets. These factories form a unity, which is one of the largest in Europe.

The wood processing subcontractors are mainly members of the metal and mechanical industries. In this field, the largest employers in Jämsä are Terässaari Ltd, Jyki Ltd, MKH Press Ltd, and Jokilaakson Asen-nusyhtymä (River Valley Installation Group). Jyki Ltd, which is located in Längelmäki, is the leading manufac-turer of timber trailers in the North-ern Countries. Nisula Forest Ltd, on its behalf, is oriented in the design, development, and manufacturing of forestry equipment and devices.

The possibilities for companies to grow and develop significantly depend on the surrounding economic environment. The lively and developing Jämsä is a good place to live and do business. Besides its central location in Finland, the benefits of this city, with a little less than 22,000 residents, are flexible services and at a low cost level, among others.

In Jämsä, there is also an interna-tional corporation for the defence, safety and aviation industries, Patria Aviation, which is one of the lead-ing producers of lifetime supporting systems for aircraft and helicopters in Europe. Their services cover main-tenance, repair, and modification services for the body, engine, and devices, including pilot education. In addition, Patria designs and manu-factures demanding structures from composites for aircrafts and space objects in Jämsä. The company is actively involved in the development programmes for new composite technologies.

A new business area has been pre-pared in Jämsä for the needs of industry and technical services. The Business Park Myllymäki II is located besides the old industrial area, Myl-lymäki I, in Jämsänkoski. The location of the area is excellent, considering the large scale industry. The road to Mänttä begins right beside the area, and the distance to Highways 9 and 24 is only 7 km. The heavy road transport drives through the old and new Myllymäki business areas. The railway connection, on the other hand, enables even larger deliveries.

31 plots lie ready to be built on the area of 16 hectares. The surfaces vary from 2 000 to 18 000 square meters. The plot area can be tailored, accord-ing to each company’s needs. All the municipal engineering works are done; the roads are paved, water and sew-age systems have been installed, and the street lighting is ready. You can begin construction works, even with a fast schedule. The ground is flat, sandy soil, so that it is easy to lay founda-tions on and build any constructions.

The Myllymäki II territory fits best for businesses, which will not need large outdoor stockpiling, as the goal is to maintain the parklike landscape of the territory. Every other year, the forestry and machinery trade fair FinnMETKO is held on and around the Myllymäki II territory. From this point of view, this territory will be perfect for companies, which have something to do with forestry or wood process-ing, such as, harvesting and logging technologies, related manufacturing, maintenance, service, bioenergy, or others.

The Old and New Meet in MyllymäkiThe traditional industrial area Myl-lymäki I consists of several companies from the metal industry, maintenance, service, transport, forestry and con-struction fields. Among others, you can find Thyssen Krupp and the paper mills of UPM Jämsänkoski in the area. This industrial cluster, numbering over 50 companies, UPM included, provides jobs to over 700 people.

The crossroad of highways to Tam-pere and Lahti is the liveliest place for trade in Jämsä. The territory already consists of two service stations, fast food restaurants, a hotel and a caf-eteria. After the construction works of a Tokmanni department store will be completed, the ensemble of ser-vices in the area will become more representative. However, only a small portion of the business opportunities have been exploited. The territory still offers splendid places for trade.

The crossroads territory serves both pass-by traffic and customers from Jämsä. The area would be most suitable for outlet shops, restaurant services, department stores, shop-ping centres, and specialized stores oriented towards motorists. The area is perfect for companies seeking good visibility. This junction of significant highways is also excellent for compa-nies who are looking for good logistic connections. As the industrial plots are totally ready, the construction works can start easily.

Downhill Skiing for 30 Years Within just 8 kilometres from the services of the centre of Jämsä lies the Holiday Centre Himos, which has offered tourism services since 1984. Over the past 30 years, the centre has grown and become an all year round, international tourism destination and an excellent environment for organiz-ing large events. On the Himosvuori hills, you can find the largest and most versatile downhill skiing slopes of Southern and Central Finland with up to 21 ski runs. The slopes repre-sent both easy and challenging rides for both snowboarders and skiers. The winter programme of Himos also includes snowmobile riding, dog sleigh rides, cross country skiing, after ski, and party weekends at Himos Arena night club.

Tourism All Year RoundAt the moment, the Himos Holiday Re-sort is able to accommodate, roughly, 4,000 tourists. There are many res-

taurants and diverse activity services. The estimated amount of tourists is about 400,000 visitors, one day visitors included. The greatest sum-mer events are Himos Juhannus rock festival, a Finnish pop music festival Iskelmä, a rock festival Jysäri, and a hip-hop festival Pipefest. Over the past couple of years, the amount of summer visitors at Himos has reached around 115,000 clients. According to the development plans, in the near future, a spa hotel and approximately 200 new holiday dwellings will be built in the area.

Golf on the Pay & Play PrincipleThe full-scale 18-hole golf course of Himos, opened in summer 2013, at-tracts players from all over Finland. Himos Golf is one of the rare Finnish resort courses, which, in addition to golf, provides accommodation and full scale entertainment. The golf course and the surrounding future golf village will have a significant relevance on the development of the area.

Over the years, HimosLomat Group has grown and expanded enormously. In almost 30 years, it has become a remarkable company offering holiday services all year round. Now their future seems even brighter, as some substantial investments are been made in the tourism industry at Hi-mos.

The operation of the companies of the HimosLomat group include a rental agency of holiday dwellings, mainte-nance and cleaning services, several restaurants, Himos Arena nightclub with a stage for artists, Himos Festival which organizes festivals, and Himos Safaris which provides activity services and weekly programmes. In addition, the company is a stockholder of the Himos Golf company. The latest invest-ment of HimosLomat makes them one of the owners of the future Himos Spa.

The company rents out around 400 holiday cottages, which is as much ac-commodation capacity as in the centre of Jyväskylä. HimosLomat has almost 80 employees all year round, and even more during the summer season. Their turnover is over 20 million euros.

The chief executive of HimosLomat, Tiina Mäntyharju, looks towards the future with pleasure.– The investments made at Himos are greater than in any other Finnish

resorts at the moment, she states.Even now, there are several large projects taking place. The two years old golf course is starting to find its players. Another major investment is the starting spa project, which will increase the demand on holiday dwell-ings and other services.– Every time a Holiday Club builds a spa somewhere, it means enormous growth to the other companies in the area as well. I would assume that the next 10 years will a period of clear growth for us, Mäntyharju considers.

Recently, HimosLomat has invested in Himos Park, developing it to be fit for organizing large events. Now it provides various events and festivals from May to Sep-tember, even on a weekly basis. The largest and probably best known event is the Himos Ju-hannus Festival (Midsummer Fes-tival), which gath-ered up to 44,000 visitors during summer 2015.

Mäntyharju strongly believes that the investments will bear fruit to entre-preneurs, both in Himos and in the entire Jämsä. According to a customer satisfaction survey which the entrepre-neurs of Himos ordered, during the winter season 2012-2013, the clients of Himos used, on average, 164 euros per family, in order to buy services in the centre of Jämsä.

Tiina Mäntyharju has no doubts about the success factors of the company:

– Himos is located in the centre of Finland. It is a short way to travel, practically from any part of Finland. In addition, Himos is located right beside the Highway-9, and close to the railway station of Jämsä,

which makes it easy to come here. It is easy to have a vacation in Himos: you can reach the services from your holiday cottage by foot.

The Forecast of HimosLomat: the Next 10 Years will be Clear Growth

”The current investments made at Himos are greater than at any other Finnish resorts at the present time.

For instance, during working age, the house can be used as a holiday home, but later during pension times, it can become a permanent dwelling. Modern tech-nology makes it possible to work remotely, whilst enjoying the peace and beautiful scenery of Päijänranta, in the middle of an inspiring environ-ment.

PThe detailed town plan of Päijänranta will be carried out in three phases. During the first phase, a marina build-ing and the surrounding facilities with docks will be built, including infra-structure for holiday and permanent housing sites, ten of which will have their own private beaches.

The first step towards realizing this onshore development is to remove the existing road, so that the construction plans can be carried out.

Holiday and residential plots need to be developed, according to the demands of permanent housing. • Päijänranta is located within good road connections, in the vicinity of the services of the Himos Holiday Resort, on the shore of Lake Päijänne.

A new, high quality holiday village, along with a marina, Päijänranta, will be built on the shores of Lake Päi-jänne, in the Eastern part of Himos. A Letter of Intent was signed on May 12th 2015 on major investments in Himos by Lemminkäinen, Holiday Club Resorts Ltd., and HimosLomat Group. This agreement starts the construction preparations for the spa, a hotel, and new holiday housing on the territory between the Himos Arena and the Himos Center buildings. The investment of this first phase will be about 30 million euros, as the whole project will cost over 50 million euros.

Huge Effect on Jämsä by the ProjectThe construction works will involve, directly and indirectly, over 100 people for a couple of years. Directly, the project will create new permanent jobs in Jämsä for 50 to 60 man-years, and, indirectly, almost the same amount.Holiday Club wants to build a versatile, entertaining high-quality resort spa at Himos, measuring approximately 3,000 square meters. The spa hotel will have around 120 rooms. In addition, about 200 new holiday apartments will be constructed in phases around the spa hotel.

“We believe that due to its location and versatility, Himos will become one of the most significant holiday destinations in Finland. Holiday Club has plenty of experience on how the construction of a spa and other recreational objects has increased the interest in the whole resort. Therefore, we believe that this project will start several other investments and bring growth in commercial activities at Himos. They will produce more income to the city of Jämsä and create new jobs”, the director of Holiday Club Resorts Ltd., Tapio Anttila states.

A Spa Project at Himos for Over 50 Million Euros

The Project Increases the Attractiveness of Himos

Many participants, such as Lemminkäinen, sees Himos as a growing and developing holiday centre, because it has such good factors for success: the central location of the territory, excellent ski slopes, large events all year round, great investments in Himos Park, and a full scale golf course, which are the true strengths of Himos. Year after year, the fame of Himos as an all year holiday resort has increased among people.

“During the last few years, we have invested over seven million euros in the year-round services of Himos. The spa with all its services will increase the attractiveness of Himos even more. The future location of the spa is excellent, as you can find within walking distance the ski slopes, Himos Arena, Himos Park with all its events, the golf course, and even the services of the meeting centre School”, rejoices the chairman of the board, Hannu Haljala, from the HimosLomat company group, which owns the land plot of the spa.

Himos annually hosts 200,000 accommodation nights on average. The number of day visitors at the resort is also remarkable, as tourists enjoy the services on the slopes, at Himos Arena parties, and various other service points and events. During the winter, the accommodation volume is higher than during the summer.

The City Administration of Jämsä has plenty of vacant plots with field, forest, or lakeside views, including some vacant plots on existing single-family housing areas. The main goal is to make the environment more attractive for tourists and local residents.

The plots that are located in Halli are all within the centre. The services include both lower and upper compre-

hensive school levels, grocery stores, a pharmacy, and a library, among oth-ers. The settlement of Halli is located 25 km from the centre of Jämsä, on the shore of Lake Eväjärvi. Jan-Henrik Merihonka, from Jämsän-koski, made a long trip around the world before he came back home. The United States, Russia, Helsinki, and Tampere could not offer this fa-ther what he wanted for his children:

– We wanted colours, water, and clean air. Not just a plain concrete desert. We also fell in love with the simple way of moving around: shop-ping with parking lots close by, no waiting at traffic lights.

Mr. Merihonka works as a technical writer in the medical industry. His employer is a company from Kem-pele, Innokas Medical, and Merihonka works in their office at Helsinki. Nevertheless, he lives in Jämsänkoski, as he is a remote worker.– My work is hi-tech, from Jämsä, Merihonka laughs. He writes handbooks and service manuals in English for a patient monitoring display used in hospitals. – Actually, the books are ready now, and my work is mostly involved updating

Hi-tech as Remote Work at Jämsä

and maintaining the instructions. The work is very accurate, as the terminol-ogy and the required content is very strictly regulated. The manuals need to be universally applicable, but at the same time, tailored to the needs of a particular customer.– On my typical workday, I take my little son to daycare and then log into my computer. I eat lunch when I re-member. At the end of the day, I bring my child home, and my wife comes back from her work. The working hours bank is a flexible system, and, therefore, I can arrange my working time to fit project work, Merihonka explains. – I go to Kempele once or twice a year, and approximately once a

month, I need to visit Helsinki. Those times, I prefer to travel on the Pen-dolino train, which stops at Jämsä. I board at 5.50 am and arrive in Hel-sinki at 8.30 am. I leave the office at 5 pm and get home to Jämsänkoski by 7.30 pm. Whilst on the train, I can conveniently use some of the time working.

I think that in the future, work could be done remotely much more often, as projects - at least some of it, Mr. Merihonka considers.– Of course, it demands a good internal infrastructure from the com-pany, so that the bits will travel freely between a home and the office. The tasks must be thoroughly planned, as well. But, most of all, it requires a cer-tain attitude from both the employer and the employee.

– The employer must trust his/her subordinates. The personality also affects the working abilities. Some people like to work alone, while oth-ers need a more social environment. Working at home requires learning a new way to keep oneself sharp, in order to separate work hours from lei-sure time. Of course, one has to learn to pull oneself together as one would do in the office, Merihonka notes.

The Future

and the library could become a tri-angle of events in the city.– We need to ensure that the grocery shops will remain in the centre, in-stead of trickling towards the highway crossroads area, Stenlund adds.

We need to perceive and value the beautiful River Jämsänjoki and its har-bour more, as the river flows through the city centre as an aorta through the heart.– For example, it would be nice to have a restaurant by the river, Sten-lund visions.Mr. Stenlund likes jogging, and he thinks that the riverside of the River Jämsänjoki is a remarkable common recreational area in the city. There-fore, Mr. Stenlund has a vision of a recreational route that follows the banks of the river. His view is to cre-ate a united network of pedestrian and bicycle ways on both sides of the river.– The River Jämsänjoki has a strong position in the city, and the welfare and vitality of the river are very important to the citizens, Stenlund captures.

The City Centre Becomes a Living Core of the HeartThe area town plan of the Jämsä city forms a heart, which unites the popu-lation centre of Jämsänkoski, Seppola, the nuclear centre of Jämsä, and the holiday centre of Himos. – Our goal is to build these areas up and join them together in order to create a more united band of urbanized area, Kari Stenlund, the urban designer of Jämsä City, explains. The area town plan observes the future of these structural areas at least up to the year 2030, probably even up to the year 2040. In the middle of the heart formation is a lively city centre, and Mr. Stenlund has a strong vision for its development.– This area town plan and the surveys we make would increase the permit-ted building volume in the town cen-tre, and aim at boosting the construc-tion of higher buildings in the centre.

In Jämsä, a significant growth centre is, of course, the holiday resort of Himos, but the vision of Mr. Stenlund is to enforce the core centre of Jämsä, Seppola, to become a strong and lively city.– Our aim is to build a comfortable, compact, and city-like town centre for our residents, he states.– With the help of the heart model, we can build a functional city centre

and put all small details in place, so that the residents will enjoy them-selves and the centre will become lively and inviting.

According to Mr. Stenlund, this goal can be reached by developing the Seppola district in a controlled way. The construction works in the very centre should be oriented upwards. One remarkable mark in the developing core centre could be a new library building:– The future library should be a beautiful and time-resistant building, which, preferably, would function perfectly, even after a hundred years. The territory between the river harbour, the market square,
