For skiers and snowboarders, there is the Himosvuori Ski Resort with its 21 slopes. The winter programme also includes snow-mobiling, husky safaris, cross-country ski-ing, various skiing events and popular par-ty weekends at Himos Arena. The area's restaurant and conference services will be complemented by a new restaurant build-ing, to be opened for the winter season at the bottom of the western slopes.

The full-length Himos Golf Course, undu-lating amidst the beautiful landscape, has been praised for its level of challenge and diversity. Come and test the course your-self!

In the summer, Himos Park will be filled with cheerful people weekend after week-end. The festival season will begin in mid-summer with The Voice Juhannus Hi-mosfestival, followed by Iskelmä Festival, Jysäri and hip hop festival Pipefest. The expansion of Himos Park will continue, and more than two million euros will be invest-ed in this project over the next two years.

Summer in Jämsä features art and felt ex-hibitions, summer theatres, the Akulii-na Summer Festival, rallies and a num-ber of lovely markets and village events. In between events, you can admire the stun-ning summer scenery on board a Tuulikki

boat or along the Wanha Witonen canoeing route, for example.

Himos Holiday Centre has grown into a ver-satile, international resort that is open all year round and provides an excellent set-ting for events. Himos has its focus firmly on the future. There are plans for a spa ho-tel and Päijänranta harbour village, which will provide cosy holiday homes, boating services and restaurants. Read more on page 28.

Himos and the Jämsä Region offer all this and many other fun things to do and see – within easy reach, year round!

Himos accommodation offers more than 500 beds in high-quality cab-ins in the Himos area, as well as excel-lent restaurant services. A new restau-rant, Rinne, has been completed at the bottom of the western slopes. It also hous-es the reception of Himos Accommodation. Downstairs is a stylish bistro that is open all year round, and BurgeRinne, a buf-fet and hamburger restaurant, serves cus-

tomers on the middle floor during the ski-ing season. Meeting and sauna facilities, including an outdoor hot tub, can be found upstairs. Vuorikahvio café at the top of North Himos has the same opening hours as the northern slopes. Read more at www.himosmajoitus.fi

The restaurant services in the Himos area have been expanded with a new restau-rant building constructed in West Himos. “The restaurant is called Rinne. It com-prises three floors, so there are various op-tions for meals,” says Jukka Auterinen, Managing Director of Himos Accommoda-tion. The first and middle floors house a bistro and a buffet and hamburger restau-rant, and the third floor has meeting facil-ities, including a large sauna and an out-door hot tub.

The downstairs bistro mainly serves food cooked on a charcoal grill. “The focus is on steaks, but a range of other options are also available from the á la carte menu. The bistro is open all year round, and it is intended not only for skiers but also for oth-er tourists and locals,” Auterinen says.

moRe caPacityDuring the high season, Himos is very crowded and its excellent slopes could draw even more visitors. The new restaurant makes rush hour easier and increases op-tions. “The number of seats has doubled, so rush hour will not be as busy and custom-ers can be served faster,” Auterinen notes.

Himos Accommodation is committed to high quality and cooking everything from scratch. “We serve great food that is worth travelling a bit for. We also bake our pas-tries on the spot,” Auterinen says and urg-es visitors to try the jam doughnuts, which may well be the best in Finland.

seRvice is tHe coRneR-stoneHimos Accommodation has been serv-ing customers for more than 18 years in various locations, such as at Vuorikahvio café on top of Himos. “We want to create a good, warm and comfortable atmosphere, and we have received a lot of positive feed-back from people who enjoy eating with us. Serving at tables makes the experience complete,” Auterinen explains.

For lovers of cRoss-coUntRy ski-ing, the Jämsä Region offers a couple of hundred kilometres of varied trails that traverse beautiful landscapes. The illumi-nated trails are lit when dark between 8 am and 10 pm. Maintenance of the trails begins when enough snow has fallen.

good tRaiLs foR aLL LeveLs of JoggeRsAnssi would take his guests to the top of Himos or to Pitkävuori tower, which are the best places for taking in the magnifi-cent views. “I mostly exercise in the Himos area, which has very demanding terrain but also easier, more enjoyable trails,” Ans-si says. Another favourite place of his is the grounds near the Pitkävuori ski jump-ing tower and Kaipola jogging trail. “On a Finnish scale, this is excellent terrain for training. The only thing that is missing is the high mountains of Europe,” Anssi says, laughing.

“In wintertime, I mainly use the Särkijär-vi–Pykälä cabin–Himos route. There are plenty of ski trails in midwinter, so you don't have to go back the way you came. It's a pleasure to see that there's no need to go all the way to Lapland in search of good

skiing conditions and trails. Jämsä and Himos should be more proud of their ex-cellent trail network,” Anssi says.

Heading to tHe oLymPicsAnssi represents Jämsänkosken Ilves, and he is one of the seven members of Pe-toteam. “I was born in Jämsä, and this is where I started my skiing career. Pe-toteam is a great gang, our team spirit is high and everyone works hard to achieve our common goal,” Anssi explains.

The Sochi Winter Olympics will be held in the coming winter. Anssi's main goal is to compete in the Winter Games with the world's best skiers. “The stakes are high this year. I have come a long way to be able to participate and succeed in the Olympics, and this will be the measure of all exercises performed during my ca-reer,” Anssi remarks, describing the long journey of a top athlete.

Lake Päijänne, numerous smaller lakes and the glorious sandy beach-es and rapids of Lake Kankarisvesi

provide many opportunities for water ad-ventures. You can make a day trip to Iso-järvi National Park or spend the night in the bosom of nature. The Tuulikki boats will take you to the gorgeous lake scenery of Päijänne directly from the port in the centre of Jämsä.

fisHing entHUsiasts can choose from several excellent sites. Survosenkos-ki and Virtalankoski in Koskenpää are popular spots for white-water fishing. Jämsänjoki River in the vicinity of the cen-tre of Jämsä is ideal for trolling. Patalah-ti Bay is easily accessible from Himos Hol-iday Centre.

a cRUise on Lake PäiJänne is an excellent way to spend a summer’s day

or a sweet summer evening. On the Tuu-likki boats of Päijännematkat Koskinen Oy, you can see and experience Lake Päi-jänne almost every day during the sum-mer season. Cruises start conveniently from the riverbanks of Jämsänjoki, in the centre of Jämsä, taking you to the middle of beautiful Lake Päijänne and all the way to Pihlajakoski and Luhanka. On a char-tered cruise, you can reserve the entire ship for your own group and spend a mem-orable day on Lake Päijänne. Read more at www.paijannematkat.com

WanHa Witonen canoeing RoUte is named after the five-markka banknote issued in 1909 depicting the lake scenery of Rasuanniemi in Jämsänkoski, drawn by Eliel Saarinen. The route be-gins at Petäjävesi, passes the village of Koskenpää, Jämsänkoski and the City of Jämsä, and ends in Lake Päijänne. The to-

tal length of the route is 75 km, but there are also lovely shorter stretches to choose from. Wilderness and man-made cultur-al landscapes alternate along the route. Rapids and narrow sections of lakes and rivers give canoeists a good impression of Central Finland's beautiful nature. Most of the rapids along the route are easy and manageable, but inexperienced canoeists can also pass them on land.

For more detailed instructions and a route description, pick up a waterproof Wanha Witonen route map!

isoJäRvi nationaL PaRk is a per-fect destination for those looking for peace-ful forest and lake scenery. Long, narrow lakes and fissure valleys called ‘hoilos’ make the region a wilderness-like and memorable place to visit. The national park has around 30 km of marked trails.

There are many spots along the trails for resting, as well as lean-tos, which make it possible to spend the night in the area. Most of the park is located on the southern shore of Lake Isojärvi and it includes more than 20 islands, so the area can also be ex-plored by canoe or boat. Further informa-tion and a map are available at www.outdoors.fi

Other excellent options for Hiking are the Pukinvuori fitness trail, the Palvia duckboards and the more demanding hik-ing route over the three peaks of Himos. A new 75 km-long cycling route runs from Himos via Juokslahti and Vekkula to Jäm-sä. Jämsänniemi is also an excellent des-tination for cyclists. Visit our website to print out maps!

PGA Golf Pro Jussi Räihä, the in-structor at Himos, says that praise was also given for the scenery. “On

a Finnish scale, the differences in altitude are rather large, and the slopes of Himos are right next to the course. In the construction phase, the aim was to preserve as much of the natural environment as possible.”

The course will be developed on the basis of feedback provided by players. “We have taken measures intended to facilitate play-ing and make it smoother, such as shortened fairways and modified teeing grounds,” Mäntyharju explains. Areas surrounding the course have been cleared and will be cleared more to make it easier to find balls that have been hit into the rough.

vaRying sHaPesHimos Golf Course (18-hole) is targeted at players of all skill levels. “At first, it is advis-able to try playing using the driving range with red markers. Players have also had the option of playing on the 9-hole practice

course (par 3), where they have been able to take the time they need and practise ap-proach shots and putting. Time spent on the practice course makes it much easier to move on to the bigger course,” Räihä says.

The new course also features an interest-ing water driving range, i.e. a practice area where floating balls are hit out into a pond. There are also a few floating greens in the pond. “The range is a good example of how nature has been taken into consideration at Himos. It is built on a boggy site, and peat from the bottom of the water area has been used in the construction of the golf course,” Mäntyharju says.

Himos is a pay-and-play golf course. This means that anyone who has a valid golf club member-ship card and a handicap card is allowed to play on the large course. Himos also offers golf lessons where players can hone their swinging techniques and playing. Räihä encourages peo-ple to give golf a try. “Golf is what you make of it. You don't have to be so serious about it!”

goLf viLLage UndeR constRUctionA Golf Village open throughout the year is being constructed next to the course and on the edges of the fairways. The resort will be a part of the services of Himos. Plots and finished holiday homes are on sale in the area. “Holiday homes are being built and purchased for own use, but renting has also increased. This makes Himos an interesting place to invest in. By renting out their prop-erty, owners can also enjoy their investment themselves,” Mäntyharju says. Currently, the area has municipal infrastructure, paved roads and street lighting for 70 plots. The area will be expanded according to de-mand. The construction of the entire resort is estimated to take 5–10 years, after which there will be about 300 holiday homes.

in the summer, four large festivals draw crowds to Himos. In addition, the Jämsä Region offers a wide spectrum of summer events, such as markets, theatre performances and carnivals.

In the winter, Himos hosts skiing events, activities for the whole family and parties at Himos Arena with top Finnish performers. Jämsä offers high-standard concerts, art exhibitions and much more.

Lots of events!F

estivals and other summer events draw as many as 115,000 visi-tors to Himos every year. The

revamped Himos Park serves as a venue for four great music festivals and several other large and smaller events. Thanks to its festivals, Himos has become a holiday centre that is truly open all year round.

“We enjoyed many moments of success when the expanded Himos Park was filled with cheerful people weekend after weekend. Events are an important busi-

ness area, and we are planning to invest more in them in the coming years,” says Tiina Mäntyharju, Managing Director of HimosHoliday.

The Voice Juhannus Himosfestival and Iskelmä Festival set new visitor records in 2013. The 15-year-old Midsummer Festival attracted 46,000 visitors, and the atmosphere of Iskelmä was enjoyed by 32,000 visitors. A newcomer, Jysäri, charmed a total of 8,000 people in its first year, taking its place among the range of

festivals. The 13th Pipefest hip hop festi-val was celebrated at Himos for the third time.

The growing popularity of the festivals has enabled the development of Himos Park into a versatile event park. Expan-sion will continue, so in the summer, visitors will see an area that has been further improved. Himos Park provides a superb setting for the summer events of companies and organisations as well as other group events.

Jämsä is home to several felt factories and outlets. In addition, the region is rich in artisans, sheep farms, art-

ists, various associations and exhibitions related to the traditional felt industry. The Jämsä Felt Summer will be held for the 16th time.

The best-known felt factory in the re-gion is Lahtiset, in the village of Partala, which manufactures knee-high felt boots that are famous all over the country. Be-sides the boots, the factory outlet of Lahti-set sells felt socks, slippers, hats, rugs and table-setting items. The selection also in-

cludes designer felt boots by Aki Choklat that boldly blend modernity with tradi-tion, and a collection of bags and back-packs designed by Jonas Hakaniemi. Read more at www.lahtiset.fi

At the Alho Felt Factory outlet, also in Partala, you can find bargains and en-joy a cup of coffee. The products are felt-ed from 100% sheep wool with sturdy craftsmanship and years of experience. The selection includes felt boots, hats, interior decoration products and raw material for crafts. Read more atwww.alhonhuopatehdas.fi

The Jämsä Felt Factory outlet in Pääsky-läntie is open in winter. In summertime, it is open upon request. You can buy handi-craft yarns, felting wool, felt boots, wool-len jumpers, shawls and many other things from the outlet.

Charmed by feltThe felt exhibition ”Creative Felt” is at gallery Kivipankki during July 2014. The colorful felt works come from Filtti mem-bers. The theme/the name of the exhibi-tion is abstractly free allowing feltmakers the possibility to treat the theme without prejudice, with good aesthetics and imag-ination using their own creativity for the felt work.

Traditional wall hangings are inherent knowhow to Finnish felt makers, but now-adays we can also see 3D felt.

The international part of the exhibition comes from Italy. The felt artists of the Italian felt association have adopted the same theme. Their felt works will be pre-sented in the stone building at the Joki-varsi school center.

Felt graffiti will be built again to the gar-den of gallery Kivipankki. Last summer the felt pieces tolerated the winds, sun shine and rain extremely well and they were a joy to watch.

The exhibition will be open at the Joki-varsi school center from 13 to 27 July 2014 and at Gallery Kivipankki from 30 June to 3 August 2014, both Sun–Fri 12 noon–6 pm, Sat 12 noon–5 pm.

“Many people think that felting requires special tools or large premises, but you can easily get started with just the material to be felted, hot water and soap, and some space on a table,” says Tiina Mäki, own-er of craft shop Mäen Huopaa ja Lankaa.

In her shop, Mäki sells a range of craft supplies, and organises felting courses upon request. Mäki, who has a further vo-cational qualification in felting, has been felting for more than ten years. She ex-presses her creative side by making felt products for exhibitions. “At this very mo-ment, one of my works is travelling around the world,” Mäki says.

gReat mateRiaLMäki is interested in felting because of its diversity, in terms of techniques and end

products. “By felting, you can make eve-ryday textiles, art textiles and accessories. You can use various techniques and com-bine wool with different materials, such as silk fabric or thin linen. Wool can be made into anything: jewellery, boots, tapestries, hats, bags and whatnot,” Mäki says excit-edly.

As a material, felted wool is warm and fireproof when used in everyday textiles, for example. “Felt is soft, but it's also hard and durable”, Mäki describes. Felt is also suitable for charity purposes. “We have made felt hearts for retirement homes with the felt association. They are also good for the skin of the elderly. Clean, un-treated wool helps to keep the skin in good condition,” Mäki says.

“exPLoRe tHe Jämsä feLt Heaven”Jämsä offers felt in many forms to suit dif-ferent tastes, and you can also learn more about felt both as a material and as an end product. “Finland's only felt factories are found in Jämsä, and there are as many as four of them. We also have a concentration of felt-related culture, such as exhibitions,” Mäki says.

Felt is a distinctive local product that fas-cinates tourists and locals alike. “Foreign tourists are interested in felt particular-ly when it is used in Finnish handicrafts,” Mäki notes. Mäki encourages anyone in-terested in felting to give it a try, seek in-formation and ask for tips. “I recommend felting, it's wonderfully relaxing!”

Location is Jämsä's greatest asset. The cen-tral location in Southern Finland and ex-cellent transport connections create a firm foundation for tourism in Himos. The ski resort's popularity and the festivals that draw large crowds go to show that Jämsä is easy to reach.

HimosLeHteLäThe City of Jämsä offers holiday home plots for sale in Himoslehtelä, an area covered by a local detailed plan. Himoslehtelä is locat-ed in a peaceful area on the shore opposite the slopes of North Himos, yet close to the bustling holiday centre.

Himos – tHe fUtURe sUccess stoRy of JämsäTopical projects important for the strong development of Himos are the spa hotel and apartment hotel project and the Päijänran-ta project. A local detailed plan confirmed for West Himos and its surroundings will give a boost to this development. Summer activities, in particular, will be enhanced by the full-length golf course completed in June 2013, with its holiday home area.

If the letter of intent for the spa hotel is approved, the hotel may be finished in late 2015. Päijänranta will be constructed in the eastern part of the Himos Holiday Centre, on the shore of Lake Päijänne. The planned harbour village will be the heart of this densely populated area, providing services for boaters, including jetties, and a restaurant, for example. The area will also offer a beach, golf course and various trails.
