By Tresa EricksonYour daughter just announced she is get-

ting married, and already the wedding plan-ning is starting. You're just the father of the

bride, so there's not much for you to do,right? Perhaps, perhaps not. There could beplenty for you to do depending upon thoseinvolved in the planning.

Whether your daughter and her fianceare doing much of the planning themselvesor sharing responsibilities with their families, you will probably have some duties to per-form. One of the first may be meeting the in-laws. This is important for opening the chan-nels of communication and determining whowill be responsible for what, physically aswell as financially. Play your cards right, andyou can settle many of the details at this firstmeeting.

In that past, fathers of the bride took onmuch of the financial burden, but today, thatis no longer the case. The bride and groommay pay for the wedding or share costs withtheir parents. Depending upon the state ofyour finances, you might be able to pay formuch of the expenses, if not all, or part ofthe expenses. Make sure you have a figurein mind. That way, should it not be enough, the bride and groom will have plenty of timeto work out the financing. They might decideto pay for a portion of the costs and look tothe groom's parents to pay the rest.

Should the bride and groom insist onfooting the entire bill, you might want toassist financially in other ways. Perhaps youcould pay for the honeymoon or provide asmall down payment for a house. Discussionis key. Talk it over with everyone involved, in

particular the bride and groothe best course of action.

In addition to the finanalso be asked to take on ot

ties, such as checking out recthe bride and groom or walkter down the aisle. Do whateyou within reason and takdiplomatic approach whenNever lose sight of the fact ding it is and do your bestwishes of the bride and groothe father walks the bride dYour daughter, however, mthing else in mind. She mighfather to do it or both you ado it. Honor her wishes whabe.

Thisort checklist will help guide you to the mostportant elements to monitor and maintain in

When the time changes, its time to checkthe batteries in your smoke detectors. Makingsure they are still operational is quick andeasy and will bring peace of mind for anothersix months. Similarly, every year, you shouldcheck your fire extinguishers to ensure thatthey have the proper pressure. Look for dentsand dings, and make sure the pin is in the cor-rect position. Fall is a great time to do this, asyoull be spending more time indoors. If thepressure has fallen too low, find a profession-

summer, and soot can build up over the courseof a year. Other debris like birds nests or evenleaves can create unsafe blockages. Haveyour chimney inspected by a professional ifyou plan to use it through the winter.

By Tresa EricksonWhen a large home improvement project

oms, like adding a deck or updating yourchen or bathroom, it can be overwhelming.

s you write out the supply list, you may findourself thinking of all the other things youould rather be doing. If you aren't careful, ose thoughts can take over and the projectoved to the back burner. To avoid this sce-ario, it may be helpful to look at the project a series of stages.

Say you're updating your kitchen. If younk about everything you have to do frome sanding to the painting to the lighting, youe sure to get overwhelmed and put thebosh on the whole thing. If, however, you

take the time to sit down and stage out theprocess, you are more likely to proceed with it.So, sit down and make a list of all the tasksthat need to be done. Do you plan to change

out the lighting? Write that down. Do you planto paint the walls and cabinets? Write thatdown. Do you plan to replace the trim? Writethat down. Do you plan to add a backsplash?Write that down. Do you plan to change outthe countertops? Write that down. Keep goinguntil you have every task listed.

Now, take that list and determine whattasks should occur first. Painting, for example, should probably come before the new trim, lighting, backsplash and countertops. Thatway, you won't have to worry about spillingpaint on any of the new items. Once every-thing is painted, you might want to tackle thetrim-your walls and cabinets will then be com-plete. Next up should be the countertops.Once they're in, you can install the backsplashand the under-the-cabinet lighting.

Still feeling overwhelmed? Not to worry.Get out your calendar and schedule each ofthe tasks, giving yourself plenty of time to com-plete each. Don't try to paint everything all in

one day. It won't happen. Give yourself aweekend to prep and paint the walls and anextra long weekend to tackle the cabinets.Work on one section of the cabinets at time.Do the lower cabinet bases one day, theupper cabinet bases the next and the cabinetdoors the day after that. Wrap everything upon the final day with the installation of thedoors and new hardware and whatevertouchups may be needed.

Once you have the tasks scheduled, youcan start gathering the supplies and preparingfor the work ahead. It is important that youhave everything you need to complete eachtask. Multiple trips to the store will slowprogress considerably. It is also important thatyou commit to the schedule and do your bestto stick to it. Veer off too many times or try to

do too much at once, and youback on track again. You donthe next five years of your life wkitchen, or worse, stop work

end up with a half-finished kitcMotivation, of course, is hwalls getting painted and newup is not enough to keep youhesitate to try something elfriends over to ooh and ah have completed and cheer yostages, or treat yourself to a for each task you complete. needed to stay motivated. Address home projects in several stages

ning on using space heaters, humidifiers or de-humidifiers, they are a great addition to yourchecklist. Clean them off and inspect the heat-ing and electrical elements for safety, particu-larly if they have been out of sight in storage

for the warmer months. Finally, check the caulking around your

home. Caulk is a cheap compound that any-one can apply, and it will reduce the amountof energy loss from your home and preventwater damage to flooring, walls and windowsin the kitchen and bathroom.
