By Tresa EricksonWhen a large home improvement project

looms, like adding a deck or updating yourkitchen or bathroom, it can be overwhelming. As you write out the supply list, you may findyourself thinking of all the other things youwould rather be doing. If you aren't careful, those thoughts can take over and the project

moved to the back burner. To avoid this sce-nario, it may be helpful to look at the project asa series of stages.

Say you're updating your kitchen. If youthink about everything you have to do from thesanding to the painting to the lighting, you aresure to get overwhelmed and put the kibosh onthe whole thing. If, however, you take the time tosit down and stage out the process, you are

more likely to proceed with it. So, sit down andmake a list of all the tasks that need to be done.Do you plan to change out the lighting? Writethat down. Do you plan to paint the walls and

cabinets? Write that down. Do you plan toreplace the trim? Write that down. Do you planto add a backsplash? Write that down. Do youplan to change out the countertops? Write thatdown. Keep going until you have every task list-ed.

Now, take that list and determine what tasksshould occur first. Painting, for example, shouldprobably come before the new trim, lighting,

backsplash and countertops. That way, youwon't have to worry about spilling paint on anyof the new items. Once everything is painted,

Hostad said that representatives fromWashington County Jobs Now has held a fewmeetings and met with administrators from thelargest public school districts in WashingtonCounty. All the superintendents at the meetingasked if they could continue to be part of theinitiative.

"We welcome the insight that they can pro-vide. We think it will provide a great benefit toour work going forward," Hostad said.

Hostad added the perception of manufac-turing careers "is not the most positive one.Manufacturing has been through some upsand downs in the past 20 years. Many peoplegot frustrated when manufacturing jobs leftand went somewhere else in the world. I cantell you many of those are coming back to theUS."

He added that manufacturing haschanged from "big black smokestacks."

"One of the things we want to help teach-ers, staff, parents and young people to under-stand is that choosing a career in manufactur-ing doesn't commit a person to standing

behind a machine for the next 30 to 35 years,or on an assembly line. There are all sorts of

professions you can enter into once you getinto a different business," Hostad said.Hostad added that members of

Washington County Jobs Now would want toopen up their factories to educators and stu-dents.

you might want to tackle the trim-your walls andcabinets will then be complete. Next up shouldbe the countertops. Once they're in, you caninstall the backsplash and the under-the-cabinetlighting.

Still feeling overwhelmed? Not to worry.

Get out your calendar and schedule each ofthe tasks, giving yourself plenty of time to com-plete each. Don't try to paint everything all inone day. It won't happen. Give yourself a week-end to prep and paint the walls and an extralong weekend to tackle the cabinets. Work onone section of the cabinets at time. Do the lowercabinet bases one day, the upper cabinet basesthe next and the cabinet doors the day afterthat. Wrap everything up on the final day withthe installation of the doors and new hardwareand whatever touchups may be needed.

Once you have the tasks scheduled, youcan start gathering the supplies and preparing

for the work ahead. It is important that you haveeverything you need to complete each task.Multiple trips to the store will slow progress con-siderably. It is also important that you commit tothe schedule and do your best to stick to it. Veeroff too many times or try to do too much atonce, and you may never get back on trackagain. You don't want to spend the next fiveyears of your life working on your kitchen, orworse, stop work altogether and end up with ahalf-finished kitchen.

Motivation, of course, is half the battle. If

...Changes in manufacturing

walls getting painted and new lighting going upis not enough to keep you on track, don't hesi-tate to try something else. Have some friendsover to ooh and ah over what you have com-pleted and cheer you on to the next stages, or

treat yourself to a movie or dinner for each taskyou complete. Do whatever is needed to staymotivated. The more progress you make, themore disciplined you will become and the clos-er you will get to the kitchen you envisioned.

Attacking large home improvement projectsin stages can make quick work of them. Give ita shot. You just might get the project done andbe free for other pursuits.

The United Way of Washington Countykicked off its annual campaign Sept. 17 with61,048 meals for local food pantries.

Over 525 volunteers participated in help-ing to package meals in less than two hours atthe campaign kick-off event at Washington

County Fair Park. Joyce Garbaciak fromChannel 12 News emceed the event."The first goal we set for the campaign

was to mobilize 200-plus volunteers to helpwith a growing need in WashingtonCounty–hunger," stated Kristin Brandner,United Way Executive Director. "To havemore than double the number of volunteerswe originally planned to recruit has beeninspiring and speaks volumes to the caringresidents of our local community."

Volunteers as individuals and in teamstook on different roles to assemble and box

up the macaroni and cheese meal packageswhich were donated to six food pantries andtwo homeless shelters.

"Hunger is an issue affecting every sizecommunity today, both locally and national-ly," explained Kris O'Meara who is co-chair-ing the 2013 United Way Campaign with herhusband Dr. Mark O'Meara. "Last year dur-ing a peak month in November, 1,098 fami-

lies received food from the six food pantries inWashington County; over 400 new familiesutilized services from the Full Shelf FoodPantry in West Bend for the first time. That iswhy we decided to focus our campaign kick-off in a way that increased awareness abouthunger and provided a hands-on project socommunity members could immediately help."

The second goal set for the 2013 cam-paign is a monetary goal needed to fund theprograms and initiatives that addressWashington County communities' most criticalproblems. The 2013 goal announced was

$1,350,000, up 12.5% from the $1,200,000raised last year. With the growing demand for basic need

programs, United Way has set a vision toaddress the root cause of community prob-lems. A new initiative that will focus onemployment–jobs with family sustainingwages and work skill training–wasannounced. Over the next few months, United

Way will work with community members todefine strategies and community programsneeded to make lasting changes in this area.

"Mark and I support the mission of UnitedWay and its new mobilizing communities'impact model," said Kris O'Meara, campaignco-chair. "We are rolling up our sleeves to bepart of the solution and encouraging others tojoin us. We firmly believe that everyone playsa role in supporting our community."

The campaign will r un through Dec. 31. Tolearn more about the needs in WashingtonCounty or to make a donation online, go to

the United Way website at www.unitedway-ofwashingtoncounty.org.

Quality Matters: Which PlansProvide Highest-Quality Health Care?

(NewsUSA)–Choosing the right healthcare plan can have a big impact on yourquality of life, especially if you're a senioror otherwise Medicare eligible. With the5-star Special Enrollment Period under-way through November, now is the time toconsider whether your current plan pro-vides the high-quality care and value of a5-star Medicare health plan.

To help Medicare beneficiaries under-stand why quality matters and what it

means to their health, Kaiser Permanente, which has the most 5-star plans nationwidefor 2013, is sharing information about akey area to consider when evaluating aMedicare plan–preventive care.

"Medicare members should select aplan that is proactive in helping them stayhealthy and active as they age. They needto know if their plan does a good job pre-venting them from getting sick throughscreenings, vaccines and tests," said JedWeissberg, M.D., medical director, KaiserPermanente Medicare plans. "They alsoneed to know how well their plan manages

chronic conditions such as high bloodpressure, high cholesterol and diabetes."

Kaiser Permanente scores well abovethe national average in preventive screen-ings. For example, only one in six tradi-tional Medicare members–16percent–used a free preventive service in2011, according to the Centers forMedicare & Medicaid Services. By con-

trast, nearly 90 percent of eligible KaiserPermanente Medicare members receivedbreast cancer screenings, and nearly 88percent received colorectal cancer screen-ings, as reported by the 2012 HealthcareEffectiveness Data and Information Set,commonly known as HEDIS.

Ratings matter, because if CMS rates aMedicare health plan 5 out of 5 stars, ben-eficiaries can feel confident about choos-ing the highest-quality plan available and

join tha t plan almost any time of year.Learn more about the Medicare Star

Quality Ratings and Kaiser Permanente'sMedicare plans by visitingkp.org/medicare or by calling 1-855-817-5831. Plan performance summary star rat-ings are assessed by the Centers forMedicare & Medicaid Services each yearand may change from one year to the next.
