Financial aid workshopsat UW-WC
Current UW-Washington County students as well as prospec-tive students (high school seniors and non-traditional age stu-dents) are encouraged to apply now for financial aid and schol-arships. Scholarship applications for the 2015-16 academic yearat UW-Washington County (UW-WC) will be accepted untilFebruary 14, 2015. Scholarships recognize academic successand help provide financial support for students who have demon-strated academic excellence, leadership and community involve-ment.
Three UW-Washington County professors were cho-sen to receive an Arthur M. Kaplan Award for the2014/15 academic year. They include: Dr. MohamedAyoub (Chemistry), Dr. Margaret Hamilton, (Psychology)and Dr. Christopher Hays (Anthropology). Theannouncement was made by UW Colleges InterimChancellor, Aaron Brower.
For Dr. Ayoub, the honor was given for several con-tributions – including his leadership of UW-WC’s STEM(Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) Club forstudents; collaborative research with UW Madison chem-istry faculty resulting in a published paper; a chemistry
workshop; a grant aimed at increasing STEM graduatesin Wisconsin; and undergraduate research by CHE 299students, covering a variety of computational chemistrytopics and applications and their subsequent presenta-tions at the UW System Posters in the Rotunda and UWSSymposium for Undergraduate Research and CreativeActivity.
For Drs. Hamilton and Hays, the award recognizedthe time and energy that the pair dedicated to develop-ing a proposed learning community - focused on evolu-tion as the unifying theme. Through this learning commu-nity, students from all majors would be introduced to theinterdisciplinary use of the concept of evolution and itsapplication to nearly all aspects of their academic andpersonal lives.
The Arthur M. Kaplan Award program was estab-lished to recognize outstanding contributions made toeducation by UW Colleges faculty and academic staff. Itpays tribute to the positive spirit that Provost and Vice

Drs. Richard and Bruce Winter
Dear Dr. Winter, I need implants in my upper and lowerarches. I have had several consultations and opinions all overthe board! Some of the consults said I only needed 4 implantsfor the upper and 4 for the lower and others have said I need
just two for the lower. I did tell them I w anted to be a ble tohave teeth that didn’t come out and I don’t have a lot of bonein either arch. What are your thoughts? Thanks, Jack J.
Dear Jack, there are several good questions here. I will tryand break them down and I e ncourage you and the readers toread my articles on Upgradeable Dentistry and AdvancedTreatment Planning under “publications” at:www.hamptondentalassociates.com where I have writtenarticles about these very questions. I also outline in variouspublications the differences between removable overdenturesand fixed implant bridges and show examples of each type of implant treatment.
First of all, without a consultation and x-rays I cannotcomment on your specific situation. The number of implantsyou require is dependent upon the quality and quantity of your remaining bone, your budget and the type of prosthesisyou require. Whether the implant restoration should be“fixed” or non-removable by the patient or whether it isacceptable to remove the implant supported denture and takeit out at night is a personal decision and both have advantagesand disadvantages. Most people that lose their teeth want“fixed” teeth. In addition, the patient’s health, medication(s)and anatomy all play a role in deciding upon the ideal implantrestoration. It is important to note that sometimes we can start
with a removable implant denture due to budgetaryconstraints and add implants over a year or two and Upgradeto a fixed restoration or bridge when finances allow!
Next, we can discuss the number of required implants. Inthe upper arch most people have already been wearing adenture or partial and they have already undergone bone loss.As bone is lost in the upper jaw the sinuses expand and inorder to place implants in this area there is a need to “growthe bone” by doing a sinus grafting procedure and possibly ablock grafting procedure. This sinus augmentation is aprocedure that will allow implants of normal length to beplaced in the posterior upper jaw. A way to bypass this is azygomatic or long implant that is used in an “all-on-four”procedure. This procedure will place 4 implants at angles thatare used to support a full arch of denture teeth or a “hybrid”prosthesis. This may be a predictable procedure but replacing14 teeth (24 roots) with 4 implants doesn’t provide as large amargin of safety as using 7-9 implants per arch. This is amatter of philosophy and the treating implant dentist andsurgeon will be able to explain their philosophy based upon
their education, skill and judgment. As far as the two-implant option given to you for your
lower arch, this is strictly to support a lower overdenture, which is removable. In order to have a fixed restoration(non-removable) you would require a minimum of 6maxillary and 5 mandibular implants in my practice. Thatbeing said if you are able to place more implants and over-engineer the situation you are always better off, as theseextra implants will redistribute chewing forces over 6-9implants, instead of just four.
We offer complimentary implant consultations orcomprehensive examination and x-ray visits to our readers. Please call us at 414-464-9021 to schedule your visit! Welook forward to meeting you. You may see examples of ourdentistry at ww w.winterdental.com
We would like to also c ongratulate Dr.Rick on his ABOIaward that he received last weekend at the AAID AmericanAcademy of Implant Dentistry Meeting in O rlando.
