The Washington County Treasurer’s Office has collected approximately 78 percent of the 2013 postponed delinquent taxes that the department received notice of in February from local municipalities, Treasurer Jane C. Merten told the Washington County Board Aug. 12. During a report to the board on the office’s activities, Merten added that the estimate doesn’t include the city of West Bend, which will be settled in August. Merten said tax collections for 2013 versus 2012 “were about the same, there wasn’t much difference.” According to Merten, as of July 31 the total unpaid taxes were $7.9 million. Of that amount, $5.9 million is for 2013 taxes and $2 million is for prior years. Later during her presentation Merten noted that in July 125 taxpayers paid their taxes by credit card or electronic check. She added that the taxpayer pays all service fees associated with electronic payment. Accepting credit card and e-check payments for real estate taxes is listed as one of the accomplishments in 2013 in Merten’s written report to the board. According to the report, in 2013 revenue interest from investments came in at $186,111 while revenue interest earned from delinquent taxes came in at $1,294,944. Among the goals for this year listed in the report are to “continually monitor county investments to earn a fair rate of return,” “make preservation of principal the top priority when selecting investments of county funds,” producing 2014 tax bills and tax rolls with 100 percent accuracy and continuing to examine methods available to preserve the county’s tax roll records. By Tresa EricksonLighting is one of the most important fea-

tures of a home, indoors and out. It providesillumination for tasks inside and keeps bur-glars away outside. When chosen well, light-ing can also enhance a home’s beauty. Hereare some tips the next time you change or addto your outdoor lighting.

Outdoor lighting comes in many types.Post lights are mounted on a post, which is usu-ally located near the driveway. Wall lights aremounted on walls near exterior doors—oneach side of the garage door, for example.Ceiling mount lights are mounted on the ceil-ing of a porch or portico to illuminate the front

entrance. Hanging lights serve the same pur-pose as ceiling mount lights but make more ofa statement in grand entrances and tallporches.

Make a list of the outdoor lights you needand the amount you have to spend, and thenget ready to shop. Outdoor lights come in avariety of styles. Look for a style that comple-ments the style of your home. While lanternsmight work well for a beach house, they maynot suit your contemporary home. You mightneed a sleeker, cleaner style.

Finish is another aspect to consider.Again, look to your house as a guide. If youhave a lot of brass, brass fixtures are the way

to go. If you have a lot of ironwork, look forblack fixtures. If you have a lot of chrome, look for chrome fixtures.

Scale is vital. Too small or too large oflights can detract from the beauty of yourhome. Look for appropriate sized lights. If youare looking for wall lights for a two-storyhome, for example, you should focus on lightsthat are 18 to 24 inches tall. Pay attention tothe elements in the area where the lights will

go. While you might adore hanging lights, having one in your small portico might notwork. You don’t want guests hitting their headon the light every time they enter or exit yourhome.

Want to make your home really glow?Update the outdoor lighting. Determine yourneeds and look for the right style, finish andscale to create a safe, secure, beautiful home.

Safe, secure and beautiful
