The old saying, “you have to spend money in orderto make money”, is a fundamental theory in growinga successful business. Naturally, it depends whatyou are spending money on. Yachts, planes andsports cars really don’t add any value to the typicalbusiness unless, of course, you are running acharter service for the rich and the famous. It isimperative that the proper time be spent to analyzethe return on investment and decide if it makesbusiness sense or not.

On a recent business trip to London, I had theopportunity to spend a morning seeing some of thesights before heading back to the airport. It amazedme how much there is to see in a relatively smallgeographic area.The amount of history representedby monuments, parks, cathedrals, castles, museums,historic architecture and, of course, all of the tradi-tional royal family related activities was incredible!My four hours there did not even scratch thesurface. The time-honored daily activities of theRoyal Guards at all of the Palaces, the marchingbands, impressive Royal Horses marching down theroad in formation to one of the many spectacularand historic stables, beautiful landscaping and somuch more, makes one wonder how much moneythis all costs.

It bothered me to think that the citizens ofEngland had to sponsor this activity throughtax dollars. Although having these greattraditions is very noble, is it fiscally respon-sible, especially in these tough economictimes?

I did some research on Google and learnedthat, in fact, the English government has agreat thing going.They spend approximate-ly 40 million pounds per year to keep upthese traditions and, in turn, the Treasurybrings in about 176 million pounds fromtourism! This does not include restaurants,hotels, cabs and stores. So, there is a huge

return on investment. Now what can the UnitedStates do to match that and reduce our taxes?

Here at Duro Dyne, we are always looking for moreefficient ways to produce our products. The samereturn on investment (ROI) analysis holds truewhen buying a machine that has greater output andthen, in turn, reduces the cost to produce an item.We would like to see investment to be paid offfrom its savings anywhere from one to three yearsafter purchase.

We are currently investigating new equipment thatwill provide us with a quick ROI. It is these numbersthat clearly make the decision “a no-brainer.”

during any nationwide heat wave, move from airconditioned homes to air conditioned cars to airconditioned work spaces and back again, it isgood to pause and be thankful for air conditioning,an engineering achievement that was named bythe American Society of Mechanical Engineers asone of the top inventions of the 20th Century.

While some in recent years have tried to makethe case that air conditioning is an unnecessaryluxury, a 2012 study by researchers at theMassachusetts Institute of Technology found thatthere were 80 percent fewer heat-related deathsin the United States between 1960 and 2004 thanthere were between 1900 and 1959 – a drop theydirectly attributed to the rise in the use of airconditioning. Air conditioning saves lives.

“On a hot day like today, you would be hard-pressed to find a person in America who wouldnot be thankful for air conditioning,” said StephenYurek, President & CEO of the Air Conditioning,Heating, and Refrigeration Institute, the industry’strade association. “But even as we are grateful forthe comfort air conditioning provides, we shouldremember that it is also very much a life-savingtechnology,” he said.

Summer Activities forAdultsEveryday we see wonderful summer activityideas for children, but what about ideas foradults? Finding fun summer activities for adultsseems to be almost impossible. You can have your friends bring overtheir favorite movies and order pizza. Or, youcould also spend the weekend watching all ofyour favorite movies and enjoying all yourfavorite snacks. If you have a large collection ofmovies, you can choose from a variety of different themes. You could choose to enjoymovies that have the same actor or youcould also choose your favorite genre.
