You’re responsible for your- self,” she said. “Our health as a planet depends on the ocean.” The NWMC hosts a vari- ety of summer programs, with options for both kids and adults. Spragg said kids age 11-15 can enjoy an overnight cruise on a 26-foot sailboat while learn- ing both boating and marine science. She said a sailing instruc- tor and a science instruc- tor will be aboard, which benefits the science educa- tion sides of things because it allows students to access portions of the marine envi- ronment they simply couldn’t from shore. “We’ve been trying to come up with ways to get the marine science on the water. Several other overnight programs are planned throughout the summer, including a late July cruise to Mystery Bay for ages 11-15, July 20-21, $225. Youth age 12 and up can step aboard the schooner Martha for extended sail- training trips to various regattas and events, starting on June 6. They can enjoy environmental activities, kayaking and hiking while learning how to raise sails and hoist the anchor. Trips can last three to seven days, with one 13-day trip planned to the Gulf Islands and Desolation Sound in early September. Costs range from $600 to $2,000 for the extended trip. Spragg said the NWMC encourages kids to partici- pate in the Messing About in Boats and Learn to Sail programs. She said many members of the high school sailing teams got their start in the programs and volun- teer as instructors in the summer. “All of the teams started in the youth Learn to Sail program. It’s quite a sailing legacy – we’re very proud of it,” she said. Learn to Sail starts June 24, with three-hour classes for five consecutive days. officially forming in 2005.“In late July or early

August, we will have an introductory session for Junior Rowers, ages 12-plus,” Delma wrote in an email. “The mission of the Rat Island Rowing and Sculling Club is to provide opportuni-ty to youth and adults in the greater Port Townsend com-munity to learn and improve sweep and scull rowing skills through recreational and competitive rowing pro-grams, and to preserve and celebrate the legacy of tradi-tional wooden racing shells.”

Adult progrAmsFor adults hoping to mas-

ter sailing and other marine activities, Spragg said plenty of options are available.

Weekly adult Learn to Sail programs kick off June 14. The three-hour classes are held every Friday until Aug. 30, cost $60, and pro-vide an introduction to the basics of sailing.

For those interested in more advanced sailing edu-cation, or getting their keel-boat certification, weekend classes are available for $300 and $400.

“Once they learn to sail, they can join the Thunderbird Club,” Spragg said.

For $125 a month, club members can access one of two NWMC boats and take them out when they’re not being used for classes.

“It’s an answer to the question ‘I’ve learned to sail, now what?’” Spragg said. “We’re really just trying to get people out on the water. We live in a beautiful spot. Port Townsend looks great from the water.”

To encourage locals and tourists to see the city from out on the bay, Spragg said

the NWMC is continuing a tour program in which a 30-foot motorboat is taken past the downtown Port Townsend waterfront.

She said the short cruises are piloted by volunteers, and the fee is a suggested donation only. It’s a good opportunity to see the city and learn some of its history, she added.

“We just cruise town and see Port Townsend from the water and tell a little bit of the history,” she said. “We had over 400 people do it last year. That’s over 400 people that wouldn’t have gotten on the water otherwise.”

Spragg said the tour is great for families with small children. It ran July to

August last year and should start when the weather warms up this year.

Spragg said the programs at the NWMC offer children and adults a sense of inde-pendence by giving them the tools to master boating on their own terms.

“It’s a wonderful, great way to have an appreciation for our natural environment. We are all connected to the water,” Spragg said. “It’s a very empowering thing to kids to get themselves from one place to another in a boat.”

To register for NWMC pro-grams or to learn more, visit nwmaritime.org/programs or call 385-3628, ext. 104.

Horse Partners, a program developed by the Jefferson Equestrian Association (JEA) in partnership with Camp Beausite Northwest, is offering classes this summer for children with disabilities and others who would benefit from therapeutic riding.

Mary Craft Nepute, who is certified as a Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship (PATH) inter-national instructor, offers the classes at no cost to riders.

Classes take place at Heron Pond Farm, 152 Douglas Way, Port Townsend, on six Tuesday afternoons, beginning on June 25. Each class can accommodate as many as four riders.

A number of children from Jumping Mouse Children’s Center have filled up a class for at-risk youths, there are openings for children 6-18 with disabilities.

Horse Partners also is looking for volunteers to assist riders in tacking and mounting, as well as side walking, if the rider needs

assistance. Volunteers are trained,

and classes are conducted according to therapeutic rid-ing principles established by PATH.

Horse Partners’ focus is to try to enhance the ability of each rider, with the goal of having children become inde-pendent riders.

JEA members hope to build an arena and wheel-chair-accessible facilities at the horse park, so that they can expand and continue this program.

For information on how to volunteer or sign up for a les-son, contact Linda Mattos at 385-5837 or 301-5723.

Yoga For the Right Now MomentYoga is an ancient art that helps the practitioner,

or yogi, move into a more realized and often healthier relationship with their current individual body. Life is a gift we didn’t create. A miracle happening to us right now, even when the right now is in transition or uncomfortable. Through the practice of yoga the awareness that we are not only one local body but also the speci c expression of the totality in body develops and grows until it sees itself as the pre-existing truth of who we really are.

At Tenderpaws Nöle and Gary teach what we call Lila Yoga. This is “the Yoga of Divine Play where the opposites hold hands, hold each other inside of one heart.”

Both Nöle and Gary teach a gentle but deep form of yoga combining breath work, movement or asana, meditation and sound as well as o erings that come from their personal practice. Nöle is a level 3 certi ed i-Rest teacher. She specializes in Yoga Nidra for emotional as well as physical life challenges. Gary continues his work with illness and injury recovery begun at the Hospital. Lila Yoga is safe for all levels all bodies and all ages.

AquAtic tHerApyMany physicians and

therapists recommend aquatic therapy because it can provide benefits not pos-sible with other treatments and advance individuals to a higher level of muscle fit-ness and mobility sooner, Matkins said.

Water exercise and ther-apy offer advantages over land-based exercise and therapy. Buoyancy provided by the water allows class participants to move more easily with decreased stress on muscles, joints and bones while increasing flexibility and balance, according to Matkins. The resistance of the water allows for higher workout intensities with less impact on the body.

The “support” received from the water makes exer-cising easier and less pain-ful, allowing exercise ses-sions to last longer without increased effort or joint or muscle pain, she said.

YMCA is offering several classes in partnership with the pool, including Deep H2O aerobics class, a weightless, no-impact workout using flo-tation belts, for all levels, designed for cardio, strength

The Balance and Movement class, on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 to 10 a.m., is tailored for those rehabilitating from injury, or those new to water exercise who want an easy, low-impact class. Pre/postnatal Water Aerobics is designed for pre-natal or postnatal women who want a safe and effective way to stay in shape. A doc-tor’s release note is required prior to participation in this class, which focuses on increasing or maintain-ing strength and flexibility while enjoying the relaxing nature of the water. This class takes place 10-11 a.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays,

Aqua Zumba instructor Nancy Speser brings a Latin flair to this popular water exercise program, which is on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 8 to 9 a.m.

These classes are offered on a drop-in basis. Cost of pool entry is included in the class fee. Punch cards are

available through the YMCA office at Mountain View Commons, 1925 Blaine St., Suite 108.
