Director’s MessageLet’s Play Ball! Professional baseball is arriving this summer and everyone at Hillsboro Parks & Recreation is excited to officially welcome the Hillsboro Hops to our community. Team owners Mike and Laura McMurray and General Manager K. L. Wombacher have been great partners to work with and are now residents of Hillsboro. It has been an amazing 12 months. A year ago we began considering building a new multi-purpose ballpark and bringing professional baseball to Hillsboro. Talks with the Northwest League began, agreements were reached, a construction contract was awarded, and on September 21, 2012 ground was broken. Throughout the design and construction process there has been an excellent collaboration between our contractor, Hoffman Construction, our architect, SRG Partners, and Hillsboro Parks & Recreation and Hillsboro Facilities and Fleet Department to deliver a first class ballpark within a very tight time frame. Mark your calendar and join us for the Grand Opening Celebration on Thursday, June 13 from 5:30 pm to 8:00 pm. The event is free and all are welcome. The opening of Hillsboro Ballpark is just one of the many opportunities Hillsboro Parks & Recreation offers for you to play, learn and grow right here in your own back yard. With 24 diverse parks, multiple recreation facilities and hundreds of classes, summer camps and volunteer opportunities, we have something for everyone. I hope you enjoy perusing our Activities Guide and that you’ll visit a park, take a class or attend a Hillsboro Hops game this summer.

For 32 years Hillsboro Community Arts, a local non-profit group, has produced “Showtime at Shute,” a free summer outdoor concert series in Shute Park. The series has become a tradition for Hillsboro families and friends, spreading their blanket or placing their chairs in the same

spot year after year. After three decades of dedicated service, the volunteers of HCA have entrusted Showtime at Shute to Hillsboro Parks & Recreation (HPR) to carry on this long-established summer tradition. HP&R has aided in the production of this series throughout much of its history. HCA passes the torch, knowing its legacy will live on and be honored.Showtime returns for its 33rd year at Shute Park, 750 SE 8th Avenue, on Thursday evenings beginning July 11 at 6:30 pm. The band Stone in Love: Tribute to Journey will open the series. For a complete list of concerts, see the back cover of this Activities Guide.

The Jazz Scene as an Ecologywith Darrell Grant

June 18 7:00 pm

For decades, Portland has been home to a vibrant musical community with more than its share of creative artists But what makes a healthy jazz scene? What are the necessary ingredients?  Can we come up with the answers by considering what makes a healthy ecology? While we necessarily focus on the basics of our survival—food, clean air and water, livable land—how do we value the culture that gives our lives meaning?  In the ongoing dialogue about sustainable environment, sustainable development, sustainable economic growth, where might something like music fit in? Join composer, musician and PSU professor Darrell Grant in exploring what is both timeless and also rapidly changing about the way we value, sustain and experience music in our daily lives and society at large

High Fiber Diet: ELEMENTSMay 7 – June 25

Main Gallery

High Fiber Diet is an interest group within the larger Columbia FiberArts Guild   Formed in the 1980’s, HFD members focused on the creation of original fiber art and its professional exhibition   Today in 2013, that same focus continues   The textiles on display range from mighty vistas to intensely abstract visions   A wide variety of surface embellishment is used, from painting, beading, stamping to stenciling and the hand dyeing of fabrics   The Elements show focuses on textile art that draws on the tradition of quilting, while using it as a contemporary springboard High Fiber Diet artists have envisioned both philosophical and physical images for Elements: Air, Earth, Fire, Water

Walnut Street Park, opened in 1992, is a 2.5-acre park located at 10th and Walnut Streets just southeast of downtown Hillsboro. Remodeled in the fall of 2012, the park boasts new features such as a new playground and a splashpad which is turned on in the warm summer months for children and adults alike to enjoy. Large deciduous trees line most of the park, and trees in the middle obscure the northern section, making that area of the park with its open fields and picnic area a bit of a hidden treasure. The park features .22 miles of paved walking paths, a basketball court, a picnic shelter and table and a large grassy sports field area. Walnut Street Park is surrounded by on-street parking.
