Mirriam’s House is safe againTEARS of sorrow have been turned intotears of joy at Mirriam’s Safe House inMbekweni, Paarl.

Last year the community in Mbekweniwas devastated when their Safe House wasdestroyed in a horrific fire that also claimedthe life of a toddler, but last month Mirriam’sHousewasable to open thedoors to theirnewbuilding thanks to thegenerosityofmanydo-nors.

For the past 15 years Mirriam Toni, a sing-le Xhosa woman, has unselfishly taken ituponherself to lookafterorphanedandaban-doned children in her community providingfood, shelter, clothing as well as schooling tothem. However, her dreams were shatteredwhen the shack in which they were livingburntdownandtookthelifeofoneof thetodd-lers.

AdTConstruction selflessly sponsored theconstruction of a new fouse for Mirriam andher children. For many of the children it willbe the first time that they will experience li-ving in their own brick building with run-ning water, showers and a solid roof overtheir heads.

The house also has an open plan kitchen,living room area, two bathrooms, four roomsat ground level, one each for the boys, girls,babiesandMirriam.The loftwill alsobeused

for the children to sleep in.Christo Schreuder, Administrator from

The Grape Community, said, “It was ourdream to build a structure that would enableeach child to have an own bed, a room inwhich to study and a sheltered playgroundfor the younger children. We are incrediblygrateful to all the donors who have made thisdream a reality – there are about 95 sponsorswho have made contributions!”

Denise Green, Corporate Social Invest-ment Manager at Peninsula Beverages Com-pany (PenBev), distributor of the Coca-ColaCompanyproducts,andadonororganisationtowards therebuildingofMirriamHouse,ad-ded, “We are encouraged by the incrediblework being done by Mirriam and are verypleased to know that the new Mirriam Housewill indeed be a safe haven for Mirriam andthe children. We thank the Newlands RotaryClub forbringing thisproject toourattentionand letting us play a part in this wonderfulinitiative.”

This is the beginning of a new chapter forMirriam’sSafeHouse. Formore informationabout the Mirriam House, visit www.thegra-pecommunity.org.za/our-involvement/mir-riam-house or contact Christo Schreuder ofthe Grape Community on [email protected].

Jy moet jouself en jou kind teen hom beskerm. Indien hynie wil hoor nie, gaan sien die sosiale-misdaad polisiebeampteby jou polisiekantoor. Jy kan ’n interdik bekom teen die manas hy jou steeds pla.

Milk – the sports drink with meaningful benefitsMOST parents, teachers and sports coaches know theimportanceofprovidingactive teenswithproperhydra-tion during and after exercise.

But what many don’t know is that instead of using com-mercial sports drinks to rehydrate young athletes, there’sanattractivealternativewithmeaningfulbenefits that’spro-ven to be an effective post-exercise recovery drink – milk,especially low-fat milk or low-fat flavoured milk.

Often overlooked in favour of commercial rehydrationdrinks, milk contains carbohydrates and electrolytes withina natural food matrix. Milk also has an added benefit in thatit contains protein too.

But why are proteins and carbohydrates so important?Many athletes include resistance exercise in their trainingschedules – repeated high-intensity contractions of differentmusclegroups tobuild leanbodymass.Suchintenseexerciseneedstobesupportedbyacombinedproteinandcarbohydra-te intake just before or shortly after exercise to stimulateprotein synthesis and muscle growth.

According toMarethaVermaak,dietitianof theConsumerEducationProjectofMilkSA,anumberof recentlypublishedstudies have established the positive impact of milk on mus-cle gain.

“Dairy protein is a complete protein, comprising 80% ca-sein and 20% whey protein. Whey protein contains a largeproportion of branched-chain amino acids, which play an in-tegral role inmusclemetabolismandproteinsynthesis.Rese-arch increasingly suggests that consumptionofwheyproteinin particular may:

) stimulategreatermuscleproteinsynthesis thansoypro-tein intake;

) result in greater muscle gain when combined with chro-nic resistance training;

) and enhance recovery after exercise, especially in youn-ger individuals,” she explains.

The issue of recovery – including rehydration – is particu-larly important. Research has shown that dehydration im-pairs performance and has negative health implications, es-pecially in the case of regular and repeated exercise activi-ties. Research also confirmed that electrolytes play afundamental role in the rehydration process.

“Exercise-induced dehydration, where sweat loss surpas-ses fluid intake, is commonamongathletes, particularlywithprolonged, intense exercise. Low-fat milk has a naturallyhigh concentration of electrolytes that can replace those lost

through sweat during exercise,” Vermaak says.In fact, low-fat milk products came through strongly in

the studies as the dairy drink with the potential to have themost positive impact on muscle growth and rehydrationwhen consumed correctly as a post-exercise recovery drink.For example, 300 ml of low-fat drinking yoghurt provides mo-re than three times the estimated carbohydrate contributionof full-cream, low-fat and fat-free milk during the post-exerci-se recovery period. Low-fat flavoured milk was not far be-hind,atalmostdouble thecarbohydratecontributionof thesethree dairy sources. This compares favourably with popularsports drinks, with milk also being a source of much-neededprotein.

“It’s clear from all this research that low-fat dairy drinksprovide carbohydrates tohelp thebodyrefuel; protein tohelpreduce muscle breakdown and stimulate growth; and fluidand electrolytes to aid in rehydration. Plus that low-fat drin-king yoghurt and flavoured milk contribute significantly tothe recovery of macro-nutrients in strength training athletesif included in the post-exercise meal,” Vermaak adds further.

It’srecommendedthatteenathletesconsumefourservingsof dairy per day as part of a healthy, balanced diet that alsoincludes five daily servings of vegetables and fruit. Athletesinvolved in strength training should aim to consume onegram of carbohydrates per kilogram of body weight and 0,4gproteinperkilogrambodyweightduring the first twohoursafter training.
