Help save our environmentIn the light of World EnvironmentDay thisweek, conservingourenvi-ronment isnot just the responsibili-ty of grown-ups.“As the next generation it is up

tous, tomake sure thatwe take careof the earth and its resources,” saysenvironmentalist, Harry the Homi-nid.“Averygoodway to lend theenvi-

ronment a hand is to recycle theglass we use to be converted intonewglass products. Thatway, ener-gy, water and other non-renewablenatural resources are saved.”For example, the energy saving

from recycling one glass bottle willpower a 100 watt light bulb for al-most an hour, a washing machinefor 10 minutes, a TV for 20 minutesand a computer for 25 minutes.”Only 140 000 tons or 20% of all

glass containers produced in SouthAfrica every year, are retrieved forrecycling.“When glass is not recycled and

is landfilled instead, it stays thereforever. Managing the huge

amountsof solidwaste thatcurrent-ly have to be landfilled is creatinga major landfill problem and con-tributes to the overall problem ofpollution. But you can help by sup-porting the glass recycling drive!”says Harry. All glass is 100% recyclable even

if they are broken. The only itemsthat cannot be recycled includeglass cups and plates, laboratoryglass, drinking glasses, mirrors, windshields and window glass,heat-resistant ovenware and lightbulbs.“As the youth let’s all recycle

glass and do our bit for the environ-ment.Spread the message to your

friends and family - and one daywhen you are older, why not tellyour kids too,” he smiles.

You the Entrepreneur:Unique selling propositionDAVID MALHERBE

Whenyouhaveabusinessyou’llal-ways have many competitors whowill offer basically the same prod-ucts or services you do. So whatmakesyourbusiness, yourproductorserviceunique, so thatcustomers will rathervisit your business thanyour competitors’? Sucha unique feature isknown as a Unique Sell-ing Proposition (USP).

AUSP is a statement thatsuccinctly outlines howyour business, product orservice is different fromthat of your competition. Itidentifieswhatmakesyourbusiness the better choice, and whyyour target clients should choose youover the competition. In other words, when determining

a focus for USP, we need to considerhow easy it will be for your competi-tors to replicate. Most of us react tothis challenge by believing that if wecan just be the cheapest, the custom-ers will flock to our businesses. Butunfortunately price is one of the easi-

est things for competitorsto compete with and it isnot easy to build a strongbusiness when you contin-ually try to sell cheaperthan all the rest. Therefore, your USP

should ideally focus onsomething that others inyour industry cannot easi-lyreproduce. It is crucial tofind ways to differentiateand distinguish your busi-ness from your competi-

tors, emphasising the positive differ-ences between you and others in themarketplace. Each business should highlight its

strengths, conveying a message thatwill instill confidence and comfort intheir customers. If you cannot differentiate your

company based on what you sell, tryto capitalise on how you sell or sup-port your products or services. TheUSP can be evident in all aspects ofa business. Most often USP’s are con-veyed through a slogan, a companymotto, or a brand. The USP should place emphasis on

the single aspect that is most impor-tant to prospective customers and dis-tinguishes your company above allothers. Is it location? Is it quality ofmaterials? Is it superior level of serv-ice?Focus on what you identified as

most important to potential custom-ers.Ask yourself, does my offer reflect

thatwhich ismost important to them?Remember, highly desirable productscannot be given away.

Patients will nowget speedy serviceWestern Cape Minster of Health,Theuns Botha, this week demon-strated theprovince’s ITdatabasewith records for over 80% of pa-tients in theWestern Cape, whichwill reduce patients’waiting timeat healthcare facilities.

Prior to 2004, none of the primaryhealthcare facilities were computer-ised, leaving a heavy burden on clin-ics with doctors seeing up to 100 pa-tients a day. Atsome facilitiesmore than 1 000patients and reg-istries were cha-otic with up tofour filing sys-tems per site.

In the past, theprovince’s Pri-mary HealthCare Informa-tion System (PH-CIS) was devel-oped with an ob-stetrics system(CRADLE) thathad been devel-oped in-house formaternity units.

Botha says:“For patients, the PHCIS offersan improvedpathway of carein line with ourHealthcare2030strategy.Thesystemwill offer patients respect and digni-ty because the system recognisesthem. They will have individual ap-pointments, which will allow themto plan their own time better. In thelong term patients will have shorterwaiting times.”Being themostwide-ly used patient-base system in SouthAfrica and on the continent, it hasalready been implemented at 176 fa-

cilities and the current phase of theproject is expected to be extended toanother 22 facilities, next year.

It isenvisagedthatby2015allWest-ernCapeGovernmentclinicswillop-erate with this system.

By the end of 2016, satellite healthfacilities will be integrated into PH-CIS bymeans of a “huband spoke ap-proach”.

The working environment for cli-nicianswillbeable todeliverabetter

quality of care, having better in-formation abouttheir patients.

PHCIS wasbuilt “by the peo-ple, for the peo-ple”, and the de-velopment teamhad a close rela-tionship with theuser community, reducing the “de-sign reality gap”,making the sys-tem closelyadapted tounique require-ments and workprocesses.

Future growthof the systemwillinclude an ap-pointment sys-tem at all clinics, chronic disease

management, electronic reporting,an interface with Home Affairs andwaiting time surveys.

These developments have also al-lowed the Primary Health Care Sys-tem win the 2012 International ITNetworking Award, the 2010 AfricaICT achievers award for best ICTProject in Africa and in 2008 the Pre-mier’s Silver Award for Service Ex-cellence.
