The Sound Awake

Gungorw/K.S. RhoadsRobert Wesleyan College | Oct. 30 Hailing from Denver CO, Gun-gor (a.k.a. Michael Gungor) is a multi-instrumentalist, arranger and producer. He comes to town as part of the “I Am Mountain” tour, supporting his new album of the same name. His wife, Lisa, shares the vocalizations on this new release, described by critic Mike McHargue as an “unresolved record of utter joy, jubilation, hope and doubt.”... Singer/song-writer K.S. Rhoads joins the tour. Rhoads has appeared on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, The Late Show with David Letterman and The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson; and he’s performed with Chris Isaak, Jeff Beck, James Mor-rison and Ray Lamontagne among others. His new CD is called The Wilderness.

In The MoodAuditorium Theatre | Oct. 30 In the Mood recreates the 1940’s Big Band/Swing Dance era with sizzling choreography, sassy costumes, and over forty songs performed live on stage – “Chat-tanooga Choo Choo,” “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy,” “In The Mood,” “Tuxedo Junction,” “Sing, Sing, Sing” and others. Now in its 20th season of touring the U.S., Canada, England, Australia and New Zealand, the show celebrates the music of Glenn Miller, Tommy Dorsey, Artie Shaw, Benny Good-man, The Andrews Sisters, Frank Sinatra and others.

Ringling Bros and Barnum & Bailey Circus

Blue Cross Arena | Oct. 30 - Nov. 3 Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus honors ‘The Year of The Dragon’ in its latest circus edi-tion that combines mystic dragon lore with authentic circus feats. Ringmaster Jonathan Lee Iverson presides over this one, offering a never-before-seen blend of spiritual and real life legends. You’ll see the Shaolin Kung Fu Warriors, the Globe of Steel, charging Cossack riders, Asian elephants, tigers and more.

Hey MavisAbilene Bar & Lounge | Oct. 31 Based in Akron OH, Hey Mavis plays edgy, soulful Americana. Their lyrics focus on the beautiful imagery of life – on children, love and heartbreak. Featured in the band are Eddie Caner on fiddle & viola, Laurie Michelle Caner on banjo and vocals, Brent Kirby on guitar & vocals, and Bryan Thomas on bass. Their music has been dubbed “Appalachian Americana.”

Devin Shelton & Emery Bug Jar | Oct. 31 Emery, now once again per-forming with David Shelton, is a post-hardcore group from South Carolina who tour in support of an upcoming release, You Were Never Alone... Sky SandsComedy Club | Oct. 31 - Nov. 2 Rochester native, Sky Sands is known as no average stand-up comedian. In a revue of his show at Comedy Stop in the Tropicana Hotel at Las Vega, it was said of him, “Sky’s not ‘off the wall,’ he doesn’t even know a wall exists!” Sky has been performing across America and Canada, not to men-tion various European countries; and has won 3 Telly awards for his work in television commercials.

Ice Nine Kills / Langhorne Slim & The LawMain St. Armory | Nov. 1 @ 5:30 p.m. - With epic cho-ruses, jazz-like interludes, and an unmatched sense for brutality, Ice Nine Kills has found success with such albums as The Burning, Last Chance to Make Amends, Safe Is Just A Shadow and their latest, The Predator Becomes The Play. This hardcore metal band from Boston,

Electric blues singer, songwriter and harmonica

Spampinato Bros.Abilene Bar & Lounge | Nov. 8 The Spampinato Brothers, Joey (bass/vocals) and Johnny (gui-tar/vocals), are former members of NRBQ. During their time with that group, they had the honor of being the first band to appear on The Simpsons in both live and animated form! Now they lead a rocking new band with a popular CD, Pie in the Sky, to their credit; and a new one on the way.

Otto & GeorgeJoke Factory | Nov. 8 & 9 Otto & George have been fix-tures in comedy clubs for nearly three decades, known as one of the most outrageous acts in the business. The language in their act isn’t blue, it’s closer to jet black as ventriloquist Otto Peterson puts dirty wooden puppet George Dud-ley through his paces in an over-the-top, overkill, shock element presentation. Warning: This show is not for the pale, squeamish, easily offended - or even uneasily offended; and is rated XXX.

J D Wilkes & the Dirt DaubersAbilene Bar & Lounge | Nov. 9 JD Wilkes & the Dirt Daubers are Colonel Wilkes (songwriter/front man for the Legendary Shack Shakers), his wife Jessica, fellow Shack Shaker Rod Hamdallah, and Preston Corn. Vance GilbertGreece Baptist Church | Nov. 9 Vance Gilbert burst onto the singer/songwriter scene in the 1990’s after an early career as a featured jazz vocalist. He soon

released three albums for the Rounder/Philo label - Edgewise (1994), Fugitives (1995), and the celebrated Shaking Off Gravity (1998). These discs were followed by the self-released Somerville Live (2000), and One Thru Fourteen (2002). Next came a duo album with Ellis Paul entitled Side Of the Road (2003), which was nomi-nated for a Boston Music Award, followed by Unfamiliar Moon; Angels, Castles, Covers; Up On Rockfield; and Old White Men.

Dennis Stroughmatt & Creole StompHarmony House | Nov. 9 Dennis Stroughmatt & Creole Stomp carry the torch of music and culture from a long tradition of Mississippi River Valley Creole. Blending that with the Cajun and Creole music of South West Louisiana, they’ve crafted their own unique sound. Stroughmatt studied with master fiddlers Roy Boyer and Charlie Pashia, and has performed with the likes of Sheryl Cormier and Cajun Sounds as well as Dexter Ardoin and the Creole Ramblers. In performance, fans are easily drawn to the dance floor and are left screaming for more. Their new CD, released this past May, is Pipeliner’s Blues.

Giordano Dance ChicagoSUNY Geneseo | Nov. 9 Started in 1963, Giordano Dance Chicago has - for over 50 years - brought the excitement of American jazz dance to audience around the world. Winners of the Chicago Dance Award, the com-pany was featured on the cover of Dance in March of this year. The magazine is quoted as saying that the company is a “burst of pure dance joy that leaves audiences breathless and ready for more.”

Nikki HillAbilene Bar & Lounge | Nov. 10 Vocalist Nikki Hill has earned a reputation as a fireball, the kind of performer that when you catch her act you find yourself asking, “Why haven’t I heard about her before?” The blues queen from Durham NC began her singing career at church before heading to Chapel Hill where she was introduced to a variety of styles; eventually settling into rhythm ‘n blues/roots rock when she joined forces with her guitar-playing husband, Matt.

Cherie CurrieLovin’ Cup | Nov. 10 Cherie Currie, formerly of The Runaways (“Cherry Bomb,” “Queens of Noise,” “California Paradise”), enjoyed great success with that group back in the late ’70s. Her story as the lead singer of the first all female rock/punk

band (with Joan Jett and Lita Ford) was told in a film starring Dakota Fanning as Cherie. Recently, she’s been recording with Matt Sorum of Velvet Revolver and Guns & Roses.

Six Feet Underw/Jungle Rot, Pyrexia, Malignancy & ArkaikMontage Music Hall | Nov. 12 The death metal act, Six Feet Under, has been around for a de-cade and has released ten albums in that time. Currently featuring Chris Barnes, Steve Swanson, Marco Pitruzzella and Jeff Hughell, they tour in support of a new CD, Unborn - the follow-up to last year’s Undead... Wisconsin-based death metallers, Jungle Rot, signed with Victory Records in 2009, releas-ing Kill on Command in ’11. That album was followed this year by Terror Regime... New York’s death

metal act, Pyrexia, tours in sup-port of a new one, Feast of Iniq-uity, on Unique Leader Records... Formed in 1992 in Yonkers NY, Malignancy will perform death metal from their latest album, Eugenics along with music from earlier releases including Inhu-man Grotesqueries...Albums from the extreme metal band, Arkaik include Metamorphignition, Re-flections Within Dissonance, and Existential Chaos.

Gringo StarBug Jar | Nov. 12 The indie rock group, Gringo Star, hails from Atlanta GA and is comprised of Nicholas and Peter Furgiuele and Christopher Kauf-man. Albums include All Y’All and Count Yer Lucky Stars; and they’re currently on tour in support of a new one, Floating Out To See.

Liz LongleyAblilene Bar & Lounge | Nov. 12 Singer/songwriter Liz Longley, trained at Berklee College of Mu-sic, now works out of Nashville. Her songs are full of emotion and delivered with an honesty that fans and critics love. John Mayer has said of her sound, “Gorgeous... just gorgeous.”

John Nemeth Dinosaur BBQ | Nov. 13 John Nemeth is a singer steeped in tradition and reminiscent of B.B. King, Ray Charles and Junior Parker; as well as a harmonica player of riveting intensity and virtuosity. His decade-long career has found him opening for Robert Cray, Keb Mo’ and Earl Thomas, and performing at major music festivals around the U.S., Europe, Canada and Asia, bringing him critical acclaim. His uncanny blend of retro-modern blues and soul music delights purists and young hipsters alike, as displayed on his many releases including Magic Touch which won a Blues Music Award nomination for “Best New Artist;” and his latest CDs - Soul Live and Blues Live.

The Sound AwakeAbilene Bar & Lounge | Nov. 13 The Sound Awake, a rock act out of Ithaca, features brothers Nick and Mike Bullock, Dana Bill-ings and Bruce Hyde. The band describes itself as a band that’s “out to prove that guitars and great songs are still the joyful engine of music.” Their debut EP is titled The Study of Clouds.
