in clubs and theaters across the country, she has been able to “get away with saying anything.” Lisa possesses a bawdy personality, all-out honesty, and the most es-sential quality in an insult comic - undeniable likeability. Dance The Blood Countess Rochester City Ballet joins with the Grammy-Award winning Ying Quartet and pianist Elinor Freer to present The Blood Countess from February 3 thru 5 in the Nazareth College Arts Center, 4245 East

Avenue. The full-length, original ballet, choreographed and created by RCB’s Artistic Director Jamey Leverett, garnered critical acclaim and commercial success at its debut last May. The ground-breaking produc-tion is inspired by the historical story of the late 16th century Hungarian Countess, Elizabeth Bathory. It is estimated that she killed more than 600 virginal women and bathed in her victims’ blood in a quest for eternal youth. Leverett’s unique narrative also includes an encounter between the Countess and a young Dracula that will leave audiences wonder-ing who is predator and who is prey. Call (585) 389-2170.

with live accompaniment by the Ying Quartet, February 3-5 at Nazareth College Arts Center.

THE GREYWritten by Joe Carnahan and Ian Mackenzie Jeffers; directed by Joe CarnahanOpen Road Films Rated R

By Ed Symkus

Unlike that old axiom about not judging a book by its cover, all too often a big Hollywood ac-tion thriller can easily be judged by its poster, or by its trailer. But it pleases me to report that’s not the case here. Yes, this is another survivor movie; yes, this is about vicious animals attacking and killing off, one-by-one, a small group of humans; yes, it’s about that group trying to fight back. But The Grey has a lot more going for it than men against the elements and men against nature. Based on the story Ghost Walkers by Ian Mackenzie Jeffers, and co-written by Jeffers and the film’s director Joe Carnahan (Narc, Pride and Glory), it compares and contrasts similarities and differ-ences between two species: men and wolves. It opens with an introduction to the terribly sad, obviously emotionally weary Ottway (Liam Neeson), a man who’s come to Alaska to escape a life that he wants no part of any more. All we know is that he has an immense knowledge of wolves, his new job is to shoot any of them that try to attack a crew of oil riggers out in the field, and that the beautiful woman we see with him in a few tender flashbacks, in his words, “left me.” Choosing not to take part in the chatty camaraderie of the riggers, Ottway is silently wallowing in his misery when the small plane they’re in goes down in a horrific crash in the midst of the snow-covered wilderness, leaving just him and a handful and a half of men alive. After a quick bit of Ottway showing a compassionate side, quietly talking one man through his final living minutes, he takes charge, telling the shell-shocked others that they must make a fire, find some food among the wreck-age, then start walking. Ottway is

the Alpha Male among the men. But in short order, they see a large wolf calmly chowing down on a dead passenger and, after chasing it off, are visited that night by a pack of them. We don’t know how many, but we can see one big head, some very sharp teeth, and lots of glowing eyes. That big head belongs to the Alpha Wolf. From that moment, the film follows the moves of both groups, and the decisions of both Alphas, each of whom must deal with problems in their ranks, each of whom must hold things together as a leader. But there are other ways that this isn’t your typical horror or monster film. The wolf attacks that follow aren’t about finding food; they’re about territory. The humans are accidental trespass-ers, interlopers, who have landed in the wrong place. The wolves believe them to be invaders, and will do what they need to do to keep order in their lives. Dialogue is minimal. The wolves make unworldly sounds, while the men fall to bickering. Yet among the tense, creepy, scary scenes, complete with a few bloody gotchas (that never veer into gross-out gory territory), there’s a bit of campfire discus-sion about death and survival, along with pieces of back stories and even a little humor. The film’s second half brings in some more danger and acts of derring-do among the men. Numbers shrink on both sides. Some of the guys go peacefully, others are torn asunder. They even eat a wolf, without the benefit of having a copy of M.F.K. Fisher’s great book How to Cook a Wolf. There’s also a quite moving final act that subtly reveals what drove Ottway to this life change. This is just not the kind of thing you generally find in a wild ani-mal versus man survival thriller.

Opening January 27

Albert NobbsFor reasons that are eventu-

ally explained, a woman (Glenn Close) in Ireland in the 1800s secretly poses as and passes for a man to earn a living as a hotel waiter. When new people come into her life – a confused maid (Mia Wasikowska), a nasty handy-man (Aaron Johnson), a secretive painter (Janet McTeer) – things change rapidly. Hopes keep going up and down, and while some will find the film depressing, others will find it uplifting.

A Dangerous MethodDavid Cronenberg directs a

straightforward drama that looks into the once friendly but later broken relationship between Sig-mund Freud (Viggo Mortensen) and Carl Jung (Michael Fass-bender) and their discussions of what would become the study of psychoanalysis. The whole thing is rather dull, and is not helped by the overly hysterical performance by Keira Knightley playing an emotionally out-of-control pa-tient.

The GreyWhat appears to be one of

those standard horror films about “monster” animals hunting down stranded humans (in this case it’s wolves going after survivors of a plane crash in the Alaskan wilder-ness) turns, slowly and subtly, into a meditation on mankind intruding into nature. Yes, it’s violent and has really scary mo-ments, but it gets kinda hard to figure out who are the bad guys. Terrifically acted, very tense, and an interesting, well-written study of the lead character, played by Liam Neeson.

Man on a LedgeThe man way up there is a

former cop who’s now on the op-posite side of the law (Sam Wor-thington) and is ready to end it all. But is he guilty of a big diamond heist or was he set up by a really crooked guy (Ed Harris)? That’s the question the police psycholo-gist (Elizabeth Banks) is dealing with as she tries to talk him down. But hold on, who’s that other guy (Jamie Bell) he’s in contact with over at that other tall building? Lots of stories going on at once.

One for the MoneyDown-on-her-luck Katherine

Heigl lands a job at her cousin’s

bail bond business, where she’s given a gun and told to go out and bring in a bad cop who’s on the run. It’s a comedy, so the cop turns out to be someone she once had an affair with, and refuses to accept her as his captor. Lots of shooting and explosions and pretty bad one-liners.

Opening February 3

Big Miracle When a family of gray whales becomes trapped under the ice near the Arctic Circle, a Green-peace volunteer (Drew Barrymore) and her friends, and seemingly every member of a small town get together to start chopping holes and making a safe passage to the ocean. Wow, I’m yawning just writing about this.

Chronicle Oh, lordy, another “found foot-age” movie in which all kinds of bad things have happened, then a filmed record of it is discovered. This one has a promising premise – three high school pals make a discovery that leads to them gain-ing super powers, but they abuse their gifts, then everything goes wrong.

The Woman in Black Taking place around the start of the 20th century, this tells of a lawyer who goes to a remote village to tidy up all the legal paperwork of an estate, but must deal with a ghost who’s been ter-rorizing everyone. It’s a remake of a 1989 TV movie based on the 1983 Susan Hill novel. Interesting note: The lawyer is played by Dan-

iel Radcliffe. In the original film, the lawyer was played by Adrian Rawlins, who played Harry Pot-ter’s father in a certain hit film series.
