Grammy nominee and a Jazz Hall of Fame member. He was respon-sible for writing many of Spyro’s popular hits like “Cafe Amore,” “Lovin’ You,” “It Doesn’t Matter” and others, performing with the group at Carnegie Hall, Radio City Music Hall and the Newport Jazz Festival. Since recovering from a severe health scare, Chet continues to thrive, recording with Russel Thomkins (of The Stylistics) and violinist Lionel Young.

By Ed Symkus I’m not a fan of musicals, mainly because I like getting wrapped up in the mood of a film, and when someone suddenly breaks out into song, that mood, for me, is broken. But I enjoyed this musical. Some of the James Lapine-Stephen Sondheim songs are quite witty and do a great job of moving the story along (though some of them are repetitive), and most of them go with the flow of the action, rather than bursting out unexpectedly. I also liked the way the film-makers have taken something so familiar – in this case a few well known fairy tales from the Grimm Brothers – sort of joined them together, and in doing so changed them around, giving us

new perspectives on the stories. Characters from one will bump into characters from another, even though each has their own separate tale be-ing played out. On top of that, there’s a whole new story, with two original char-acters who unify the whole thing. They are a bak-er and his wife (James Corden and Emily Blunt) who have had a curse of infertility placed upon them by a wicked witch (Meryl Streep) be-cause something has been stolen from her. They d idn ’ t do the stealing but she’s chosen them to find what’s hers and in return will bless them with a child.

beerCRAFT

Hmmm, that’s a strange set-up for something that Disney is releasing as a family film on Christmas Day. But for the first half of this tune-filled extrava-ganza, almost everything (aside from that curse) is actually quite pleasing. Beginning with the spo-ken phrase “Once upon a time ...” we’re treated to a long song, sung by different cast members in different stories, each of them going on about their personal hopes and dreams. Look, there’s Cinderella (Anna Kendrick) want-ing to attend the local three-day festival; there’s Red Riding Hood (Lilla Crawford) – you can’t miss her; she’s the chunky one in the red cape – off to visit her ailing granny; and there are happy young Jack (Daniel Huttlestone) and his loving but tough mom (Tracey Ullman) wondering how they’re going to get by on their failing farm. An offscreen narrator (James Corden again) introduces all of

these folks, while their actions and the witch’s de-mands begin to br ing them to-gether. The objects she wants from the baker and his wife include a white cow (Jack and his mom have one), a red cape (we’ve already met Red), a golden slipper (I could’ve sworn Cinderella’s shoe was made of glass, but liberties are being taken here), and some yellow hair – oh, my, I forgot the witch’s “daughter” Rapun-zel (Mackenzie Mauzy). Yes, the first half is happy and

hopeful, yet it has some of the scary stuff that the Grimms as well as Disney are known for. The Red Riding Hood story is downright frightening, especially with the appearance of the Wolf (a quick couple of cameos by Johnny Depp), who hungrily and maybe just a little lasciviously refers to Red as “Miss Plump.” Even before that, the witch’s initial entrance – she smashes down the door to the baker’s home – causes a major audience gasp. But that happiness and hope doesn’t remain. The desperation of the baker and his wife to have a child is quite apparent, and they’re willing to do anything to get what they need to give to the witch. Anything, to anyone. And that’s all in the first half, before every-thing manages to come to a happy ending ... right in the middle. At which point, the stories and mood and everyone’s actions take a very sharp, very dark turn. In a film just bursting with astounding and eye-popping makeup and production design that will make even the youngest audience members mouth a silent wow, that mood turn introduces themes of infidelity and death. And I’m not just talking about the demise of a menace like the wolf. This all goes deeper and closer to the heart. Letme closewith awarning:This is NOT a film for young kids. The trailers for it are very misleading. It features moments that are creepy and upsetting and, depending on the maturity or immaturity of some youngsters, potentially traumatizing. It’s an excellent film, beautifully made and well acted. But it’s geared toward adults. I would strongly suggest that if you’re thinking of bringing someone under the age of9or10toit,youshouldseeitfirst, then decide if it’s appropri-ate. Sorry to put a damper on this. Just doing my job.

Empire Strikes Backby Mark Tichenor

The craft beer revolution’s early days came with their share of turmoil. Everyone could see the potential, but it was still difficult to determine what the industry would look like. It was a period of crazy growth followed by instabil-ity. About a decade ago, Syracuse’s Empire Brewing Company boldly opened a stunning brewpub in Rochester’s High Falls district, across from the headquarters of Eastman Kodak. Market forces dictated a contraction, however, and the brewery retreated to focus on its main brewpub location in Armory Square, their beer being lost to Rochester consumers. During the following years, however, Empire maintained a passion for their beer and the vision that New York would be a great brewing state again. In addi-tion to shouldering the burden of growing his business, owner Dave Katleski also became president of the New York State Brewers’ Association, and in that capacity tirelessly lobbied the government of New York to ease antiquated regulations–some dating all the way back to prohibition. The Brewers’ Association was instrumental in crafting the New York State Farm Brewery act, which lowers barriers to en-try and taxes on breweries that primarily use New York State-sourced ingredients in their beer. This legislation enabled dozens of new breweries to move forward with their plans to open. Cur-rently, Empire is poised to take advantage of the new benefits; This March, they are breaking

ground on a new 22-acre farm brewery in Cazenovia, New York. In preparation for this, Empire beer is flowing through Rochester taps once more. “We’re starting off draft-only, with four different beers,” says Dem Jones, Empire’s Rochester-area representative. “In the last two weeks, we’ve wound up in 50 places in Rochester alone. It’s ex-ploding faster than we imagined, and we’re very thankful.” If the Empire IPA is any in-dication, the warm reception is deserved. It’s well thought-out, skillfully balanced, and unpreten-tious; a beer that nestles comfort-ably into the glass without need-ing to proclaim itself the hoppiest or most outrageous. In fact, it’s really rather bang-on to the textbook style guideline of an American IPA, which leads one to believe Empire is embrac-ing the philosophy that, in order to make great specialty beers, it’s necessary to make great everyday beers. It’s really rather difficult to restrain oneself from ordering a second glass. I know I failed. “I love it when I go to a place that has the Empire Cream Ale on,” Jones says. “That’s a bit of a challenge because it requires a nitro line to pour. It’s a true cream ale, sweet in a biscuity way, not a cloying way, and that’s usually the first beer I have when I walk into the brewpub in Syracuse.” Jones is hustling to regain Em-pire’s recognition in the market, running special events all over Rochester. He’ll even be running a tasting booth at the fourth annual Homegrown Festival this January at Lovin’ Cup. Empire’s staff remains small, and their growth plans still center on bringing their beer to Western New York and the Finger Lakes. As such, they truly represent our region, and should be a welcome addition to the Rochester Beer scene, and a pub near you, once again.
