John ValbyComedy Club | Nov. 26 The Doctor is in! John Valby, a.k.a. “Dr. Dirty” (a Rochester native) has an uncanny rapport with an audience...his ability to mix musical talent with a madcap variety of “Dirty Ditties” leaves ‘em crying for more. His reper-toire, composed of popular songs, limericks, classical arrangements and his own original creations, has forged for him a successful career out of poking fun at the audience, stretching the limits of free speech and good taste, and satirizing current events from be-hind his piano. When not playing or singing, Valby yells obscenities at the audience - who yell right back!

Fire Links & Mighty CrownPlatform 21 @ Main St. Armory | Nov. 27 Fire Links and Mighty Crown come to town as part of the “Money Pull Up Unfinished Busi-ness Tour.” The show promises to provide aficionados of sound systems a chance to enjoy the deep dub boxes and hardcore juggling of these two acts – with an impromptu war of words likely from both.

Colin Cannon QuartetSkylark Lounge | Nov. 28 Guitarist/composer Colin Cannon’s music has been de-scribed as a fusion of modern jazz laced with funk, rock and drum ‘n bass. A graduate of Berklee College of Music, Cannon has opened for such jazz legends as Ron Carter, Russel Malone, Brain Auger and Karrin Allyson.

Originally from Rochester and now based in New York City, he can be seen performing regularly at such legendary NYC venues as The Blue Note, 55 Bar, and CafÈ Vivaldi as well as The Shrine in Harlem, the LIC Bar and Rock-wood Music Hall. Cannon’s debut CD, In Summary, earned universal praise from reviewers including All About Jazz - “Cannon’s keen sense of harmony recalls on more than one occasion Pat Metheny” and Knocks From The Underground - “Cannon’s guitar wizardry will appeal even to listeners who fancy themselves more rock aficionados than jazz.” His latest is Glenville, which Ian Patterson of All About Jazz describes as “a strong follow-up with plenty to savor.” The Colin Cannon Quartet features Cannon on guitar along with

Manami Morita on piano, Zak Croxall on bass, and Devin Col-lins on drums.

Start Making Sensew/HmfOMontage Music Hall | Nov. 28 The Talking Heads tribute band, Start Making Sense, comes to town from their native Pennsyl-vania, recreating every stage of the band’s career; and bringing you a danceable celebration of the new-wave punk that you loved in the ‘80s...From the same folks comes another chapter in their book of rewrites, HmfO. With this act, they will recreate Hall and Oates, the #1 selling duo of all time – performing lots of early material and all the hits.

Jennifer Westwood & The Handsome DevilsAbilene Bar & Lounge | Nov. 28

w/G.S. HarperBop Shop Records | Nov. 28 Vocalist Jennifer Westwood cut her teeth on Detroit Gospel before hitting the gritty Detroit bars and joining with JD Mack, Dylan Dunbar, Ken Blaznek and Jack Schneider to form The Handsome Devils. Her bluesy Americana sound has earned her a Detroit Music Award and a Blue Water Music Award...Joining Westwood at the Bop Shop will be G.S, Harper whose Sixteen Winters CD was described by No Surf Music as being “the kind of album that those partial to coun-try or those who prefer rock will like, but those enamored of both are bound to love.”

Rob FalconeJoke Factory | Nov. 28 & 29 Rob Falcone is a “real charac-ter” and one of NYC’s favorite co-medians. He’s been seen on USA’s Up All Night and NBC’s America’s Talking as well as on Comedy Central. You may also recognize him from the film Spiderman 2 or from Orange Is The New Black, Blue Bloods, Gossip Girls, and The Sopranos on television.

Jamie LissowComedy Club | Nov. 28 & 29 Jamie Lissow is known for an intelligent brand of comedy that’s geared toward the college crowd, but is guaranteed to please every-one in the room. He’s appeared on The Tonight Show and was seen in a recurring roles as himself on Red Eye. Currently he is working on the Comedy Central produc-tion, Real Rob.

Internationally acclaimed Garth Fagan Dance presents premieres and revivals during its 44th home season at

THE THEORY OF EVERYTHING

By Ed Symkus

You know who Stephen Hawk-ing is. The guy in the wheelchair, head tilted to one side, a slight smile of his face, a robotic voice generated by a computer, author of books on physics that most folks don’t understand. But until the release of this film, based on the book Travelling to Infinity: My Life with Stephen, by his wife Jane

Hawking, we haven’t been privy to what makes him tick. James Marsh’s film helps a bit. As this is as much about Jane (Felicity Jones) as it’s about Ste-phen (Eddie Redmayne), and as much about their relationship as it’s about his complex theories, the film opens with them meet-ing. It was at Cambridge in 1963, where he referred to himself as a cosmologist who was looking for answers about the universe, and going for a PhD in physics. She was studying arts and poetry. When they first catch each other’s eye, they seem to be equally smit-ten. There are other differences. She’s very religious, and he’s a sci-entist. As he explains it, scientists “don’t believe in a supernatural creator.” But they’re so gosh-darn cute together, it’s easy to accept that this is going to be a story of opposites happily attracting. Tragedy, though, intercedes. Shortly after his mentor Professor Sciama (David Thewlis) brings Stephen to an old school lab where, he tells him, “Rutherford split the atom,” we first see a slight shake of Stephen’s hand, and then a small stumble of his foot. The filmmakers keep it subtle, but all the while the professor pushes him deeper into the mathematics of different theories, and he and

the concert will feature his music exactly as it was recorded with a number of local musicians joining forces to create the sound. (www.rnbclassicslive.com) •PerformingatBoulderCoffee,739 Park Avenue, on November 28 is the alt-classical singer/songwriter/guitarist, Matthew Cochran - who mixes folk music from his native Appalachia with classical conservatory training. His debut recording is Vapor Trail from a Paper Plane. (585-454-7140) •On November 26, the nightbefore Thanksgiving, Abilene Bar & Lounge at 153 Liberty Pole Way hosts The Return of The Hi-Risers! This is your chance to dance to the rock ‘n roll beat of Greg, Jason & Todd. (585-232-3230) •The Crawdiddies will per-form their new bluegrass music – a revamped sound that they’re eager to share – on Saturday, No-vember 29 at the Lock 32 Brewery in Schoen Place, Pittsford, from 7 to 10 p.m. (www.thecrawdiddies.com)

You can sign up for the Iron Smoke Whiskey’s Mustache Contingent; and plan to enjoy a night of music by the Tommy Brunett Band, Extended Family and MoChester. (www.facebook.com/events/1516800038566386) •On Saturday, December 6,Record Archive at 33 and 1/3 Rockwood Street, will host a ben-efit for the Alzheimer’s Disease Foundation. You’ll find food trucks on hand, live auctions, and music by Special Blend, Amanda Lee Peers and Krypton 88. (www.recordarchive.com)

Jane grow closer, and the camera keeps staring into his wide-eyed, wondering face, he’s slowly losing control of his body. A visit to a doctor reveals it to be something that’s causing gradual muscle delay. It’s ALS or Lou Gehrig’s Disease. The doc-tor calmly and with no emotion explains to Stephen that the aver-age life span after diagnosis is two years, then adds, with an air of hopeless defeat, “I’m so sorry.” From that point on, no matter where this story goes, and it goes in some unexpected directions, the film belongs to Eddie Red-mayne. It’s an Oscar nomination-worthy performance that’s amaz-ing to watch but sometimes hard to take. The film gives us a great actor (check out My Week with Marilyn) who’s faced with the challenge of portraying a man who was terribly challenged, both physically and emotionally. Red-mayne presents a Hawking who had to walk with two canes till he was confined to a wheelchair, who lost his real voice to a trache-otomy, who married the love of his life and became a father, and who kept on digging away at his work – earning his doctorate, proving a complex theory, realizing years later that he got it wrong, then setting out to disprove it. But remember, there’s Jane’s

story to deal with. Felicity Jones (The Invisible Woman) has a smaller role in the film, but her acting is no less bravura. Because Stephen was totally dependent on others, but stubbornly tried for a “normal” life, Jane took on the task, giving up any chances of her own career, of realizing her own dreams. She’s a woman who needs help, like Stephen, both physically and emotionally, and finally admits it to him. That help comes in the form of Jonathan Hellyer Jones (Charlie Cox), a church choir-master who becomes a de facto member of the family, and whose presence leads to the beginning of the film’s partial shift to melodra-ma. The shift continues with the introduction of a new assistant for Stephen, Elaine (Maxine Peake). There are some flat moments, and there are some clichés, and there’s a dash of humor (Fans of Dr. Who will enjoy a scene in which the practically immo-bile Hawking does a nice Dalek imitation by uttering the word “exterminate.”). But there’s also a great deal of inspiration in the story, and there’s no doubt that the filmmakers, as well as their subjects, truly believe in the line of dialogue, “Where there is life, there is hope.”

Record Store Day – Nov. 28: •The House of Guitars at 645 Titus Avenue celebrates with live bands performing all day – Carlton Knox Cole, Uncl’ Rog’, Nate Coffey, Shred 7, Gilly The Beatle, Balancing Beauty, Pseu-do Youth, and Delano Steele.
