Peter Frampton and The Doobie Brothersw/Matthew CurryCMAC | June 25 The multi-Grammy Award win-ning guitarist/multi-instrumen-talist/singer/songwriter, Peter Frampton, performed with the bands Humble Pie and The Herd as well as David Bowie and oth-ers. Hits include “Jumpin’ Jack Flash,” “Baby I Love Your Way,” “I’m in You,” “Show Me the Way,” “Signed, Sealed, Delivered I’m Yours” and “Do You Feel Like We Do.”... The Doobie Brothers first got together in California in 1970. Tommy Johnson’s soulful vocals provide their distinctive sound, and Pat Simmons is well-known for his finger-picking folk style. Among the band’s classic hits are “Listen to the Music,” “Jesus Is Just Alright,” “China Grove,” “Black Water,” “What a Fool Believes,” “Minute By Minute,” and “Takin’ to the Streets.” They have multiple platinum and gold albums to their credit as well as multiple Grammy Awards...Completing the bill is Matthew Curry, the guitarist/vo-calist whose music is gaining fans across the U.S., Europe, Canada and Australia. Hits include “If I Don’t Got You” and “Blinded by Darkness.”

Curtis SalgadoDinosaur BBQ | June 25 Described as “one of the bad-dest blues ‘n’ soul singers you’ve ever heard,” Curtis Salgado was the blueprint for John Belushi’s Blues Brothers’ character, Jake. For more than 20 years, Salgado has played gigs as a singer and harmonica player with numerous bands, most notably the Robert Cray Band, Roomful of Blues, Steve Miller and Santana. Curtis has been nominated for four Blues Foundation National Blues Awards.

Sean Patrick McGrawSticky Lips BBQ Juke Joint | June 25 Born in Fredonia, NY, Sean Patrick McGraw was a semi-finalist on season two of the USA Network’s Nashville Star and has gone on to, indeed, become a Nashville star. He’s performed with Toby Keith, Patty Loveless, Miranda Lambert, Trent Willmon and others; and his songs have been performed by top country artists - here in the U.S. and Canada. His music has been heard on the HBO series, True Blood and his band is the subject of a “docu-commercial,” Ten Days on Tour.

Scott H. Biramw/Austin LucasBug Jar | June 25 Scott H. Biram (“Dirty Old One Man Band”) mixes blues, hillbilly and country with punk

and metal as he sings, yodels, and growls his way through all-original tunes. His latest is Nothin’ But Blood... Alt-country crooner, Austin Lucas, touring in support of Stay Reckless, joins the bill. The New York Times says the album is “made of muscular and well-toned roots country.”

Lucinda Williamsw/Kenneth Brian BandParty in the Park | June 26 Lucinda Williams began her career some 30 years ago interpreting country, folk and blues standards. As a songwriter and performer, she has received Grammy Awards for “Passionate Kisses,” “Car Wheels On a Gravel Road,” and “Get Right With God.” Time Magazine named her “America’s Best Songwriter.” This past January, she re-released her self-titled album on its 25th anni-versary...From Decatur, IL comes the Kenneth Brian Band in sup-port of a new album, The Past, Present, and Future of Country Music. The Southern Rock outfit

features Brian on vocals and lead guitar, Travis Stephens on rhythm, Frank Rische on bass and Richard Pryor on drums.

Mary CutrufelloAbilene Bar & Lounge | June 26 Mary Cutrufello has been celebrated as a Texas honky-tonk heroine, a fiery Midwestern roots-rocker, and a powerhouse acoustic performer. Her 2012 EP, Fireflies Till They’re Gone, is a follow-up to 2010’s Acoustic EP. Other albums include Who to Love, 35, Songs from the 6 and When the Night is Through. The Yale grad describes herself as a “Fedex truck driver who plays music.”

Sink the ShipCalifornia Brew Haus | June 26 The hardcore metal act, Sink the Ship, hails from Mansfield OH. Their debut EP titled “Re-flections” was released this past February and has been earn-ing fans with its catchy guitar riffs, passionate lyrics and heavy drums.

Take it from one who has been to each and every festival sinceyear one, that the best thing todo is take it a step at a time, and appreciate the events you’re abletoattend.Don’tworryabout theonesyoumightnotgetto.Thevastmajorityofshowsarerich,valuableexperienceswithveryfewmisses,so you probably made a greatchoice.Checkfestivalcoverageinthisissue,orvisitFreetime.comforupdates. Here are two shows from open-ingnight2014. •Roy Hargrove in concert – Harro East Ballroom He’sstillinhismid40’sbuthe’sgotonefootinthetraditionaloldworldstyleofjazztrumpetersandonefootinthefuture.RoyHargroveandhisgroup-sax,piano,uprightbass and drums - was one of the firstactstoofficiallyopenthe2014edition of the festival and played to anearsell-outcrowdattheregal,acousticallyrichHarroEast. Dressedinanattysuitcompli-mentedbyalimegreenshirtandlimegreen lacesonhis sneakers(balancedbyhisdarkshadesandsevereMohawk),RoyHargrove isa small, wiry spirit and is still a “young lion,”yethisplayingalsointroduceshintsof the“oldcats”aswell.Playingbothflugelhornandacarbon-fibertrumpet,hissoundandtonecanbefriskyandcontem-poraryyetbalancedbyunderstatedandpensivetonesthroughout. Whetherhewasblastingawayatacreativesoloorthebandwasintuitively working with him toweavetogetheracohesive,collectivesound,RoyHargroveandhisgroupmeshednicely.Hedidn'ttalkmuch,exceptfortheonetimehesteppedforward and sang a songwhichadded a bit of variety to the set.
