M ayor Carl Beckmann has takenull responsibility or the recentproblems experienced by Folly Beach renters who were unable to obtainparking decals. I jumped the gun, hesaid, re erring to a letter that was sent toresidents indicating that only property owners would receive decals this year.

Te letter was written by Buddy Maupin, manager o City o Folly BeachParking Authority, but Beckmannsaid he did edit it be ore it went out.I knew what I was trying to say, hesaid, "but I guess it came out wrong."

According to Beckmann, his intention was to make sure that property ownersreceived the decals because they are theones who pay taxes. He said it would thenbe up to the owners o the property to givethe parking stickers to their tenants.

Beckmann said City Council had beentalking about how to manage the decalissue, which was getting out o hand,according to Beckmann. He said that heand the parking manager had looked atsome fgures and there were more stickersissued than there were residents on Folly Beach.

We had people with stickers who liveon James Island who were coming to the washout to sur , he said, adding that he

elt it was un air or Folly residents to haveto compete or parking spaces with people who dont live on the island.

Beckmann said he was not aware untilthe February 23 City Council meetingthat anyone had been denied a parkingpermit. He said renters have been gettingdecals and that those who couldnt getthem didnt check, didnt call about it.

Dear Editor,I am a member o the City o Folly

Beach Parks and Recreation Committee,but my comments and questions are my own as a voter and resident.

It has come to my attention thatthe mayor may have committed theapproximately $219,000 o Green Belt

unding awarded to the City o Folly Beach to a joint real estate transaction with the Charleston County Parksand Recreation Commission to build abeach park on E. Arctic Avenue at thecurrent location o Te Front Beach Inn.

I this is true, my issue is not with theproposed park the County wants to build.Tere are some bene ts. It would bring usa lovely park space, and more parking ortourists adjacent to the business district. Italso will involve the removal o buildings

that, even though they have been Folly mainstays or many years, have allen intodisrepair and are no longer habitable. I do

want to know how another County Park will bene t the residents o Folly Beach.Residents do not need more beach access,residents do not need parking places andresidents do not need beachside showers.

Also, in my opinion, residents do notneed to be paying ees to use any park onFolly Beach. Our city does need revenue,so I am eager to hear about the nancialbene t this potential transaction willbring us and what we would get in return

or such a commitment.It is con using to me that Folly Beachs

Greenbelt money might be used tosubsidize a County PRC project ratherthan using it to support the eforts o ourown Folly Beach Parks and Recreation

Committee to identi y potential natural park spaces which could makeuse o these unds. Givingaway our Greenbelt money undermines those eforts.

My questions are:Is this true? Has

our Greenbelt money been committed to thistransaction?

What is the justi cation or committingthese unds to a County parks projectverses a Folly Beach project?

What would be the nancial bene ts tothe city and residents?

Are all council members ully in ormedabout this transaction and in support o it?

Last uesday I read this statement at theCity Council meeting. Te Mayor re usedany public discussion and was reticent

to even admit he had such a discussion with CCPRC. I came away with thesequestions largely unanswered. Councilmembers appeared to be unin ormedabout this transaction and at least threehad not heard anything about it rom theMayor. Yes, the Council would have tovote to commit the Greenbelt unds toa County Park purchase, but how couldthey in good aith make such a decision

without knowing all the acts or any o theacts surrounding this purchase and what

Folly Beach would get in return.I think many residents like me are ed

up with the lack o communication withand within Council. It is my wish thatcurrent and uture Council members willtake heed and support a more open andtransparent orm o government. Lets useour votes to bring trust back to our City Council.

Te Mayor and the City o Folly Beachhave ailed to take advantage o the new Build America Bond program (BAB),

which authorizes any local governmentto issue taxable BABs in calendar years2009 and 2010 to nance any capitalexpenditures or which they otherwisecould issue tax-exempt governmentalbonds. Either unding option would beavailable to reduce the borrowing coststo expand City Hall, to replace aginggarbage trucks at lower cost, and to acquireclean-up equipment or the beach as wellas de erred re- ghting equipment.

Tere are two types o BABs: oneofers a tax credit and the other a directpayment to the issuer. Te rst is a axCredit Option whereby Bond proceedsmust be used to nance a governmentalpurpose or which tax-exempt bonds canbe issued. Dear Editor, A ter being denied a parking decal

because I do not own the property in which I reside, I did two things. First, Iresearched all o the 2009 City Councilmeeting minutes in order to nd evidenceo a vote on the issue; thus ar, Ive oundno record o a vote on the topic. Secondly,I discussed/questioned several residents(property owners) and unnamed localgovernment members about the new policy to see how it had been posited.Te local residents that I spoke withabout this were de nitely surprised withthe new in ormation concerning parkingdecals. Te Council members, on theother hand, were aware o the action, butreally didnt have too much to say aboutit. However, I will say that I was told thatthe Mayor had taken it upon himsel tomake this decision---nonetheless, this ishow bad rumors are started, especially inthe realm o government and I do notaccept this notion as truth without givingthe Mayor a air chance to respond.

According to the 2000 U.S. CensusBureau, there are approximately 2,116residents on Folly Beach. O those2,116 residents, 58.3 % are property owner occupied units while 41.7% arerenters. Te number o residents that arenon-property owners is a highly signi cantproportion o the total populace here onFolly Beach. Moreover, renters are a vitalcomponent o the local economy and itsestablishments that rely on all residents,

both property owners as well as rentersalike to keep their businesses runningduring the of-season.

Most municipalities do not pick andchoose which services to extend to residents

within their district based on whether ornot one rents or owns and Folly Beachshould be no diferent. Te re usal to issueresidential parking decals to some residentsin the local community simply becausethey rent sends out a negative message andalmost appears to categorize them as 2ndclass citizens whose opinions/ideas do notmatter. Many renters are also registeredvoters and this issue could likely serve asa catalyst, which brings more o them tothe polls and sparks a greater interest/involvement in civic engagement. On April 6, Folly Beach voters will choose three Council Members torepresent their interests for the next four years. Seven candidates want your vote and you will be bombarded daily withcampaign literature. Rather than add tothe rhetoric, I have sought to give you a feel for who the candidates are as individuals so you have a clearer perspective of why they say what they say. To avoid bias, the interviews are presented in the order in which they were conducted. Ladies and gentlemen, I present your candidates for City Council.

DJ Rich

Rich came to Folly Beach in 2003 andhasnt looked back. He was at Clemsonmajoring in business management, but

was eager to get some real work and li eexperience. His grandmother, FlorenceODonnell, had been a Folly xture oryears, operating the Sanitary Ca e onCenter Street back in the 1970s and Richspent much o his childhood here. Iknew it was where Id end up making my home, he said.

Rich was general manager at arestaurant, but like most olks in the

ood and beverage industry, he wanteda place o his own. In 2005, he and hisgrandmother took over Planet Follywoodon Center Street, where you can nd Richmost days i you want to talk politics,

which hes happy to do.Rich said he was becoming more and

more concerned as he watched a City Council so consumed with in- ghting

that it couldnt get any legislation passed.I was constantly having to watch whatthey were doing in order to protect my business, Rich said. It was time to eitherput up or shut up. So Rich threw his hatin the ring.

It did not seem to Rich that Councilmembers were prepared or meetings.A ter a while you ask yoursel , I Imdoing more homework than they are, why arent I on the Council? It just went romthere.

Hume was living in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, but elt the lure o the sea. Hehad been up and down the East Coast

rom Florida to Virginia looking or theright place to settle in. A ter one night ina house behind what was then the PurplePelican, Hume and his wi e leased anof-season beach house or six months.Tat was 13 years ago, Hume said, and

were still here. Its easy to get hooked onFolly.

Hume has served on the Planning &Zoning Commission or six years and hasthought about running or City Council

or some time. He said what pushed himover the edge was when Council wasdiscussing a smoking ban and one membersaid . . . theres precedence or individualsto give up their rights or the collectivegood.

Te answer to Follys problems is notus who live here giving up more o ourrights, he said. We already have morelaws than we probably need. Whether itsparking or garbage or noise, we have theordinances. En orce them!

Te anything goes attitude people

have about Folly could be changed usinga common-sense approach, accordingto Hume. ake litter, or instance, heexplained. He said it would not take long

Hume said not much can be done aboutthe 14,000 cars that squeeze their way onto Folly Island on a summer weekendshort o putting up a gate. We dont wantto live in a gated community, he said, so

we need to come up with a way to deal with the problem. One o his suggestions was to take two photos o violations one o the in raction and another o theofenders license plate so when he showsup in court he cant wiggle out o payinghis ne.

Hume said he would bring to the jobhis experience on the Planning & ZoningCommission, a pragmatic, common-sense

SuSan BReSlin

Breslin got to Folly Beach the way most olks do by accident. She came to

visit and kept coming back. In 1995, shebought a house on E Arctic. Although she worked or many years as a city planner inNew York City, Breslin pointed out thatshe was raised in a small town and eelsvery much at home in Folly.

Breslin said she is running or City Council because the priorities o the City are of-balance. Te needs and interestso the residents ought to come rst and artoo o ten are coming last," she said.

It troubles Breslin that Folly is losing itssense o community. She said 80% o thehouses on Folly are assessed at 6%, whichindicates they are either second homes orrentals. I would like to bring more good

neighbors to Folly Beach by marketing itas a place to ret ire or raise a amily.She would go a ter policies un air to

residents, such as parking permits only or property owners, requiring residents

to purchase garbage containers rom theCity, and charging excessive minimums

or water consumption. Folly Beach isull o small households that use only

one-third o the water they are chargedor and generate only a tiny amount o

garbage. She said it is not air to treatthem the same as vacation rentals thatmake completely diferent demands onCity services.

Festivals on Center Street have become

a way o li e on Folly and are sometimes

portrayed as necessary evils. Breslin would reshape them so they are less o aninconvenience to residents. She said these

estivals help only some o the downtownbusinesses and they do not keep taxes

rom going up. Center Street businessesdont pay accommodations taxes, shesaid, adding that it is A-tax money thatkeeps taxes down.

Another concern is lack o codeen orcement. She said it is distressing how many good rules are not enacted becausePlanning or Council members say Whatsthe point, it wont be en orced anyway.She would hire an En orcement O certo make Follys codes and regulationsmeaning ul.

Breslin said she would bring to the jobexperience as a city planner, two yearson the Folly Beach Planning & ZoningCommission, and a conviction that theneeds o residents are best served throughopen government. City Council doesnteven know whats going on sometimes. TeCity should be open about its business,she said. Te City belongs to us.

Clamp is a native South Carolinian who bought a home on E Ashley 15 yearsago and now lives on Oak Island. I

was retired and had a lot o time on my hands, Clamp said, so I started sittingin on Council meetings and saw thingsgoing on I didnt agree with. What

bothered Clamp most during his three-year observation period was the way hesaw Council throwing money around.His research showed an annual budgetthat had soared rom $2.2 million in 2005to $6.1 million in 2009. In the same t imeperiod, Clamp said the number o City employees increased rom 21 to 56.

Im not a Conservative or a Liberal,Clamp said. Im a realist. Clamp ranhis own business or 20 years and saidthe City should be run like a business.It should be efective and e cient andthere should be accountability. City Halldoesnt sell anything or produce anything.Tey have to rely on money coming rom

taxpayers in order to exist. You have to beprudent when you are spending someoneelses money. You have to spend it like it

Laura Beck Beck became a ull-time Folly Beach

resident in 2001, but has amily tiesgoing back three generations to great-grandparents who lived on E. Cooper.I have history here and understand thechanges the island has been through, shesaid.

Beck is the only incumbent City Councilmember in the race. She won a Councilseat in 2006 a ter serving our years onthe Planning & Zoning Commissionand wants to remain on Council to work on issues such as the zoning rewrite, the

tra c study, and litter problems. Work on the zoning re-write still has

a long way to go, according to Beck.She said the City has yet to articulate avision o what the island should be. Asan example, Beck used a Hurricane Hugoanalogy in which the entire beach is wipedout. What do we want Folly to look likei we have to rebuild? We dont want acookie-cutter approach, she said. Weneed to get creative and also make sureproper design standards are put in place.

Regarding the tra c study, Beck saidshe relied on the advice and opinions o the experts. She avors the tra c circleat Center Street and Indian Avenue thatshe said would make it easier or West sideresidents to exit the island, a median onCenter Street to insure pedestrian sa ety,and changing stop signs on Second Streetto provide or an alternative method o going rom North to South. Beck saidshe would also change the di rection o stopsigns at several E. Ashley intersections toslow tra c on that street.

Folly Beach recycles at a higher ratethan most places, according to Beck, andalthough she has not looked at the costissues, she said options to consider includetaking care o our own recycling, hiringsomeone other than the County to pick it up, or contracting or pick-up on thesummer weeks the County does not comeout.

Beck said what distinguishes her romother Council candidates is her ability to look at proposed legislation throughthe eyes o an attorney and her status asa parent with young children. I bringbalance to Council. Parents and younger

BoB HatcHer Hatcher is quick to admit that his frst

hurdle will be to convince Folly Beachvoters that he actually lives on the island.

While its true that he owns a house inSouth Windermere, his home on E. Arctic

is his legal residence. In act, Hatcher methis wi e there in 1947. Tis is my home,Hatcher said. What happens in Folly Beach is important to me.

Since he was retired and had thetime, Hatcher began attending Councilmeetings and was rustrated at the lack o communication. I elt there werethings I could do to help wrap things up,a better way o ask ing questions to promptthought ul responses rather than the Hey,dummy, youre doing it the wrong wayattitude I saw.

What concerns Hatcher most is thatFolly doesnt have a set o current zoningcodes and ordinances. He said people are

reluctant to buy homes or invest in Folly Beach because they dont know whatsgoing to happen. Having a moving targetis not conducive to growth, he said.

One o his strengths, according toHatcher, is his willingness to do hishomework. He has read the new ZoningOrdinance -all 278 pages - and he reads

the budgets each year. I can promise youthat when I sit down, Ive read everythingthats available because it a ects me andi it a ects me, it a ects the rest o FollyBeach.

Te City does not do enough on aday-to-day basis to insure that Councilmembers have the in ormation they needto make in ormed decisions, and it isnot doing enough to communicate withits citizens, according to Hatcher. Youhear residents talking, theyre unhappy

with this, unhappy with that, but theyreactually rustrated because they dontknow whats going on. He cites as anexample, the new Folly River Bridge,

which will have a huge impact on someresidents. Te City should sit down withthese people and say, Hey, heres whatsgoing on.

Hatcher said he would bring asubstantial business background to the

job. He has a degree in Economics andhas managed budgets and the logistics o managing resources to get the job done.Some members act like theyre running

or re-election at every Council meeting,Hatcher said. Im going to work realhard to be an e ective Councilman or

Despite website in ormationoutlining procedures or renters toobtain parking decals, Susan Breslincomplained to City Council that sheknew o several renters whose requestshad been re used. Te Mayor saidhe knew o no renters who had beendenied permits. Tats not true,Breslin said. I know people who havegone to get a permit and been denied.

Beckmann said Nobody whoBuddy (the Parking Czar) has turnedaway hasnt walked over to my o ceand worked it out with me.

well being, as well as the well-being o your animals. I am committed to makingthis transition as easy or you as possible

while giving you this reassurance: Yourneeds, whether it concerns public works,public sa ety or anything else have alwaysbeen and will continue to be my rstpriority.I know one o the major concerns isour Folly Beach animals and what

will happen i help is needed a ter 5p.m., Monday through Friday, and onthe weekends. I have met with Chie Boatwright to ensure animal relatedservices a ter hours have been addressedin a way which will be satis actory toour residents. All animal-related servicecalls and non-emergency matters willcontinue to be taken and dispatchedon a 24/7 basis. Citizens only have tocall the number they are accustomed tocalling or service, which is 588-2433.

A ter-hours animal related service calls will be assigned to a Folly Beach shi tsupervisor to ensure the appropriateanimal services response is taken. AnimalServices O cer Ralph Bryan, workingin partnership with Carol Linville o PetHelpers, will continue to build a cadreo animal services volunteers so that on-call assignments can be shared.

Knowing you have other concerns aboutthis transition which you would liketo discuss, I am available to meet withyou during the week rom 9 a.m. to 5p.m. For your convenience, however, Iam extending my weekday hours to beavailable rom 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. and alsoon Saturdays rom 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. Teonly dates and times I will be out o theo ce are Saturday, March 13, 2010, andMarch 15 18, 2010. When Council and I rst addressed the911 Consolidated Dispatch in 2008,there were several reasons we made thedecision to join other communities inCharleston County and transition to aConsolidated Dispatch Center: 1) thedispatchers in the Center will be well-trained; capable o relaying in ormationover the phone that could save l ives; 2)Folly Beach had a signi cant number o turnovers in the Dispatch Department,as many as nine in one year; 3) the callson non-emergency incidents will still behandled ultimately by the Folly BeachPublic Sa ety; and 4) a ter a period o three years, Charleston County will bepaying the entire cost o the dispatchers;Folly Beach will pay nothing. Mayor Beckmann began the meetingby handing out biodegradable trash bagsto be placed in dispensers at the walkovers

and passed out by the beach patrol. Tathappy note was short-lived as residentstook the podium to put the Mayor on thespot regarding parking decals or rentersand use o Follys Greenbelt money.

A resolution (R08-10) authorizingthe expenditure o $7,400 to install asurveillance camera, drop box and security phone inside the oyer at City Hall waspassed. Te drop box is used primarily orcomplaints or other communication romthe public and or the payment o parkingtickets. Discussion centered on the meritso having the box and camera outside vs.inside or whether they were needed at all.Te telephone is automatically linked to

the 911 dispatch system, according toChie Boatwright who said the phonecould be used as an on the spot meanso reporting emergencies and would beparticularly use ul to people who donthave cell phones.

Councilman Dave Stormer challengedpassage o a resolution (R10-10) authorizinga contract with Glick & Boehm orengineering services on the City Hallexpansion project. Stormer questioned

what he re erred to as a secret, sweetheartdeal and claimed that the contract dated

August 7, 2008 had been signed by MayorBeckmann, but had come to the attentiono City Council members only two weeks

ago and had not yet been seen by the City Attorney.Tis contract was not one entered

into by the City o Folly Beach, Stormerinsisted. He suggested that the contractbe sent to the City Attorney and theComptroller or stringent assurance thatit is in the best interests o the City. O particular concern to Stormer was thestipulation that the architect would receive8.25% o the construction costs, which hesaid was out o line with other contractshe had seen. Te resolution was rejectedby Council.

Te new Zoning Ordinance, which hadbeen scheduled or the February 23 City

Council meeting, had been scratched romthe agenda at the last minute. Council andthe Planning Commission had voted in a

joint session to put the ordinance on the

agenda so it could receive rst readingand go to the Planning Commission orpublic input be ore the election. However,

on February 22, three Council members -Beck, Goodwin and Stormer petitionedto put the Zoning Ordinance back on theagenda or the February 23 meeting, andit passed unanimously. Te Mayor said heand the Planning & Zoning Commissionchairman decided not to bring the plan

orward at this time because o someinteresting ideas brought orth recently that he said could result in signi cantchanges to the document.

Lets not make this a political ootbal l,Beck said. What we have now is apatchwork quilt. We need to hit the savebutton and continue to move orward

with this ordinance.

Tis ordinance is head and shouldersabove what we have now, Stormer added.Lets turn it over to the people and letthem have a stab at it.

Goodwin said passage o the ordinance would stop a moving target. Sure it willbe amended when we get comments romthe public, he said, but we need to get itin ront o them or their input.

In other business, a resolution (R11-10) approving the sole sourcing to B.P.Barber or engineering services in therelocation o sewer lines of the Folly Riverbridge passed unanimously; an ordinance(02-10) creating a Staf Event PlanningCommittee passed second reading withdissenting votes rom Mayor Beckmannand Councilman McCarty; an ordinance

clari ying the language on requests oropen containers (03-10) passed rstreading unanimously.

R abies is a viral d isease which attacksnerve and brain tissue. In SouthCarolina, wild animals accountor the highest number o reported rabies

cases, including raccoons, oxes, skunksand bats. Rarely in ected are rats, mice,squirrels, rabbits and hamsters. o help

you identi y the symptoms o Rabies andhow to handle potential in ections, theCity o Folly Beach is hosting a RabiesClinic on April 3 rom 9 a.m. noon atthe Fire Department headquarters, locatedin the 100 Block o West Cooper behindCity Hall.

How does it spread? Rabies istransmitted by a rabid animal biting ahealthy one. Te virus passes rom thesaliva o the sick animal through the wound into the healthy animal. It alsocan be spread when the saliva o a rabidanimal enters an opening in the skin,such as a cut or scratch. What are the symptoms in animals? Rabid animals appear to act diferently than normal, such as:

Wild animals which seem to beriendly or tame.

Wild animals, which you normally only see at night, seen in thedaytime.Pets which seem to have a hard time walking, eating or drinking.Signs o excitement or meanness inanimals.

Dont think that rabid animals can bespotted easily because they drool or oamat the mouth. Tis happens only some o the time in the latter stages o the disease. What are the symptoms is humans? Early symptoms in humans includeirritability, headache, ever andsometimes itching or pain at the siteo exposure. Te disease eventually progresses to paralysis, convulsions anddeath. Tere is no cure or rabies.

Take steps for prevention. Vaccinateyour dog and cat. Pets are more likely tobe bitten by wild animals. Vaccinatingyour dog and cat not only protects thepet, but also protects amily members who come in contact with the pet. InSouth Carolina, domesticated cats, dogs,and errets must be vaccinated. Do notallow your dog and cat to run ree.

Avoid strange-acting animals bothdomestic and wild. each your childrento stay away rom wild animals andunknown dogs and cats. Make sure they tell you i they are bitten or scratched by an animal.Dont attempt to keep wild animals as

pets. Tere is no rabies vaccine licensedor use in wild animals. What to do if bitten by an animalImmediately wash any wounds with soapand water.

Call your doctor and ollow hisrecommendations.Report the bite to your localhealth department. Te HealthDepartment may requirequarantining or testing o bitinganimals or rabies.Do not kill any animal in such a way that the head will be damaged.Te head must be in good condition

or laboratory testing.

He must have been sitting close tothe door

A suspect who walked out on a $230bar tab at the Sur Bar about 1:00 a.m.on 1/21 has not been apprehended,according to Folly Beach police. He and

a male riend were seen driving o at aast rate o speed in a white Ford pick-up

truck.

He seemed like such a nice guy Police were called to the Holiday Inn

around 3:00 a.m. on 1/24 by a woman who reported personal items had beenstolen rom her room while she wasasleep. According to the victim, she hadmet a man at Snapper Jacks earlier inthe evening. A ter having some drinksthere, they went to her hotel room. Shestated she ell asleep about midnight

with the man in the room. When sheawoke around 3:00 a.m., the man wasgone. Also missing were the victims .22magnum, $140 in twenty dollar bills, andsome costume jewelry. Te victim didntknow the suspects name, but describedhim as a white male in his late 20s witha dark military style haircut and ascar on his right temple rom an Iraq

war wound. Te investigating o cerasked or assistance rom the sta at theHoliday Inn, but they did not know

how to pull up the security ootage orthe evening. No one at Snapper Jacksrecalled seeing the couple in the bar thatevening. Te handgun was entered intothe NCIC stolen guns fle.

Seacrest Lane about 3:00 p.m. on 2/14,an o cer was approached by a neighborabout a white emale wandering around

with a dog. Te o cer located thesubject, who was disoriented and couldnot make a complete sentence. EMS wascalled and the subject was transported toMUSC. Te dog was placed in the kennel

or his own sa ety.

Hesaid the landlord then got upset becauseo the complaint and decided to evictall his tenants. Te victim said he hadnot reported the threat at the time itoccurred because he was waiting or theeviction hearing, but when he got therethe clerk rescheduled the hearing becausethe magistrate was out sick. As thelandlord and the tenants being evicted

were walking out o court, the landlord

pointed his fnger at one o the tenants asi it were a gun and he was going to shoother. Te clerk saw the gesture and calledthe Charleston County Sheri s o ce. Itis not known i anyone pressed charges.

Sa ety o cers were dispatched to an E.Hudson address on 2/19 due to a reporto a young man fghting an older man.Te o cers could not locate the subjects,but when they returned to the station thevictim was there, having been walked toCity Hall by the complainant. Te victimre used fve requests or medical attentionand declined to press charges. wenty minutes later, o cers were again called tothe E. Hudson address. Photographs weretaken o the victims ear and hands, theareas that showed the most injuries. Tesuspect is a tenant who was being evicted.He was located and charged with Assault.

You want me to do what?On 2/20 a victim came to the PublicSa ety o ce to report a vandalism tohis vehicle. Te victim said he had beencoming to work at Ritas around noonand made a wide turn into the parkinglot to avoid a puddle. Tree young boysbetween the ages o 15 and 17 were onskate boards and they thought he wastrying to hit them. Te victim heardthem yell a pro anity suggesting that hedo something personal to himsel , and

when he returned to his vehicle severalhours later a shorter version o that samepro anity was scratched into the le t reardoor o his Chevy Blazer. Te estimateddamage to the vehicle is $300. Te

suspects have not been identifed.

Got beer? At approximately 1:00 a.m. on 2/20, a white male was seen staggering acrossCooper Avenue toward Center Street

with a glass o beer in his hand. He wascoming rom the direction o Te Sur Bar and the glass appeared to be the sametype used at the Sur Bar. Te subjecthad a strong odor o alcohol, his eyes

were red and glassy, he was unsteady onhis eet, and he was slurring his words.

He admitted taking the glass rom theSur Bar but claimed not to know hecouldnt drink alcohol in the street.

A ter returning the glass to the Sur bar,the subject became argumentative anduncooperative. He would not standstill or the o cer to complete hispaperwork. Te suspect was arrested or

open container and disorderly conductand transported to Charleston County Detention Center.

Was that Abraham Lincoln? At around midnight on 2/20 Scott,the bouncer at Snapper Jacks, wasattempting to talk to a male subjecton the sidewalk, who appeared to beintoxicated and was having troubleunderstanding what was beingsaid. When the o cer asked or hisidentifcation, the suspect handed him afve dollar bill. A woman who identifedhersel as the subjects wi e came out o the bar, but she was intoxicated to thepoint that she rambled on and would notcooperate. Te o cer o ered to call a cabto take them home, but at th is point thesubjects began to use pro anity, re erringto the o cers as specifc personal partso the body. A crowd was orming, so theo cers arranged or the cab to meet thesubjects at the Pantry. A riend a soberadult showed up and o ered to takethem home, so the cab was cancelled, andboth subjects were issued citations ordisorderly conduct.

Baby, its cold outsidePolice received a call on 2/21 thatsomeone was trespassing at 205 E. Arctic.

When the o cers arrived, they located

two subjects hiding in separate roomson the property. Tey admitted they

were not supposed to be on the property and had jumped over a locked gate togain entry. One o the suspects wascited or trespassing and released. Teother subject gave a wrong name but theo cers discovered he was misrepresentinghimsel to avoid arrest. When his trueidentity was discovered, he was arrestedon two outstanding bench warrants andtransported to the Charleston County Detention Center.

W ell, I eel that I have let you down. I put o seeingUp in the Air until now. Why? I have no clue.Maybe it was George Clooney, maybe I elt there were more pressing lms out there to see, or maybe it was allthe hype surrounding the lm that put me o . All I can donow is say, I you havent seen this lm, you should, and I amsorry or missing such a wonder ul piece o cinematography.

Jason Reitmans Up in the Air is a brilliant, simple lmthat is superbly done. George Clooney plays Ryan Bingham,a man who res people or a living. Large companies pay Bingham to transition people rom their work li e to anuncertain uture. He has the ormula down to a science andtries to make the transition a springboard to something betterin the peoples lives. Te challenge or him is dealing with thereactions o those he transitions out o work. Be ore the personrealizes what has happened, Bingham is back in an airplane,staying in whatever hotel room his expense report o ers.

Bingham lives out o a small piece o black, carry-onluggage. His little bit o joy in li e is racking up rewardspoints through the airlines and hotels, working toward analmost incomprehensible nal total. He takes advantage o those secret lounges at the airports and empty lines at thehotels with the gold plaques in ront o them, continuously traveling but never really connecting to the outside world. Notsurprisingly, he is single and disconnected rom his amily and

riends. Tis is how he has chosen to live year a ter year and heenjoys his hermit li estyle; or so he thinks.

Binghams li e o solitude comes to a quick end when hends himsel with a traveling partner. An ambitious go-getter,

Natalie Keener (Anna Kendrick) eels thatthe company could be more efcient andcould save a lot o money by conducting

rings in a live chat broadcast orum.Binghams boss (Jason Bateman) puts himin charge o showing Keener the ropes andplaces both out in the eld, but his bossmakes it clear that this will be Binghamslast dance.

Reitman, who has also doneexcellent lms such as Tank You orSmoking and Juno, nails it again. His

lms are simple with engaging storylinesand smart, witty banter between thecharacters. Juno is de nitely my avorite,but Up In the Air is a close second!

As I said be ore, there was a lot o hypearound this lm. A lot o the praise ocusedon the actors stellar per ormances, but italso spoke to what was going on in oursociety in regards to the massive corporatelayo s. I eel this lm will become a classicbecause o its real ocus, and its perspectiveon the importance o human connections.In a world that is consumed by textmessaging, emails and podcasts, we arelosing our humanity, our compassion andsympathy. Tis idea o a world disconnectedis something to ponder.
