Some people like them raw. For others, they aretruly at their best when baked a la Rockeeller, broiled, casseroled, ried, steamed, stewed, and

sometimes turned into stung. However you enjoythem, all lovers o these mollusks can agree thatthey are a treat. Feelings about oysters have quite awide range; rom rumors o them being a powerulaphrodisiac to people who can barely look at them, claiming they are slimy and just plain gross. Oystersare revered as delicacies and beloved all over the world, and we as Charlestonians are some o the luckiestinhabitants on earth - in this humble writers' opinion

    - to live so close to some o the most amazing oystersthat this water world has to oer. Yet, bellying upto the table with a sleeve o saltines, a bottle o hotsauce, a dirty old rag, and an oyster shucker in hand isonly the tail end o their story. With the help o someextremely hard-working men, they make the rigorousjourney to the shelves o your local seaood provider oravorite restaurant. o learn where they came rom, however, you must frst make your way deep into themarsh to the playground o the oystermen.

Oysters have been documented as a ood sourcealong the coasts o Europe since the time o theRomans. Tey have been cultured and harvested inthe more modern sense o the word or a ew hundredyears. Most o the amilies who keep the businessalive around the Charleston area have been doing itor multiple generations, and in some cases or over

250 years. Te culling o oysters is a tradition. Itsa back breaking, repetitive, exceedingly dicult jobthat hasnt really changed over time. Its a proessionthat is passed like a torch rom the elder men in aamily to their sons. From an early age, they are taughtthe process; and there is a lot to it. From learninghow to navigate through winding creeks to locatingbeds tucked away like little secret gardens hiddenthroughout the marshes, all the way to the actualcultivation and maintenance o the beds.

Sustainable seaood is not a new concept in theworld o oystering. Te importance o reseeding bedsto insure continued viability is what has allowed theamilies who do this to continue in their trade. Andwhen the time comes or the next generation to takeover, not only do they inherit the knowledge o theircrat, they oten also receive the acres o marshlandthat their ancestors have been working or ages; andthey inherit a legacy. Tere is a sense o pride that you

eel when you are amidst the oystermen;a pride that comes rom knowing thatyou are a part o something much biggerthan yoursel, and knowing that yourlies work will live on through the worko your sons and grandsons.

You can talk all day about pickingoysters, but according to the men whoactually do it or a living, you really have

no idea what it entails until you go outand experience it yoursel. As someonewho has grown up on Charlestons barrierislands, I must admit I was a little ashamedo mysel that this was an experience thatI have never had. But as it turns out, Imnot alone. Most people who enjoy thesetasty little morsels on a regular basis haveabsolutely no idea what it takes to getthem. So I decided to take to the creekand get a rsthand experience o what ittakes to procure one o my avorite snacks.

I enlisted the help o Captain HalWertan and his capable crew to learnthe ins and outs o what it means to bean Oysterman. I met the guys at thedock at Bowens Island just ater 7 a.m.

on a Friday morning to begin my oystereducation. Oystering is a line o workwhich leaves you at the whim o MotherNature. Tere are only a ew months othe year when the water gets cold enoughto harvest oysters, and during that time, you are at the mercy o the tides, wind, rain and the limited hours o daylightavailable in the winter months. Beoreheading out, make sure that you arewearing lots o layers. Layers to keep youdry, ollowed by layers to keep you warm. Its you against the elements on these boattrips, and it is in your best interest to stackthe deck in your avor. Fai lure to properlyprepare yoursel or an oyster picking tripleads to hours o salty wetness, shivering,

and an overwhelming desire to toughenup and not complain, because theres nowhining in this mans world.

We pushed o at the lowest tidepossible, and I was almost instantly inawe. Captain Hal navigated us throughthe tiniest, shallowest creeks Ive everseen a boat go through, and he did it withamazing precision. As the motor is ever sogently raised and lowered, the guys work asa single unit. Standing on the bow o theboat, the oystermen point at which spotsin the creek are the deepest and withouta word spoken they lean in unison romstarboard to port and back again, whichprovides just enough tilt one way or theother to keep us rom getting stuck in themud. Te guys know their way throughthese tiny inlets and waterways the sameway that kids know every single bikepath or short cut in their neighborhoods.Seemingly identical bends in the river arecalled out by name. For Hal, it eels like

this is his neighborhood. He has been apart o these marshes or his entire lie,and as we ride around, I am delightedto hear stories about his grandather, theormer head o this amily business. Justas I realized that we had turned let andright so many times that I had absolutelyno idea where we were, one nal bendopened up into patches o mudatspeppered with clusters o meaty oysters.

Once everyone was suited up andsealed watertight, they jump overboard

and instantly sank knee deep into theplu mud. Everything seems a bit moredifcult when you are trying to do it outhere. Te simple act o walking is almostpainul ater about ve steps, i youre notused to it. Accurately handling a hammerwith rozen ngers in order to properlycull the oysters is a task that becomesexceedingly more difcult as the daygoes on. And then you have to carry theoysters back to the boat. Tey are reallyheavy, and until your basket or bag is ull,you have to trudge through the mud withit in tow. It is incredibly hard work. Teonly clock is the tide, and you have unti l itrises to get the job done. Your motivationcomes rom the men working aroundyou. When your pay is a direct reectiono what you accomplish individually ina given day, you may notice that yourability to sel motivate becomes more andmore efcient. In this sort o work, it isnatural that skills like speed and accuracybecome admirable qualities when lookingor your crew. As the sun and the waterslowly rise and the oyster beds slip underthe water, its time to climb back intothe boat and begin the arduous task oretracing your steps. While I thought thismeant the end o the day, I was wrong.Oystering is also an exercise in patience.Returning to a basket can mean tr ying toget a boat over an unpicked bed with onlya ew inches o water protecting it, or itcould mean getting down on all ours tocrawl through reeds and marsh grass onlyto have to carry the load back by handthrough now deeper water and squishiermud. Once all is loaded, you still have tobring them back to the dock, wash them, bag them, tag them, and get them readyto be sold.

We got 18 bushels on my trip andreturned to the dock a round 11:30. By thetime the washing and bagging was done,it was ater one in the aternoon, and allthe guys I had been working with weremaking plans to be back on the boat byour so that they could beat most o theevening tide and catch their quota or the

day.So what is it that keeps people coming

back to this job or generations? It iseasily one o the most challenging andphysically draining things that I haveever attempted, and lets be honest,

its not a job that is known or yieldingmillionaires. So, why would you keepdoing it? I would imagine that part o themotivation comes rom working hard oryour money and knowing that you havetruly earned everything that you have.At the same time, there is another sort opeace on the water. While the morningbegan with laughter, jokes, and one o theunniest hybrids o calypso-country musicthat I have ever heard, once the music wasturned o, a serenity o the purest orm

washed over me. Standing in the mudand eeling the ebb and ow o the wateron my legs, watching the sun rise over themarsh grass and hearing nothing morethan the wind in the trees, the air escapingrom the blowhole o a porpoise crestingnearby, the squawking o sea birds, andthe clinking o hammers on shells wasone o the most calming moments Iveever had. Tat Friday morning at about 8oclock it hit me once again; why I movedback to the Lowcountry. I understoodwhy they do what they do. Tere isa Zen out there, a sense o calm that ishard to achieve anywhere else in this ast-paced world. Watching the sun rise overthe marsh was beautiul, and all o the

anger I had elt about lie at 6 oclock thatmorning as I stumbled to my coee potslowly washed away with the tide as wepicked and breathed and smiled.

Hal and his men make up a handul othe near 155 oystermen in the Charlestonarea. He provides or three restaurantsregularly, with Bowens Island being hispriority. As one o the largest and mostwell-known oyster providers in town, thisis a big job. On a good day, Hal and hismen can bring in 70 to 80 bushels, and ona good night, Bowens Island Restaurantcan go through 40 to 60, and i you actorin private parties that number can easilydouble.

Opened in 1947, not much has changedout at Bowens. Owner Robert Barberworks hard to maintain the traditionsand standards set by his grandmother,May Bowen, when she began therestaurant nearly 65 years ago. You canstill nd shells on the oor, the dcor isstill provided by the patrons and a cupo magic markers, and it's still all aboutthe ambience and your state o mind. In2006, all o Roberts eort and attentionto detail paid o as he walked up ona stage in New York City to receive hisJames Beard Award or the way in whichhis restaurant has kept alive the traditionsthat are so deeply sewn into oyster lore, not to mention southern tradition. He

accepted this honor wearing a tuxedo andstandard white oysterman boots.

In my opinion, oysters are naturesperect little snack. Tey are good oryou, and they come complete with theirown sterile packaging, a delicious naturaljus, and are by nature a social ood. Teyare the perect accompaniment to beerand parties.

Beore the weather once again returnsto the sweltering, sticky sauna that we allknow as Charleston summer, make sureyou make some time to belly up to a tablewith a group o your riends and enjoyslurping down some oysters.

While thebird is perched, it usually has three toes in ront and one in back. When an Ospreycatches a sh, its eet and toes are positioned with two toes on either side o the sh,one oot ahead o the other. Starting on February 2, Folly BeachPublic Saety Chie Brad Wadehosted two days o Community-

Oriented Policing training on the island

with ocers rom the Isle o Palms,Mount Pleasant, Charleston County, and other surrounding areas. Tisconcept looks to bridge the relationshipbetween residents and their Police orcebecause, i residents have no aith intheir Police orce, or vice versa, law andorder is hindered.

We broke into three groups andormulated some questions. Ater wedecided on a problematic issue, we wentout with our questions and engaged thecommunity, stated Wade.

Tese ocers ound that as theytraveled around and knocked ondoors, most people were very receptive.Tis may have been the rst time the

Police have provided a courtesy callto their residents on the island, andin interviewing residents, the ocersound that trac and alcohol remainsome o the major issues on Folly. Teocers also went around asking peoplequestions on the street in order to ndout their concerns, as well.

With these positive eforts, therelationship between Follys nest andresidents will hopeully continue togrow in a positive manner.

I one has traveled out to Folly Beach, odds are that they have seen a recentlypainted Folly Boat. As many will tell

you, this boat is an adopted symbol, otenrepresenting the quirky characteristics thatmake Folly Beach so unique. Residents

and tourists alike utilize the boat as amessage board, canvas, or a memoriam. However, there are others who eel thatit is an environmental danger and visiblenuisance. Luckily or both schools othought, steps have recently been taken tobeautiy the boat or the rst time sinceit arrived in its present location in 1989,as well as to complete soil samples andother tests to measure the painted boatsenvironmental impact.

On Saturday February 19, nearly 40volunteers participated in the rst annualFolly Boat Clean and Benet. EricStaord ultimately got the ball rolling onthis concept, going to the City o FollyBeach as well as the Ofce o Oceanand Coastal Resource Management(OCRM), to nd out what could bedone about potential damage caused byrequent painting and litter. Te Cityo Folly Beach was more than happy toaccommodate Staord. However, it wasan area o difculty or OCRM as they

believed that the boat was state propertyand that there was a lot o grey areainvolved.

Nonetheless, Staord was veryconcerned by the act that those paintingthe boat may be using harmul lead-based

paints, and as leaving large amounts opaint cans and litter behind. Along withEric Draper, ounder o the Folly Boatwebsite, (www.ollyboat.com), they beganto look into various options. Staorddecided that they should take soil samplesrom six dierent areas surrounding the

boat, as well as map out the area. In takingthese samples, they were basically lookingto provide a paint-sand matrix, as they eltthere may be a high lead concentration inthe soil.

    When the samples were collected,

Staord took them to General EngineeringLabs, which ran a CLP analysis othe soil, and ound that it contained nolead. Ater that issue was cleared up,they moved on to the other blight: litter.Staord and Draper realized that severalvolunteers would be needed to clean upthe area o marshland around the boat aswell as to dig up topsoil to be replaced inorder to insure the boats stability. Aterthey brought this new inormation to theFolly Council, they were more than happyto accommodate the repair o the boat.

Te City o Folly Beach provided arear-loader truck typically used to hauldirt and/or road construction materials.

Staord brought in his own trailer tocarry the backll shell, dirt mixture andseveral buckets and shovels to move thedirt. Te work began at about noon, andit was denitely a sight to see that manyvolunteers helping out.

In assembly line ashion, thesevolunteers began shoveling away thetopsoil layer rom around the base o theboat to about a six oot distance romthe hull. Tis soil was then placed into

buckets, which was brought to the rear-loader truck and packed in. Once Staordelt as i enough soil had been removed, the same process was then used to ll inthe empty areas, using the ll mixture. With about 40 volunteers, this process

only took about an hour and a hal, and al lvolunteers seemed very happy to be there.Since there were so many volunteers, those looking or another activity coveredthe marsh areas and brush surroundingthe boat. Walking around the area, theypicked up litter, bottles and other pieces obrush that may have had paint on them.Te tainted dirt removed was taken inthe truck to C & D landll, where it wasdisposed o in an environmentally soundmanner.

Participating were some students romJames Island Charter High School, somemembers o the Surriders Foundation, residents, and visitors alike. People o allages and all connections to the islandproved that this project can be completedrequently and efciently, preserving thenatural areas around the boat. One keyitem that Staord and Draper want tostress is that lead-based paint should neverbe used on the boat. Also, a drop clothor tarp may help in protecting the soilunderneath.

Ater the boat was clean, Bowens IslandRestaurant was kind enough to providetwo bushels o oysters or participants attheir dockside pavilion. Staord boughttwo kegs or the event, and people wereable to provide donations or the next boatclean. Also helping to sponsor the eventwere the NOLS program, Diana Clarkand the City o Folly Beach.

In such a short amount o time, witha relatively large crowd to help, it appearsthat it wont take much to protect thenatural habitat around the boat. Teboat is still used on a daily basis, otenpainted up to two or three times a day.Staord would like to see a boat cleaningparty happen once a year, but with suchan enthusiastic turnout, it might happenmore oten than that.

Once again, Liam Neeson is kickingass and taking names in Unknown.Neesons strong-willed, seemingly

honorable character goes up againstunknown orces who are threatening himand a loved one. Wow, I eel like I couldbe writing a review or his 2008 lm,aken. Modiy the plot a bit, sprinklein some pretty new blonde actresses andmake a slight change in location and youhave Unknown, starring Liam Neeson,Diane Kruger and the snooze est that isJanuary Jones.

As expected, we begin with Neesonplaying the everyday man who is soongoaded into the one-man army that is Dr.Martin Harris (Liam Neeson). Pursuingboth his own identity and his wie, Harrisawakens ater a car accident in Berlin todiscover that his wie (January Jones)suddenly doesnt recognize him, andanother man (Aidan Quinn) has assumedhis identity. Harris nds himsel alonebeing pursued by unknown assassins, but he is soon aided by an unlikely ally(Diane Kruger). Harris plunges head rstinto a lethal mystery that will orce him toquestion everything.

    As we watch the ever-endearing

Neeson, we are quickly and unknowinglyhooked. As an audience member you areright there with him, ready or revengeand compassionate to his cause. Tisgolden lm ormula has worked onaudience members beore and no matterhow many times it happens to me, I ndmysel on the edge o my seat!

Unknown is not a perect lm, butwith a veteran actor at the helm, you ndyoursel enjoying the surprisingly well-directed lm. Rather unknown himsel, director Jaume Collet-Serra (Orphan)

creates a thrill ride that closely resemblesthe pace o an old Hitchcock lm. Not asbrilliantly done as Polanski with GhostWriter but still commendable. Weavingin renetic car chases in downtown Berlinwith stylish chess-like cat and mousemoves in an art gallery, Collet-Serrasafection or everything Hitchcock isundeniable.

Even though the plot asks you toignore a lot o holes, Unknown is still anedge-o-your-seat nail-bitter. Te almosttwo hour run time eels like nothing at allso sit back, dont think too much and letthe charming Neeson whisk you away to aworld o deception, murder and mystery.

Bear with me; I am about to sendyou on a time trip to a place youwould like to orget. Winter 2011

was bleak and nasty. How rigid was it?Lets just say it was colder than usual.

Millions o fsh washed up on the beach, but it was too cold to even smell them.Several Wisconsinite amilies went backhome or the winter. Rumor has it that4th block got eight inches o snow twice, and you had to drive three blocks beoreyour rozen tires rounded out. I you needmore proo, then you must have temporaryamnesia due to hypothermia. Believe me.It was bone-chillingly raw.

Te worst part o it all was that surerswere also cold. Impossible, you say? Whileit was certainly not air, we were reezingthis winter. Boots and gloves were all butrequired as water temperatures spiraledinto the orties. A riot nearly broke out on

Center Street over neoprene hoods whenthe water at the Washout went south oorty. Out in the lineup, surers huddledup with dolphins who also did not wantto turn into popsicles. rust me, it wasdownright arctic. A great many olksthought we were in or another ice age,and I or one expected a run on elephantguns at Wal-Mart. But then the mercurystopped plummeting, gained traction,

    and started climbing.

First, it got windy. Ten sunny days

started popping up and it actually gotwarm. Tose o you who are weatherafcionados might say that spring hasfnally arrived. We saw air temperatures inthe seventies three weeks ago. Te water isnow in the mid-fties and rising. Out inthe lineup, hands morphed rom neopreneblack to pink and numb as olks let theirgloves at home. Tats right, the world ischanging again. You can still keep a Four

Loko cold i you sink it in the ocean butnot on the beach. So sell the goose down

parka and the tire chains, because it willnever be cold again!

Area surers also had reason oroptimism. We experienced better surconditions during the last hal o Februarythan we have or several months. Nearlyevery day had some waist-high waves iyou knew when and where to look. Highwinds made or choppy conditions on allbut a ew days, but in the end we had sur.

Te toughest days saw heavy northeastwinds that took all the power out o theswell, and surers generally ared betteron days with southwest winds. Anotherbeneft o periodic Earth axis retrograde,

or spring as we now call it, is moredaylight hours. Te nine to fve work crewcan now catch a ew waves ater work.Tat is what I recommend as something totruly celebrate. ake it light, my riends.

Most o us have been there beore. You havebeen in a relationship long enough to havegotten comortable and then something

happens. For everyone its dierent. For some its themere mention o the word boyriend or girlriend. Forothers, its exclusivity; spending nights on end together,

moving in, introductions to riends or amily - some evenmake it to talks o marriage. But somewhere you beginto wonder i this is the relationship or you.

Real lie is not like the movies where everyone is perectand happy until they are in the dress or the tux, and oncethe big day arrives they hyperventilate, pace back andorth around a room, and wonder what the hell they aredoing. Most brides and grooms that I have known haveactually been very collected on their wedding day. Tey

are happy, excited, and completely ready or what theyare about to do. Its getting to that point that is the realchallenge.

Te journey o getting to know someone that intimatelyinvolves all sorts o eelings and obstacles. From anger toelation, rom terric pain to absolute euphoria, there is

sadness, joy, loneliness, companionship, moments whenyou eel like you were made or each other, and oneswhen you hate each others guts. But when you are ina relationship, each o these eelings are elt with such adeep passion that you eel like they are shaking you toyour soul.

So when will the moment come or you? What willyou do when it gets there? Do you stay with what youhave gotten used to, or do you simply walk away and

go out into the world without thecomort o someone at your side, without someone who understandsexactly how you eel beore youever say a word? Its a really scarythought, or a really brave one, depending on how you look at it. In

the end, dont we all just want onemoment with a crystal ball to seewhich path leads to the uture oyour dreams, and which path leadsto despair?

Sadly, the answer is that thereis no one to give you the answer.Tere is no crystal ball, and nomatter how many people you ask,

none o them will be able to tell you what to do. Its onlyyou who can decide. A wise man once said, When loveis not madness, it is not love. Another said, Eventuallyyou will come to understand that love heals everything, and love is all there is. Ten there is the guy who said,A ship is sae in harbor, but thats not what ships are or.Do you stay, or do you go? Te horizon is beautiul, andthe top o this cli is sae with plenty o room to pitcha tent and settle down or a while. But jumping o intothe unknown its scary, exciting, and an extremelydicult decision to commit to.

Ive had people tell me that pro/con lists help. Iveactually known more than one person who has toldme they fipped a coin. I also know people who havespent months agonizing over the decision. So when thequestion presents itsel, Should I stay, or should I go,the only suggestion I have is to ollow your heart. Dowhat you eel, not what you think. I you are looking orhappiness, and the question is head or heart, the happiestpeople I know would say heart.
