Its a remarkable eat rom an outsidersperspective. wo years ago, theramshackle Seashore Farmers Lodge

767 at the intersection o the new andold Sol Legare Roads was literally held upby diagonal support beams with a tarp

stretched over its roo. Walk through the building when it

ocially reopens this Saturday and youwont see a hint o disrepair. Its a model caseo historical preservation and restoration. But consider the buildings origins on SolLegare Island and theres nothing out-o-the-ordinary about its revival.

Ater the Civil War, reedmen (manyrom James Islands McLeod Plantation)bought up land along Sol Legare. Telong, narrow lots allowed water access andarming plots, with houses situated alongthe road onto the island. Arican-Americans

were not allowed loans or insurance at the white-run banks and frms. Te FarmersLodge was ormed to remedy that.

Construction o the building began in1900 and was completed around 1908.

Everyone in the community was a member.Te structure served as a school, a church, and a central meeting place. Drumssignaled important meetings and events.

A deep, slow beat might alert neighbors oa death. A rapid rhythm might call them

together or a picnic.Upon entering the Lodge, neighbors

deposited their pennies, nickels, and dimesinto a cup by door. When a man ell sickand couldnt harvest his seeds, or a homeneeded repairs, the collective pot servedas a source o loans. Everyone contributedand everyone had access. Te expressionput a saucer on his chest was born out othis shared responsibility i a deceasedpersons amily was short on money or auneral, a saucer at their wake would soonfll up with money or the burial.

Tat spirit - and the Lodge - survivestoday. Members now pay $5 a month, andhave access to $500 lie insurance to covertheir uneral upon their passing. Ater sucha long time, they once again have a buildingto physically tie them together.

he bulk o the meeting involved the Design andReview Boards recommendations to the PlanningCommission or new design guidelines. DRBs

guidelines were general rather than specic, promptinga back-and-orth conversation about whether they weresucient to protect the City in the event o a legalchallenge to turning down a building request. Membersalso deliberated on the character o the island.

DRB members argued that Follys architecture rangedrom classic cottages to neo-modern, making exact

specications dicult. Te ocus was avoiding uturesnaus like the approval o the beach ball place, identiedas reasure Island Beach Store on Folly Road, a structureapproved with virtually no public comment.

    DRBs recommendation reads:

During its colorul history, Folly Beach has accumulatedan eclectic mix o buildings that refect the varied cross sectiono its inhabitants. It is a small town that derives a charm romnot being pretentious or too ancy. It is a rare and unique place where a wide cross section o people, rich and poor,

peaceully co-exist and share the island with vacationers andvisitors that come to Folly to relax. Tus, its buildings shouldrespect the inormal, un loving, non-homogenous aspects oFollys culture.

New buildings and renovations should employ practicalelements native to southern coastal communities such as

porches, decks, abundant windows and doors, awnings, andample roo overhangs as a basic philosophy. Tese elementscombined with wall and roo articulations should beemployed to break up the massing so that a compatible scaleand visual interest is achieved.

Te design needs to address the entire exterior envelope othe building so that it does not appear to be a aade attachedto a disparate box. Ornamentation should be simple, artul,or interesting without appearing overbearing or contrived.Buildings should show a respect or the past while not beingovertly constrained by convention.

Te guidelines were approved and sent onto CityCouncil or consideration as part o the zoningordinance.

Te meeting concluded with approval o a generalplan to replace street signs on Folly Beach with newer,

ancier poles that include directional signs to businesseson side streets. Businesses would pay or their businessname signs, and these would be removed i they close ortheir business license is revoked. Specic details o thenew signposts appearance were not determined.

    Letter from the Editor

Im halway through editing this weeks Current, andAnton Dumars Salt Marsh Diaries just stopped me inmy tracks.

We are lucky people. Chances are, you either liveon Folly Beach or youre here or a ew days. Soak itin. Antons columns always help us remember what abeautiul place we live in, but this one reminds us osomething much bigger.

At the risk o sounding like an '80s prog-rock lyric,Im reminded that we are each just specks amidst thesand o an innite beach. Lie comes and goes. We drawcomort and enlightenment rom the natural worldaround us, one in which reason and purpose are highlysimplied, and death is just a part o the cycle.

Returning rom my trek in Peru, its been a challengeto maintain the mental clarity Id gained, again aced

with the conusing barrage o responsibilities that come with editing a newspaper and making a living as areelance scribbler.

Fortunately, even at my desk, I can see egrets andherons swooping over the marsh. I can eel the windthrough my window as I type. And when I need a break,I can walk outside under an April blue sky and hum aDickey Betts rif in my mind.

Tis Saturday will be a good day to be on Folly. Rideyour bike to Sol Legare and admire the heartelt work

completed at the Seashore Farmers Lodge. Ten cruiseon your two-wheeler past the trac, on your way backto the Sea and Sand Festival. Check out the scheduleon page 3. By the way, Mac Leaphart might be the bestsongwriter youve never heard o.

Sur f Fi lm Prem ie resWaves in Our POcket nOW available

By Jud Bushkar and Blake Bunch

Historically, South Carolina hasbeen known or mediocre sur.In the trailer or Waves In Our

Pocket, Bryant Tomas seems to be

telling everyone exactly what they expectto hear about the state o surng in ourcommunity. Te young lmmaker romFolly Beach says, Waves In our Pocketisa beautiul story about a small barrierisland. Tere are no waves in SouthCarolina. You cant sur there and weregoing to show that.

Are we condemned to live in theshadow o east coast sur destinationslike Cape Hatteras? o the contrary, the Tomas Brothers have produceda beautiul lm with plenty o wavesand amazing surng. Moreover, their

work celebrates surng and the surngliestyle in true Lowcountry style.

For months, Charleston surersanxiously awaited the release o thenew Folly Beach sur movie. TomasBrothers Productions had a greatollowing on the internet with their shortclip eatures, but no one knew whetherthe local boys could put it all together ina eature length lm. OnMarch 27, Waves In OurPocketpremiered to a soldout American Teater indowntown Charleston.

Any doubts the audiencemay have had were erasedas thousands o hours o

work over the last twelvemonths converged on thesilver screen.

    Local surers, riends,

and amily packed thehouse twice that Saturdaynight, cheering each timethey knew a rider onthe screen. Te applause was almostnonstop, and many o the areas surers

were eatured. Te crowd was stoked andeveryone praised the cinematography, soundtrack, and polished production othe lm. Bryant, Ellison, and RobertTomas thanked God, their amily, their sponsors and the local surers ormaking the movie possible. McKevlinsSur Shop sponsored the event andeveryone was extremely happy with theattendance and spirit o the crowd.

One week later, on April 2, thelm premiered on Folly Beach. Ater

speaking beore City Council twiceduring the month o March, the TomasProductions crew was permitted to blocko West Cooper rom the beginningo Center Street to a bit shy o the restation. Another great crowd came outor a estive block party. -shirts andDVDs sold briskly at a booth beside thescreen, and the sta o lm sponsor SurBar worked hard to keep the lines shortor the capacity crowd, with the baropen and a cooler outside selling dratbeer and barbeque.

Te band Jason and the Juggernautskept the crowd at ease with some o theiramiliar classics or an hour or so whilethey waited or the sun to set. Around 8

    p.m., McKevlins Brian Eichelman took

the stage to thank the crowd and praisethe Tomas Brothers or their work.

As the screen leaped to lie, acollective smile washed over the aces

in the audience. Te eeling was thatthese truly are the best o times and weall should be thankul or what we have.Tese are our riends on our waves atthis time. O course, we share all three.Perhaps this eeling and a willingnessto share it are the greatest ideas acommunity can produce. A block partylike this can only happen on Folly Beach, and the support o the City Counciland the Public Service Department wasinstrumental in its success.

Since the 1960s, sur movies havebeen made and watched by surers. Teyexist outside mainstream cinema and aredistinguished rom Hollywood moviesby many actors. Sur lms have a strongsense o place and time. However, plotlines and dialogue are less importantthan action and cinematography insur movies. Tis allows imagery andenergy to step to the ront. As you watchWaves In Our Pocket, you get a strong

sense o Folly Beach and its interaction with the Atlantic Ocean. Bryantscinematography and editing seamlesslymerge the areas nest surng, best

waves, and a driving soundtrack that isupbeat and current.

In one scene a surer is skateboardingin a bowl, overlaying a sequence oskatie sur tricks. Te movie thenbriey shits locations to Caliornia, showing the vast dierence between the

west coast and east coast wave heights. However, in the lm, there are easily aton o overhead waves caught on Folly

proper. All in al l, the lm is a highly personal

view on what it means to be a surer inthe southeast. Here, you sur because itis what you enjoy. Its denitely not orthe recognition, although in this case itshighly deserved.

Whether you own hundreds o surmovies or have never seen one, consider

watching this impressive local eort.Viewers have one more chance to seeit on the big screen when it airs at theCharleston International Film Festivalin May. Te lm is currently availableat McKevlins or $20, ready to nurtureyour surng soul. Waves In Our Pocketisthe essence o lie and surng on Folly

    From Run Down to Renewed

Bill Cubby Wilder, a ormer JamesIsland town councilman, recalls a happychildhood based around the SeashoreFarmers Lodge. Fourth o July and LaborDay meant huge picnics at the building,

with plenty o watermelon and churninghomemade ice cream on the porch. On

weekends, hed save up his change to watchthe picture show projected inside.

Even back then, he knew the buildinghad a storied past. When historian KarenNickless began to collect an oral historyo the site in 2006, Wilder and his mother

were called upon to share their stories andknowledge.

Its a piece o history nobody knowsabout, says Wilder. Its so hard to ndanything. Its all word o mouth.

Wilder points out the dirt road (OldSol Legare Road) which passes in ront othe building: its the same path that theamous 54th Massachusetts Regiment, one o the rst ofcial black units in theCivil War, walked on their way to ght atMorris Island, two days ater the Battle oSol Legare.

Wilder helped convince the own o

James Island to award $55,000 in grantsto the restoration, eectively jump-startingthe project. But it was his neighbor, ErnestParks, who provided the compellingand passionate argument or saving thebuilding.

Ater his childhood on Sol Legare, Parkswent on to college in ennessee and a career with Bosch in Atlanta beore returninghome in 2005. Over two decades, theLodge had al len into disrepair. HurricaneHugo did the worst damage beore Floydin 1999 let a gaping hole in the roo.

Parks began drumming up supportor the restoration. rademark Propertiesteamed up with the A&E show, FlipTis House, helping to spur interest inthe project. Still, bids or the project

came in around $400,000, a seeminglyinsurmountable sum to raise.

Ten came Michael Riert. Te FollyBeach general contractor whose amilyowns the Beachside Bed & Breakast onEast Erie, estimated that he could completethe job, at cost, or around $100,000.Fundraisers began (and continue) bysimply passing the cup rom house tohouse on the island. Te last such eortraised $600.

We dont worry about how its goingto happen, says Riert. We just say,Its going to happen, and somehow wemanage to pull it o. Its good luck, plainand simple.

Former rademark employee CorieHipp signed on as the primary grant-writer

and marketing guru, along with a handulo island residents and local volunteers.Riert recalls days when hed be hand-sanding the oor or working on the porch, and neighbors would stop by and help ontheir day o. At the very least, everyonehonks and waves.

Restoring a dilapidated structure was nosmall eat. Siding was removed, cleaned, and replaced, and some o the buildingssupport required new wood. Riert wasable to maintain over 50 percent o thebuildings structural value, despite one sideo the building completely caving in.

You dont want to do things 100percent perect, says Riert. You look atit, step back and say, Tats straight.

Inside the building, Parks and his teamhave restored the original chairs, desks, and

urniture, including a hand crank washingmachine built in 1897.One highlight o the new museum is

a diorama o the 54th Regiments MorrisIsland battle, on display or 20 years at theStatue o Liberty. Ater it was moved toFort Moultrie, Parks petitioned to bring itto the Farmers Lodge. Riert recalls himying up with it in the back o a pick-uptruck, beore gazing into an intricate pieceo historical art that hed last seen as a12-year-old visiting New York City.

Although the group had initiallyplanned to reopen the Lodge on thetwo-year anniversary o the project inFebruary, they pushed the date to Aprilto nish a handicap ramp and other smallprojects. Te timing worked out well,

coinciding with the sesquicentennial othe Civil War. Te grand opening is thisSaturday, April 16, and will include are-enactment o the Battle o Sol Legareby the Citadels Living History Society, as

well as a traditional Lowcountry meal andthe presentation o the Palmetto rust orHistoric Preservation award.

As a th generation native o SolLegare, Parks sees the Lodges restoration asa small piece o Americana, preserved andgiven back to the country to remember andenjoy. Te buildings uture will includeevents with storytelling and traditionalmusic and dance, and the second oor hasalready been reserved or several upcomingconerences by a variety o groups.

Te people here lived o the land

and the sea. Tey didnt go looking oranything, explains Parks. Tis Lodgelited up the community, and now thepeople here are supporting the Lodge.

For more inormation, visit www.SolLegare.shutterfy.com or email [email protected].

If You Go: urn onto Sol Legare Roadat the Piggly Wiggly and continue onemile to the Lodge, on the right.

    History

For most Charlestonians, Fort Sumteris considered hallowed ground. Andthat is as it should be.

Te rst recollections o my lie areo the Civil War Centennial in 1961. Atage ve, my amily climbed into the carand headed toward a reenactment o thering on Fort Sumter at the Battery indowntown Charleston. My ather hadpurchased Conederate hats and fags orall o us to cheer on the ghosts o April12, 1861. We parked along the sea wall with dozens o other cars, and watchedas reworks, substituting or cannonballs, whizzed through the early evening sky.Tat day stirred my small soul with apassion or the Civil War that burns evento this day.

General P.G.. Beaurega rd commandedthe Conederate orces in Charleston. Hesent a message to his ormer Artilleryinstructor at West Point and commander

o the Union troops holding Fort Sumter,Major Robert Anderson. Te message read,I am ordered by the Government o theConederate States to demand evacuationo Fort Sumter. All proper acilities willbe aorded or the removal o yourseland command, to any post in the UnitedStates which you may select. Te Flagwhich you have upheld so long and withso much ortitude, under the most tryingo circumstances, may be saluted by youon taking it down.

Major Anderson conerred with hisocers, and they all rejected this oer.Andersons reply was, Gentlemen, i youdo not batter us to pieces, we shall bestarved out in a ew days. As a lielong

soldier and ocer in the United StatesMilitary, he vowed to hold the ort at allcosts.

Te Conederate Government, on theother hand, did not want to take the ortby orce. Gaining the ort by its surrender, without bloodshed and the destructiono a prized ortication, was their goal.Te Secretary o War or the Conederacytelegraphed General Beauregard, stating,Do not desire needlessly to bombard FortSumter. I Major Anderson will state thetime at which, as indicated by him, hewill evacuate, and agree in the meantimethat he will not use his guns against us,unless ours should be employed againstFort Sumter, you are authorized thus to

avoid the eusion o blood. I this, orits equivalent be reused, reduce the ortas your judgment decides to be mostpracticable.

Beauregards next message to Anderson was short and sweet: I you will statethe time o which you will evacuateFort Sumter, we will abstain rom ringupon you. Andersons reply was, We will evacuate Fort Sumter on the 15thinstant, should I not receive prior, to thattime, controlling instructions rom my

    Government or additional supplies.

o the Conederate, this reply wasunacceptable and had too many conditionsattached to it. Conederate ColonelChestnut, who delivered the last messageto Anderson, wrote a blunt rejection o Andersons terms, which he signed andhanded to Major Anderson.

Col. Chestnuts note read: FortSumter, S.C., April 12, 1861, 3:20 A.M.-Sir: By authority o Brigadier GeneralBeauregard, Commanding the ProvisionalForces o the Conederate States, we havethe honor to notiy you that he will openre o his batteries on Fort Sumter in onehour rom this time. Tis message deeplymoved Major Anderson. He escortedColonel Chestnut back to his boat, pressedthe Colonels hand and told him, I wenever meet in this world again, God grantthat we may meet in the next.

Col. Chestnuts boat was then rowed to

nearby Fort Johnson. In the distance, hecould hear the pealing o the bells rom St.Michaels in Charleston, as was ordered byGeneral Beauregard. Te Colonel orderedthe Captain in command o Fort Johnsonto re the signal shell at Fort Sumter that would open the bombardment o FortSumter and the Civil War.

At 4:30 a.m., a ten inch mortar at FortJohnson was red. Its burning use tracedits way across the black sky as it arched

and ell into Fort Sumter. o a cannoneeron Morris Island, the shell looked like arefy. With this rst shot, the deadliest war in American History began inCharleston Harbor.

Fort Sumter was soon encircled by a ringo cannon re. Fortications surroundedher, hurling shot and shell at her romevery direction. Te Conederate batterieswhich were ring on Fort Sumter includedStevens Ironclad Battery, CummingsPoint Battery, Channel Battery, IroncladFloating Battery, Dahlgren Battery,Enlade Battery, Sumter Battery, MountPleasant Battery, Oblique Battery, UpperBattery, Lower Battery, Mortar BatteryNo.1 and No.2, rapier Battery and FortMoultrie.

Hundreds o artillery shells werebeing red on Fort Sumter, and the ortsmasonry walls showered bricks and shellragments throughout the orts interior.

A correspondent rom the CharlestonCourier wrote, the grim ortress oFort Sumter is beleaguered, and aterthe rst shot, Te outline o this greatvolcanic crater was illuminated with aline o twinkling lights; the clustering oshells illuminated the sky above it; theballs clattered thick as hail upon Sumterssides ... and so, at the break o day, amidst

Finally, I can sleep without havingthe lights on in my bedroom! TankGod, I was thinking that might never

happen again ater seeing James Wanslm, Insidious. Not since Poltergeist, theExorcist or Stephen Kings It have I been sorightened ater watching a lm.

Insidious is an old-ashioned ghost storythat is brought to a new level through itsrelentless and distressing pace. With yourtypical run-o-the-mill horror lm, there arealways moments built in so that the viewercan take a breath, unclench their sts, andtake a moment to regroup (or in my case, unwrap mysel rom my boyriends rightside). Normally, the audience member canpick up on when those moments are goingto happen, but Insidious never gives youthat break. Te tension is palpable andnothing is sae. You cannot trust whatsgoing to happen at anytime in this lm. I,by accident, you slip into a sense o calm, thelm will remind you very quickly to neverlet your guard down.

    High-school teacher, Josh Lambert

(Patrick Wilson), and his wie, Renai (RoseByrne), are the average, nice young couple.Tey have two young sons, Dalton and Foster(y Simpkins and Andrew Astor), and a newbaby girl. Like any young amily, they moveinto a modest home hoping or the best, but the boxes are not even unpacked when

things start to unravel. Tings disappearand mysteriously turn up in the spookyattic, Renai hears voices through the baby-monitor, and Dalton takes a minor tumbleand ends up in an unexplained coma.

Once Dalton is back home, thingsproceed to get creepier and more openlymalevolent. Unnerved by the constantharassment, the amily moves, only to ndits not the house that is haunted; its Dalton.Dont worry, I am not going to divulgeanymore o the story, but this is where thestory deepens and a amily history comes tolight.

Tere have been comparisons madebetween this lm and its predecessors suchas Poltergeist and Paranormal Activity. I cansee the point, but Wan brings a ear-inducingresh spin that I ound to be extremelyeective and delightully terriying.

Insidious is a lower budget lm that attimes can be a bit cheesy. Te special eectsremind me o those old spook house ridesat the carnival. Yes, its imitative, gatheringthings rom other movies, but still, Wan

takes this campy old -ashioned ghost storyto a new level o right.

I you like horror ficks, nd a riend tohold on to and be ready or a rightening rideull o bumps and jumps that will leave youdouble-checking where all the light switchesare in your home. Enjoy!

    Dating Follies

Ihave recently been doing a lot opondering about the contract omarriage. I attribute this to many

dierent things: attending so many weddings and wedding-related events, loads o new marriage-related statistics in

the news, and my recent reading materialbeing the biggest culprits. ogether, all othese things have gotten me thinking abouthow much the institution o marriage haschanged in the past ew hundred years. Forthe rst time in the United States history, there is a higher percentage o single parenthouseholds rather than nuclear amiles. Isthis an indicator that a new, independent,ree-thinking America is changing theirmind about what marriage actually means? Is it easible to sign on to a til death doyou part relationship?

Sure, its nice to think o marriage as aunion between a man and woman, whereyou announce your romantic love in ronto God and everyone, dance to cheesymusic, enjoy champagne and cake, and

go on to live happily ever ater. Te truth, however, is that this was not the originalplan.

Now, beore all the newlyweds getupset and as a closet-hopeless-romanticmysel, the eternal optimist inside o mebelieves that this airytale-type o love

absolutely exists and can come true. Mygrandparents are living proo! Tey justcelebrated their 55th wedding anniversaryand are still dripping with just as muchsugary sweet love or each other as whenthey were 16 years old.

Yet the original concept o marriage was nothing like that. Marriage was abusiness arrangement, a way or athers toget more out o daughters than tidy homes, hot meals, and mended clothing. Menessentially shopped around or a womanthey ancied, worked out a price with thepatriarch and took her home. For thehundreds o years that this was the norm, signing up or til death did you partwasnt such a big deal. Chances are i youlived through adulthood, you could havemultiple spouses, anyway. Te smallestinjury could lead to inection or death; asprain, a ever or even a cough could do youin. And in the case o women, pregnancyand childbirth had extremely highmortality rates. Any o these complications

oered up a second chance at marriage. In the past century alone, the average lieexpectancy has more than doubled. Whenyou look at it in those terms, its clear thatthe phrase til death do us part has takenon a whole new meaning; and, in turn, hasbecome a much bigger commitment.

Ten theres divorce. Tere was a paperpublished by scholars rom Harvard, MI,and Boston University called Te Lure oAmbiguity where, ater multiple studies, they ound that the more people knowabout each other, the less they like each

other. Tis could explain why, as peoplelive longer, divorce rates have steadilyincreased.

Te exception to this rule has come in thewake o the recent economic crisis. Tereare new statistics showing that in stateshit hardest by the foundering economyand high unemployment rates, divorcerates have actually decreased. Peoplecannot aord to leave their spouses: healthinsurance, mortgages, and joblessness areliterally orcing couples to stay together. Ithas become such a trend that major newspublications have dubbed the phenomenonsleeping with the enemy. Consideringthat marriage originally began as nothingmore than an economic and nancialarrangement, what we seeing is marriage

returning to its true orm.More and more oten today, our society is

seeing a group reerred to as the committedunmarrieds by such publications as imemagazine. Otentimes, these couples staytogether longer than those who are legallybound. I have one riend who has beenwith her boyriend or more than a decadeand engaged to him or eight years. WhenI asked her about it, she responded that shewas completely in love with her ella, but

still undecided as to whether or not people were meant to be together orever. Teyare an insanely happy couple and at thispoint in the game, they eel that the onlyreason to ll out the paperwork would beor taxes, insurance plans, or other legalrelated issues.

So, is the act o marriage losing itsromantic ideology? Have the words tildeath do us part morphed rom a lovingconviction to be cherished between twopeople into some sort o punishment orthreat? In this modern America, is it more

accurate to say til nancial death nolonger has us dependant on each other andwe can aord to part?

Again, Im not trying to be a cynic here.Instead, Im trying to take a realistic andstatistical point o view. Maybe what weall should do is quit worrying about thatline all together and just appreciate andenjoy our loves or what they are andhowever long they last; be it 20 minutesor 20 years.
