The College and Career Academy, known as the CCA, at both Fishers and HSE high schools provides a unique learning environment for students.

The five-year process of planning the necessary expansion to accommodate the number of students at the high schools explored several possibilities, eventually settling on the CCA as the best option.

The welcome voice of the students aided in the decision to pursue this design element. A social anthropologist followed students around and realized that instructional space could be creative, such as a hallway or stairwell. These nontraditional spaces are popular and create new interactive experiences.

Another key element with the CCA is the leaning towards independent problem solving. “We are a high achieving district, but are our students prepared?” questioned FHS Principal Jason Urban. “It was found that HSE does a great job at course content but was weak with students managing their independence.” When speaking with former students at the university level, many struggled to study in a group. “We sought to increase independence, allowing less reliance on the teacher,” adds Urban.

Traditionally the teacher leads the way, so in order to increase student confidence in problem solving, the “process”-oriented learning has changed. With the layout of the new CCA additions, the shift with the learning model is facilitated.

With lots of glass walls, it’s powerful to witness students sharing in new ways. For instance, English teach Ben Beasley was writing out

the gender stereotypes in Disney movies, and additional students from other classrooms added to it because they saw that on the whiteboard.

“Classes in the CCA are a lot like the other normal classes, but they are also different as well. With the sliding glass walls and the couches and tables in the hallways, students have much more freedom to move around comfortably while they are working,” says FHS Senior Claire Calvert, “Having iPads and laptops for every student makes it easier to access online databases and programs such as Microsoft Word right there in the classroom. I would say that overall, the CCA has had a positive impact on the students at FHS.”

“It has changed their lens, their environment,” shares Urban. “The energy is different within the CCA.”

“Students have a place to go to work where teachers can see them. The small collaborative spaces are working out well for the students – it’s private but still at school,” says Matt Kegley, Principal at HSE High School. “The whole layout was designed around flexibility in the classroom, and we are achieving that. The CCA is meeting our goals in terms of wanting students to become independent learners. Students move from whole group to small groups to individual learning within a small radius.“

The collegiate offerings for dual credit curriculum have greatly expanded. Both HSE Schools have partnerships with many state universities as well as Ivy Tech, J. Everett Light CNA medical center. “Our goal is fifth year readiness, whether that’s college or a trade school,” says Urban. Through Ivy Tech, J. Everett Light CNA medical career options, students who may not want be drawn to college are able to explore workforce options.

And students can leave and attend these other learning centers as part of their high school experience.

“We wish to create a bridge to a student’s future, so part of the curriculum has been expanded and is relevant to their senior year and easing transition to their fifth year,” says Urban.

Community businesses are coming to FHS and HSE looking for interns. Through Media Fuel, students learn digital marketing skills. HSE Schools has their own health center, and for the first time ever, students are interning there. Places like Launch Fishers, Kindred Rehab, Dr. Hanna – oncologist and Shelton Machinery have reached out to hire interns.

“Working at Launch Fishers was amazing!” shares FHS grad and IU Kelley School of Business Freshman Alex Reibel. “I got to meet local entrepreneurs in many diverse fields and learned many of the stories.”

“As the community is hearing about our goals and objectives outside of our walls, they are reaching out to us in order to create new opportunities and creating a unique and new partnership,” says Kegley.

February 12-13From 6-9 p.m., the Nickel Plate Arts is offering “Date” nights for adults. These evenings will feature six art experience stations that couples (any two people) can do together. Cost is $10 per couple per experience or $50 for a couple to participate in all six. Couples can learn to hula hoop, play a dulcimer, create LOVE coasters, make a wood/rebar photo frame, paint their partner and dabble in mixed-media. “He is a completely different kid now. He does his homework after school before I even see him. It changed his life. It changed our whole household.”

These are the words Sheryl Shepherd used to describe the results she saw after her son Grant finished a program at LearningRx. Prior to LearningRx, Grant’s parents, Sheryl and Randall, were in a constant battle to get Grant to do his homework. Grant’s frustration with school work placed a strain on Grant and the whole family. The fact that Grant’s parents always knew he had the ability but felt that something was missing just made the situation even more frustrating.

Grant, like many other 11-year-olds, received good grades in math and some of his other subjects but really struggled with reading. While he could read the written words, Grant’s lack of focus and concentration impaired his ability to comprehend and recall what he had read.

Grant’s difficulties became very apparent as he reached the fourth grade where the amount of homework increased significantly, and he started receiving letter grades. Randall said, “It was a big battle every night to get his homework done.”

The Shepherds even hired two tutors, who were trained educators, just so Grant could get his homework completed. While the tutors helped Grant deal with specific lessons, they did nothing to sharpen his cognitive skills. The Shepherds’ frustration just went on and on unabated throughout the year.

Finally, the Shepherds contacted LearningRx, and Grant started in April. The Shepherds decided to enroll Grant in LearningRx because they had seen first-hand a nephew who had experienced a terrific improvement in his cognitive abilities as a result of the LearningRx program.

After going to LearningRx three nights a week, Grant’s reading ability increased significantly. The reading improvement was not a result of being tutored in reading at LearningRx, but a result of improving cognitive skills that result in greater focus and concentration. Grant’s grades in reading have improved significantly, and his frustration with school has eased considerably.

Recently, Grant did something that he never did before. He chose to read a book on his own. Life is now better for Grant and the whole Shepherd family.

Grant is a talented young athlete and a terrific pitcher. So talented he was chosen from 2,500 boys to be a member of the Game Day USA Team that will be competing in Florida in a few weeks. Some of his games will be televised on ESPN.

An unintended consequence of the training he received at LearningRx is an improvement in Grant’s performance in sports. Grant’s father noticed that the increased focus and concentration that Grant developed to improve his schoolwork has also made Grant an even better baseball player.

Little league teams practicing their fielding skills, high school athletes working on their swing, professional instruction for pitchers – these are just a few of the activities happening inside the Fishers Sports Academy (FSA).

Offering professional instruction, training camps, batting cages, a full-size practice infield and an overlook event/meeting space, the Fishers Sports Academy was built to serve area teams for indoor training and practices.

Recently celebrating their official grand opening, the 14,000 square foot indoor baseball and softball training academy is proud to serve their community.

“Our goal is to not only teach the game, mentor young athletes and promote healthy competition, but to be a valuable community partner,” says Academy General Manager Eric Blakeley who was drafted by the Seattle Mariners out of Indiana

University and played professionally for six years. The coaching roster rounds out with several additional past collegiate champions and professional athletes.

“Sports play such a vital role in developing positive character traits in young men and women alike,” Blakeley said. “Along with other community organizations, our coaches look forward to having the opportunity to provide life lessons in teamwork, dedication and integrity.”

Serving as a hitting and fielding instructor along with Blakeley is Co-Owner Ed Woolwine, a Big Ten Conference Champion outfielder and veteran travel baseball coach. The facility also is co-owned by Beau Brunnemer, a 10-year volunteer and current President of the Fishers-HSE Youth Baseball organization, and Real Estate Developer Kyle Bach, who also is a supporter of Fishers-HSE Youth Baseball.

“My hope in bringing this new amenity to the Fishers area is for FSA to be an additional outreach tool, through a

community-focused mindset, to provide a safe and healthy environment for both serious and recreationally-minded youth to further their athletic and educational goals,” says Brunnemer.

In addition to providing professional hitting, fielding and pitching instruction and off-season indoor team training, Fishers Sports Academy is available to host corporate events, birthday parties and community lock-ins.

“We hope to be a community destination for events, whether it’s an afternoon of corporate team building, an overnight youth group lock-in, a morning Zumba class or any other type of gathering that would appreciate a unique space to hang out in,” shares Brunnemer.

RepuCare Founder, President and CEO Billie Dragoo has an office so heavily decorated with awards and accolades that it appears to be a trophy room at a Hall of Fame museum.

Dragoo is honored to have received every award proudly displayed in her office. When asked about her most coveted achievement or award, Dragoo doesn’t hesitate to say “the Central Indiana Business Hall of Fame Junior Achievement Award I received alongside fellow Laureates David Simon (SIMON Group), Dave P. Lindsey (Defender Direct) and Michael Smith (Anthem) the same year.”

Make no mistake, Dragoo is a champion. She is a celebrated champion of her efforts to help others, namely women business owners. Dragoo’s story is inspirational of course. As a single mom of two young children, she started a business based in her home providing healthcare staffing which has flourished over the years.

But it’s not the struggles she has experienced or a sad tale that defines Dragoo. The truly compelling nature of why crystal trophies litter her office space is simple. It’s Dragoo’s method and her mindset that has brought her success. She didn’t trip the prom queen and throw the PTO moms under the bus; she has simply lived a life of service by reaching out to

help other women around her achieve their dreams.

“You help one woman in business, you help a thousand,” says Dragoo. Her friend, Deborah Collins Stephens, best-selling author and former Silicon Valley venture capitalist, adds. “The ripple effect of helping just one woman cascades to others. The outreach is profound.”

There is still a long way to go with measurable statistics supporting why companies should support diversity in business. Studies show that women-led teams in large companies outperform those led by men. Women-owned businesses give back more to their communities and are found to be more efficient.

When Dragoo was looking for funding to expand her business, she was rejected. “I had a solid pitch deck, and there was not a single institution wanting to invest in my service-based company,” says Dragoo, “until Carol Curran stepped in and put up her own money.”

Carol Curran, CEO of Phoenix Data Corp, created a ripple with her investment in RepuCare, for the money enabled RepuCare to expand and subsequently purchase another woman-owned business. The ripple turned into a wave.

This experience propelled Dragoo to facilitate profound policy change in regards to venture money for women.

Most service-driven companies are owned by women. Finding capital for service-based businesses has been nearly impossible. Dragoo takes credit for the start of the Indiana Diversity Investment Fund as she should.

“I believe that if you are in a position to extend your hand and bring someone forward, you do it,” says Curran. “My investment in Billie’s company enabled her to help someone else directly. We are all proud of that.”

Collins Stephens adds, “Billie has opened doors for so many women in this state. I wish others could operate as she does from a ‘perspective of abundance’ instead of a ‘what’s in it for me?’ mentality. Billie

is the real deal, and I am blessed to have her as a friend!”

Dragoo’s value of other female entrepreneurs cannot be overstated. Mentoring is very important to her, and she feels it is a duty, rather than a choice, for women to assist other women for business success. The wave is gaining momentum.

BASEBALL STANDOUT TRAINS AT FORCE BARBELL

For almost his entire life, HSE senior Andrew Bohm has been playing baseball. Going into his final season at Hamilton Southeastern, the varsity pitcher has been training at Force Barbell to help him prepare for the season as well as MLB drafts.

After being referred to Force Barbell by Nolan Watson, MLB first-round draft pick for the Kansas City Royals, Bohm decided to join in hopes of maximizing his potential for the 2016 season. But in only two months, he has accomplished so much more than off-season preparation.

“[Watson] told me to get in because it would help me a lot,” said Bohm. “Since I joined, I have gained 30

pounds of muscle. I have been throwing a lot better – my arms are a lot more fluid when I am pitching.”

HSE freshman Jayma Ferris and sophomore Valerie Obear are not your typical

athletes. In junior high, both girls began to excel in a sport historically dominated by men – wrestling. Despite facing criticism, confusion and complete shock, Ferris and Obear have proven that wrestling has no gender.

“A lot of girls try wrestling but don’t end up sticking with it because it is a tough sport,” said Ferris. “Some of [the criticism] can put you down, but you can take most of it and put it towards proving them wrong. You can take the criticism and show them that yes, a girl can wrestle.”

As the only females on the high school wrestling team, the girls have pioneered their way into the sport.

“Although we are the only female wrestlers, I feel like I kind of push her,

and she pushes me,” said Obear. “We help each other.”

But being the only girls on the team is not the only thing that the wrestlers have had to overcome. Over the past two years, Obear has torn both of her meniscuses from wrestling. After having invasive surgery to repair the cartilage, she has been working to overcome her injury and accomplish her goals.

“I missed a lot last season [from the injury], so I have really been working on becoming fit and getting my strength up,” said Obear. “Hopefully, I will become varsity.”

Despite only being a freshman, Ferris is pushing to become a part of the varsity roster during her high school wrestling career as well.

“I want to improve a lot this year from last year, and I want to improve a lot next year from this year,” said Ferris. “Junior year, I would like to be varsity and then take it from there.”

But for Obear and Ferris, wrestling is more than just a sport. For them, it is both physical and mental, something that they feel grows them not only as an athlete but as a person.

“You learn so much about yourself,” said Obear. “You push yourself harder than almost any other sport. Wrestling works your whole body and your mind.”

“It matures you and changes your mindset about a lot of things,” added Ferris. “It helps you grow.”

As for the future, both athletes hope to draw more girls into the sport and prove that wrestling is for everyone.

“Nobody really thinks of a girl wrestling until a girl wrestles,” said Obear. “If you like the sport, stay with it.”

While balancing multiple advanced courses including AP Biology, AP Literature and Composition, AP Calculus and AP Seminar, senior Khushboo Chougule still found time to participate in a school sport - tennis.

“I love that I can forget everything and just focus on the strategy of the game,” Chougule said. “Tennis is also such a strategic game that requires both athleticism and a brain. You could be really athletic, but you can easily be outsmarted by an opponent much more athletic than you.”

Chougule first started playing tournaments as a fifth grader after her friends encouraged her to join. She then went on to win multiple tournaments with her teammates, all the while balancing a 4.7 GPA and involving herself in a wide variety of extracurricular activities, from Student Council Vice President and National Honor Society to DECA and

Principal’s Advisory Council.“I think that inherently I do better at school during season than before or after because my mind realizes the need to manage time,” Chougule said. “I procrastinate less, and I don’t become distracted.”

But time management is not the only reason why Chougule chose to play all four years of high school. Her relationship with her team was the main reason she came back year after year.

“[I play tennis because of] the people and the bonding,” Chougule said. “Tennis season is honestly my favorite part of the year, mainly because I’m with all those people.”

Madalyn Kinsey spent her summers at her grandparent’s farm in Fishers. Back in the 1960s, driving from Indianapolis to Fishers seemed like a long journey out into the country. During these visits, Kinsey and her cousins would explore the farm, which included a creek, woods and a cemetery containing a mysterious gravesite for a Civil War soldier.

“As kids, we always wondered about this man’s story,” recalls Kinsey. “I recall being able to view the cemetery off into the distance from the back bedroom window and wondering if we’d see wisps of translucent white rising from the graves when the clock struck midnight.”

It’s not surprising that Kinsey pulled from these childhood memories certain

elements for her coming-of-age Vanessa Mysteries Series. The books feature Vanessa, a 14-year-old city girl who visits her grandparents’ farm during the summer of 1967.

In her first book, “The Ghost of Cheeney Creek,” Kinsey focuses upon a mystery of a nearby abandoned home and its possible ties to a Civil War soldier’s gravesite.

Gatewood is Kinsey’s family name, and her grandparents and other family members owned most of the land north of 96th Street along both sides of Allisonville Road. Her grandparents’ farmhouse was on the northwest area off Allisonville and 106th Street (a portion of their land became what is now the Gatewood subdivision). The cemetery still exists for local snoopers to respectfully explore.

Kinsey’s latest release, “The Mystery of Gatewood Airport,” features the heroine Vanessa back in action to solve another confounding situation, this time involving some strange goings-on at a local airport (Indy Metro). This adventure involves illegal exotic animal smuggling. Vanessa and her friends spy on the airport from a treehouse built near the perimeter and adventure ensues. Such a treehouse existed back in 1967.

Not only did Kinsey pull inspiration from memories of locations from her childhood, but her characters are based on her cousins, one of which is Jeff Gatewood, owner of Allisonville Nursery. The character of Daniel in the books is based on Jeff.

“We had the greatest childhood running around the fields, woods, creek and barn around the farm,” shares Jeff. “It’s fun to see these characters loosely based on what we were and what we did, the places we went to and the music we listened to. Madalyn brings back the whole culture of what it was like growing up in the ’60s, including the mischief we got into.”

Kinsey features nostalgic landmarks that no longer exist, such as the Rainbow Roller Rink, the old Dairy Queen and the ABC Drive-In in Noblesville in addition to several other destinations.

It’s been revealed that the Civil War

gravesite belongs to James Payne, a Civil War veteran. “Fact or Faked,” a show on the Syfy Channel, investigated his grave for the show in 2011. Payne is listed as being a deserter and reportedly haunts the area which the show was unable to debunk after spending several days on-site investing the grave and the cemetery.

“I feel like I am celebrating an era and also Hamilton County and Indianapolis,” shares Kinsey. “I’m also sharing what it was like growing up during the politically and socially tumultuous summer of 1967.”

“The Man Who Defied Gravity” will be the third and final book of the Vanessa Mystery Series trilogy. For 171 years, the YMCA has focused on youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The philanthropic organization doesn’t just bolster bodies; it shapes the future of our community by taking on challenges like the educational achievement gap, adult and childhood obesity and diseases such as the diabetes epidemic.

“Many people don’t realize that the YMCA is a nonprofit organization, and we fundraise,” says Jake Reardon-McSoley, Executive Director at the Fishers YMCA. “I am excited to come to work each day to work towards our mission of awarding over $700,000 in scholarships to 7,200 folks and impacting so many kids and parents each year at Fishers YMCA….One misconception is that Hamilton County is a wealthy place, but actually there are a lot of families living here who face great financial needs.”

Fishers YMCA will host its annual campaign breakfast February 11 from 7:15-8:30 a.m. at 9012 E. 126th St. off Highway 37. YMCA MISSION SAMPLINGSince 2008, the YMCA has led a program called LIVESTRONG as part of the social responsibility mission. It helps cancer victims build and strengthen muscle mass, increase flexibility and endurance and improve confidence and self-esteem. This 12-week program meets two days a week for 90 minutes and offers a caring staff trained to follow American College Sports Medicine and American Cancer Society exercise guidelines.

“LIVESTRONG focuses on healing and hope and is a very powerful program,” says Reardon-McSoley. “We’re proud to provide this program completely free for cancer survivors. This is important since we know the bankruptcy rate is two and a half times higher for cancer victims than it is for the rest of the community.”

In addition, the YMCA offers a Preschool Program to help offset the achievement gap; it’s available at a discounted rate and follows the USA Creative Curriculum model. This state-of-the-art course plan uses computers and focuses on four types of development: social/emotional, physical, cognitive and language. Of the 131 children involved with this curriculum, one out of four receive a financial scholarship.

Finally, to help address the diabetes epidemic, the YMCA has organized the Diabetes Prevention Program along with the help of the IU School of Health. Though it was first piloted at the Fishers branch, it has grown nationwide due to its success.

The goal of this program is to reduce one’s body weight by seven percent while increasing physical activity by 150 minutes per week. The best part of this process is that participants can work with others in a group setting to help support each other. They can make friends as they lose weight, boost their energy, reduce their risk for diabetes and improve their health.

According to the National Institute of Health, the YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program not only reduces the number of new cases of Type 2 Diabetes by 58 percent overall but also by 71 percent in people over 60.

The neighborhood tire and auto store just east of Olio on 96th Street now has a new name and face. Formerly Cooper Tire, Neal Tire and Auto Service bought the store last year by adding it to their 26 other retail locations.

With its 27 retail stores and six distribution warehouses (operating under the name Ben Tire) in Indiana, Illinois and Kentucky.
