As we reach a certain age, people mistakenly feel that having joint stiffness and pain are a normal part of the aging process, but delaying treatment can actually cause further damage to your joints. Whether you have suffered a traumatic accident, have arthritis or a sports-related injury, you owe it to yourself to find a highly-skilled orthopedic joint specialist. Indiana University Health Saxony Hospital Orthopedics & Sports Medicine offers a Joint Replacement Program that is nationally and internationally recognized for its care, skill, research and positive patient outcomes.

COMPREHENSIVE CARE, BEST OUTCOMESDr. Michael Meneghini, the Director of Orthopedics & Joint Replacement at IU Health Saxony Hospital and also an Associate Professor of Orthopedic Surgery with IU School of Medicine, explains that the focus of their practice is to provide a high level of patient coordination so that patients can focus on their recovery. “We discuss every patient and offer the highest level of coordination of care unlike most places,” he says. That means that from the initial consultation to everyone involved in your care, whether it be the therapist, social worker, internists, surgeons,

anesthesiologists and nurses participates, in weekly meetings. Patients do not have to repeat their story to every caregiver because they have already discussed it before you even arrive. This not only helps the patient experience but also minimizes errors and assists in assuring positive patient outcomes.

TEACHING THE NEXT GENERATIONDr. Meneghini says, “Patients from throughout the country come to us for routine first time hip and knee replacements but also for corrective surgeries for procedures that were previously done and have not had a good outcome or their device is not working as it should be.” This customer-focused practice is obviously resonating with patients because their practice attracts patients from throughout the United States with the heaviest concentration from Indiana, Ohio, Illinois and Kentucky.

With this level of specialty, Dr. Meneghini states that the surgeons have “chosen to be super specialists in hip and knee replacement.” Their commitment is so strong, he states, “If we are not performing those two surgeries, we are doing research, and we are the only fellowship program in the state of Indiana.” The fellowship

program is growing with 80 applicants from all over the U.S. vying for only two spots. One applicant from Switzerland has chosen Saxony over Mayo Clinic and Johns Hopkins, solidifying their growing national reputation.

NATIONALLY RECOGNIZED PROGRAM IN YOUR BACKYARDWith four surgeons and fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeons, the program is also being recognized nationally and internationally. Saxony is ranked #2 in the United States by the UHC (University Healthsystem Consortium) database–which includes world-renowned hospitals such as Mayo Clinic and Johns Hopkins–for length of stay. The key outcomes that the government and insurance companies are looking for are length of stay, meaning how long you stay in the hospital, and whether you have to be readmitted. And while it is important to get patients back to their normal schedules as quickly as possible, it must be done safely to ensure that their patients don’t return to the hospital due to complications.

Imagine being able to live at your highest level of well-being. To be physically strong, nutritionally sound and spiritually fed allows a woman to thrive and perform at her best for everyone in her life that is counting on her. That is what Coach Roz Harris and Kelli Price offer women at Fit Chicks!

Fit Chicks fitness studio is celebrating four years of helping women in Fishers go from frustrated and confused about how to get their fitness and nutrition on track to having a personalized wellness program designed just for them that allows them to confidently move towards a sustainable lifestyle of wellness, fitness and better overall health.

Coach Roz and Kelli Price understand how overwhelming it can seem when a woman knows she wants to look and feel her best but doesn’t know where to start or if it’s really even possible to get there. The journey to wellness can seem really daunting if you feel like you are doing it on your own. After taking control of her own fitness and nutrition story and creating a sustainable healthy lifestyle for herself 15 years ago, Coach Roz lost over 90 pounds and has maintained that weight loss by making proper nutrition, targeted fitness and creating a community of support her daily priority.

Fit Chicks is different from your average gym or fitness studio. Unlike big gyms where you are on your own to create and maintain your fitness programs and hope you get it right, Coach Roz and her team at Fit Chicks are with you for every step of the process. You don’t have to remember what weight you should do, number of reps for each exercise or anything else. The Fit Chicks coaches are truly your personal trainer and are there to guide you through each workout step-by-step.

They are there to structure your fitness program, guide your customized nutrition plan and most importantly provide the support and encouragement you need as you strive to create the best version of yourself through fitness, nutrition and personal development.

If you are ready to stop being disappointed by quick fixes and programs that don’t get you where you want to be, it’s time to take control of your fitness, nutrition and overall wellness by stopping in at Fit Chicks and getting the free studio pass or find it online.

Coach Roz invites you to start your transformation today. When asked how Fit Chicks works, her answer really made it clear.

“All you have to do is get the free studio pass, schedule a workout, visit us and begin your transformation. It doesn’t have to be confusing or complicated.”

Eleven Fifty Academy has added a Fishers campus, located inside Launch Fishers.

Recently Eleven Fifty Academy President John Qualls was asked how coding impacts his life. He answered the question by listing all the items that surround him in his living room. Qualls listed Wi-Fi, HVAC, lighting, his television, phone, iPad, computer, remote controls, his children’s electronic toys, the processes that created his chair and all of the other furniture in the room along with how the goods were transported from factory to retail to his car. The list went on and on…

Qualls provided an answer that defines how coding impacts our daily lives: it makes the world run.

This impact is being felt in every industry, creating opportunities for workers to enhance their skills and marketability in a dynamic world where most of the jobs of the future have yet to be created. Entrepreneur Scott Jones identified this demand early on, creating Eleven Fifty Academy.

The demand for coding continues to increase exponentially, giving coding schools like Eleven Fifty Academy the opportunity to help individuals skill up, pivot or simply expand their skill set to better understand the tech world in which we live.

“The culture of entrepreneurship at Launch Fishers supports the ideal location for our expansion,” says Qualls.

Recently, Eleven Fifty Academy and Ivy Tech announced a partnership that grants 12 credit hours to Ivy Tech students for courses offered by Eleven Fifty Academy. The courses include Java, iOS, .Net, JavaScript and Android. “While these seem like foreign languages, they are definitely the language of the future, and that future starts now,” says Jenn Aikins, Director of Learning for Eleven Fifty Academy.

Eleven Fifty Academy began over a year ago with one-week intensive courses, providing an immersive experience for coder education. “After one year, they went back to the drawing board and looked at the pros and cons of the experience they had been offering. Based on feedback, Eleven Fifty Academy created some dynamic changes to the program and how it could be structured to better serve our students,” says Tiffany Trusty, Eleven Fifty Academy Instructor. “I am excited about the changes, and the students will definitely experience a complete coding experience.”

“We reflected on what we did really well, which is the skill up and

skill enhancement classes. The soft skills were something that students were cobbling together to complete a learning path for themselves,” says Aikins. “The nine weeks supports a blended curriculum of the immersive coding experience with job readiness skills, so that students are ready to implement their knowledge.”

The course, as it is now organized, meets the demand for graduating well-rounded coders. Hoosiers, by nature, have a reputation for being humble, hard workers. Employers weighed in with their needs, and Eleven Fifty Academy has stepped up to fill in the gaps.

“Every day I speak with someone at a company who is looking to hire people with coding skills,” says Aikins. “It is exciting to know that we can help them. These companies can hire our graduates.”

“We are excited to welcome Eleven Fifty Academy into the Launch Fishers ecosystem. We see their mission as additive to our long-term vision of building a smart, vibrant and entrepreneurial city,” shares Launch Fishers Founder John Wechsler.

The impact of coding is everywhere. Courses are open to coders of all ages.

Allisonville Garden & Home owner Jeff Gatewood and his team are celebrating four decades of beautification.

A keystone business in Fishers, Allisonville Garden & Home (formerly known as Allisonville Nursery) is commemorating its milestone anniversary with a party on June 30, corresponding with the Fishers Freedom Festival and this year’s Bicentennial celebration.

Jeff ’s father Carl Gatewood along with Jeff ’s grandparents owned a vast amount of land along Allisonville Road. Carl was a farmer, excavator and contractor who built roads and streets. However, Carl is probably best known for building the Indianapolis Metropolitan Airport. Jeff and his older brothers helped with the construction of the runways and hangar.

In 1976 after Jeff quit college, his father suggested they drive up to Michigan and buy a truck load of evergreens to sell off the lot across the street. That lot was located on

the corner of Allisonville and 106th Street and was part of the Gatewood property.

“I thought I would be a rancher or a history teacher,” shares Jeff who went to college for a year and a half in Montana. “I couldn’t think of anything that would be fun prior to knowing about this [horticulture] industry.”

As a result of its close proximity to the airport, planes were a concern. During their time at that location, three planes made unscheduled landings on the property. Fortunately no one was injured. In 1985, the business relocated to its current address on 4.6 acres.

“My dad helped get the business started, and I love what I am doing,” says Jeff. “It’s fun, and I still enjoy coming to work every day.”

The business has grown (pun intended) over the years. Seasonally, they average over 50 employees. Landscape plantings is still a great deal of what they do. While there is no hardscape offerings, the Allisonville Garden & Home team is amazingly well-equipped

to assist with designing needs. “We still plant a lot of trees,” says Jeff.

Jacques Schindler has been with Jeff the longest. Jacques was a Chatard student at the time he began working with Jeff at Allisonville Nursery. “I lived in Glendale and have no idea how I found this place,” says Jacques with a smile.

He has been working with Allisonville Garden & Home for almost as long as Jeff has been in business. “It’s been over 38 years. I recall being at Purdue and changing my major from meteorology to horticulture, and I called Jeff and asked him if he would hire me after I graduate if I got that degree. He said yes, but the joke was at the time, Jeff was just hoping to be able to keep up with expenses and wanted to hire me but had no idea if he could keep that promise. Things have worked out well.”

“Jacques is a great example of our intrinsic value to our customers,” shares Jeff. “Jacques is a horticulture expert, loves what he does and is part of our strong foundation.”

14 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / JUNE 2016 / atFishers.com

There are other employees like Jacques that bring an immense amount of experience to their positions. Allisonville Garden & Home has employees who have worked with cataloging plants at the Smithsonian and National Botanical Gardens, yet they are all approachable individuals. Those who are new to gardening find that the staff at Allisonville Garden & Home speak their language and are happy to help. There is even a full-time landscape designer on staff.

“We are unique in that we have one of the most experienced staff in the Midwest and have by far the best team of any garden shop,” says Jeff confidently. “We pride ourselves in customer service, and we prove it with every interaction.”

Watching the trends in the industry, Allisonville Garden & Home is ahead of the curve. With 7,000 square feet of retail space, they offer an impressive array of interior design elements in addition to their beautiful plant selection for outdoors. The

name change evolved as their business has shifted to be more holistically about the home, both inside and out. The retail gift shop features home decor and beautiful accent pieces in addition to indoor plants and furnishings.

“We will always be a garden shop, but over the years, we wished to offer more, and with our clientele being predominantly female, we have catered to the market," says buyer Mary Wildhardt. "Being a seasonal retailer, we completely transform the interior gift shop a few times a year which feels like a new grand opening each season. It’s great fun!”

Allisonville Garden & Home sees the trends that are driven by what people are seeing online. For instance, the once-popular container workshops have evolved into easy, simple projects where more customers want to buy them pre-done.

“In many instances, we sell the garden,

not the gardening,” says Jacques. “Some clients are still wishing to know how to do it themselves, but we accommodate all customers based on their time, need and design aesthetic.”

In keeping up with the digital age, Allisonville Garden & Home has added online tree sales. Their website, bowerandbranch.com, enables customers to order any tree not commonly held in stock and allows for pick up at Allisonville Garden & Home. “We are a part of the first nationwide network of gardening centers,” says Jeff. This enables customers to buy specialty trees and still have the best quality installation service with the Allisonville Garden & Home experts.

“We are a destination location,” says Jeff. “We have many clients that drive a long distance to come here to shop. We have one client from L.A. who comes to Indianapolis on business regularly and always adds us to her agenda.”

14 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / JUNE 2016 / atFishers.com atFishers.com / JUNE 2016 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / 15

Every item that Allisonville Garden & Home sells is hand-picked. Jeff and Jacques travel to Oregon and places where they are able to see the farms where the product is grown and how it’s cared for. Jeff ’s wife Nancy as well as Mary are the buyers for the interior design items, and they travel across the country on buying trips doing much of the same selection process.

“I love what I do,” shares Mary who is an interior designer. “Guests may walk through just to find inspiration for their home. We have a mix of traditional and conventional, but also items that are edgy at all price points. We’ve developed a man’s gift section too. Between the gardens and the interior decor, we create lifestyles for our customers.”

Over the last few years, Allisonville Garden & Home has played host to a variety of events including a Horticulture Couture fashion show which was held in May with partner Dottie Couture and their popular Holiday Open House in November.

“We host a variety of events, from jazz and blues to a fun annual fashion show featuring not only fashions in clothing, but also with plants,” shares Scott Bardach, Marketing Director for Allisonville Garden & Home. “We take a lot of pride in our events. This is an opportunity for the community to come together. After our anniversary party in June, we have a Blues, Brews & BBQs night in July. It’s an amazing experience to be here and enjoy music, food and drink among our beautiful gardens.”

Ranked in the Top 50 Garden Centers in the country, Allisonville Garden & Home is keeping things fresh.

“To be a really good gardening center is not easy,” says Jeff who makes it look easy. “There is a lot that goes into it: the ambience, the cleanliness, the offerings, the staff and their knowledge, the product. Our secret ingredient is a mix of all of these things.”

The true secret ingredient is not a secret: everyone at Allisonville Garden & Home loves what they do and will be celebrating anniversaries for decades to come. Visit allisonvillegarden.com for more information.

Alex Koenig was the subject of a LearningRx Business Spotlight story in the June 2013 issue of the Fishers Community Newsletter. Many things have changed since then. The magazine is now called the Fishers Magazine, Alex is now 10 years old and in the fourth grade and due directly to the remarkable results Alex’s mother, Heather, saw in her daughter after completing the Learning Rx program Heather now owns the Learning Rx office.

In the 2013 story, Heather described Alex before the Learning Rx experience as follows: “At school and home, Alex was experiencing a kind of data disconnect. She would listen as her teacher or gymnastics coach rattled off instructions, but then finish only part of a task. This processing malfunction led to confusion, followed by embarrassment and acting out in class.”

After Alex completed the Learning Rx program, Heather noted in the 2013 story, the changes she saw in Alex’s cognitive skills. “The teacher now knows she gets the full set of instructions. The skills were already there, she just needed to get to them.”

The important thing to understand is that the improvement Heather saw in Alex in 2013 has remained with Alex today. According to Heather, “Today, Alex’s grades are strong and she is learning concepts that

she would have never been able to absorb if we had not completed the LearningRx training. While her report cards are good, more importantly, she understands information and is able to remember it. Alex now has the confidence that whatever the challenge, she can do it. Learning and homework take less than half the time than it used to so she has more free time to do fun things and be a kid. She feels proud of herself and her accomplishments. I’ve never heard her say, “I’m just stupid,” again. Our family dynamics at home changed dramatically. Because Alex is now able to understand and process information, she no longer gets angry easily which means our home is more peaceful.”

After Heather became the new owner of LearningRx, she gave Alex another cognitive skills assessment to see where her skills were. Heather noted, “ I was amazed to see that her cognitive skills, like memory and processing speed, had continued to increase 3 years out of her program. I now know that she will be able to reach any goal she puts her sight on for her career and college. If we had done nothing, she would still be struggling and, by this time, she would probably be giving up in frustration.”It’s not just Heather that has seen the changes in Alex. According to Alex, “LearningRx has made me feel confident about myself. I feel smarter than before and I can remember things I learn and when

Mom asks me to do things. I understand things now so I don’t have to feel mad anymore. I don’t feel stupid anymore. Now I can be a Veterinarian”.

What makes LearningRx different from traditional tutoring and what convinced Heather to buy the LearningRx office is that the training clients receive at LearningRX fundamentally changes the way they process information and so it continues to help them long after the program is finished. Rather than tutoring on a particular subject, the LearningRx program provides a cognitive framework that people can use for the rest of their lives.

According to Heather, “Many learning problems are caused by inefficiencies in how the brain actually processes information, things like memory attention and processing speed. We aren’t tutoring which will only offer temporary help if there are underlying cognitive deficiencies. We are brain trainers offering a solution to learning.”

As mentioned earlier, Heather was so impressed with what LearningRx did for her daughter, Alex, she bought the business. Heather and her staff have a real passion for helping people who have learning and reading struggles. When you choose to get help through LearningRx, you get the same life changing solution that Heather provided for her daughter back in 2013.

TALBOT STREET ART FAIR

June 11-12 Herron-Morton Place Saturday: 10am-6pm Sunday: 10am-5pm talbotstreet.org Find on

The Talbot Street Art Fair is the longest running outdoor art fair in central Indiana. Since its beginning in 1956, organizers have strived to make each year better than before.

Celebrating this year its 61st year, the fair features over 250 artists both locally and from across the United States. The artists converge on Talbot Street between 16th and 20th Streets to present their work in many mediums. These include sculpture, glass, painting, jewelry, photography, ceramics, wood, printmaking, mixed media and fiber.

The host neighborhood, Herron-Morton Place, invites several food venues to the site, so refreshments can be purchased while

viewing the art. This is a family-friendly event, and as always, the admission is free!

The fair will be held, rain or shine. Since most artists travel with solid tent protection, this allows the event to master the weather. Many good conversations have been held in artists’ tents during a rain shower.

This year’s fair will be held June 11-12. Hours on Saturday are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Hours on Sunday are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Talbot Street Art Fair provides scholarship programs to various educational institutions in the fine art disciplines.

For more information about the fair, please visit talbotstreet.org.

“Courtney is a wonderful mom to four sweet children of her own. However, I am nominating her because of her role as second mom to many kids. Many of Courtney’s friends (including myself) have children who have been the beneficiary of Courtney’s love. Although she has a full house, she often invites our children to join for trips to Sky Zone, tumbling, craft days, science experiments and more. From days of fun to math and science tutoring, 'Ms. Courtney' is mom to an extended group of young neighbors, school and cheer friends, rugby friends and wrestling buddies. She has created a strong sense of community by bringing families together who June have not otherwise met. I admire her spirit and her love of encouraging children to laugh and grow!”

Just over a year and a half ago, Jesse and Gizelle Webber bought a pool table for their finished basement. With the cold weather, all three of their boys enjoyed the pool table, but it was their middle son, Matthew, who took to trick shooting after watching a video his dad, Jesse, showed him from YouTube.

“The video was of trick shot world champion Florian ‘Venom’ Kohler,” shares Matthew who became obsessed with performing trick shots. His older brother, Steven, helped him post his own videos to YouTube.

Last July, Florian “Venom” Kohler shared one of Matthew’s YouTube posts on his Facebook page, resulting in a viral video which has received over 96 million views. Yes, that is correct: 96 million views. To date, Webber’s videos have accumulated in excess of 200 million views.

A couple weeks after the first viral video, a former neighbor of the Webber’s called Gizelle and told her that Matthew was on ESPN’s feature, “Highly Questionable.” The hosts of “Highly Questionable” could not come up with anything negative to say. “We are a rather private family,” says Gizelle who was surprised to discover the ESPN coverage. The start to Matthew’s freshman year at Fishers High School was unique. Matthew spent the second week of school in Germany. He and his parents were flown over for Matthew to appear on a German TV show called “Super Kids.”

“It was fun. They had three pool tables set up on a stage, and I went table to table, performing tricks. I had headphones on, and there was an awkward delay in the interview due to the language translation,” says Matthew.

Matthew has experienced quite the media

blitz with interviews by MTV, Sneaky Pete Mafia Magazine, IndyStar and WISHTV. His picture has appeared on GQ. He was also invited to the “Steve Harvey Show” and last November was flown to Hollywood to be featured on “Little Big Shots” which aired May 1, 2016, on NBC and set a record as the most viewed series premiere.

In March, Matthew won two out of four competitions in Chicago. There are no age brackets within the trick shot circuit, and the matches he’s competed in thus far have been against adults. There are some competitions held in bars where minors are not allowed, but for most of the main competitions, Matthew, who is 15 years old, has been welcomed into the fray.

A trick shot competition begins with a lag, which is when both competitors hit the ball closest to the opposite rail. The winner sets up the first trick, and each person has three tries to successfully execute the trick.

TRICK SHOT EXPERTMATTHEW "THE STINGER" WEBBER

26 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / JUNE 2016 / atFishers.com

Matthew’s nickname, “The Stinger”, was a name suggested by his trick shot peers. Gizelle believes it was World-Ranked Champion Will “The Gentleman” Deyonker who was the one who first suggested it.

Recently, Matthew held an exhibition at a new Boys and Girls Club in Indianapolis. He’s hoping to book more exhibitions this summer. Currently, his next one is July 9 in Bloomington.

When asked what he wants to do when he grows up, Matthew replies, “I’d love to perform trick shots and travel all over the world shooting pool.”

Matthew’s sponsors include Jacoby Custom Cues, Grind’n Clothing Company, the World Artistic Pool Players Association, Marty Carey JumpQ, Sneaky Pete Mafia, Orner Billiards and Cyborg Tips. You can follow Matthew on Facebook, Instagram and YouTube.

DEER CREEK

28 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / JUNE 2016 / atFishers.com

Aims to Reach Restaurants, Bars &

Liquor Stores

Writer / Matt Keating . Photographer / Brian Brosmer

DEER CREEKB R EW E Ry

If you want to know more about brewing, Jeff Eaton is the man to talk to.

Eaton co-owns the new Deer Creek Brewery at 17661 Cumberland Rd. in Noblesville with his new business partner, Eric Smith. He also owns Barley Island at 639 Connor St. in Noblesville with his wife Linda.

“I came up with the idea of opening Deer Creek Brewery and featuring whiskey barrels in our bar area after visiting distilleries in Kentucky,” Eaton said. “It really appealed to me, and I know it will have the same appeal for other people.”

Eaton views Deer Creek Brewery as a sister company for Barley Island.

“We have had a very successful, 16-year run at Barley Island, but it is really seen as a restaurant,” Eaton said. “We created Deer Creek Brewery to get our brews in more diverse locations, such as restaurants, bars, liquor stores and other locations.”

Barley Island was first launched in December 1999.

“Barley Island has had a great year, and we are really hoping for the same with Deer Creek Brewery,” Eaton said during a tour of his facility. “We will be doing a lot of canning, bottling and distribution of kegs at Deer Creek. We will also be having the beers canned by mobile canning companies. We are very excited about this. A lot of our customers have already been asking about it.”

The four-pack bottles will be available in August.

Eaton noted that Deer Creek Brewery’s name is an homage to the former Deer Creek Music Center, which is now called Klipsh Music Center.

“At Barley Island, we renamed one of our porters as Deer Creek Porter,” he said.

“It was a big hit, so I wanted to do something else with the name again.”

Eaton, who used to work at Roche Diagnostics in the Global Marketing and Hospital Glucose business, said the tasting room at Deer Creek Brewery was opened on Nov. 25, 2015, the day before Thanksgiving. The grand opening was May 21, 2016.

“The grand opening will be family friendly and will be a benefit for the Hamilton County Humane Society,” Eaton noted.

Deer Creek Brewery, a 13,185-square foot facility, features several drinks with clever names, including year-round drinks such as RyeFly Rye IPA, Deerfly IPA and Cork County Red Cream. There are blends with names such as Shakedown County, Deer County and Shady Shakedown.

“We have been able to triple our brewing

capacity, and we will be able to have a 20-barrel brewing system,” Eaton stated. “We also have a large bottling and packaging production line.”

Deer Creek serves pizza, hot pockets and Jalapeno cheese pretzels. They also take orders for food to be delivered by El Palenque Mexican restaurant.“We offer very minimal food here, but we are not competing with the restaurants, which helps us get our products into their restaurants,” Eaton said.

Brewery tours are also offered, and a shuttle service is provided by The Brewline to take concert goers to select Klipsh Music Center events.

“We receive a lot of business from people just driving by, seeing the sign and stopping in,” Eaton said. “We have had a nice mix of new people we have just met and are also loyal customers from Barley Island.”

Matt Keating is an instructional assistant and tutor at Amy Beverland Elementary and a freelance writer. He is also Matthew McConaughey’s stunt double. He has won

three Society of Professional Journalists awards. He previously worked for The Indianapolis Star, NUVO Newsweekly and MZD Public Relations.

S.P.O.R.T.S, or Southeastern Program of Recreational Team Sports, is an organization in Fishers that aims at giving youth the opportunity to be part of recreational but competitive sports teams that foster leadership and promote character development as well as overall fitness. This organization is private and nonprofit, but nonetheless, it gives the youth in the Hamilton Southeastern area an immense opportunity to get involved with a sport and hopefully create a lifelong passion for that sport in the long run.

“S.P.O.R.T.S leagues provide a great community service. Specific skills and rules are taught about individual sports, hopefully leading to a love of the game for later in life,” said Executive Director of S.P.O.R.T.S., Lynda Carlino. “Those participating and their families form a sense of community and fun. This is often where kids as well as parents meet their best friends, building friendships that last for years.”

One of the most popular sports that S.P.O.R.T.S has to offer is youth soccer which attracted 1,156 children of all ages, Pre-K all the way to high school, in the spring of 2015. The teams are led by over 175 volunteer coaches who teach the fundamentals of soccer and coach weekly games.

Along with the coaches, the S.P.O.R.T.S Youth Soccer Board of Directors is also 100 percent volunteer-led. Consisting of an Executive Team, grade division commissioners and more focused positions including Fields Director, Director of Coaching, Equipment Coordinator and Marketing Director, the Board welcomes any volunteer ready and able to help

S.Y.S., or S.P.O.R.T.S Youth Soccer, plan a successful fall soccer season this year.

About to begin its fourth year as the most popular community-run youth soccer program in Fishers, S.P.O.R.T.S Youth Soccer decided to put a more specific focus on weekly Life Skills. Executive President, Alyssa Anderson along with Vice President Marc Emenhiser worked to develop six weeks of essential core life skills that will help the youth develop positive characters. Coaches lead five minute weekly chats with their players about skills such as respect, leadership, motivation, listening and determination. Weekly goals are set, and each week, coaches award players for improvement and achievement in the specific skill assigned to that week.

Katherine Wellington’s son Ezra first joined S.Y.S. in the fall of 2015. She loved the character development program and how it provided ways for Ezra to interact with his teammates in a positive way while allowing him to learn communication skills

that would last him a lifetime. “For the first time, he was able to consistently recognize how his positive behavior impacted his peers. I have witnessed his competence and confidence increase,” Katherine said. “This soccer season has grown his social skills as well as his physical skills. His pride in himself is unmistakable.”

For more information about S.P.O.R.T.S Youth Soccer and how to join in on any sport, visit hsesports.org. Registration for fall soccer is currently open.

S.P.O.R.T.S. Youth Soccer is sponsored by Goldfish Swim School, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Bounce U, Fishers Magazine and Awards-R-Us and would like to thank them for sponsorships and commitment to the program. S.P.O.R.T.S. Youth Soccer is also accepting new sponsorships for the fall season.

SCHOLARSHIP ATHLETE OF THE

MONTH

JULIA

ANGL

ER

Writer & Photographer / Keeley Miller

Finishing up his first season on the high school track team, HSE freshman Julian Spangler is rounding up an outstanding first year. While competing on the school’s cross country and track teams, Spangler also has maintained a staggering 5.124 grade point average, juggling multiple honors and AP courses.

“It’s really a balance,” said Spangler. “Once I get home from practice, I start on my homework and get it done, so I can have some time for myself.”

Spangler began running in elementary school in the hopes of staying fit and meeting new people. Now Spangler competes in the 800m and the mile events for track and conditions in the summer and winter for the track and cross country seasons.

“I like distance [running] because you have to work for it and keep practicing because once you stop, you lose it all and have to restart,” said Spangler. “Most of my friends are in track, and I like running, so it kind of worked out.”

For the rest of the season, Spangler hopes to finish strong and keep running until he transitions to summer cross country conditioning.

The HSE Mascot Monthly Scholarship Athlete of the Month is sponsored by Chef Suzanne who will deliver a catered meal and plaque to the Spangler family during the month of June. Great work, Julian!
