One-time Fall Creek Elementary teacher Anna Shults is taking on her biggest undertaking yet: opening her own free, public charter school for students in Grades K-5!

Construction for Ace Preparatory Academy Charter School (“ACE Prep”) is underway at the 26,000 square foot abandoned office building on Hillside Avenue near 54th and College in Indianapolis’s Broad Ripple area on the border of IPS and Washington Township.

“It is a lot of work. Creating a school where lives are changed shouldn’t be easy, but I’m excited and honored to have such an incredible opportunity within the community!” says Shults who has been teaching her entire career and says she’s an educator at her core.

“As a child, I used to play school in my basement for hours mimicking my own teachers,” laughs Shults. “Teaching was just something I was meant to do.”

Shults spent 12 years as an elementary teacher in Hamilton Southeastern Schools and was honored as Indiana’s 2007 State Teacher of the year (she was also a candidate for National Teacher of the Year

in 2008), and the experience actually sent her career in a new direction.

Teacher of the Year winners are given a sabbatical from the classroom for a year to talk to teachers statewide. “I’ve never been comfortable with the idea of leaving the classroom,” says Shults. “But the experience really opened my eyes to what goes on in other classrooms. I saw firsthand this belief felt by many that zip code determines a child’s destiny, but a solid foundation in the early grades can help any child soar no matter what where the student lives.”

Following her year of travels, Shults returned to her classroom, only to step away a year later for an opportunity to shape elementary reading initiatives at the Indiana Department of Education. She was then sought after by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation for a yearlong opportunity to lead the Foundation’s body of work pertaining to empowering and celebrating teacher-leaders.

Shults also became a part of Building Excellent Schools, a national non-profit that trains high capacity individuals to design, found, lead and sustain high performing charter schools in communities where schools have a history of struggling.

Today 40-year-old Shults is the founder of ACE Preparatory Academy Charter School (an acronym for Academics, Character and Excellence which was approved by the Indiana Charter School Board earlier this year). The free, college preparatory school will open August 1, 2016, with 72 kindergartners and 72 first graders and grow one grade level per year thereafter until they serve Grades K-5.

“I am wholeheartedly committed to the community we will serve and the students and families that call the Midtown area home,” says Shults. "This is the work that gets me out of bed in the morning and the work that keeps me up at night.”

ACE Prep is currently enrolling students in grades K-1. For more information on ACE Prep, you can visit aceprepacademy.org or contact Founder Anna Shults at [email protected].

SPECIALIST GLENN KANT

Writer & Photographer / Kara Reibel

Celebrating their 12th anniversary in business, Aquarium Service and Design, Inc. creates custom aquariums, utilizing a thoughtful design process. They also provide maintenance and service to saltwater (and some freshwater) aquariums throughout Central Indiana. While they will service freshwater tanks, owner Glenn Kant’s specialty is saltwater reef tanks.

Kant’s love of aquatic life began as kid. “I got my first aquarium when I was 7 years old and had multiple tanks of fish in my bedroom growing up,” shares Kant. “Aside from my college years, I’ve always maintained a few tanks."

An avid scuba diver, Kant’s passion for fish and saltwater aquariums poured over until 1998 when he changed careers.

“I was ready for major life changes, and a new career was part of that,” says Kant. He went to work for an aquarium company,

and after a few years, he ventured out on his own.

There are many benefits to having an aquarium at home. “Many times, an aquarium replaces your TV,” shares Kant. “I have so many people, including doctors’ offices, who place a tank where a television would normally be. In an office setting, an aquarium provides a sense of calm, and it gets the patient’s mind off of why they are there. The same is said for having one in a home. Aquarium owners sit in front of it and stare at the fish and corals for de-stressing.”

A custom saltwater reef tank by Aquarium Service and Design includes a custom design tank, stand and canopy. However, the most important element is the custom design of the filtration system and adequate lighting. Kant fabricates his own filters and offers customized woodworking. Many times, Kant and his company are called in to clean, fix and improve existing tank systems.

Kant’s passion for building aquariums extends into working with designers and builders to create ones built into walls for

homes, not just businesses. Kant adds, “This is my passion. I want every coral, starfish and fish to live happily and give them the best life possible in captivity.”

As part of Kant’s business, he quarantines livestock, meaning he holds all animals in his holding systems until he is sure they are healthy, eating and ready for placement in their new environment.

“An aquarium is a complex and sensitive ecosystem,” says Kant. “Many people spend a good deal of money on a tank only to realize that they have bought inferior equipment for their intended vision.”

People invest in an aquarium, just as they do with any pet. It’s Kant’s experience that most of his clients just want to watch their fish eat but don’t want to clean the aquarium. He offers monthly, weekly and bi-weekly maintenance plans to help keep their investment, and their fish, healthy.

Kant, while not a vegan, does not eat seafood. He says, “I’d rather dive with them and view them in their natural habitat.”

W hen Fishers resident Ambre Crockett began creating her own unique body products for her

massage clientele, word quickly spread, and now Ambre Blends is in over 400 retailers internationally.

Ambre Crockett started her natural body products business, well, naturally. After graduating from Lawrence Central High School, Crockett attended the Healing Arts Institute in Colorado. While she was there, she not only studied massage therapy, energy work and aromatherapy, but she worked with an herbalist. Through this experience, she enhanced her education with the art and science behind herbal tinctures and body products. Her experiences would lead her down an unexpected path, that of an entrepreneur.

“While in Colorado, I created my initial formula,” shares Crockett. “Once I moved back to Indianapolis, I used my proprietary formula to create my own natural herbal mixtures for clients, and word started spreading.”

Crockett has continued the methods she learned in Colorado. In 2001, Crockett moved back to Indianapolis and started her own massage practice and made products for her clients. She did not realize what a strong seed she planted with her clientele. The clients loved the products and asked for

more created, growing demand beyond her friends and family.

All Ambre Blends are made by hand with consistent care and thoughtfulness in every batch. Using only 100% pure and natural vegan ingredients from all over the

world, each Ambre Blends product is handcrafted from a proprietary blend base of Amber Essence.

“Amber oil has been used for centuries for its medicinal and aphrodisiac properties,” says Crockett. “With this as one of the ingredients in the Ambre Essence as our base, each essence reacts with one’s body chemistry, creating a unique experience for the customer.”

“I began selling my product at art shows,” shares Crockett. “In 2001, I started a tradition of holding an open house, and we have held it ever since. In 2003, Heidi Woodman of Haus Love called and said that she wanted to carry my products.”

That was when Crockett realized Ambre Blends was creating a buzz. Many other local boutiques and spas picked up Ambre Blends, and she also opened her online store that year.

In 2007, Stephanie Harris became friends with Crockett through a mutual friend. Harris was given a roll-on body product and received an unusual amount of compliments for it. While on vacation, Harris ended up giving the roll-on away to someone who became obsessed with it. When she returned from that trip, she promptly replaced it and bought more for gifts.

Harris knew something magical was happening with Ambre Blends and wished to be a part of it, becoming a partner and Director of Sales and Marketing.

“Ambre was doing this all by herself, completely self-funding and building her business,” shares Harris. “I hit the street and created more sales outlets.”

Taking a huge risk, Crockett and Harris went to their first trade show in January 2009. It was a big step and expensive, but it paid off tremendously. Their marketing began with a grassroots effort through word of mouth, then the boutique, gift and spa shows. Now Ambre Blends is working with a showroom in Los Angeles to penetrate the West Coast market. They have an online store locator and are distributed throughout more than 400 retailers domestically and worldwide.

The products within a retail location typically start with the roll-on, then the shops bring on the body creams and the spritzers. As the demand is established, it builds.

“Our client doesn’t just use our oil; they want to use the soap, body creams and skin tonics,” says Harris. “We build lifestyle products.”

The unique blend, Ambre Essence, serves as a standalone essence as well as the base for the entire line. The other three scents

are individually made up with 90% of their formula being Ambre Essence with additional oils added. This allows layering of their products.

“We are a very layerable line,” says Harris. “A client can use all the different products with the body cream, roll-on and deodorant, plus lip remedy, and all of the essences complement one another.”

The Ambre Blends team has grown with team members Sarah, Rebecca, Lisa, Michelle and Ambre’s husband, Adam. Adam Crockett became part of the team and handles operations. Their building looks like some sort of commercial lab and smells fabulous with all of their products at various stages of creation.

The adjacent shipping center is one that would appeal to Martha Stewart with clean lines and modern surroundings. Their work space is simple, functional and professional, naturally.

In time for the holidays, Ambre Blends is re-

launching their pure soy wax candles with some improvements from their vintage line in time for the holidays.

“We are always expanding our line and will come out with one or more new items every year,” shares Crockett. “In 2016, I will finally launch my baby line and hopefully release a new scent along with a couple other new products.”

All of their current and soon-to-be released products are made with the same care and hand craftsmanship, maintaining the integrity of their natural process. Ambre Blends offers all of their products at local retailers and online. Their offices are located on the northside of Indianapolis.

Holding a space is what someone does when they see your potential at a time when you don’t or can’t see it yourself. It’s what someone special in your life – your parent, grandparent or mentor – did for you when they saw the good in you, and they said that everything would be all right. When things looked impossible, they held that space for you that it was possible, and that made all the difference.

Laurie Kroll, founder and director of Village2Village Project, is one of those special people that is holding a space for someone, for many. She holds a space in her heart for the infinite potential of the children and families living in a remote village of Uganda.

Village2Village Project began in 2003 when Kroll and her family lived in Vermont, raising four small kids of their own including two who joined their family through adoption. A quote found on the Village2Village Project website explains how the experience of adoption has changed her: "Now any vulnerable orphan could be my own family, and any struggling mother could be a cherished relative. Adoption has not just expanded our family but my world.”

Two years ago, Kroll moved to Fishers where she continues to work with the dedicated and compassionate staff and volunteers, donors and sponsors of Village2Village Project to make remarkable, permanent changes in the lives of vulnerable children in Uganda.

When asked how she had the courage to

begin such a large project, Kroll says with quiet confidence, “I didn’t have training in non-profit management. I didn’t have all of that. It was more just a mom’s heart.”

Kroll explains that it all began with nine children that she saw in a photograph from a friend’s recent visit to a remote village in Uganda. They were orphans, alone and hungry. Some were sick, and they were also around the same ages as her own children.

Compelled, Kroll sent supplies to these children only to witness on her first visit to the village that there were 1,000 or more orphaned children. Created by the death of the parent generation from HIV/AIDS, these children were abandoned and starving, sick and alone. It was emotionally overwhelming, but she set her resolve.

14 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / DECEMBER 2015 / atFishers.com

“What would my own kids lives be like if nobody had stepped in for them?” says Kroll. “Who is going to stand in for these kids in this remote area where the rebel activity has caused most of the helping organizations to withdraw? There really wasn’t anyone left there helping.”

This region of Uganda experiences flooding and droughts, intense land disputes, attacks from the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) in years past and an economic system shattered by the death and dying of the parent generation in families due to the HIV/AIDS epidemic.

The parents are the money producers, and so in their death, they are leaving the very young and very old to fend for themselves. In these villages, one in every five children has been affected by disease or violence.

“There are desperate needs in this community,“ says Kroll.

Despite the circumstances, Kroll made her decision to act, not motivated by fear but instead inspired by the possibilities. She saw an opportunity for these children to not only live but to thrive with education and given the opportunity to follow their dreams.

Laurie explains, "Everybody that came into our program came into it because of tragedy, but we didn’t want them to be stuck in that pattern. Some kids shut down when they face tragedy. And we work with them and help them come out of their shell and dream.”

It is this type of care and compassion in addition to aid that is causing permanent change in the village and what makes Village2Village Project an amazing organization.

UPDATES YOU CAN DO TO BE READY TO GO!

Village2Village Project is a Christian ministry, recognized as a non-governmental relief organization in Uganda, providing compassionate orphan care in Serere, Uganda. Nutritional, medical, educational, social and spiritual care is provided for the children and families of remote villages that have had at least one parent affected by HIV/AIDS or violence.

Initially serving nine children, Village2Village Project now serves over 100 children and their families. Looking back, Laurie states, “Nine wasn’t very many, but it was better than none.” The growth, services and successes of Village2Village Project are truly remarkable.

The Hope Ministry currently serves the medical needs of more than 30 guardians with HIV/AIDS and has lost none to the disease since 2006. In 2008, the House of

Love was formed where children with special needs can receive specialized care. In 2015, Kroll received an update on two girls from the village. Both are attending college. Laurie smiles, adding, “One took the bar exam in August and is passionate about human rights law. The other is in her fourth year of medical school and wants to become a surgeon.”

To do this work, it’s very important to Village2Village Project to keep the children in their original village, within their existing families, to foster connection and a community supporting each other – the foundation for a permanent change. Laurie states, “I don’t want to provide change for a day or a month. I want to provide a permanent change for these children.”

To continue to provide permanent change in this village and plans to begin serving a few

nearby villages, their greatest need is funding. Individuals, community groups, religious organizations and businesses can secure the future of these children through partnership and donation in a monthly commitment program. The donations will provide the needs of these vulnerable children and support their dreams. This will hold a space for the clearly infinite potential of these children, and that makes all the difference.

Indy Premier has just announced its purchase of Trinity Sports Park in Noblesville located at 6835 E. 161st St. This 20-acre sports park will host five outdoor soccer fields in addition to a 16,000 sq. ft. indoor facility on site.

Coupled with this purchase, Indy Premier is expanding to the fields at McCordsville Sports Park to accommodate the growth and interest from the eastside of Fishers and those surrounding communities.

General Manager of Indy Premier Jamie Wood relates, “I am very excited about the growth that both our Travel and Rec Plus programs have shown over the past few years. It is very rewarding to see how much of a positive effect that our club and sport has had on the youth in Fishers and Noblesville, the two primary communities that we serve.

“This growth. however, has brought with it many challenges from a fields standpoint. and we have been stretched to the limit this past fall season. The addition of Trinity Sports Park and McCordsville Sports Park to our current campuses at Cumberland Park and New Hope in Fishers will ease the strain on fields greatly and allow us to better serve our membership longterm at all locations.”

With all the buzz about Trinity Sports Park, Indy Premier has decided to host an open house on Sunday, December 13 from 12-3 p.m. Working with real estate agents Dawn Fisher and Christy Corey of Team Fisher-Century 21 Rasmussen and financial sponsors of Indy Premier, this open house is sure to be an event filled with fun activities for kids and adults.

Come join the fun and satisfy your curiosity of what the new facility looks like and the grounds on which it sits. For more information on the open house and what to expect on that day, follow Indy Premier on Twitter at @IndyPremierSC or on Facebook at facebook.com/IndyPremierSC.

How often do you “meet” someone digitally before you actually meet them in person? If you’re like most people, the answer is “more often than not!” It has become standard procedure now to check out a professional’s LinkedIn profile before deciding to book an appointment, research a candidate’s social media profiles before considering them for a job interview and to “Google” someone before going on a date with them. We like to do our research, and using the Internet is our tool of choice.

What is your digital first impression saying about you?

Chances are, you haven’t put a lot of time or effort into really assessing what type of first impression you are making online, but you should. First impressions, especially those made digitally, are a PAIN: Permanent, Accurate, Immediate and Non-Verbal.

Digital first impressions matter. And in many cases, your digital first impression can mean the difference between getting the job, being accepted into your dream

college program or being asked out by a person who might be perfect for you in real life.

Still not convinced that having a handle of your digital first impression is important? Let me share a story with you. A friend of mine recently had a friend whose daughter had applied to a prestigious university program. She had all the credentials, excelled in every key area and interviewed like a pro. All signs pointed to her being accepted in to the program.

But then she was declined. They were truly baffled. When asked by a friend why the girl wasn’t admitted into the program, one of the members of the admissions board had this to say: “Tell her to get all that sh*t off of her social media.”

Not representing herself appropriately and not caring for her digital first impression to ensure it conveyed her intentions properly was the difference between being accepted and missing out on an amazing opportunity.

Don’t let this be you.So how do you take control of your

digital first impression and make sure that people who are meeting you for the first time digitally are getting a true, authentic representation of who you are? The best way is to take a comprehensive digital asset inventory.

A digital asset inventory is a great way for you to take a detailed look at each item that represents you online and to evaluate it for its current strengths and shortcomings, for things that should be changed and for ways it might be enhanced to better represent your intentions and capabilities.

Begin by making a list of each digital asset that is currently used to represent you online. Digital assets include: social media profiles (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Google +, etc.), pictures, logos, videos, websites, head shots, brochures, marketing materials and any other item that helps to convey your digital brand.

Next, quickly list the first three words that come to mind to describe your first impression with each of those assets. Are the words that came to mind the same words you would hope to have someone

DIGITAL FIRST IMPRESSIONS

SMIRK VS. SMILEVanessa Van Edwards, Chief behavioral investigator and founder of The Science of People human behavior research lab says:

“Stop the smirk! One of the most common mistakes I see in profile pictures is the one-sided smile, otherwise known as a smirk. The problem with smirking is that it’s the universal facial expression for contempt, which means hatred or disdain. If your profile picture shows a smirk, you’re nonverbally telling people you don’t want them to connect with you! Notice the difference in the photos below.”

TOWNEPOST NETWORK / DECEMBER 2015 / TownePost.com TownePost.com / DECEMBER 2015 / TOWNEPOST NETWORK

think of when they meet you online? If not, it’s time to make some changes! For instance, if you would want a potential client who found your profile on LinkedIn to immediately think of you as credible, trustworthy and professional, you would need to have a professional headshot of you looking straight forward into the camera and would want to make sure you have a genuine smile on your face to show warmth and openness.

If you have a picture of you with a smirk (or half smile) and are angled away from the camera, the impression you give is that you are addressing them with contempt and are blocking or distancing yourself from them or perhaps being deceptive. Definitely not the vibe that you would want a potential client to pick up from your profile!

And please, leave the “girls night out” or fishing trip pictures for your Facebook timeline. Those pictures don’t belong as your profile picture on a professional site.

You would then work your way through each of your digital assets, evaluating each one in a similar manner. Once you know what specific digital assets aren’t making the first impression you would like it to, you can work through updating each one by removing the components that don’t convey you authentically and adding the photos, videos and content that will more accurately represent you and make a first impression you can be proud of.

If you are interested in learning more about how to evaluate and improve your digital first impression, I’d love to help. I’m a Certified Body Language Trainer and Non-Verbal skills expert, and I love helping people master their first impressions, increase their influence and communicate with confidence. You can reach me at [email protected] or on Twitter @powernonverbals.

FAKE SMILE VS. GENUINE SMILEVan Edwards goes on to say:“Another common issue with profile pictures is the fake smile. A fake smile is when the smile doesn’t fully reach up into the eyes (the sign of genuine happiness). As humans, we love seeing genuine happiness on others, so think happy thoughts or reflect on a great experience to bring out real happiness in your photos.”

A SURE SIGN OF THE GIVING SEASON: SALVATION ARMY BELL RINGINGLike twinkling lights and joyful carols, it simply wouldn’t be Christmas without the familiar ringing of The Salvation Army bells. For six weeks each fall, The Salvation Army asks the public to remember their neighbors in need by dropping spare dimes and dollars in its iconic red kettles.

These donations help fund programs and services long after the Christmas trees come down and the last of the snow has melted. From after school programs and summer camp to food pantries and utility assistance, The Salvation Army serves tens of thousands of men, women and children in central Indiana.

One of these individuals was Phyllis, who is rebuilding her life at the Ruth Lilly Women and Children’s Center, located on The Salvation Army campus in the heart of downtown Indianapolis dubbed the “Block of Hope.”

Phyllis has no illusions about how dire her situation had gotten. “If I’d sat out there another day, I’d be gone,” she shares, shaking her head at the memory of her last days on the street. Phyllis had been homeless and living at a local bus station, suffering from hyperglycemia because she didn’t have access to medications to treat her diabetes. She weighed only 86 pounds and had stopped eating when she

walked through the doors of the Ruth Lilly Women and Children’s Center.

Phyllis was immediately admitted, given food and looked over by a doctor. It wasn’t long before she was back on her medication and sharing her harrowing tale with the shelter staff, which included the sudden death of her husband from brain cancer and the loss of her house. She’d always been taken care of as a wife and didn’t know how to seek employment, handle personal finances or get the psychological care she needed to deal with the loss of her husband.

“This is a place where you can get help,” Phyllis smiles as she gestures at the walls of her new home at the Women and Children’s Center. “They’re helping me through things. I’ve never been homeless before, and it’s really hard. They have a lot of options here. I’m grateful for it because it’s getting me on my feet.”

Phyllis is now tackling a list of goals, both large and small. From getting her body healthy again to finding employment and saving money for her own apartment, she works every day to get closer to independence. That work includes weekly meetings with her case manager and social worker, sessions with a psychiatrist, money management classes and a new job at a

local restaurant.

After just two months, Phyllis already looks like a different woman. She proudly tells anyone she meets that she’s up to 120 pounds and has her diabetes under control. While Phyllis will sheepishly admit that she still isn’t “street smart,” she’s learning how to make smart decisions for her future.

“They set you up for success – that’s what they do,” Phyllis explains. “I give thanks to The Salvation Army. I thank God every morning that I’m here.”

So when you drop a quarter in a red kettle this month or search out the clear ringing of a bell in a crowded shopping mall, remember the thousands of Hoosiers like Phyllis who know The Salvation Army is more than a red kettle at Christmas. It’s hope for tomorrow.

HOW AND WHEN DID YOU GET INVOLVED IN YOUNG LIFE? I started going to the monthly themed clubs in eighth grade with all of my friends. It was so fun to see all my friends in one place!

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE MEMORY FROM YOUNG LIFE SUMMER CAMP? I’ll never forget the three-hour long conversation I had with my leader Abby Back on the second night of camp. Abby answered so many of the questions I had about the Christian faith and prayed with me when I accepted Christ into my life. I will never forget that night.

WHAT IS THE BIGGEST LESSON YOU’VE LEARNED IN LIFE SO FAR? I’ve learned to not take life too seriously, and that life with Jesus isn’t easier, but it’s a whole lot better! I’ve learned to live with an eternal mindset and to treat everyone like my brothers and sisters in Christ.

WHAT DREAMS DO YOU HAVE FOR YOUR FUTURE? I pray that I’ll be living every single day like it’s my last, and that I will never let my age be a factor in what I can and cannot do! I have a dream of traveling to faraway countries to share the Gospel with people who have never even heard of the name Jesus.

WHAT WOULD YOU TELL SOMEONE ABOUT YOUNG LIFE WHO HAS NEVER ATTENDED BEFORE? I was a skeptic, and Young Life turned me into a believer. God’s presence is there, and it’s undeniable. What’s the worst that could happen? If you give it a chance, it could completely change your life. I’m here to tell you that it turned mine upside down. I’m truly living now. What is stopping you?

Being a straight A student isn’t an easy accomplishment for any student, but it’s just one of the many achievements 12-year-old Zach Clar could brag about. However, Clar isn’t the bragging type; he’s an unassuming student at Fishers Junior High School.

Zach plays the violin in the Chamber Orchestra at school, just started tap lessons and is an accomplished actor. After attending a workshop at the Tarkington Theatre in Carmel, he was encouraged to audition for a part in the Footlite Musical production of “Mame.” He got the part, and as they say “a star was born.” Clar played a young Patrick Dennis and later played Young Tommy in the The Who’s “Tommy” musical.

Clar recently earned two nominations by the Encore Association for the Encore Award Best Performer Under the Age of 18. Zach balances his academic schedule while prepping for two upcoming performances. He’s currently rehearsing for “Babes in Toyland” at Footlite.

“I love staying busy, and being in plays is one of my favorite things,” shares Clar.

Acting isn’t his primary passion, however. Clar feels that breakdancing is his true calling. He’s a member of Ground Force One Crew based in Grand Rapids, Michigan. His parents have logged thousands of miles driving him to practice in Michigan and to breakdance battles all over the Midwest.

Clar has a few goals still to check off his adolescent bucket list.

"I’d like to win a B-Boy (breakdance) battle and play the lead role in ‘Oliver.’”

He’s got long term plans too. Clar hopes to attend Belmont University in Nashville, Tennessee, and he’d like to become a teacher. “There is something rewarding about sharing a concept and helping people understand something they were previously confused about,” he says.

In spite of his busy schedule and diverse interests, Clar is a normal kid at heart. If he ever had a day completely free of obligations, he says he would spend it “playing Animal Crossing on Nintendo along with [his friend] Branden and eating cheese pizza and Cheese Weezy Breadsticks from Bella Pizzeria.”

Veteran James Womack completed 21 years of active duty army when he retired on June 30, 1980, at Fort Benjamin Harrison, Indiana. In addition to the army, James reflects a multi-veteran with his steadfast commitment to God, his church, his family, the American Red Cross and the Indiana Blood Center.

Should you happen to see him at Mama Bear’s sipping hot chocolate after attending church service, he’ll more than likely be wearing his veteran ball cap and Butler sweatshirt. He actively participates in choir and other areas at Holy Spirit at Geist Catholic Church. He attends daily Mass, never faltering a smidgen of doubt of why he does what he does. He represents a faithful veteran with total obligation to whatever he’s decided to take on, whether he’s leading the congregation in song and spirit or rolling up his sleeve to donate blood.

This past Veterans Day, the Indiana Blood

Center recognized James for having donated so much blood over the years and invited him to accompany the Indiana Blood Center bloodmobile in the Veterans Day Parade held in downtown Indy November 11.

“It’s donors like James who understand the true meaning of serving a community,” says Lucy J. Smith, Corporate Communications Specialist at Indiana Blood Center. “James has 243 lifetime to-date-donations. This is outstanding. This is absolutely a high number and one we don’t see every day. From all of us at Indiana Blood Center and from hospital patients near and far, a huge thanks to James for his commitment to our life-giving mission.”

You might be surprised to know that humans don’t have as much blood within their bodies as you might think. The typical male has only eight pints of blood while the average female has only five pints. (enotes.com/homework-help/how-much-blood-average-human-body-289065)

“Now I know why the Army used to say, ‘Stop the bleeding, put on the tourniquet,’” says James.

Why is he so passionate about donating his blood?

He explains that while stationed in Munich, Germany, he stood at attention in a military troop inspection when a Red Cross agent delivered an emergency-leave notice to his commander. Although his mother had survived surgery in New Orleans, she was deteriorating quickly, and her life expectancy was only 38 hours.

The mission of the American Red Cross (ARC) is to support active duty soldiers and their families in times of need.

“The Red Cross went beyond the call of duty for me when Mom died,” says James. “I was a Private First Class earning only $59 a month. There was no way I could have flown home and buried Mom

without their financial help. Black citizens in Mississippi and Louisiana had no access to life and burial insurance at this segment of American history. At the very first Red Cross blood draw in Munich after my return, I decided that there was a way for me to pay it forward and demonstrate my gratitude by donating at each blood drive.”

As a result, James has donated blood every eight weeks since 1960 with a few exceptions. When President Clinton closed Fort Benjamin Harrison, the Indiana Blood Center replaced the ARC as the primary blood organization for James. So far, he has provided 142 units of blood to the Indiana Blood Center, 21 units to the ARC with a total of 163 units which translates to 40 gallons of whole blood.

According to the ARC (redcrossblood.org), one pint of blood can save up to three lives. There are eight pints of blood in one gallon. James has donated 40 gallons of blood so far

which means he has saved about 960 lives. By the time you read this article, he will have donated even more!

James has experienced a lifetime of hardships such as being born on a Mississippi cotton plantation in 1940 to illiterate parents. His father, an abusive alcoholic, rejected James from birth. James served in the Army for 21 years including a combat tour in Vietnam. After getting married and having four children, he managed to go to college part-time and earn a Bachelor of Science from Butler University.

There are way too many adversities throughout his life to mention in this article. You can learn more about how he survived his misfortunes with fortitude in his book “Black Dad—White Dad: The James Womack Story.” His book is available on Amazon and will make a wonderful Christmas gift for anyone in search of a true

story offering American history adorned with faith, hope and inspiration.

Writer / Teresa Lorton . Photographer / Sarah Steele

Indiana natives Sarah and Austin Steele brought their love of ‘all things outdoors’ to Noblesville and built an ice skating rink in the heart of Hamilton Town Center. The Rink is an open air skating venue open daily in the area near Santa’s House on the west side of the mall. The rink is approximately 5,000 square feet, designed for freestyle skating, not hockey. It’s decorated with festive lights to give night skating some extra twinkle.

The idea was the brainchild of Austin who learned to embrace winter during his time in Minnesota. “Instead of staying inside and avoiding the cold, people up north tend to celebrate winter and build family memories,“ says Sarah.

Austin and a friend discussed the idea of a skating rink near a mall, and they became convinced the idea was a winner. Sarah started researching companies that could help with the logistics, and after about two years, their plan began to take shape. With the enthusiastic participation of Simon Malls, The Rink got the green light.

The company that specializes in building the temporary rinks currently has 62 in

operation including one in Hawaii, so unpredictable or unseasonably warm Hoosier weather should not deter skaters. According to Sarah, there is nothing else like The Rink in Indiana. “It’s really a fascinating process to see it come together,” she says. “It starts by building a giant sandbox.”

Dimensions of The Rink are about 85 feet by 65 feet, and it’s cooled by a system of coils placed atop the sand. Coolant runs through the coils, powered by a giant generator near The Rink. Once the structure was completed, it was time to start making the ice. That was done gradually in thin layers to form a base of ice about six inches thick.

The Rink will be open through January 31, and there is a trailer on site with about 200 pairs of rental skates. There are also benches surrounding The Rink for those who would prefer to spectate rather than participate.

“We are hoping families will start to build winter traditions around The Rink,” says Sarah who is helping her 3-year-old son master the ice. “We are all about the experiences, not the things. That’s the sentiment we are trying to promote here.”

The plan is for The Rink to be dismantled in early February and rebuilt again every year to coincide with the arrival of Santa Claus at Hamilton Town Center.
