Fa i th Format ion Pa ren t s As we get closer to Lent, I will be sending home resources that can be used as family discussions on how to help your child understand the season of Lent, and age appropriate ways for your child to observe

this important liturgical season. The Faith Formation children and families are invited, and encouraged to help with the Living Stations of the Cross. This is a great opportunity to give your time and talent as a family for our parish.

Thank you to everyone who came to our first planning meeting. We will be posting production meeting days and times next week in the bulletin. If you were unable to attend the initial meeting, it is not too late to be a part of this amazing event.

Min is t r i es L eaders

Please turn in your calendar plans for the year to Pat Sullivan in the office. We are making a master calendar for all of the parish. This will be a valuable tool for all of the parishioners. We feel this will be a great way to communicate your ministries meetings, and events. Also, if you would like your ministry’s events posted in the bulletin, please submit the request to Kim before Monday morning in order for it to be included in the following bulletin. All articles need to be approved by Fr. George.

Mardi Gras Celebration Feb. 13 at 6:30pm

MHNJ Women had a great social event last Thursday. (See these photos) The spirit of the Lord is acting in a mighty way to empower and educate all Catholic women in spirituality, leadership and service.

All women are invited to our Mardi Gras on February 13 at 6:30pm in the social hall. Bring food to share, and let us enter the season of Lent with enthusiasm while responding to the Gospel values.

“Online Giving Coming

Soon!”

Online Giving will soon be available for parishioners, making donating simple, safe, and secure. Be sure to check the bulletin in the coming

weeks for more information or call the parish

BISHOP PARKES DEVELOPING A MUTUALLY SHARED VISION FOR THE DIOCESE OF ST. PETERSBURG As a continuation of the listening sessions that Bishop Gregory Parkes conducted in 2017, he is currently working with a team to develop

a mutually shared vision for the Diocese of St. Petersburg. The team is taking into account feedback that has been received from parishioners, staff, priests and religious, as well as insights from the National Convocation of Catholic Leaders that focused on

missionary discipleship and the vision of Pope Francis shared in “The Joy of the Gospel.” The Catholic Leadership Institute is facilitating the process to develop a vision, which is expected to be completed by this summer. To learn more, visit http://www.dosp.org/visioning/.

Q. I understand that Catholics ages 18 to 59 should fast on Ash Wednesday and on Good Friday, but what exactly are the rules for these fasts? A. Fasting on these days means we can have only one full, meatless meal. Some food can be taken at the other regular meal times if necessary, but combined they should be less than a full meal. Liquids are allowed at any time, but no solid food should be consumed between meals. Q. Are there exemptions other than for age from the requirement to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday? A. Those that are excused from fast and abstinence outside the age limits include the physically or mentally ill including individuals suffering from chronic illnesses such as diabetes. Also excluded are pregnant or nursing women. In all cases, common sense should prevail, and ill persons should not further jeopardize their health by fasting.

Ash Wednesday What’s with that dirt on your head?

Who hasn’t gotten that question on Ash Wednesday before? Do you feel silly when people ask you about your ashes? And is it hard to answer their questions? Having ashes on your forehead isn’t just some weird Catholic thing: it’s a tradition that finds its roots in the Old Testament. “I turned to the Lord God, to seek help, in prayer and petition, with fasting, sackcloth, and ashes” (Daniel 9:3). When the ashes are placed on our foreheads in the sign of the Cross, it is a reminder of several things. First, it is a call to repentance: a physical sign that we are sinners in need of forgiveness, which is how the prophets used it in the Old Testament. Second, it is to remind us that God created us from the earth and when we die, we will return to it.

We are the Youth — WAY

This past week, we had some great discussion over some of the questions our youth had over the faith. Some of them were silly and some of them were very profound, surprising, and thought-provoking. We thank you all for your continued prayers and support of our ministry. This week, we will be celebrating St. Valentine's Day a bit early since it happens to fall on Ash Wednesday this year. We will have a small discussion on St. Valentine and love followed by lots of fun and food. We hope to see you there and God Bless! - Clari

Via Crucis viviente

–Clari
