SEAN KEANE IN CONCERT

Sean Keane is a singer and mul-ti-instrumentalist of skill, acclaim and flair. He is rooted firmly in Ireland with the Keane family tra-dition of sean-nós singing , but his music branches out gloriously from those roots pulling suste-nance from many genres.

Sean’s voice has untold depth, range and maturity; his skill on the flute, whistles and pipes with which he punctuates songs, make his work unforgettable

Sean has been a member of Shegui, Reel Union (with his sister Dolores) and Arcadia with such well known names as Johnny ‘Rin-go’ McDonagh, Sharon Shannon & Frances Black. He embarked on a solo career in 1993 and all of his solo albums are platinum sellers and remain in constant demand.

Sean continues to delight audi-ences all over the world with live performances and recorded work and we are delighted to welcome him back to The Moat Theatre.

THE GREAT HUNGER

Peter Duffy’s powerful theatrical performance of Patrick Kavan-agh’s poem The Great Hunger has been touring the country for the past year to popular and critical acclaim including per-formances in the Irish Cultural Centre in Paris and the Cathedral Quarter Festival in Belfast.

Generally considered to be Pat-rick Kavanagh’s finest work, The Great Hunger sharply delineates a life of economic and imagina-tive privation. A large part of the hunger the poem describes is sexual; its protagonist is bachelor farmer Patrick Maguire who has spent years at his mother’s beck and call. When she finally dies aged 91, he himself is 65 and has missed the boat in terms of find-ing a wife and having a family of his own, a source of acute sorrow and regret to him.

Peter Duffy himself grew up on a small Monaghan farm so has a ready affinity for Kavanagh’s ma-terial which informs and shines through his absorbing interpreta-tion of the work.

The Moat Club presents

HEDDA GABLER By Henrik Ibsen

The Moat Club Festival Play 2015

TV’s Desperate Housewives don’t have a patch on Hedda, the spoilt and manipulative heroine of Ibsen’s masterpiece Hedda Gabler. Psy-chotically bored newlywed Hedda stalks around her new home like an injured panther ready to pounce on those who care for her – Lady Macbeth doesn’t get a look in.

The limits placed on Hedda by a claustrophobic society are noth-ing compared to the limits she has placed on herself. Things suddenly get interesting when a shady char-acter from her past shows up. Is this Hedda’s chance to break free?

Sometimes described as the female Hamlet, Hedda is no cardboard cut-out femme fatale. Her complex-ity makes her a very real fictional character, and a challenge for any actress to play.

Hedda Gabler is the Moat Club’s entry in the full-length drama cir-cuit. Join us for a story of rivalry, lust, power and a woman’s search for freedom.

MARYSWritten and presented

by Jean FarrellDirected by Joe McCarrickThis one-woman-show is a comical yet poignant look at life, from child-hood in the1950s, to the present day. It draws very much on the in-fluence of religion as taught by the nuns--preparing young Irish Catho-lic schoolgirls to imitate the virtues of the Virgin Mary. They were to be meek, humble and pure. How well did this help them cope with the huge social changes of the fol-lowing decades? Were the fanciful dreams of youth fulfilled? This jour-ney of self-discovery is interspersed with well-known hit songs from the various eras, sung by Catherine Gal-lagher. The Six Marys are fun-lov-ing girlfriends, who grow into prac-tical, everyday housewives. The light-hearted atmosphere helps us concentrate on their journeys through the decades-- delivering all kinds of sharp and comical ob-servations. Jean has plenty to say about the teenage pursuit of Mr Wonderful—followed by the reali-ty of married life, teenage children and growing waistlines. And, when our children grow up eventually and leave home, what lies ahead then—a big void or peace at last?“Really really funny-and SO true to life.” “Haven’t laughed so much in years-LOVED it” “I had forgotten all those things-WONDERFUL show.”

The Moat Club presents

Someone Who’ll Watch

Over Meby Frank McGuinness

For an Englishman, an Irishman and an American working in the conflict-torn Beirut, the unthinka-ble happens. They are taken hos-tage and locked up together in a cell with no indication of when – or if – they will be released. Pawns in a political crisis much bigger than themselves, they can succumb to terror… or survive.

Thrown together in close quarters the men have to face up to some tough questions including the en-mity between England and Ireland and that old nugget, their relation-ships with their fathers.

Frank McGuinness’s play, direct-ed by All-Ireland winning director Barbara Sheridan, explores the dai-ly crisis endured by hostages and paints three complex individuals who, though tested to their limits, hang on to humour, wit and faith.

The 1992 Broadway production starred Stephen Rea (Edward), James McDaniel (Adam), and Alec McCowen and received Tony nomi-nations for Best Play and Best Actor (Rea). A 2005 West End production starred Jonny Lee Miller (Adam), Aidan Gillen (Edward) and David Threlfall (Michael).

Tom Crean– Antarctic Explorer

Written and Performed by Aidan Dooley

Fringe First Award WinnerEdinburgh Fringe Festival 2006

Best Solo Performance Award WinnerNew York Int. Fringe Festival 2003

Tom Crean, the intrepid Antarctic ex-plorer and one of Ireland’s unsung he-roes, is brought to life in this dramatic and humorous solo performance by Aidan Dooley. Hear the riveting true stories of Crean’s Antarctic explorations as one of the few men to serve with both Scott and Shackleton and survive the three famous expeditions: Dis-covery, (1901 – 1904); Terra Nova (1910 – 1913); and Endurance (1914 - 1916). Crean’s story is a testament of human fortitude against all the elements of the Antarctic, his 36 mile, solitary trek to base camp during the Terra Nova ex-pedition to rescue his comrades Teddy Evans and William Lashly has been de-scribed by Antarctic historians as “the finest feat of individual heroism from the entire age of exploration”. He was subsequently awarded the Albert Medal for his bravery. This multi-award winning show has now played criti-cally acclaimed sell-out performances throughout Ireland, USA, Australia, Eu-rope and the UK. “A remarkable and uplifting piece of the-atre, gives everything and asks nothing.” Emer O’Kelly, Sunday Independent “This magnificent revelation of a fascinat-ing character simply compels a standing ovation” Gerry Colgan, The Irish Times“You will go to then end of the earth to find theatre this rewarding” Murray Bramwell, The Australian“An unparalleled portrayal” Gina Bellafante New York Times

RTE ALL-IRELAND

DRAMA PREVIEW

We invite you to save the date for an exciting pre-view of some of the RTE all-Ireland drama competi-tion finalists.

Tickets for the finals, which take place at the beginning of May at the Dean Crowe theatre, Ath-lone, are as difficult to se-cure as any GAA all-Ireland in Croke Park, so the Moat Club is hosting a mini fes-tival to give our local au-dience the chance to see some of the contenders at the peak of their perfor-mances just before they head to Athlone.

We can’t reveal the line-up just yet, as it depends on the results of the hectic circuit of qualifying dra-ma festivals in February and March. Keep an eye on www.moattheatre.com and www.facebook.com/MoatClub for details of the productions you will have the chance to see. Who knows - Hedda Gabler, the Moat Club’s festival entry, might just be one of them!

What is certain is that the cream of amateur drama in Ireland will be coming to Naas. Don’t miss it.

It’s the 70th Anniversary of WWII VE Day (Victory in Europe) and some very talented young musicians, recent winners of the Feis Ceoil Ireland, Fleadh Cheoil Na hEireann as well as Internation-al Music Competitions winners, will perform music dedicated to this Anniversary. 70 years on from the War, the memory lives on in music, and you will be captured by that very music from Shostakovitch to Rachmaninov and popular music from the movies such as Schindler’s List.
