The Mummy and the Crocodile: The Slovenians Exploring the Lands along the Nile21 Mar - 31 Dec, National Museum of Slovenia - MetelkovaAfter nearly a century, the National Museum of Slovenia is putting on display the Egyptian Collection of its predecessor, the Provincial Museum of Carniola. The exhibition reveals the stories of three Slovenian Egyptologists who brought the objects in the collection over to Slovenia. It is not widely known today that a number of successful explorers of Africa were Slovenian, despite the fact that the achievements of the Slovenian Egyptologists Anton Lavrin, Ignacij Knoblehar, and Josef Švegel (Josef Schwegel in German) were on a par with those of their contemporaries exploring the ancient Egyptian civilization. Apart from the objects that the three Egyptologists donated to the Provincial Museum of Carniola, it was also the stories of their experiences in exotic lands that stirred the imagination of the Slovenian public of their time. The centrepiece of the exhibition is the mummy of Isahta (A-Keswy-Ta), a priest of Amon, which aroused great public interest at the time it was brought over to Ljubljana along with a stuffed crocodile. Open 10:00 - 18:00. Closed: Mondays Free entrance every first Sunday of the month

Aquae Iasae - archaeological exhibition21 May - 26 Oct, Cankarjev dom cultural and congress centreAquae Iasae is the first exhibition to bring together the extraordinary archaeological finds discovered during the latest excavations in the area of the Croatian town of Varaždinske Toplice, carried out by the Zagreb Archaeological Museum. From the 1st to the 4th century AD, the area around the town of Varaždinske Toplice in north-western Croatia was the site of a thermal spring and a Roman settlement called Aquae Iasae. Systematic research conducted in the area since 1953 yielded the discovery of a complex of public buildings consisting of a bathing area with various building facilities, pools, and a basilica, and an open area with a temple surrounding the thermal spring. The latest archaeological research, conducted between 2011 and 2012, yielded the discovery of highly interesting Roman architectural solutions and numerous stone monuments, reliefs, inscriptions, and sculptures testifying to the extraordinary importance of Aquae Iasae as a Roman thermal spa centre.Open 10:00 - 19:00, Sundays 10:00 - 14:00

Crossings15 May - 20 Jul, International Centre of Graphic ArtsThe exhibition raises questions on the possibilities of the Centre’s collection and addresses the flatness of the medium in printmaking as potential in relation to contemporary art practices. The tension created between the works from the collection of the International Centre of Graphic Arts and the artworks produced by the invited artists attempts to create a space for a new reflection on the medium, surpassing the boundaries between past and present. Open 10:00 - 18:00. Closed: Mondays

Betontanc: Track of the World - theatre and dance production26, 27, and 28 June at 20:00, Stara mestna elektrarna

Betontanc, a leading Slovenian contemporary theatre and dance troupe led by the stage director Matjaž Pograjc, will present the premiere of their brand new production. The premiere has been announced with the following words: “We all like sport because of its purity. There’s only you, your body, the track, and the competition. Everyone wants to win, but some people really need to be winners. We are all held captive in the same game without a way out. What are we supposed to do? Retire? Tell the truth? People want more and more. And more and more is what we have to give. We must act like heroes that we are thought to be. We must make sacrifices for the show to go on. Culture to the people, sport to the common folks! But what then?”
