DESCENDANTS OF NAZIS, AN INFERNAL LEGACY How do you go about shaping your own identity in this day and age when your surname is Goëring, Goebbels or Himmler? A certain number of descendants of Nazi dignitaries now live in Israel. Some have converted to Judaism and have espoused its precepts. They wear the kippa, have married Orthodox Jews and their children attend “yeshivas” – religious schools. They were not born at the time of the Shoah and yet they bear the weight of their ancestry as though they felt guilty through hereditary. In Israel, this is referred to as “Tikkun”, which means fixing/rectification. What is daily life like when you have a histori-cally tainted name? Where does the guilt come from that drives you to live among your parents’ victims?

Un certain nombre de descendants de dignitaires nazis vivent désor-mais en Israël. Certains se sont convertis au judaïsme et en ont épousé les préceptes : ils portent la kippa, sont mariés avec des orthodoxes et leurs enfants fréquentent les yeshivas, les écoles religieuses ! Ils n’étaient pas nés au moment de la Shoah et, pourtant, ils portent le poids de leur ascendance comme s’ils se sentaient coupables par hé-rédité ! En Israël, on appelle ça « le tikoun » : la réparation, la repentance. Comment vit-on sa vie lorsque l’on porte un nom historiquement enta-ché ? D’où vient la culpabilité qui vous pousse à vivre parmi les victimes de vos parents ?
