Next Ordinary Meeting of Council

- Tuesday 18 March 2014 -

Acting General Manager Robert Rayner, Cr Campbell and I met with CEO Jeff Caldbeck and Robert McGorman, Counsellor of the Rural Financial Counselling Service of NSW. Mr Caldbeck requested that Council seek input from ratepayers and prepare a submission outlining the serious drought situation in the majority of our Shire, in particular the lack of water effecting our Council operations as well as stock and domestic usage. Thank you to Acting General Manager Robert Rayner who prepared the submission forwarded to Mr Caldbeck who presented it to the Federal Minister for Agriculture, Mr Barnaby Joyce and our Local Federal and Sate Members on our behalf. A very determined Western Division group of Councillors and General Managers met in Cobar last Wednesday debating the final report of the Independent Inquiry into the status of Local Government in NSW. Acting General Manager Robert Rayner prepared a submission including responses from Balranald Shire Councillors which was most helpful during this debate. It was concluded that the Western Division of Councils had delivered services and managed their resources achieving outcomes but are always looking at ways to improve services. The meeting voted that the Western Division Councils should remain as a strong lobbying force. A resolution was also passed to seek an urgent meeting with Treasury Corp. Western Division Councils believe that it is evident that Treasury Corp are putting an unjustifiable burden on Western Division Councils. I would like to thank all the businesses and the community

for their patience and co-operation whilst the Market

Street road works are in progress.

Balranald gearing up for motorhome rallies

It is all systems go as Balranald gears up to play host to the Solos’ Network Motorhome Rally to be held at Greenham Park from March 17 - 24. Council staff have been working closely with the rally executive to ensure the event is a success. Local community groups and organisations are also set to benefit from the event by providing catering for different components of the event over the eight day rally. Councils Director of Economic and Community Development Robyn Ryan said “ this is a great opportunity for us to showcase our community and all that we have to offer”. “The economic flow-on from such an event will provide a much needed boost to our local economy” Ms Ryan added. Members of the Solos’ Network executive will be arriving in Balranald shortly to commence on-site preparations for the event. On Saturday March 22, the local community will be invited to attend an Open/Market Day at Greenham Park - come along and see what motorhoming is all about! There will also be an opportunity for individuals or community group or organisations to have a market stall at the open/market day. Anyone interested in operating a stall should contact Council’s Community Development Cherie Murphy on 03 5020 1300 or email [email protected] Over the coming month the community will be a hive of activity with the Solos’ rally and the CMCA 28th Anniversary Rally in Robinvale/Euston from March 31 - April 6. Following the Robinvale Rally, 15 to 20 “big rig” motorhomes will visit Balranald for a 4 day stopover.

Council to name centre at the March Meeting

At the February meeting of Council, it was resolved that a mailbox drop followed by a street poll be conducted to allow the community to make final comment on the naming suggestions, or to submit additional ideas for the new complex. In a report to Council, the Director of Economic and Community Development Robyn Ryan advised that various names had been submitted, and with the centre opening prior to July 2014 it is timely for Council to decide on an appropriate name. A list of suggested names will be sent to all households in the Shire early next week and Council urge you to take the time and put forward your preferences or other suggestions.

The sound of music….

With dimmed lights, flickering candles and the aromas of Italy, the Theatre Royal provided a tranquil setting for the 2014 Murray River International Music Festival performance by Trio Leonardo, consisting of Andrea Dainese (flute), Elisabetta Ghebbioni (harp) and Giancarlo di Vacri (viola). Over thirty people enjoyed a night of fabulous music, good company and great food cooked by Sergio de Pieri.
