Mungo Man was first discovered in 1974 by Geologist Dr Jim Bowler at the banks of Lake Mungo within the Balranald Shire. The discovery and subsequent research by world renowned archaeologist Dr Alan Thorne changed our understanding of the antiquity of human occupation in Australia setting it back beyond 40,000 years. Appropriately, Mungo Man’s last stop before his journey home to Lake Mungo was in Balranald on the 16th November commencing with a Smoking Ceremony that took place at the Aboriginal Cemetery, followed by a special event at the Discovery Centre. This event included the unveiling of a commemorative plaque honouring Alice Kelly and the return of Mungo Man. A couple of hundred people packed the Discovery Centre precinct to commemorate Mungo Man’s stopover in Balranald on his journey back home to Mungo and to honour the late Alice Kelly - Mutthi Mutthi Elder who was born and lived in Balranald and was custodian of Lake Mungo & the Willandra Lakes Region. The Welcome to Country was delivered by Kieaminda Charles in both the Mutthi Mutthi language and in English. Guest speakers included Mayor Leigh Byron, Patsy Winch (Alice Kelly’s Daughter), Dr Jim Bowler (Geologist who discovered Mungo Man), Dave Johnston (Aboriginal Archaeologist), Michael Lever (Senior Heritage Consultant & Archaeologist), Jenea Charles (Great granddaughter of Alice) and Vicki Clark (Granddaughter of Alice Kelly) who gave a moving speech. The Kyalite Crop Walk and Spray Application workshop, which was coordinated by Mallee Sustainable Farming and supported by stakeholders including Western Local Land Services, was held on 19 September and included inspection of the trial site and covered important information on herbicide resistance management and spray application. Congratulations to the organisers of the Balranald Races on another fabulous event. As the school year nears a close I would like to applaud the efforts of all those students completing their exams, and extend well wishes for the future to those finishing their education this year. The November Council meeting took place in Euston at the Recreation Reserve and it was a wonderful opportunity to meet with community members from the Euston township. Euston Preschool and Euston Primary School students sang wonderfully for all present. The Robinvale/Euston Lion’s Club cooked a BBQ lunch and the weather was perfect for this. I had the opportunity to address the gathering at the Discovery Centre as part of Mungo Man’s Return Home to Country. It was wonderful to see such a large crowd at the event. It was a privilege to hear from all the speakers taking part, such amazing sto-ries and knowledge shared. The commemorative plaque was unveiled to tremendous applause and emotion. I encourage all those who have not yet seen it to take the time to read it. Huge congratulations to Council’s tourism team as Discover Balranald & Surrounds brings home Bronze
