Councillors Alan Purtill and Steve O'Halloran, along with General Manager, Aaron Drenovski and I attended the Local Government NSW Annual conference recently. During the conference, Cr Purtill and Cr O’Halloran were recognised for their Outstanding Service as elected members, and I’d like to take this opportunity to congratulate Alan and Steve on their awards and for longevity of service to the Balranald Shire. Balranald Central School celebrated its 150 year anniversary of education on 9th and 10th of October. An outstanding achievement for all students, teachers and principals in the School’s history. Congratulations to everyone for all they have done over the years, and congratulations to those people behind the scenes who did a fantastic job pulling it all together. I, along with my wife Dianne, Sgt. Narelle Tucker, and Anthony Stead formed the official party at the 2015 Balranald Netball Club Deb Ball held on Saturday 17th October. On behalf of the official party, I wish to congratulate the Debutantes, who all looked lovely. General Manager Aaron Drenovski and I met with The Hon. Leslie Williams, Minister for Aboriginal Affairs and a number of Senior staff from the Attorney Generals office regarding the closure of the Balranald Local Court on Tuesday 13 October. This matter is still on-going and Council is hoping for a positive outcome.

5 Rivers Outback Festival a Winner!

Balranald Central School's 150th Celebration was a huge success with hundreds of people visiting the school on Friday 9th and Saturday 10th of October to partake in the celebrations. Past students and teachers from the 40's through to the 00's came from all over Australia, including Perth, Darwin and the East Coast of Australia.

Visitors enjoyed spending the afternoon catching up with each other, viewing a display of photos and memorabilia in the school hall and being taken on tours of the school. Students entertained the crowd in the afternoon followed by bush

dancing and the evening finished with the "Greenham’s" playing their greatest hits.

Saturday started with bacon, eggs and pancakes and more time to tour the school and renew old acquaintances. There was an official tree planting and a ceremonial burial of a time capsule. Morning tea followed and group photos in the library. Celebrations then moved to the 5 Rivers Festival at the Caravan Park.

The 150th Committee would like to thank all individuals and organisations that contributed to the success of this celebration.

Pictured above cutting the 150th Anniversary cake: Marie Tucci (who at 94 years of age is the oldest BCS student), 2015 School Captains, Kate Norton and Aaron Gervasi and the youngest BCS students Alayna Dalton, Billy Renfrey and Landyn Jones.

Balranald Discovery Centre & Outback Geo Adventures

FINALISTS IN THE NSW TOURISM AWARDS!

It’s been a wonderful year for Tourism in Balranald, especially the Discovery Centre.

In August this year, the Discovery Centre won Bronze in the category for New Tourism Business at the Inland Tourism Awards, and now the popular Centre along with local tour operator Outback Geo Adventures will represent Balranald as Finalists in the NSW Tourism Awards.

A great achievement for Balranald.

A big weekend was held on Friday 9th and Sunday 11th October with Festival organisers Balranald Inc reporting that all the Festival events were very well attended with a large crowd rocking the Balranald Caravan Park on the Saturday evening at the very popular Riverbank Bash.

Friday activities revolved around the Balranald Central School’s 150th Anniversary celebrations which was hugely popular and a

wonderful success. Local retailers were also well patronised with their colourful store-front stalls attracting a great crowd during Friday Market Day and over the weekend. On Saturday and Sunday the Cooking and Craft Show, organised by Connie Rasmussen was very well received and attended. The Art and Antique Fair included a valuer on-site and organised by Jan Lawler, Val Bradbury and the Gallery team also reported a large attendance.

The Riverbank Bash went off with a bang with the Open MIC session showcasing some very talented local performers as well as some good fun with the Outback Games! Saturday night was a huge success with great entertainment from Paul DeAraugo, Amber Joy Poulton and fabulous local talent Daniel Barrett, John Curran and Overdraft. The Sunday Fair drew a big crowd which included market stalls along Market Street and entertainment at the Discovery Centre.
