Balranald Shire residents will have the opportunity to celebrate Australia Day at Balranald and Euston this Saturday January 26, 2013. In Balranald, Greenham Park will be a hive of activity with a free barbeque breakfast commencing at 8.30am followed by the official ceremony and Award presentation. The celebrations will continue at the Euston Recreation Reserve at 12.30pm with a free barbeque lunch, official ceremony and Award presentation. A highlight of the celebrations will be the address by the Shire’s Australia Day Ambassador well known actor Jeremy Kewley. From his professional debut at the age of 14 in The Devil’s Playground (1975), followed by Mad Dog Morgan (1976), through to his lead role as American film producer Jerry Goldman in the upcoming motion picture Frank & Jerry (2013); and performing around Australia on stage in the national tour of West Side Story (2010-2011), actor Jeremy Kewley has enjoyed a solid and diverse career in the entertainment industry. Jeremy has starred in Underbelly files: Tell Them Lucifer was Here, Stingers, Blue Heelers, Bellbird, Arcade and Janus.
Secure your load…...
Council’s Director Infrastructure and Development, John Stevenson, would like to remind residents of the Shire to cover and / or secure their car and trailer loads when travelling to the tip.
Residents have been observed travelling to the tip with unsecured loads escaping from their vehicles. This creates not only a safety issue for those travelling behind, but also debris and litter blowing all over the township.
Failure to secure your load will result in a fine being issued by Police

NEW SMOKE-FREE

Council wish to inform residents of new anti-smoking laws that came into effect in NSW on Monday 7th January 2013. This means smokers can no longer light up in the following outdoor public places:
In public playgrounds within 10 metres of
children’s play equipment;
In open areas of public swimming pools;
In major sporting facilities and at public
sports grounds;
At public transport stops and stations;
Within 4 metres of the pedestrian access
point to a public building; and
From 2015, commercial outdoor dining
areas.
This is a self-regulatory process. Smokers must comply and in doing so consider the health of others in the immediate vicinity.

Happy New Year and welcome to the first edition of Council’s 2013 Newsletter. The Balranald Buy local campaign, a promotion organised by Balranald Retailers, was a great way to give the local businesses a boost, with Sarah Old, owner of Sair’s Sport and Surf reporting that the promotion was very successful. Shopping in Balranald provided an opportunity to be in the running to win some fantastic prizes. There were fifteen $100 hampers prizes, and four major hampers prizes valued at over $1,000 each. As the 2012 Balranald Buy Local campaign came to a close on December 23, Santa was on hand at the Senior Citizens courtyard to draw out the lucky winners and have his photo taken with the children. The four lucky winners were Ron Coates, Lisa McNiven, Bev Glen and Lee Griffiths. Congratulations to all who organised and supported this campaign. Locals and visitors had much pleasure driving around looking at the Christmas decorations. Some people went to extraordinary efforts with decorations and lights. New Year’s Eve at Greenham Park was something very special. The fun, family night with a jumping castle, climbing wall, spinning wheel, music and barbecue was enjoyed by all who attended. The night concluded with the spectacular fireworks display. Appreciation and thanks go to Kylie Jolliffe and her small group of helpers. Thank you to those who gave their time to establish the glimmer garden and surrounds at the new Bidgee Haven extension. We are all very proud of your efforts. Congratulations go to the Balranald Licensed Pumpers, who arranged with Mr John Williams MP, Member for Murray Darling to meet with Mr David Harris, Commissioner for Water NSW, to discuss matters in relation to water issues in our Shire and making a visit to the Balranald low level weir possible.

Promotional Opportunities for
the Shire Council is continuing to embrace tourism with the recent release of the new Balranald Shire Visitor Guide, the design and installation of billboards and participation at the 2013 caravan and camping shows in Adelaide and Melbourne.
The 32 page full colour visitor guide contains information on the Balranald area, from festivals and events, historical places to visit, and the diversity of our national parks and reserves, to places to stay and eat. The production of the guide has been supported by our local operators and Riverina Red Gum funding, and was identified as a strategic activity in Council’s Tourism and Marketing Strategy. In December, two 6m x 3m promotional billboards showcasing Balranald and Yanga National Park were installed on the Sturt Highway (5km from town) and on Yanga Way (9km from town). Planning for the Adelaide Caravan and Camping Show (February) and the Melbourne Caravan and Camping Show (March) is well underway. This year the exhibits will be branded “Balranald” Outback NSW. “As a growing destination for people looking to engage in natured based activities, it is important to showcase the Shire, and consumer shows are the perfect place to inform potential visitors of the many activities and attractions the area has to offer” said Council’s Director of Economic and Community Development Robyn Ryan. “Tourism is a vital part of our economy, and expanding our tourism industry means visitors are spending locally, which in turn creates greater employment opportunities. Everyone benefits”, Ms Ryan added.

Happy New Year!
A great night was had by all who attended the New Year’s Eve celebrations at Greenham Park.
The children were kept well entertained with activities including a climbing wall, jumping castle and glow sticks, whilst the not so young tried their luck on the spinning wheel with great prizes on offer generously donated by local businesses. Great music and a barbeque added to the festivities at the park. At midnight a spectacular 15 minute fireworks display concluded the night.
