The Balranald Interagency Network Services Expo was held on Wednesday 27 May. The expo was held to inform the Balranald Community of current services available in Balranald, such as Community and Rural Health facilities, Advocacy, Families NSW, Legal services, Ageing, Disability and Home Care, Community Support Services, Rural Financial Counselling, Indigenous facilities and support, just to name a few.
Even though only a minor group of locals came over to source this important information, the service providers deemed the expo a success, as they had the opportunity to liaise together in an ‘open mic’ style forum to exchange information about the ser-vices they offer.
The Interagency Network are hoping to hold this expo every two years, and I hope to see many more community members attend in future.
Friday 12 June saw the Southern Cross Replica reach Balranald. The “Friends of the Southern Cross" team were happy to see the replica of Sir Charles Kingsford Smith's famous Southern Cross aeroplane arrive and the town was abuzz with many locals watching it's arrival.
It is currently housed to complete restoration works.
With the coming of winter brings wood fires and gas heating. I urge you all to heed all safety precautions and stay safe during this period. It can take just three minutes for a fire to take hold, but only seconds to prevent one.
Don't leave you and your family's fire safety to chance this winter; do your safety checks such as maintain your heating appliance - check the flue or chimney for blockages or gas lines for leaks.

FRUIT FLY UPDATE Controlling fruit fly is everyone's responsibility
Fruit fly is still here in our region in heavy numbers, and we all need to do our part to control it so it doesn't destroy the fruit industry.
Council has recently had queries regarding fruit fly in and around the area, and would like to remind households to stay alert.
Council thanks those who have taken precautions with their fruit trees, but need to remind you that you must keep persisting and be observant. Fruit fly is still in and around the area and without your help, may destroy the fruit industry and spread further.
As a home gardener you have a
vital role to play in controlling fruit
fly and preventing it from
spreading. Caring for your fruit
trees and disposing of fruit
properly can protect your home
grown produce as well as help
reduce the economic impact of
this pest.
You should regularly inspect your
fruit for larvae (maggots), which are
more likely to be detected than the
adult flies. You will need to cut
open some fruit to check for the
maggots because infested fruit
may appear to be fine from the
outside.
Female flies will lay eggs in
ripening fruit and the maggots
hatch from the eggs and burrow
into the fruit and destroy it.
If you find larvae in your fruit:
Remove it before it has a chance
to fall to the ground. Collect any
fallen fruit immediately and place
it in a plastic bag, seal the bag
and either leave it in the sun for 5
to 7 days or place it in a freezer
for two days. This will destroy the
maggots and prevent adult flies
from developing. The bagged
fruit can then be put in your
garbage bin for the normal bin
collection.
Suggested fruit fly control
strategies can be found on the
The Draft National Fruit Fly
strategy website, located at
http://preventfruitfly.com.au/
guide/control-strategies/
For further information, please
don’t hesitate to contact Council
on 5020 1300.

Yanga National Park welcomes new
Discovery Ranger
Yanga National Park welcomes Marty Kendall, pictured below, as the new Discovery Ranger. Marty replaces Nikki who has moved on to further her Yoga training. Marty will be responsible for running guided tours and other visitor activities and has come from running school excursions in Melbourne’s Botanic Gardens. Anyone interested in bringing a group to Yanga can contact the Park office on 5020 1764 to make arrangements.
Waugorah Bridge Closed
Wakool Shire Council have assessed Waugorah Creek Bridge and found it to be structurally unsound. As a result the bridge has been closed which means that Woolpress Bend picnic area and camp grounds at the top of Yanga are inaccessible. It also means the domestic firewood collection site is cut off.
Domestic Firewood Permits at Yanga National Park
National Parks have notified current domestic firewood licence holders and arrangements are being made to provide an alternative firewood collection site. Anyone wanting a permit should contact the park office on 03 5020 1774 to register your interest and staff will notify you once firewood is available.
It is best not to grow fruit trees unless you are prepared to carry out the appropriate spray programs and regularly destroy all infested and fallen fruit.

Balranald Police Update
Narelle Tucker, Sergeant On the 13th April 2015 a truck lost its trailer on the corner of Market and Mayall Streets in Balranald. Police would like to sincerely thank everyone who attended so quickly and assisted us. It was pleasing to see the Shire workers attend the scene so promptly and commence traffic control. Jimmy Smithers, Arthur Nelson, Burt Lansdown and Rex Scott also attended to help, which was ideal especially with their trucking experience. George Gerkens was quickly on the scene with a crane to lift the trailer up so the prime mover could hook it back on. Balranald Police would like to remind everyone if you see or hear anything suspicious please contact Balranald Police or 000 immediately. You can also contact Crimestoppers and make anonymous reports on 1800 333 000.
