Mayor’s Office

Happy New Year and welcome to the first edition of Council’s Newsletter for 2014. The 2013 Balranald Buy Local campaign, a promotion organised by the Balranald Retailers Association, was again a great success, and by all accounts, many local businesses received a well deserved boost, while shoppers had the opportunity to win some fantastic prizes. The campaign came to a close on December 23 in the

courtyard of the Senior Citizens Centre with festivities

including a free jumping castle, photos with Santa,

donuts, fairy floss, gift wrapping, sausage sizzle and the

final major prize draw.

The lucky winners of the major prizes were Lance

Griffiths, Terry Eade and Phoebe Parsons. Weekly

minor draw winners were Connie Rasmussen, Gerri

Coates, Tamera Barrett, Simon Coelli, Melody Trotter,

Elaine Campbell, Jaime Smyth, Lyn Pearce, Lily Dunn,

Mark Volleberg, Janet Barrett, Therese Comitti and Sue

Giansiracusa. Congratulations to all who organised and

supported this campaign, in particular special thanks to

Sarah Old for her efforts.

On another positive note, thank you to all of the people

who made a conscious effort to comment to Council staff

about the Christmas decorations in Balranald and Euston.

It was also wonderful to see so many locals and the

businesses getting into the festive spirit by decorating

their homes and shops.

New Year’s Eve celebrations at Greenham Park was yet again another fun, family night and enjoyed by all who attended. Activities included laser tag, a jumping castle, spinning wheel, music and barbecue and conclusion with the spectacular fireworks display. Appreciation and thanks go to Kylie Jolliffe and her small group of helpers. The newly formed Western Catchment Management Authority held their first formal meeting in Balranald in late December. Chairman, Thomas Hymes, CEO Rob Gregory and the board are keen for Council and the community to have input into the new organisation. Yanga National Park continues to attract both locals and visitors, and with water in Yanga Lake and the upgrade of Regatta Beach completed this is a great recreational and tourism asset for our community. Late last year the Acting General Manager Robert Rayner and myself visited several Ministers in Sydney in relation to issues pertaining to the Shire.

Be water wise during the heat

Another successful New Years Eve celebration was enjoyed by all who attended Greenham Park for the festivities.

Entertainment included laser tag, jumping castle and glow sticks, whilst the not so young tried their luck on the spinning wheel with great prizes on offer generously donated by local businesses. Great music and a barbeque added to the festivities at the park and at midnight a spectacular 15 minute fireworks display completed the night and saw in the new year.

Pictured right is Peter Murphy, Tamara Bax and Tyler Scott enjoying laser tag.

Changed Traffic Conditions

Residents are advised that NO U TURN signs have been installed at the following intersections in Balranald:

Market and We Street

Market and Mayall Street

A driver must not make a U-turn on a road where a

No U-Turn sign is displayed

If you have any queries regarding the new traffic conditions, please contact Balranald Police on 03 5020 1404

During this time of the year, and especially during the heat, Council advises residents to be water wise and health conscious.

Leave watering times to early in the morning or late at night. Watering your lawn or plants during the heat of the day or when they are in direct sun will only be a waste of your time and water.

Not only is most of that water evaporating before it even hits the ground or getting into the plant, much of what does hit the ground is evaporating because of the high temperatures in the upper soil levels. It can also possibly kill the lawn or plants.

Council also advises residents that staying cool and hydrated during times of heat is of utmost importance so please stay vigilant and take care of yourself and loved ones.

Stay indoors if possible and keep hydrated and cool by drinking plenty of water along with sports drinks or other sources of electrolytes, and dress in cool free-flowing clothes.
