MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD

A brief word from me to wish you a Merry Christmas! I am sure that I am the first to do so this year! Reading through this issue of the newsletter I have been staggered once again by the endeavour shown by our students and reflected in its pages. National success at Greenpower, engagement in a wide range of school activities like work experience and author visits, masses of sport and recently a fantastic response to our Christmas box charity drive with 180 boxes. We hear so much about how Christmas is not special anymore and how young people are materialistic and do not care for others, but here is proof positive that not only is the Christmas spirit alive, but that young people are prepared to think about those less fortunate than themselves. A final piece of news is that we have been astonished by the demand for places on the Latin course (over 50 at the time of writing) and we are planning how to manage so many students. A further example of student attitudes that defies the popular view – advertised as difficult and requiring perseverance and tenacity, but receiving dozens of volunteers. Although a few weeks away, I wish you all a happy and peaceful Christmas 2011.

Chipping Sodbury School achieves National Success in the Greenpower Challenge

On 16th October four of Chipping Sodbury’s Greenpower cars took part in the national final of Greenpower at Goodwood motor circuit having earned their place taking part in races around the country. Greenpower is a national electric car racing competition in which over 200 schools around the country take part. There are three competitions in total: Goblins, Formula 24 and Formula 24+. ‘Goblins’ are for primary school students, ‘Formula 24’ is for secondary school students and 'Formula 24+' is for 6th formers and college students . The idea of Greenpower is for students to design, build and race their own electric powered cars at top race circuits around the country with the help of their sponsors. This promotes engineering within the school community. As a technology school, Chipping Sodbury has done very well with this Greenpower challenge. There are four teams within the school with five cars in total – The Pod movement (with R-PodS and BY-Pod), Rotary Racer, Chain Reaction and Alderley Express. The first four of these cars took part in the race. R-PodS took part in the Formula 24+ race where they managed to take 2nd place with a total of 50 miles in the 90 minute race. Matthew Hunter drove this car, and the victory on this day meant that R-PodS took 1st place for the national championship of Formula 24+ beating teams from Jaguar Landrover and Bentley Motors amongst others. BY-Pod managed to clinch 4th place in the Formula 24 race completing 108 miles in the four hour endurance race. This team was in 2nd for most of the race but unfortunately dropped down to 4th in the last few seconds of the race. The team members for the Pod movement were Matthew Hunter, Felix King, Louis King, Isabelle King, Aaron Holbrook and Harry Elliot. Chain Reaction also sped around the course managing to climb from 49th to 21st – an excellent achievement by Angus Braithwaite, Conor Powell, Jason Blue, Oscar Nelson, Mary-Jayne Powell, Adam Blue, Jack Lovell and Alex. Due to this, Chain Reaction managed an excellent mileage of 91.2 miles. Finally, last but by no means least, Rotary Racer managed to clinch 1st place in the Formula 24 race completing a total of 120 miles! Their drivers were Dan Dando, Gareth Barnaby, Ben Miller, Thomas Allington and Dawn Barnaby. Steph Dando, Louise Barnaby, Michael Lockyer and Jacob Lucas were the pit crew for the day, doing a fantastic job of getting the car pitted in 42 seconds at times. This fantastic achievement is a huge credit to the school and community. Chipping Sodbury School is now the home to the top two Greenpower cars in the country having competed against over 200 schools that take part nationally. Now the teams are looking to the future with ideas for new cars and designs. Hopefully this success will be repeated in the years to come. Many thanks to all of our sponsors that helped us achieve this success. Please visit the Rotary Racer website at www.greenpower.beamweb.co.uk/RotaryRacer, the official Greenpower website at www.greenpower.co.uk, the Pod movement's website at www.thepodmovement.blogspot.com and another Pod movement website at www.picasaweb.google.com/thepodmovement.

Chipping Sodbury School Friends All parents/carers of students at Chipping Sodbury School and all staff, teaching and non-teaching are members of the Friends. The aim of the Friends is to help to make the school the best learning environment for the students. This is done firstly by promoting social events which help to help to strengthen communication and links within the school community, in particular by further developing good relationships between students, parents, staff and anyone associated with the school in the wider community. Secondly by supporting the students’ educational activities and thirdly by raising money to buy resources which all the students can use in school but which cannot be provided from the school’s statutory budget. The Friends is run by an elected Committee who co-ordinate these by meeting at least once per term to discuss the organisation and running of events and the needs of the school. They are assisted by excellent input from the staff as well as, when appropriate, seeking the views of the students. The committee meetings are informal, friendly but purposeful and are open to all parents and staff, they alternate between being held in the school library and a local pub. All the committee would welcome new faces - some of the current ones are quite old! We are always open to new ideas to help support the education of all our youngsters at Chipping Sodbury School and to have some fun along the way. As mentioned above, all parents of students at Chipping Sodbury School and all members of staff at the school are members of the Friends and are entitled to be elected to join the committee. If you are interested in finding out more and/or helping out, please contact us on [email protected] Recent Event: As usual on Remembrance Sunday the Friends provided refreshments for those participating in the Easy Runner Sodbury Slog. This is one of the top cross country races in the country attracting around 1300 runners who cover a gruelling, muddy course. The Friends ensure there is a hot drink and warm food waiting for those who want them when they return and, this year, raised over £700 to benefit our students. Future Events: We are planning to re-launch the 100 Club in January 2012. This is an opportunity for winning money and supporting our students’ education at the same time. For just £12 a year per number (£1 a month) you will be entered into a monthly draw. If 100 people join there are three cash prizes of £25, £15 and £10 to be won every month. If fewer people join the monthly prizes will be small-er - so the more the merrier! Further details will follow in the New Year. Film Club – we are planning to trial a film club in school in the New Year. We will be able to show films in the school a few weeks after general release for a small entry fee and will be seeking views from students and others about what they would like to come and see – WATCH THIS SPACE Finally: HOW TO GET RID OF OLD UNIFORM. If you still have some old uniform and don’t know what to do with it, please send it in to school for the attention of the Friends. We are aiming to collect this and other resources from school to send out to a school in The Gambia to benefit youngsters less fortunate than our own. Thanks from the Friends Committee for your donations.

My week with the Army – by Charlotte White Over the week before half term I did a course with The Band of the Royal Corps of Signals at Blandford Camp. Once I had arrived at the camp I was issued with my uniform which was a combat uniform. I then had to iron my kit and there was only 1 iron and ironing board between 7 people! On the first day I was woken up at 6:30 am to be ready by 7:00 am. Once I was ready, I then had to march to breakfast, which I found very hard to get the hang of at first! Then we had room inspections after breakfast and some of the boys’ beds were thrown out of the window because they were not made properly. Once the boys had remade their beds we then had to drill. This is when we learnt how to halt as a group and do things like an ‘about turn’.

We then got to play with the band for a couple of hours which was my favourite bit. After lunch we went outside and had some lessons in camouflage. We took it in turns to hide in the woods and the others had to find us. After we cooked our own tea from a ration pack which did have some nice food in but most of it was awful. My chicken and tomato pasta tasted like toothpaste! In the evening, after dark, we put what we had learned into practice. We had to go into a field and find out information about the enemy (some of the band members were playing the part of the enemy) and find what they were planning to do without being caught. Throughout the week we did the same activities each morning until lunchtime. On the second day in the afternoon we did command takes. We were given a practical situation and we had to work out how to solve it as a team. Some people came out with strange ideas which were very interesting. We tested out some of the ideas. Day three in the afternoon we did a PFA which is a Physical Fitness Assessment. For this I had to do 22 press ups in two minutes whereas the boys had to do 50. I had to do 50 sit ups in 2 minutes the same as the boys and I had to run a mile and a half in 13 minutes or under. The boys had to do it in 10 minutes or under. I found this very hard and managed 34 press ups, 7 sit ups and managed my mile and a half in 14:52! On the fourth day we went to Kneller Hall. When we arrived we had a presentation about life in the army. We then had a guided tour around and looked at their museum. It was very interesting and I found out a lot that I didn’t know already which has helped me be sure that a musician in the forces is the job I want. On the final day we did a small parade and played a couple of pieces. I was very nervous when we were doing the parade as I did not want to be the one to mess it up for everyone!

In the end it went really well and everyone was impressed. The Drum Major said that what we had achieved in a week would have taken some soldiers a couple of weeks! The most enjoyable things for me were playing with the Band and playing and marching with the Marching Band. At the end of the course we were given an assessment card and I had only dropped 4 points from the maximum possible. I am absolutely certain that I want a career as a Forces Musician. I was really pleased when they said that musically I was at the standard required and just needed to improve my fitness.

U15 Girls’ Football v Brimsham – Tuesday 11th October The U15 (Y9 & 10) played a very competitive fixture against Brimsham this week. The girls were 4-0 down at half time. This was due to a few early defensive errors with three goals being conceded in the first 15 minutes. After half time, Chipping Sodbury played like a totally different team. Kyra Bishop moved into defence and together with Amy Bassett made some great challenges. There were two second half chances on goal for Sophie Kelly and Grace Rumble who were fantastic at getting the ball forward. Abi-Minett-Searle and Shannon Simmons held the ball up well in midfield. Lauren White © went into goal at half time and made some fantastic saves, tipping the ball over the bar on two occasions and was awarded Player of the Match for her performance. Other squad members included: Kyra Bishop, Emily Gravell, Amy Bassett, Abi-Minett-Searle, Grace Rumble, Shannon Simmons, Sasha King, Sophie Kelly, Abbie Woodington and Kiera Morris. Thank you also to Gemma Rallison and Sophie Sawyer for their help with the match. Miss Kirkum The following girls’ football tournaments are also coming up: Y7 5 a-side tournament at Bradley Stoke on Thursday 1st Dec - Finals on Thursday 8th Dec at Grange. U16 (Y9 10 & 11) 11 aside at Grange Tournament on Wednesday 7th March U14 (Y7, 8 & 9) 11 aside at Grange Tournament on Thursday 8th March Year 8 Rugby World Cup Tournament – Monday 17th October The squad travelled to Abbeywood for a Rugby World Cup Tournament where we competed in a group pool stage against Hanham, Castle and Winterbourne International. The boys played well and battled hard in windy and cold conditions scoring a handful of tries. We got through the group stages and played in the ‘Plate’ side of the draw against Abbeywood and Yate International where we won both of our games by at least three tries and as a result brought home the winning “Plate”. Squad members included: Luke Butters (captain), Dan Deacon, Ash Dann, Charlie Ross, Jack Laney, Jack Oaks, Harry Barber, Joe Bond (Man of the match), Ewan Long, Nathan Ward Well done to all the boys Man of the match- Mike Evans Mr Whitfield Sports Performers of the Month The following students have been voted as Sports Performer of the Month due to their fantastic attitude and some great sports performances. Chipping Sodbury v Bradley Stoke Tuesday afternoon, 11th October, saw the visit of Bradley Stoke ‘Under 16 Rugby Team’ to Chipping Sodbury School. This was the second fixture for our Under 16 boys, who had narrowly lost out to YIA in a well fought game. Mitch Hale, Harri Elliott and Ryan Liddington were all making their debut for the under 16 team and it was Ryan Liddington who was first to make an impression on the game. Within 20 seconds Bradley Stoke had kicked off; the ball was caught and passed down the line to where Ryan was standing. On receiving the ball, Ryan cruised past helpless Bradley Stoke players who could not keep up with him. Within 38 seconds Chipping Sodbury were in the lead! What a start… The early success seemed to have a detrimental effect on our team, as we lost concentration and let Bradley Stoke score three unanswered tries. This was partly down to some poor tackling and lack of communication. Angus Braithwaite (who ran powerfully throughout the game) scored a try just before the whistle to give a half time score of 12-17 to Bradley Stoke. A few stern words were said at half time and a couple of changes made. Our boys knew that this was a game they could win, they just needed to do the basics right. Nearly the whole second half was spent in the Bradley Stoke ‘22’. Powerful and ferocious rucking from Mike Evans, Alex Frampton-Mills, Ben Melling and Nic Hambly not only helped Sodbury to keep possession of the ball but also worried the opposition. But really seemed to change the game was what can only be described as a ‘monster’ tackle by Adam Febry on their full back which really motivated the Sodbury team. Finally the breakthrough in the second half was made with the backs excellently passing down the line to Ryan Liddington who scored to put Sodbury level. With six minutes to go Ryan made it a debut never to forget as he ran in for his third try of the match, which he then converted from a tight angle. Sodbury were ahead 24-17 and although the score was close, we never looked like giving Bradley Stoke any hope of a come back. The best individual moment came from Alex Agius who picked the ball up close to his own posts. He started to run and what a run it was. He broke through numerous tackles, side stepped a couple of defenders and was only denied an amazing try by a last ditch tackle- if only he didn’t run diagonally the whole way he would have made it. We scored again from the resulting scrum which gave the final score of 31-17. A brilliant game, a deserved win and hopefully we can take this performance into the ‘Bristol Schools Tournament’ in two weeks. Well done Year 11! Year 13 BTEC Sport Daniel Jones, Millie Dean, Dan Clement & Neal Harris leading groups of St John students as part of their current unit of work. The visitors were engaged in a variety of activities over a few weeks, which were planned and led by our students. These sessions were enjoyed by all, the leaders demonstrating skill and imagination in their plans.

Christmas Shoe Box Appeal Nearly 200 impoverished Romanian children will have a brighter Christmas this year thanks to the generosity of Chipping Sodbury School students. The school is supporting the Eleanor Children’s Charitable Trust, based in Rangeworthy, which for more than 20 years has been delivering aid to the poorest parts of Europe. This year, around 180 Chipping Sodbury students and some staff have been collecting gifts, sweets, clothes and toiletries, placing them in a brightly wrapped shoebox then passing them on to the trust for delivery next month. Students had set themselves a target of 100 boxes but this has been nearly doubled. Thanks to everyone who contributed to this very worthwhile cause. Mrs Strange Frome House Coordinator
