Sixth Form News… brought to you by the Year 12 Editorial Team Karate Star John Oliver, a Year 13 student, is the star of karate as he has not only achieved a well deserved black belt last July after nine years of training, but he has also been chosen as part of the England team, and will next year head for Japan in order to compete in the championship. His training takes place every week, but as well as improving his own skills, he also helps train younger karate students, which is certainly something to be proud of! He describes his activity as “hard work” and it took him a long time to achieve his black belt however he feels very good about it and what he does as “awesome”. He has proved not only to himself, but to others around him as a very worthy candidate for the championship, and we all wish him good luck.

Louise Harvey 12ACT I have been practicing Wado Ryu karate for 9 years now and I have reached 1st Dan (as you know I wrote an article in CS2 before on passing my 1st Dan). I train twice a week at Yate Leisure Centre, Fridays 8pm-9pm and Saturdays 11am-12pm. I also help teach a class at Brimsham Green School on Wednesdays at 7pm - 8pm. If you’re interested please do tell me, new blood is welcomed! I have been currently training with the England Karate Squad for two years now, and I have been selected along side my partner to fight in the Japanese National and International competitions next year in August. At the age of 18 and a young 1st Dan, I am very honoured to be chosen to represent my country. I have reached the biggest stage in the style of karate I do. Unfortunately Wado Ryu or any style of karate is not in the Olym-pics because there are just too many! This massive opportunity means I will increase my training by 2 ses-sions, so in total I will be doing 5 a week! I will travel between, my home club and 3 others around the area. This will hopefully improve my technique and ability for competition fighting. It will be a tough journey but doing the hard work will get me there!

John Oliver Mathematics Olympiad Entrant On Thursday the 4th December, Matthew Daniels (Year 13) competed in the British Mathematics Olympiad Round 1. All Mathematics students in the sixth form are considered to be Gifted and Talented, so they take part in the National Maths Challenge. Those who do well receive a Bronze, Silver or Gold Certificate, for achieving a certain grade; however, Matthew did exceptionally well and qualified for the next tier of the chal-lenge. For Round 1 he had to take part in a three and a half hour exam, answering 6 questions. Matthew was available for comment, and said "It was fairly enjoyable and I'm quite confident of doing well, even though the questions were rather hard". If he qualifies he enters the European Olympiad. We wish Matthew the best of luck with the rest of the challenge.

Jordan Cann 12JLE Life Skills Day On Thursday 4th December 2008 students of Chipping Sodbury School were delighted to hear that their morn-ing would consist of Student Voice questionnaires to complete, with students from Mathematics and Sociology analyzing the results. This was a great opportunity for students to discuss and air their views.

The next day the Sixth form had a bit of fun in the morning with a memory game in the drama hall. They then completed a task to put together a booklet called Sixth Form Study Skills which will help students get the best out of their time in the sixth form at Chipping Sodbury School. After this exciting morning the students were in for a bigger treat as they were all taking part in a treasure hunt around Yate and Chipping Sodbury. The teams ranged from 6 – 8 people and were all given the same ques-tion sheets to find the answers. The victorious group of Brad, Jordan, Sam, Chloe, Lora, Georgie and Frankie worked well together and won the treasure hunt in an epic battle. They won by a single point thanks to ol’ Jack Russell. The Prize was a box of celebrations which the team shared as it was a group effort for the win.

Access to Bristol Course Within the Sixth Form, we students are provided with many fulfilling and rewarding opportunities with regards to our Further Education. Two of the members of sixth form, Callum Warren and Sam King (Year 12), were recently given the chance to experience the University of Bristol on a speciality scheme called ‘Access to Bris-tol’. The scheme is an initiative that provides local students with an unprecedented opportunity to experience life at the University of Bristol, gaining access to its academic expertise and facilities. Callum has been, and will be doing a short course in Law while Sam is highly interested in experiencing Biomedical Sciences. Callum described the scheme as “a great way to understand what University will be like” and Sam commented that “It’s made me even more eager to go to University.”

Laura Horton 12ACT Trip to Oxford University Two students from Year 12 have been invited to take the opportunity of spending a day down at Oxford Uni-versity shadowing undergraduates. Marichelle Crick and I have the chance to take part in a mock Oxford-style interview, a workshop on university applications, a visit to Oxford’s world famous Bodleian Library as well as joining an undergraduate in all classes and lectures on the day. Marichelle was delighted about this chance. “It will be a really good opportunity to get a taste of University life and help me make an informed choice whether or not I would like to go to Oxford University.”

Nicola Brown Birmingham Clothes Show Live. On the 6th December 2008, eight sixth form pupils and five staff took the school minibus to the Clothes Show Live in the NEC in Birmingham. We left school at 8am and shopped for an hour before the fashion show started. It was hosted by Dave Berry, and Max, O.B. and Russ from Hollyoaks also appeared on stage. We watched Alesha Dixon perform ‘The Boy Does Nothing’ before the models came on. There were also professional dancers on stage with the models. Some of the fashion was a bit crazy but everyone enjoyed it! We did more shopping after the show and saw Nicky Hambleton-Jones, Stuart Manning (Russ from Hollyoaks) and Jack, Adam and Lara from Shipwrecked ’08. We all had a really great day and a few of us fell asleep on the way back because we were so tired!

Amy Stimpson

Calling all Year 11 students I am in the process of arranging the interview schedule for January. You will receive an appointment at the start of next term. If there are any students who still have an application form please hand it in as soon as possible. Should you have any questions about your application please come and find me in the Sixth Form and we can discuss them. Please remember to talk your application through with your subject teachers and parents. Year 12 Progress Grades Over the past weeks students have been gathering their review grades and comments form their subject teachers. This is an excellent way to start to gauge how they are progressing in their subjects. Design and Technology Faculty News Formula One in Schools Challenge Two teams of Y9 students recently took part in the F1 in Schools Challenge which requires them to design, build and race a CO2 powered model car. The regional final coincided with the annual D&T show and was held at the NEC in Birmingham. Both teams performed well and were a credit to the school. The Sodbury Arrows achieved the best reaction time and their car finished in sixth place during speed trials. During the day the students had the opportunity to look at advanced manufacturing systems and watch a number of CAD/CAM Demonstrations. Mr Mellens Head of Design & Technology Faculty

Year Seven News Year 7 students and staff at Chipping Sodbury School have been filling Christmas shoeboxes for the Eleanor Children’s Charitable Trust. This trust delivers decorated shoe boxes to children in Romania so that they will have some little extras at Christmas time. The students and staff filled the boxes with sweets, toiletries, small toys, stationery and other small gifts and then decorated the boxes with Christmas paper. Many students also wrote a short letter to the recipient of their box telling them a little about themselves. Student Co-ordinator Jo Strange said “Students have worked hard to collect and fill lots of boxes.” She added “We are delighted to be able to help support children in need at Christmas.”

Reviews and Individual Learning Plans By now all parents/carers will have had feedback on their child’s progress in the form of Parents’ evening, Re-views and ILPs. We really value the feedback these occasions offer us and use the information to review our documents and processes. Both the Review data and the ILP go home with a response slip, in order to provide a quick way for parents to give us this feedback and acknowledge receipt. We really do want to have all response slips returned and would ask for your support in the return of these to us or Heads of Learning/ Student Co-ordinators. Additionally, it would also aid our planning, if any families who require two sets of Reviews or ILPs contact their HoL/ StCos and indicate their preference for this to take place. Many thanks and enjoy a peaceful Christmas. Mrs K Rowlands Mrs L Leader Assistant Headteacher Assistant Headteacher

Inclusion Department

The Inclusion Department offers a range of support for students at Chipping Sodbury School. The main strands of our work are • Special Educational Needs Support (SEN) work is with students with Statements and IEPs (Individual Education Plans). • Literacy Support for identified students. We have just started a new reading programme for some of our Year 7 students. Any support you can offer at home in supporting your child’s reading would be excellent. Two mornings a week we run Literacy Progress Units for Year 7 students alongside a paired reading scheme between Year 7 and Year 11 students. • Directed Studies, which offers alternative provision for students, including pre -16 college courses. • Special provision, such as Speech and Language, Re-induction, Classroom Skills, Social Skills, Anger Management and Co-ordination club, also Home work club at lunchtimes. • Whole school Inclusion work including work with Gifted and Talented students. LSU (Learning Support Unit) The LSU offers individual or small group work for students who are either having significant difficulties maintaining their placement in school or who require extensive extra support in some curriculum areas, in particular literacy. This year the Inclusion department has been involved with a group of year 11 students who baked cookies and sold them on a stall at the local Farmer’s Market for charity. They raised a huge £156.00. Inclusion Department Staff

First Aid Can I remind all parents and carers that we do not have a school nurse in school work-ing with poorly students in the day? We have some staff who can administer first aid if required if someone is hurt or injured at school however, if your son/daughter has an injury at home, please use your own GP to administer medical care rather than send him/her into school as we do not have the expertise to deal with this. It is important that all students stay at home if they are unwell and if your son/daughter has sickness or diarrhoea he/she should stay away from school for 48 hours after the last bout. I would be grateful for your support in this matter. Ms K Turner Deputy Headteacher

Year Seven & Eight Camp Thank you for the prompt return of deposits at such a busy time of year. Your child may still apply after the suggested date but of course I cannot guarantee them a place. I will send letters of confirmation to all who have a place during January. Year Seven Camp 3rd – 5th June I am confirming the dates above as I notice the payment slips attached to the letter change the date to 1st – 3rd. All campers need to be deciding their tent sharing groups and whether they are using their own or a school tent. I will collect this information during Term 3. Mrs Broad Camp Leader

Page 14

News of Year Nine Student Voice I have recently carried out a survey of the way Students see each other in the year group. This has shown how highly regarded some of the students are as role models and supporters of other students. We thank and celebrate the efforts of:(some more students will be mentioned on the next newsletter as the survey is still being collated) : Rosie Hillson, Bradley Hughes, Natasha Kilbane, Isabelle King, Clare Pearson, Ellie Quirke, Kerri Sullivan, Lizzie Adsett, Amy Berry, Rebecca Biggs, Sarah Biggs, Daniel Dando, Sophie Morris, Kelly Murray, Abigail Nye, Rebecca Robinson, Charlotte White, Nathan Woolfrey, Gareth Barnaby, Chloe Breaks, Sophie Chamber-lain, Samantha Coles, Jess Cook, Anna Edwards. Zero tolerance The survey has also identified a number of students who seem to be causing low level difficulties in lessons which can disturb the learning, without being too obvious. Whilst we do not wish to unfairly ‘label’ students, this issue needs to be addressed, so there will be a period of ‘Zero tolerance’ in Year 9 lessons following the Christmas break. Teachers will be asked to be especially vigilant in drawing attention to students causing disruption and they will be given only one opportunity to improve. Failure to do so will mean removal from the class and a detention run by the Head of Learning after school. We ask for parental support during this two week period as Students rarely continue with poor behaviour if they realise what the consequences are. It should be possible, following this exercise, to assess whether learning has improved and whether certain students need more support to manage their behaviour. Certain students and their parents will be spoken to before the event so that everyone is clear about the proc-ess. To all Parents/Carers of Year 9, I thank you in anticipation of your support. Mrs J Clark Head of Learning Years 8 and 9

The Staff and Governors of Chipping Sodbury School wish all students/parents/carers

A Merry Christmas & A Happy New Year!

SPECIALIST TECHNOLOGY SCHOOL NEWS

Year 7 Problem Solving Day On Friday 21st November, all of our 180 Year 7 students took part in a cross-curricular problem solving day. The event was led by staff from our specialist school subjects – DT, Mathematics and Science, together with representatives from the Smallpeice Trust, an organisation who work to raise the profile of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) sub-jects. Activities ranged from the construction of energy efficient wind turbines to cracking codes us-ing fire writing in Science and Morse code in DT. Students also tried to solve the mystery of the murder in the Mathematics classroom. Throughout the day, students were ‘problem solving’ using a wide range of techniques. We now hope to collate both the language and the methods of problem solving that were used during the day to begin the process of developing the language of problem solving at Chipping Sodbury School.

Please help Chipping Sodbury School to collect Gen-eration Green leaves by completing an online energy survey for your home at: http://www.generationgreen.co.uk/About/ The leaves can be used to claim energy efficient re-wards including a school weather station.

Congratulations Matthew! Matthew Daniels, a Year 13 student, has qualified for the British Maths Olympiad. Matthew is currently awaiting the results of his latest paper. If his result is good enough then he will qualify for the European Olym-piad. Well done Matthew — an incredi-ble achievement.
