Sports Relief Fair – Friday 23rd March

On Friday 23rd March students and staff all wore sportswear instead of our usual mufti and had a fantastic day raising money! There were prizes for best dressed students at break time, and a group of around 35 students worked together from all the different houses over several weeks to plan and help run our ‘Sports Relief Fair’ at lunch time. The stalls were as follows:

Lucky dip Guess the number of jelly beans in the jar

Wii Dance competition Lucky straw

Face painting Skittles

Staff baby photo competition Marble run game

Guess the name of the teddy Penny roll game

Tombola Nail bar

Easter egg raffle

The students involved made a fantastic effort and the rest of the school came and had fun, whilst contributing towards this fantastic cause! Combined with other activities around £750 was raised so a massive well done to you all! Mrs Emms House Coordinator - Avon House

Drayton Manor Reward Trip Saturday 12th May Thank goodness it was a glorious sunny day when Ms Stone, Mr Wright and I set off for Drayton Manor with 47 Year 7, 8 and 9 students. They were all very excited during the journey, which fortunately is less than 2 hours. On arrival they were able to sample as many rides as their stomachs could take. The queues were short so no opportunity was missed. During the day we saw some very wet students, who wisely rode the water rides early allowing time to dry during the rest of the day. I’m not sure that Amber’s shoes will ever dry though. Mr Wright likes to ride with his arms up to show how cool he is, but even he held on tight briefly as G Force dangled upside down so that it felt as though the supports wouldn’t hold us in.

The students arrived promptly back at the coach clutching souvenirs and photos of their day out.

They were a pleasure to accompany and the coach driver complimented them on their immaculate behaviour.

Well done all of you and thank you to Ms Stone and Mr Wright for giving up their Saturday.

Chipping Sodbury School Friends Film Club The latest Film Club show took place recently and was a great success. ‘The Muppets’ proved to be very popular with young and old alike. A review appears below. The next film will take place on Thursday 21st June and in a change to the usual time, will be after school at 3.45pm. The film to be shown hasn’t yet been finalised but will be advertised in advance around school and on the website. Tickets £3. Mr R Blacker The Muppets Review This was a great movie, balancing an excellent assortment of cheesy jokes and witty punch lines. With

hilarious puns, singing chickens and a spontaneous evil rap, The Muppets has everything you could want in a film. In true Muppet style, there’s hardly a serious moment (the inner turmoil of Jason Segel and his Muppet brother as they struggle to find their true place in the puppet world aside). The soundtrack is brilliant combining comical covers of classic and current hits with original numbers which had the audience in stitches. My highlights had to be the Oscar winning song ‘Man or Muppet’, which featured an appearance from The Big Bang Theory’s Sheldon, and the classic Muppet gags which never get old. It was great to see Kermit and all the familiar characters, but new Muppet, Walter was a welcome addition to the gang. Overall, I really enjoyed the film as did all age groups in the audience at school on Thursday night - well worth a watch. Ali Mansfield Year 13

Ten Tors 2012 – The Final Report The above students took part in the annual Ten Tors expedition on Dartmoor on the weekend of the 12th and 13th May. The teams had two days to cover the distance and had to be completely self-sufficient, carrying all that they needed with them. We arrived at Okehampton Camp at Friday lunchtime and got a bit of a shock at registration – the teams would not have to go through the scrutineering process to have all their kit checked! We had of course checked everything twice before we had left to ensure that all the teams would be able to survive the challenge of the moor. The time at the camp on Friday was spent at the event briefing and planning the route that they would take over the weekend.

The teams at base camp early on Saturday morning.

At 7am on Saturday 400 teams consisting of 2400 young people started the expedition from Okehampton Camp. The weather was excellent for walking with the sun shining, a nice breeze and good visibility, but it was very wet underfoot following the rain that had fallen on the moor in the preceding days.

All the teams waiting nervously at the start, and then they’re off.

The 35 mile team walked well and made it to their sixth tor for their overnight camp. The support staff were able to see them at Black and reported that although they were understandably tired, they were in good spirits. There had been a slight equipment malfunction from one member of the team, but they coped with the rip in their trousers with good humour.

35 Mile Route B

Unfortunately two members of the 45 mile team dropped out at their fourth tor due to injury. The four remaining members of the team then had to carry all the team kit for the rest of the challenge. They were able to get past their sixth tor before the tors closed for the night and camped on the moor between Combestone and Sittaford, apparently being joined by some Dartmoor ponies!

45 Mile Route N

On Sunday morning, both teams set off early to head to the finish and walked steadily through their remaining tors to finish the challenge.

34 hours later: The 35 mile team cross their final Dartmoor stream and the remaining members of the 45 mile team are finally at the finish line!

The teams were presented with their bronze (35 mile) and silver (45 mile) medals at the medal ceremony.

All the students are to be congratulated on the effort, hard work and dedication that they put in to the training walks, which paid off with the success of the teams during the weekend. Saffron Smart also took part in some of the training walks for the 35 mile team. Thanks are due to the following members of the support team for supporting the teams on Dartmoor during the event and throughout their training: Mr Keepax, Mr Bevan, Mrs Bird, Mr Avent, Ms Hilleard, Miss Perumal and Mr Richardson. The weekend can be summed up by the final post on the official Ten Tors 2012 website:

“Sun 13-May-2012 at 20:50:30 - Updated: Ten Tors 2012 is over. After months of training in the cold and wet, including a very much shortened weekend at the end of April, when the moor took as much rain in two days as it might in a month, Dartmoor did what it does best - something completely different - and turned on the afterburners. But you, the class of 2012, did your managers and trainers, your families and supporters - but crucially, yourselves - proud! You shrugged it aside and took your place in the lists of those who've taken on the toughest of challenges, and won!

Simply Outstanding Guys!!”

Visit to the University of Bristol 16th May 2012 On the trip we were given lectures by two men; one of which is the inventor of the micro-chip and a student at Bristol University. We got told about why going to university and studying electronics is a good idea but they also told us that we get to think about the future and what the technology of then is going to be like, then get to design it yourself. During the trip we also got to build electronic cars which had to last as long as they could, and the other how fast it could go. We raced the cars against other schools and fortunately Chipping Sodbury won both competitions! Sophie Gideon Year 9

Fourteen Year Nine students visited Bristol University to explore career possibilities involving Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. They were a credit to the school and as Sophie says, they also won the competition. My thanks to Mrs Stone for accompanying us.
