How incredible is it that we are seven years in the making with over 1,300 salons across North America! 1,663,825.86 pounds of waste have been diverted, we planted an entire forest in British Columbia and offset hundreds of tonnes of carbon emissions through developing countries. We are also grateful for being recognized by the Ministry of the Environment, Earth Day Canada and Green Heroes TV, as well as by the media including CTV, NBC and CBC. We are on a mission to make this industry sustainable, and it's only because of you, our salons, your staff and your guests that we are succeeding. I hope you enjoy this issue of eCouture and all the exciting developments in the Green Circle world!

the teamguess who's who?

shane priceCEO, Founder

Our mission is to make the North American salon industry sustainable by 2020. We are doing this in a way that is affordable and achievable and most importantly, impactful. We believe that over time - and with the help of guests and employees - small steps to transform each salon will make a green conversion possible and sustainable.

We are a movement for positive green change that has substance, style, and creative sprit. Together we work to understand the links between our actions and their consequences on the planet. We see value in sourcing locally and increasing efficiency, and we redirect, recycle, or repurpose materials once destined for landfill.

We are committed to giving back 5% of our pre-tax profits to work with local and international organizations to support programs that create positive social and environmental change.

Green Circle’s hair innovation team has been hard at work this year, pioneering the way to put hair to its best use. We’ve seen firsthand how effective hair is in absorbing oil from water, but we’re not stopping there.

We’re doing the groundwork to begin a dual-focus 2-year study with the University of Victoria. The first goal of this research is to discover how hair mats can filter contaminants from stormwater, keeping our aquifers and waterways cleaner. The hair mats will be tested for their ability to capture hydrocarbons, heavy metals, nitrogen, phosphorus and sediment.

The second goal is to discover how hair, which boasts remarkable tensile strength, can be used to prevent concrete from cracking over time. If hair can help to make concrete more tensile, that means a longer-lasting infrastructure and less concrete in our landfills!

In late August 2016, GCS CEO Shane Price travelled to Indianapolis to attend StormCon, The Surface Water Quality Conference & Expo, where he met with industry leaders

who are seeking harm-free ways to cleaner, better water management systems in municipalities around the world.

As a result, we’ve connected with many like-minded corporations and innovators who share our vision of using hair for a cleaner planet. Most recently, we shipped hair booms to Environmental Development & Sustainability Inc. in Puerto Rico for experimental use in stormwater runoff filtration. Thanks to Sonia Cosme for deploying our booms in her outdoor laboratory. We will continue to donate our booms to Ms. Cosme, and look forward to learning how hair can benefit their local waterways and aquifers.

Lastly, we’re working with an Associate Professor at Virginia Tech to engineer a bio-composite made of hair and plastic. For every gram of hair we can substitute for plastic, that’s one less gram of oil used to create the products we use.

“Just imagine: recycling bins for your salon that are made of hair”It’s clear to us that hair is an amazing fibre with untapped capabilities and purpose. Stay tuned for updates on these and other hair innovations!

carbon offsettingAwe-inspiring landscapes and the majestic creatures who roam them never cease to inspire. Passionate about protecting nature in every capacity, GCS proudly supports Stand For Trees.

Our contribution to Stand For Trees helped to protect endangered forests. This is important because doing so assists in storing carbon, producing oxygen, providing habitat, and supporting local communities.

For each of these near-and-dear initiatives, GCS contributed 13 tonnes of CO2 offsetting:

Known for its passionate green-minded community, Saltspring Island in British Columbia is the perfect setting for The Cob Salon, a project by Samantha Wilson that puts the environment first and promises to be 100% sustainable. Every meticulous detail has been planned with care, including: solar-powered hair dryers, energy-efficient wood-burning stove, cob sinks, reclaimed salon chairs and composting toilets.

The framing/roofing of the salon will be plastered and no paint or dry wall will be used. The building itself will be a unique structure made from cob and hempcrete. Cob is a material that is made from clay, water, straw, and/or lime. Hempcrete is a non-toxic and ecological renewable material made from hemp and lime. It has a negative carbon footprint, which

means that not only does it help to improve the air quality, but it also helps to alleviate the Greenhouse effect.

It is with great pleasure that Green Circle Salons will be participating in the building process of the salon. As we get our hands dirty, we will chronicle the process. Additionally, we will also be donating hair clippings for the wall structure, as hair lends tensile properties.

This exclusively Davines salon is a Green Circle certified member, and of course we’ll proudly be collecting 95% of their waste, including hair, foils, colour tubes, excess haircolour by-product and more.

The Cob Salon will be a one-of-a-kind green salon blazing the trail for a whole new generation of innovation!

Are you passionate about our movement to keep people and the planet beautiful? Have you ever considered working with Green Circle Salons? Know of a salon who may want to join our program?

If so, contact us to learn more! We’ll empower you with the right tools to help you spread the word about our movement and to facilitate positive green change.

No special experience is required, and we reward each referral. We encourage everyone who’s interested to get involved and to make a difference. Everyone can help the planet!

GCS Certified

Spanning across North America, GCS is proud to serve clients who care about the betterment of the planet. Together, we’re committed to promoting sustainable beauty and a green impact that challenges the status quo.

From the beautiful coast of British Columbia and red-soil Prince Edward Island to yours-to-discover Ontario and land-of-the-living-skies Saskatchewan, you’ll find Member Salons in every single Canadian province.

For our American launch in 2014, we began in Chicago. Quickly, we expanded to cover 45 states from Washington to Maine.

A heartfelt thank you to all the salons, manufacturers, and distributors for contributing to our movement for positive green change!

North American salons waste enough bleach & hair colour per year to fill 1,825 dump trucks! By not rinsing this residual hair colour down the drain and instead sourcing more environmentally responsible methods, we are helping to keep our aquatic ecosystems clean and healthy.

Many of his friends in the industry are women. Most of the clients coming into the salon are women. Tony is well- known in the city of Edmonton as well as within the hairdressing community. By participating in Walk A Mile, Tony is raising awareness to the violence that his team, friends and clients might face.
