If you’ve been following my stories lately, you’ll notice that I am writing a lot on Carmel schools. I am now here to report on the School Resource Officers (SRO) within Carmel schools. And in my opinion, it is another reason to 1) Love where we live and 2) Love our Carmel school system.

I spoke with Lieutenant Jeff Horner, manager of the School Resource Unit, and also Sergeant Phil Hobson, supervising officer for the School Resource Unit. I wasn’t sure what to expect from these two officers, but they were friendly, helpful, informative, supportive, caring and generally concerned for the well-being of the students and staff at Carmel schools

(as well as the general public).

Carmel Clay Schools has partnered with the Carmel Police Department to service all schools within the corporation. There are four officers at the high school and one at each middle school. In addition, the SRO’s also provide assistance and support to all elementary schools. “All of the officers are certified with NASRO (National Association of School Resource Officers),” says Sergeant Hobson. “We provide many functions: mentor, educator and law enforcement.” The SRO also partners with the school officials to provide advice, guidance and intervention. “The biggest benefit is the relationship with the kids,”

explains Lieutenant Horner. “The kids really get to know these officers as friends.”

At the beginning of each school year at the high school there are class meetings where Sergeant Hobson introduces his role to the students. “SRO’s are used as a resource for everyone – parents, educators and students,” says Lieutenant Horner. “We are also heavily involved with the administration assisting with lock down drills, general safety, K-9 searches, drug awareness, security, and emergency operation drills.” But most importantly the SRO’s are a part of the crisis response team, helping students with the aftermath of an accident or

Carmel’s own Williams Comfort Air has expanded the geothermalrenewable energy market with their innovative WilliamsVertizontal ground loop installation process. This patent-pendingprocess was introduced in August, 2009 and has undergonecontinuous improvements. Williams Comfort Air offers severalreasons why you should consider geothermal renewable energyand their Williams Vertizontal loop.

Short-Term Savings... Geothermal energy qualifies for anUNLIMITED federal tax credit of 30% of the purchase price.Additional utility rebates are available for many homeowners.

Geothermal Energy Savings… The breakdown of a typicalutility bill shows 50% allocated for heating and cooling andanother 15% for water heating. Geothermal energy provides up tofive units of energy for every one unit of electricity consumed. Asa by-product, it can also heat household water during the summer, requiring no additional expense. A geothermal investment can bereturned in savings in as a little of 5-10 years, depending upon theefficiency of the system that is being replaced.

The Patent-Pending Williams Vertizontal... This ground loopinstallation process is available only at Williams Comfort Air andhas two unique benefits.

Less Property Needed... A Williams Vertizontal loop doesn’trequire as much land. In fact, it has been installed on many localsubdivision lots. Homeowners with a small lot or too many treesnow have the opportunity to “choose green”.

Less Invasive... The Williams Vertizontal can be installed withminimal disturbance to your property. The picture above shows thesmall hole that is required. A video of a Williams Vertizontal loopinstallation can be viewed at GeothermalByWilliams.com on thehome page. There is also a geothermal savings calculator thatprojects your projected savings with geothermal renewableenergy.

For More Information On This New Process… Call Malaina at(317) 660-7901. One of the Williams Comfort Air team memberswill answer your questions about the Williams Vertizontal andconverting your home to geothermal. HVAC License #: H0002400

As Carmel sees rapid growth in population we are seeing parallel growth in the number of churches moving into the area. Interestingly, most of these new churches will not build a new building but will meet in a school or other rented spaces. These types of churches are called “church plants.”

One of the inherent issues of church plants is the lack of meet-ing space for church staff to hold meetings during the week. Many church plants are making use of local coffee shops and eateries to hold meetings, but what about when they need to
