I’m starting a new organization. It’s going to be called the ITPC, or Inadequate Tutoring Parents Club. You can be a member if you have ever tried to help your child or any other student with homework … and failed.

I am going to be president, because I want to make sure that no one who actually remembers how to divide

decimals or explain the scientific method can get in. It’s a matter of principle.

In the past few weeks, I’ve had to shamefully admit to my fifth-grader that I am not a good resource for math and science. While other parents, I’m quite sure, are fearlessly helping their ambitious little learners with mathematical and scientific enlightenment, I can only offer cookies.

I try, oh Lord how I try. I stare at the books while inwardly fighting the dialogue going on inside my brain: Holy Lab Coat, I have no idea what an independent variable is! Quick, think, think, think! Oh, Mr. Krause, my fifth-grade science teacher, please channel your brilliance through my brain and help me retrieve all those lessons you taught me so long ago.

And don’t even get me started on basic geometry. Please … I remember that a square is a square. And I can easily find the area of said square. But when confronted with, say, a rhombus and finding its inside angles … I got nothin’. So alas, I am stuck with a pit in my stomach, and the knowledge that I must trudge to my laptop and Google homework assistance on a regular basis.

Thankfully, I am still quite capable with my second-grader’s homework. I can still recite my basic math facts, and I can assist in locating the earth’s continents with ease. However, there is now something called Rocket Math, which I am

completely oblivious to, and apparently have to go to a special parent’s night at the school in order to learn more about it. Talk about my worst nightmare … sitting in tiny chairs learning about a math technique that is somehow linked to aerospace technology.

My ineptness wouldn’t be so bad if it were not for my husband, who happens to remember every little thing he was ever taught in school. “Oh, I can recite the periodic table in under thirty seconds, just for kicks,” he might say. Even worse, he can identify botanical species with ease and recite their basic properties blindfolded. I barely know what poison ivy looks like.

Proudly, I am able to help with the Language Arts assignments, although when sentence diagrams come into play I may have to call in sick. Perhaps teachers don’t even use them anymore … maybe there is a new technique called something like, “Paragraph Astronomy,” or even worse, “Quantum Writing.”

Whatever it is, I’m quite sure I will continue to be humiliated from now on until my children graduate high school. Which is why I’m forming a club. Care to be a member?

In May 2010, the Carmel community voted to support the pursuit for academic excellence. This financial support saved or added over 80 instructional

positions and reduced class sizes across the board. These numbers are easy to quote, but what do they really mean? Here are three specific examples where the referendum is helping.

Kindergarten Class sizeFor Lynda Vance, kindergarten teacher at Cherry Tree Elementary, it is the little things that matter. Her class size has dropped from 28 students to 18. “Everyone can fit on the alphabet circle rug,” Vance said. The smaller

class sizes make it easier for Vance to dedicate individual time and energy towards each child’s needs through assessments and writing conferences. It even appears that the kids like the smaller classes too. “Students are involved and not so afraid to speak in the smaller group.” With the addition of two more teachers, Vance believes the school has even more experience to draw from. “Teaching is more of a pleasure now,” Vance said, “I am getting to know each student better and making sure they are learning what they need to succeed.”

intervention at Middle sChoolStephanie Welch, Reading Success Teacher at Creekside Middle School, knows intervention is not new to her school. A full-time intervention teacher dedicated all year and solely to students who are struggling academically is

new. “This is a class of very small groups of about three students each who work to improve their reading success.” While the class is usually taken as an elective, most students and parents realize that the time and energy devoted here will be essential to their academic futures. While reading is the center of this intervention class, Welch sees firsthand how the self-help reading methods taught and the progresses made carry over to other areas, especially the essential core classes. Welch said, “Our students are learning to read more fluently and enhancing their text comprehension by having individualized plans where both the student and parents work with me to ensure goals are being met.” Welch believes this class is most successful because “these students can no longer hide among others in fear of being called on; the small groups give them the opportunity to be noticed and that is a huge confidence builder.”

younger by the studio window on Halloween night and

let them give their best guess of how many spiders there

are. The child who guesses correctly will win the grand

prize, a giant Hershey Bar! There is no charge for entry.

begins at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 2, with the arrival of several canoes, paddled by colorful voyageurs whose arrival “from Canada” officially opens the feast.

The two-day event goes on to include re-enactors portraying 18th-century soldiers, French settlers, traders and Native Americans. Many have been coming to the feast for years. They’re careful to provide accurate historical interpretations in their costuming and craftsmanship, as well as in their story lines. The feast also offers period foods, crafts, contests, entertainment and children’s activities. The event is a feast for the senses, and is never held on a Purdue home football weekend.

So, too, is the 10-day celebration of not only fall, but also the large number of covered bridges at the Parke County Covered Bridge Festival (www.coveredbridges.com). This festival, held Oct. 8-17, draws more than 2 million people for a look at the more than 30 covered bridges in the county – the largest concentration in the U.S. – along with guided tours, arts and crafts, antiques, food and entertainment.

There are five bridge routes, each color-coded. They’re easy to follow with the routes marked on color-coded maps and on color-coded arrows posted along each route. Visitors can drive their own vehicles or take narrated bus tours.

Covered bridges evoke a sense of nostalgia in many, spurred on perhaps by Clint Eastwood and Meryl Streep and their 1995 film, “The Bridges of Madison County.” And there’s

the long-standing view that they were “kissing bridges,” where a young man was supposedly entitled to a kiss from his sweetheart as they passed through a bridge where no one could see them.

Truth is, the bridges were covered for purely practical reasons, not romance. Because they were constructed of wood, and wood is vulnerable to rot, the bridges were covered to protect them from the elements and therefore prolong their lives.

The American Society of Civil Engineers estimates that more than 10,000 covered bridges were built in the United States between 1805 and 1885. The vast majority were in the Northeast. Pennsylvania ranks No. 1 in the number of remaining covered bridges, with more than 200. Ohio is second with about 150, and Indiana is third. Of some 600 covered bridges that were built in Indiana between 1835 and 1922, about 90 remain.

fall festivals

The annual Feast of the Hunters’ Moon in West Lafayette features performances by several fife and drum groups, as well as the blessing of the voyageurs — a popular 18th century Indiana ritual.
