Like all parents, Chris Bodurow wants to provide her young son George Erwin with every tool he needs to reach his potential. Chris knew that for George to reach his potential, he needed to improve his ability to focus and increase his attention skills.

Like an athlete that needs specialized physical training to attain a certain level of accomplishment, LearningRx provides specialized training to anyone who wants to improve their attention skills for easier learning.

George is clearly a bright 11-year-old that has a wide range of interests. He says his favorite subjects at Park Tudor are science and French. He also enjoys sports like basketball, baseball and lacrosse and recently participated in Park Tudor’s Summer Stock Theater Academy.

As the increased rigors of sixth grade approached for George, Chris worried that George might not be able perform up to

his potential based on the level of focus that typically he had applied to his previous schoolwork. Chris remembered reading a LearningRx success story some time ago in one of our magazines and decided to enroll George in one of the three month programs. After completing the LearningRx program, both George and Chris are glad she did.

The major improvements that Chris and George have noticed since he completed the LearningRx program is that George is more organized in his thought process. As a result, George says that he noticed that he is better able to multi-task and that he gets his schoolwork completed faster.

Chris said she noticed George has an increased mental acuity and mental stamina. She also commented that she was very pleased with George’s brain trainer at LearningRx in that he did a great job of balancing a rigorous program with knowing when to ease up so that George did not become frustrated or bored. According to Chris, George actually looked forward to coming to LearningRx for the time with his brain trainer.

LearningRx is different from other programs that “tutor” its students. Rather than tutoring on a particular subject, the LearningRx program provides a cognitive framework that people can use for the rest

of their lives.

According to Heather Koenig, executive director and owner of LearningRx in Indianapolis, “Many learning problems are caused by inefficiencies in how the brain actually processes information, things like memory attention and processing speed. We aren’t tutoring which will only offer temporary help if there are underlying cognitive deficiencies. We are brain trainers offering a permanent solution to learning struggles.

“With our initial assessment, we can pinpoint the underlying cause for cognitive deficiencies and create a brain training solution that puts people on the path to learning faster, easier and more efficiently for life. We help children and adults and can assist people with traumatic brain injury, stroke, ADHD, dyslexia, autism, auditory processing disorder, learning difficulty and those who just want to get a sharper competitive edge.”

If you want to give your child or other loved one the tools and training to help them reach their learning potential, call LearningRx for an evaluation appointment today; mention this ad to get $50 off of the initial assessment.

Six years ago, it appeared the final curtain was ready to be dropped on the Carmel Community Players.

Literally.

It was 2009, and the 16-year-old theater group faced countless financial headaches that were much more draining and damaging to the organization’s board of directors than the darkest written review. Debt was climbing toward six figures; a major grant from the City of Carmel vanished; and perhaps most disturbing was the non-profit troupe lost its lease at Studio 15 in the Carmel Arts and Design District.

But as assessed by a CCP executive in 2009, “With adversity comes opportunity.” And sometimes that opportunity can arrive with horns blowing and drums pounding. Such has been the case for the CCP Board of Directors that uncovered a new, unusual and exciting theater at the heart of the modern and upscale Clay Terrace Mall. This Hoosier stage setting sits far from the bright lights

of Broadway in New York as it rests on a former store site at the mall’s U.S. 31 address on the north side of Carmel.

But the unique setting has been registering beyond well for both CCP and Clay Terrace leaders who have been equally thrilled with the partnership, now entering its sixth season. “We believe that our guests and retailers have really embraced the creative talents that [Carmel Community Players] showcase,” said Clay Terrace general manager Jennifer Jones. “The addition of the theater provides the surrounding neighborhoods with access to the cultural aspect of live theater.”

Indeed, the setting of the 120-seat theater can be classified as different, even by central Indiana standards. While Indianapolis claims Massachusetts Avenue and Carmel boasts the Carmel Arts and Design District for arts and theater centers, the Carmel Community Playhouse sits in Suite 140 on Clay Terrace Boulevard at an outdoor mall. CCP converted a scrapbook store into an intimate and astonishingly comfortable theater.

“Clay Terrace has been a wonderful partner,” said Tim Paramore, president of the CCP Board of Directors. “They like that tenants like us provide unique and diverse patron experiences to the mall. They welcomed us six years ago, and we continue to work together on joint marketing efforts.”

From the mall’s viewpoint, that partnership philosophy is perfect strategy to Jones, which believes the theater provides additional business for nearby restaurants. “We see families and friends coming together to enjoy dinner at our Clay Terrace establishments,” Jones noted, “and then take in a performance.”

Paramore has the research to support Jones’ assessment. A survey of visitors to one play last season showed that almost 400 theater patrons – or 56 percent of those in attendance – visited the mall’s restaurants and bars before or after the shows.

However, Paramore realizes that the driving force for the long-term survival of this marriage remains in the successes of the plays and the abilities of the actors, directors and production team. Even though there were four sellouts for recent robust showings of “Club Morocco” and Alfred Hitchcock’s “The 39 Steps,” Paramore concedes there needs to be growth in attendance and sponsorships.

Eventually, Paramore hopes to improve the seating with tiered levels for the chairs and improving the site lines (perhaps by raising the stage). The CCP also hopes to add more than cookies and soft drinks on its intermission menus. Paramore and his team are pursuing beer and wine licenses.

Grants from Carmel helped turn the former scrapbook store into a theater, though site lines can be challenging, and a curtain serves as a wall between the ticket lobby and the acting center. “The grants have helped us modestly expand the budgets on our

productions and make a few improvements to our Playhouse,” said Paramore. “If we had more funding, we would increase our investments in both patron experience items and increase our production budgets for stage building, props and costumes.”

Overall, the new era of the CCP has been a tentative financial winner.“We are very conservative with our finances and adapt our budgets to the funds we have available,” said Paramore. “It would be nice to create a rainy day fund. Right now, we would scramble if it rained too hard. One hundred percent of our [operating] income comes from ticket sales and sponsorships.”

“It constantly amazes me at the level of actor, director and vocal talent that our productions draw,” said Paramore. “The dedication of our volunteers from the production staff is great.”

And a big key to the success of a show comes from the directors, who also are not paid for their efforts. Two of the most skilled performances last season came from local directors Doug Peet and Lori Raffel who crafted entertaining experiences for near-sellout audiences at “August: Osage County” and “The 39 Steps.”

Meanwhile, the 2015-16 schedule offers a wide range of plays, starting with fall showings of standbys “The Lion in Winter” (interestingly, featuring American and not British accents from the monarchy) and Neil Simon’s “The Odd Couple,” again engaging the opposite personalities of Felix Unger and Oscar Madison.

A Christmas show enlists Ken Ludwig’s “‘Twas the Night Before Christmas,” tracking the tales of a mouse, elf and spunky little girl. Also on the calendar are three musicals – “Back to the ’80s,” “Forbidden Broadway Greatest Hits” and “Next to Normal.”

Certainly, top performances have become the calling card of this mall-based community theater.

During our quarterly review with Mayor Jim Brainard, the 6-term mayor shared with us the many benchmarks that the city has achieved or will achieve year’s end.

Keeping our public defenders safe is high on the city’s list of priorities and once again was awarded a federal grant for almost $9,000 to replace old bullet proof vests that are no longer covered under warranty and cost $695 each to replace. The city has received this particular grant since 1999.

Brainard has taken great measures over the last 5 terms to improve the city’s environmental health. The city of Carmel was acknowledged just last month on the popular website, Think Progress, for its round-a-bouts and plans for 30 additional round-a-bouts that will decrease overall car emissions and electricity for traffic lights by 40% by 2040 (Think Progress, September, 15, 2015).

The city’s street projects are well on schedule in spite of several rain dates this spring and summer. INDOT has worked diligently to have the majority of work completed on Carmel’s stretch of U.S. 31 within their original 2-year time line.

“I’m optimistic that they (INDOT) will have all of the traffic lanes open and landscaping to completed by next spring,” Brainard said. “In spite of several wet weather days this construction season that impacted their schedule, they seem to be moving along very quickly and it’s going to be a beautiful project when it’s finished. The city’s street projects are coming along very well. We’ve opened the sections of Main Street, both east and west of U.S. 31. Now, we have our beautiful round-a-bout interchange and it’s handling a lot of traffic already. We were happy to have Illinois Street opened in September.”

A hot topic during the primaries earlier this

year, Brainard gave us an update on the 96th Street and Keystone Avenue project.

“There is a series of steps that have to be accomplished before any major transportation project begins and the city is working through them. The funding, in addition to the design work, is a step that we’ve already taken and the county has granted us a $2 million dollar grant for this project. We are working on a plan to obtain the remaining funding needed and upon completion of this phase, we hope to see construction begin in the summer of 2017. It can be done in one season and without closing the entire intersection.

Recently, Brainard was in Washington D.C. to meet with the Assistant Secretary of Transportation and other officials of the White House for the purpose of applying for infrastructure grant. These are very competitive grants to receive and only about 2-3% of all applications are actually awarded as there is limited funding available. After several meetings over the months with transportation officials, Brainard feels that Carmel has a more than fair shot of getting a this federal grant.

“We will end this term with a tremendously improved transportation system in Carmel, ” Brainard stated. “I think we’re getting closer to the year where we can look seriously at connecting a tram or street car system in the center part of the city to get people back and forth without having to use their personal vehicle. This will help with our parking demands a lot. We launched a bike-share program in April where we have 7 stations where people can pick up a bicycle. We’re talking to apartment complexes, Clay Terrace and other neighborhoods so that people can use and enjoy this service for a reasonable fee and is another service that makes Carmel

MAYOR BRAINARD: WRAPPING UP ANOTHER TERM AND A SUCCESSFUL 4TH QUARTER

Page 16: Carmel Magazine October 2015

even more exciting and attractive to our residents and guests. We chose the company Zagster, because they are the only company with a business model that allows the private sector to add their stations that are then totally integrated into the city system.”

The mayor announced that a major milestone for the city will be when the Hazel Dell bond is paid in full by the end of 2016. The city took the bond out in 1996 to build Hazel Dell Parkway and other major street projects and repairs. The cash flow will be available to the city and Brainard plans to repeat a proven model and use the cash flow to get projects into place and completed.

As the recession is well in the rear view mirror, Brainard emphasized that corporations continue to look as Carmel as potential headquarters and that announcements about new businesses, relocations and job opportunities are forthcoming.

As the job market continues to grow so do new developments that bring more residents. The development located at 116th and Spring Mill Road, Jackson’s Grant on Williams Creek is one of the limited remaining open fields that are left to develop in Carmel.

Brainard spoke about the development and how the developer and planning members are taking great care to ensure that it becomes another esthetic marvel that Carmel has become renowned for.

As we approve development plans for each of the remaining prospective developments, residential or commercial, it is important that they are designed and completed appropriately for the sake of the existing neighborhoods and developments surrounding them,” Brainard concluded. “Reflecting back, we have had another prosperous year in our city and we are looking forward to all that is to come in 2016.”

A MEMOIR BY ELIZABETH KRAFT TAYLOR

Writer & Photographer / Kara Reibel

Elizabeth Kraft Taylor, known to friends as “Eliz” (Liz), is an indelible mix of grit and elegance. “Three Jews Walked Into A Shopping Center…” is Taylor’s new memoir, recounting amazing life stories that only she could share.

Featured on the back cover of her memoir is a “want ad” she saw in the Chicago Tribune: “Wanted: Creative Director; wild, undisciplined, sometimes rebellious, raw talent seeks leadership.” She says, “I knew it was written for me.”

After working in retail in Chicago, Taylor

was ready for her next challenge. Not surprisingly, she got the job and moved to Indianapolis, starting a career with Melvin Simon & Associates.

“I’d met Melvin, Herb, and Fred 12 years prior to accepting the job at Simon when they visited a grand reopening for Madigan’s, the most successful store in any of their malls, which was the store where I was the Marketing Director in Chicago,” recalls Taylor. “These three Jews walked into the store and became my three wise men.”

Taylor would work for Simon during the golden age of retail during the ’80s and early ’90s. She would be actively involved

with the opening of the Mall of America as well as Circle Centre Mall, the Indiana Roof Ballroom, Embassy Suites Hotel, the Indiana Pacers and many other tremendous marketing events that she staged, raising the bar and attracting retailers such as Nordstrom to Indianapolis.

Taylor has shared so many of her stories over the years, inevitably eliciting the response from her listeners, “Eliz, you should write a book.”

Taylor dedicates the memoir to her three wise men and to Gerald Paul (Paul Harris, where she served on the Board of Directors), Jerry Gershman and to “Jewish men

“THREE JEWS WALKED INTO A SHOPPING CENTER...”

everywhere who give a shiksa a chance.”

Taylor steps further with her prologue, stating the reasons she wrote the book. The first is to honor and remember Melvin Simon because just attending a synagogue to hear his name read aloud once a year was not enough for her. Her second reason was to show the honesty and ethical values that serve as the foundation for the incredible success of the Simon organization.

Lastly, she writes to share her personal story of determination and hopes to make the point that “we are all born with handicaps and blessings, and it’s our job in life to figure out which is which.”

The delightfully creative copy for the want ad that drew Taylor to Indianapolis was written by then senior copywriter, Teri Moore. “Eliz was, of course, the ideal candidate! She brought structure and just enough organization, but never let that flame of creative freedom burn low,” shares Moore. “It was a madhouse most of the time – creativity, originality, lots of hard work, and above all, the license to thrive in a very loving and supportive environment.”

The marketing events were nonstop with the number of malls across the country, and with the special events held at each, there was never a dull moment. Taylor shares one story about an event held at a mall in Idaho where the Lone Ranger was to make a celebrity appearance.

“You never knew what was going on,” shares Taylor with a smile and a laugh. “I sent a girl to pick up the Lone Ranger, and he came to his hotel room door naked wearing only the mask.”

It’s far more than a fun memoir; it’s a living historical account of the rise of the shopping mall and the evolution of retail marketing. It’s funny, insightful and inspiring. Taylor had a tough start with an abusive drug-addicted mother who died prematurely, leaving Taylor with three younger sisters who she worked hard to raise after the death of their mother.

“Eliz’s book is a great read for anyone from Indiana, anyone in retail and anyone who comes from less than ideal beginnings,” shares Inside INdiana Business Host Gerry Dick.

Taylor is still close to many of her employees and co-workers including Business Development Entrepreneur Jim Austin, who says of Taylor, “Eliz led the industry by leading Simon marketing. She has a brilliant marketing mind and provided me with great guidance throughout our work together which allowed me to hone my own marketing skills early in my career,” shares Austin. “It was a very special time to be a part of the Simon marketing department.”

Taylor praises the Simon brothers for empowering her, and she believes that their religion helped shape the company in very positive ways. “Whenever we opened a new mall which was three or four a year in those days, we would always be involved in that local community in a philanthropic way,” shares Taylor. “And Melvin would say ‘do more.’ I grew up Catholic and were always told to give to the church. The Simon brothers, through their belief of ‘our job is to heal the world,’ gave me a new perspective, and that became an integral part of my life and continues today.”

The inner strength and grace that emit from Taylor come from a special place. She found a path enabling her to thrive which is nothing short of a miracle given her upbringing, an important and compelling story by itself.

After experiencing a childhood of abuse, Taylor felt there wasn’t anything she couldn’t handle. Her strength of character and perseverance served her well, weathering tough circumstances and

guiding her to becoming a successful Senior Marketing VP at Simon. Later, Taylor continued her career as President and CEO of the 500 Festival.

“Eliz Kraft Taylor had a significant impact on my career,” shares National Association of Women Business Owners (NAWBO) Executive Director Mi’Chelle Bettner. “When I worked with her at the 500 Festival, her creative vision was inspiring and a model for me moving forward. Eliz was a mentor to me, and I am blessed to have worked with her.”

Today Taylor is dedicated to serving not just the community but friends who may be dealing with their own challenges.

“I am very happy that she got the opportunity to write this book,” shares Eliz’s husband Stephen Taylor of Stephen Taylor Design Residential Interiors. “Expressing her appreciation to Melvin and Herb was a cathartic experience and the

fact that this gave her a chance to come to terms with her childhood. I believe Eliz to be a superb example to people who’ve dealt with adversity.”

“I have been blessed in so many ways and feel that I am called to devote my time to people in need,” shares Taylor. “I realized that there are people out there that are too shy to ask for help. People just need to love each other.”

Whether it’s a phone call or a note of encouragement, Taylor is dedicated to spreading compassion and love.

“I am happy to share my stories,” says Taylor. “It was a great release for me and a cathartic healing experience.”

“My first goal with my memoir is to bring back conversation about Melvin Simon,” states Taylor. “He was so important to shaping this city, and his impact nationwide cannot be overstated. My three wise men

were wonderful, kind people.”If gold is to be purified, it has to pass through fire. That’s what Eliz is – gold.

As our homes age, so do our granite, marble and quartz countertops. While stone countertops may seem impermeable, they do in fact absorb water and chemicals from cleaning products. General use and cleaning will slowly cause them to lose their luster and shine. Stone countertops are durable but can easily be damaged as they are typically installed in highly used areas. The good news, there is an affordable way to bring your existing countertops back to life. The prescription is to call the doctor, “The Rock Doctor” that is.

The Rock Doctor is a new service concept launched by Neil Ferguson and Brandon Wilson, two individuals highly experienced and dedicated in the home improvement field. With over 6,000 stone countertops installed, Brandon realized the need for ongoing maintenance and care. The

company has focused solely on service to ensure customers can revitalize their countertops instead of more expensive replacement options.

Neil and Brandon explained that with hard water typically found in central Indiana, calcification of stone countertops is inevitable and causes unsightly water spots around our fixtures and sinks. They also emphasized the need for continual maintenance, specifically around our cooktops as oils and frequent cleaning cause these and other areas to become discolored or dull. In addition to revitalizing countertops, The Rock Doctor can remove stains, repair chips, cracks, and seams. Have you ever wanted to upgrade your old kitchen faucet, sink or appliance with a new stylish design but afraid you would have to replace your countertops to do so? The

Rock Doctor can affordably adjust your existing countertop to accommodate your improvements.

If your stone countertops are in the need of repair, polishing or adjustment, one phone call is all it takes. Naturally it will vary depending on the size and condition, but The Rock Doctor’s in home treatment for at 40-50 sq. ft. counter takes approximately an hour and a half and the average cost is $300. Don’t take your countertops for granite.

When he was just 13 years old, Rob Delaby sat by his grandmother’s bed as she battled cancer. Without any power to help beyond comfort and prayer, he felt helpless. Years later, he faced another cancer diagnosis of a close friend. Rather than sitting back, Delaby decided to do as much as he could to make a difference.

“When we found out in September 2014 that my good friend was diagnosed with breast cancer, I said that I would be damned to just sit there and watch it happen,” said Delaby.

Delaby decided to raise money for Susan G. Komen and breast cancer research as a Pink Tie Guy, a group of community leaders who raise money for the fight against cancer. As owner of Shane’s Landscaping and an active member of the community, Delaby fit right in. Between June 1 and August 31 of this year, he went to everyone he knew in an attempt to raise the largest total donation.

“Every donation was a personal conversation or a handwritten letter with someone that I know personally, whether through business or personal relationships,” Delaby said. “I explained how I never do this, how I am always the first guy to be giving. Everyone knew me well enough that they took me very seriously and dug deep into their pockets.”

After raising $23,100, Delaby was announced as 2015’s Pink Tie Guy during

the annual Pink Tie Ball Sept. 19.

“[Learning that I raised the most money] was amazing. I was determined to win. If I do something, I do it. If I tell someone I will go the extra mile, I go two extra miles, so I left it all on the table,” said Delaby. “I was thankful that my efforts were profound enough to put me in the position as the 2015 Pink Tie Guy.”

Throughout his entire campaign, Delaby was motivated through the devastation he has seen cancer cause in his own life as well as others. He used this passion to go above and beyond in terms of raising money.

“When I talk about it, it brings tears to my eyes. I can’t quite explain it,” said Delaby. “I think that it has to do with the pain that I have deep inside from the loss that has been caused by cancer. I am driven by the fight inside to avenge the death of those that were taken by cancer.”

Comparing himself to a supply chain to the front lines of the war against cancer, Delaby emphasized the importance of the community coming together to tackle the disease.

“Breast cancer is a powerful disease that knows no boundaries, so we all need to come together to fight,” Delaby said. “It was my calling to generate resources to those on the front lines fighting the fight.”

Delaby’s own business experience helped him during his campaign. After buying Shane’s Landscaping in 2006 and building it to almost twice the previous size in under a decade as well as recently starting a new business, Premiere Trees and Tree Moving,

Delaby has learned how to work with others to reach success.

“I am driven with an effort to try to be there for everyone that needs me and fulfill all of my commitments,” said Delaby. “It is the same for my business and the same for my role as Pink Tie Guy.”

With doctors so close to a cure, Delaby emphasized how much every donation truly matters.

“Just go on the website and donate,” said Delaby. “We are so, so close to finding a cure. When you say every dollar helps, it truly does.”

The HCR ManorCare and Summer Trace Retirement Community has been providing individualized post-hospital skilled nursing care and rehabilitation services at its Carmel location for nearly 30 years. They have also been active members in the local Carmel Chamber of Commerce, now OneZone, for 31 years. They were members before they even opened their doors to their first rehabilitation patients and long-term care residents.

Executive Director Scott Keefer joined HCR ManorCare in 2008 as the Administrator of Summer Trace. In March 2010, he transferred to ManorCare Health Services of West Des Moines, Iowa, where he led the facility in a total restructure of operations. Keefer returned to Indiana and was appointed to his current position in October 2012.

Keefer spoke about what kind of value being a Chamber member, especially for over three decades, brings to his

business and how any company, large or small, could benefit from a Chamber membership in their local city or town.

“I believe that the Chamber of Commerce, now OneZone, has incredible value when a new person or business moves to a town,” Keefer stated. “If they are already familiar with what a Chamber of Commerce is and does, it’s one of the first places that they go and immediately join. It is important to me and to our company to be a part of the local Chamber.

“We strongly believe that it is important not just to our company but also to the community in that people can look for a multitude of resources when needed and especially if they’re not familiar with particular businesses in a specific category. Being a member of OneZone is something that we will always be a part of and will continue to advocate to any future directors and members of our staff beyond myself.”

Keefer talked about the benefit of being an exhibitor at OneZone’s key business expos, the Business Expo and

Food FORUM and Taste of the Chamber Business Expo.

“These events are great opportunities for businesses to network and get to know other business leaders as well as for them to get to know us and what we provide,” Keefer explained. “We are a referral-based business, and we work with people who are in the financial, legal and estate planning industries as they may have clients who will need our services either now or in the future.”

In turn, Keefer said that they refer their clients to the appropriate professionals when they arrive at his facility with their affairs not entirely in order. With the recent merger of the Carmel and Fishers chambers as OneZone, Keefer feels that the combined membership has more than doubled their potential footprint.

“We have even more exposure to businesses, professionals and business leaders within the OneZone network, and that will hopefully lead to growing our business even more,” Keefer concluded. “Being able to network with our fellow members and describe what our business is and how we can help each other out is very valuable.”

The Carmel and Fishers Magazines have partnered with the OneZone to produce a quarterly overview of what is important to our members, our businesses and to our communities. When the Carmel and Fishers Chambers of Commerce merged as the OneZone earlier this year, their respective young professional (YP) organizations underwent their own merger and redevelopment of their groups, formerly Arrows and In Power. As a result, a more robust young professional organization, now known as OneZone Young Professionals, was established.

The organization, run by a committee of young professional chamber members, is dedicated to connecting YPs under 40 through social networking, professional development, volunteerism and educational events.

OneZone Young Professionals offers YPs in the surrounding areas opportunities to network and share work experiences with other YPs, develop leadership skills and explore ways to be involved with the chamber and the business community. YPs are also given the opportunity to attend a variety of events, volunteer, assist with philanthropic efforts and earn recognition within the organization for YP of the Year in which their peers vote for the candidates.

Originally leading the Arrows committee, Katie Smardo, OneZone YP co-chair, spoke about the merger of the two YP groups and what their committee has placed their focus on.

“Since the two chambers merged into OneZone Commerce earlier this year, we have been focused on learning about each other as committee members and

what each of our strengths are,” Smardo said. “We’ve been discussing how we want to assist our members as an organization and how we can best serve the young professionals across the two communities and beyond our borders.

“Our goal is to continue to provide value and first-rate programs to YPs in our area and outside of our immediate communities. Our organization has the opportunity to help make connections and provide mentorship, networking skills and professional development for our members.

“For example, our Lunch and Learns are a great opportunity and tool for us to provide these services. Our newly formed OneZone YP committee has written a strategic plan and is looking at our long-term objectives. We have discussed how we want our events and programs to look going into 2016. One of our primary goals is to continue to attract members, so that they really feel that they are getting value out of their membership.

“We want corporations and entities from Carmel, Fishers, Indianapolis and the surrounding areas to look to us and use us as a selling point when they are vetting young professionals as potential employees and as an organization that their YP employees can engage and connect with. If their employees feel engaged, then they are more likely to stay in their community, and we don’t lose our talented workforce to competing markets.”

As we go into the final quarter of 2015, one of the topics of discussion among educators, political leaders and business leaders is on the status of our state’s education and what kind of role local businesses might play during these discussions.

Leading the discussion is OneZone which recently hosted a luncheon with the Carmel Clay Schools and Hamilton Southeastern Superintendents, speaking to the audience about the state’s school funding formula and the effects that the current formula will have beyond the temporary patchwork of impending referenda.

This month, OneZone will host Purdue University President Mitch Daniels who will speak about changing the blueprint for making higher education affordable and what he is doing to craft the future of funding college education.

One of OneZone’s platinum members, NextGear Capital, has taken the proverbial bull by its horns and is working to build up the Nancy Blondin Scholarship, a fund established in 2000 and named after

the remarkable Mrs. Nancy Blondin who passed away earlier this year. OneZone continues to honor Blondin’s legacy by awarding this educational scholarship to an outstanding high school, college-bound student each year.

In order for students to qualify for the scholarship, they must meet specific criteria when applying but do not have to go to Carmel or Fishers High Schools. Students must also be sons or daughters of chamber members active in both in-school and outside school activities in their community and must submit a written portion to a committee made up of OneZone members.

Patty Turner, Director of Events and Community Relations for NextGear Capital, sits on the scholarship committee and has challenged other members to get involved in the efforts to help fund the scholarship campaign and raise awareness of its impact.

“At NextGear Capital, we understand the importance of building relationships with different organizations in our community, and that volunteering can have a positive impact on an employee’s everyday life,” Turner said. “Joining the Chamber was a

no-brainer for us. We are always looking for ways to get more involved in the community as all of us here feel very strongly about giving back.

“One of the things that OneZone has done for us is they have the OneZone Young Professionals group, and we have a lot of up-and-comers in our company. We have a strong mentoring program at NextGear, and we do a lot of job mentoring. What I particularly like about OneZone is all of these different things that our people can get involved in, and it doesn’t matter if they live in Carmel or Greenwood or any other areas; they can get involved.

“Our management encourages our employees to attend the Lunch and Learns and OneZone events during the day and on company time. We want to produce the next president of OneZone Young Professionals. It benefits our employees, our company and the cities of Carmel and Fishers.”

When Turner first met Mo Merhoff, president of OneZone Commerce and the OneZone team, she was impressed by their knowledge and their philosophy. Turner wanted to get involved with the things that they are involved in and include NextGear’s employees at every opportunity.

“We are involved with community events like CarmelFest and OneZone’s business expos such as Taste of the Chamber,” Turner explained. “Mo had asked us if we were interested in sponsoring the expo, and my thought was that this was an opportunity for us to pay it forward. Due to the nature of our business, our two tables would be better served if given to local not-for-profits to help advocate for their needs.

It is the perfect platform for organizations such as Chaucie’s Place and The Children’s TherAplay Foundation, Inc.”

After a conversation with Merhoff about the Nancy Blondin Scholarship and how it benefits Chamber members’ employees and their families, Turner joined the scholarship committee, committed to an annual donation and proceeded to raise the bar and challenge other local businesses.

“It blew me away that a minimum of $1,000 was being donated,” Turner said. “What we decided to do was donate $1,000 and then challenge businesses to match it. We have spoken and will continue to speak at lunches and other gatherings to promote the scholarship fund campaign. The first year that we made the challenge, we raised $8,000.

“I feel very passionate about this scholarship. We need to advocate more as I don’t think people look at it for the opportunity and investment that it is. It recognizes no borders. What we get back as employers and members has significant value. It is an opportunity to help our respective businesses and our employees to succeed. We are helping their children, our future leaders and next generation of professionals succeed.”

Once again, Turner is calling out to OneZone members to match their efforts and partner with NextGear Capital to build the scholarship fund and take it to the next level.

“We are challenging our members to match us and join us this year with our efforts to grow this scholarship,” Turner emphasized. “We would like to find companies to help us and partner with us, so that we can continue to grow this fund and spread the word.

“I ask our members how can we help people who are as passionate and knowledgeable and want to make something succeed like the OneZone team does? How can we help them make it the best?”

Dennis Glander is our Helping Hands Award Winner for October. Denny lives in Carmel with wife Barbara. Denny retired as Regional Manager of Yamaha in 2005 and is still active in community sharing his love of music. Frequently, you’ll find him playing at venues like Prime 47 and the Columbia Club. He also plays at venues in South Haven, MI where he spends the summer on his boat.

However, Denny was selected for the Helping Hands Award for volunteering to entertain residents at the Riverwalk Village American Senior Community in Noblesville in the Memory Care Unit who suffer from Dementia and Alzheimer’s and recovering from Strokes. These residents enjoy his renditions of WWII songs and tunes from the Great American Songbook.

Thank you Denny for contributing your time, energy and talent to the residents of Riverwalk.
