CENTRAL CHURCH OF CHRIST 1440 SO. OAKDALE MEDFORD, OREGON 97501 January 31, 1985 n: 6^303 1985 has started, and what exciting MESSAGES FROM MARY AND BERT we have! They ask ue to join them in praise as they say "Praise be to God for His great and wonderful gift to us..His Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior! As we leave this holiday season when we celebrate the birth of the Son of God, and as we come into a new year with its hopes and desires to do better, let us always remember the gift that God has given us in His Son. May we do all we can to serve Him and to share His love with others who do not yet know the joy of walking with the Lord." "We want to thank all of you again who make it possible forus to give life and hope to these sweet and wonderful children in Cagayan Valley Children's Home. Thank you also to those who sent special gifts for our Christmas. One church gave money to purchase food for Christmas dinner..and It was delicious. Others sent money to purchase gifts or sent gifts and cards. They are all appreciated very much and show the love of the Lord in you, and that we are teaching these children. Because you show love they are learning to love and give." FAMILY GROWTH: "We have again had a small population explosion. In October five children joined our special family here. They all came from the province of Tfugao, a mountainous area. Samuel, 3 yrs, old, is d:ill not walking, but really fattening up and becoming a nor mal little boy. He is an illegitimate child and was mostly ignored. John was 9 mos. old, and is the younger brother of our Joel, who came to us at the age of 2 mos. Even though the family could not care for their other children we have this new son of theirs(birth con trol among the poor and uneducated is a real problem). John was thin and could not yet sit by himself, but mv is almost op to normal for 1 yr. old. Julio was adopted by a couple who had no children after 12 years of marriage. But after a few months they realized that Julio was not normal..he could not eat normally, seemed to have seizures, and was behind in develop ment. Doctors and hospitals could not help. We took him to Manila and they suspect epilepsy, and we suspect cerebral palsy also. We would appreciate your prayers for this sweet boy, that we may really be able to help him. He gets sick easily, then has such a hard time brea thing, and his body is almost always still at that time. He is 1 1/2 yrs. old, but very small, and can do nothing for himself. Maureen is 12 years old and is mostly blind and seems deaf. We have found out that she has operable cataracts. The first of Feb. I will be taking her to Manila to see if anything can be done for her hearing, and then the surgery for her eyes will be scheduled. Because she cannot see or hear she, of course, is not normal in many ways, but seems to be a bright girl, can take care of herself, is helpful in work around the house and watching the other children. She has a special talent in being able to mold animals and people out of clay. We pray that she will be able to see well and to hear, and I am sure she can be a contributing member of society. Nov. 28 our family was blessed with twins, Fe(Faye) and Freddie, 9 mos. old. They are 3rd degree malnourished, with Fe being the weakest. She cannot yet sit by her self, but is improving daily. Fred is now sitting alone and beginning to try to move on his own. -They are beautiful children, and we praise the Lord that because of your love and help we can again save these children, from death, and hopefully bring them up to love and serve our Lord. Jan 4 Joycelyn joined our family, the daughter of a widowed student. She is from Mountain Province and does not speak Ilocano, but understands it." Pablo, whose mother had died, was 11 months old. He had a harelip, but not a serious one. December 12 Pablo apparently had some kind of Cholera and in about 5 hrs. had gone to be with the Lord. We were very sad to lose this little man who seemed so sweet and smart, but we know he is with the Lord. One of our children has been released to his parents. We are sorry to lose Melbourne, who is 1 1/2, but are happy that his family can be together again. They live in Aparri, so we are able to see him now an<l then and have a chance to share the Lord with the parents." GENERATOR: "We want to express our thanks again to all of you who made our generator possible. It has been a great blessing to us as the electricity has been on and off. Without it we would always be with out water and the poor laundry ladies would really have a hard time washing everything by hand. Also, with the rainy season upon us, it would be so dif- difficult to get diapers and clothes dry. Thank you again so much." &

AyiNOUNCING: "In Nov. we were blessed by the visit of Mr. and Mrs. Bob Prultt» our forwardingagents The reason for their visit was the birth of their 10th grandchild. Jordan Lee PrulttBureros was bom Nov. 30 at 10:25 A.M., weighing 6 lbs, 3 ox. We praise God for His care forus during the time of his birth, and that He was also with the other children at hone while wewere In Manila. We also thank the Lord that the other children (all 63 of them) really haveaccepted and love Jordan. They fall in line to holdhim, talk to him, play with hlra, Bath times we shouldcharge admission. Some children questioned beforewhether we would still love and care about them If wehad our own child. Now they know we really love themand so It has even Improved the attitude and the feeling of acceptance for some of then. Thank you to allof you who held us up before the Lord during the time .Of pregnancy and delivery. We ask your continued pray-jers for us as we raise him In the love of the Lord, and that he will be a great example to the other dhild-Jjren also. We ask your prayers for us and the otherstaff as we raise all of these children in the love

and Word of our Lord."

CHRISTptAS: "During Christmas holidays many of our '•children were able to go to their parents* or relatives homes for vacation. Some of the staff tookchildren to their homes, which Is a blessing to thechild. We were very happy when school was about toresume and our family was again complete. Most ofthe children had a very happy time. Two of our boys, however, gave an unhappy time to their father as theykept begging him to bring them back here. We praisethe Lord that they are so happy here in our love, butdo feel sorry for the father and how he must havefelt when his children did not want to stay home fora few days. We pray that all these children will growto be wonderful Christian parents with homes filledwith the love and joy of Christ."

Joy raises huge papayas!

tHi! I'm Jordan Lee Prultt Bureros,

7 weeks old.

That's my Mommy and my Daddy.

"Because of the birth of Jordan and our being gone so longIn Manila, our Christmas was not our usual Christmas. Butwhat joy we had together as we remembered the birth of ourLord, and God's love for us.How fiankful we were for the help of JOY COLLINS In preparing the clothing for the children for their Christmasprograms, and for taking over while we were In Manila. Thehelp that Joy has been to us will soon be very apparent, asshe has just left us to return to the States, with no plansto come back to live In the Philippines. Joy has been withus since 1979, making and repairing clothes, landscaping, being a grandma, and taking charge when necessary. She hasdone so many other things that they can not all be listedhere. We can never give enough thanks to Joy for all herhelp; we just praise the Lord for sending her to us, andat a time when we did not realize we even needed her. Nowwhat will we do? For those who do not know, Joy Is a widowin her 60*8 who has been here at her own expense. How wepraise the Lord for her, and we know that, as always, theLord will fill the hole left by her departure. He knows ourneeds."

Three busy months and again we have MESSAOES FROM MARY AND PERT. She is savoring a veryspecial time as Mary says: "As I am writing this newsletter T am sitting in the lounge ofthe vTesuit Retreat House in Raguio Citv, looking out at a beautiful view of Cod's creation. Our annual missionary retreat has just finished and we are all refreshed and renewed andready to get back to work for the Lord. How we praise tlie Lord for this beautiful place torelax and enjoy—and how we praise Him for the wonderful fellowship we have had in His Lovethese 3 days. It felt so good to feel the cooler air, smell the pine trees(although somewhat smaller than Oregon pines) and walk the hills. But even more invigorating and refreshing was the fellowship and sharing together. There were 63 people present. Including children, from Aparrl, Enrile, Manila, Cebu and Oavao."

GROWTH; "The last three months have been very busy and interesting. We have grown againby 5 children, Elvie and Avelyn came together,9?at 7 months and 5 months of age, lookinglike twins. Elvie's mother had died and they had mo monev for milk and she.was 2nd degreemalnourished. Avelyn is Illegitimate and needed attention and care. Both weighed 11 lbs.(the same weight as Jordan at 2 months). Two days later Ahner joined our family at 1 dayold and 5 1/2 lbs. He also is illegitimate. He has grown very fast.Anallza came next at 1 yr. old, weighing 11 lbs. She cannot yet sit bv herself or turnover. Her mother had been sick and in the hospital much of the time since her birth. Theonly income was what the father made driving tricy(try-see) (A motorcycle with sidecar—usedas a taxi) for someone else, and was gone from the house all day. The aunt was a studentand was gone from the house most of the time. Thev did not have milk for the baby and shespent most of her time alone at home lying in bed. She is a beautiful girl and now veryhappy and quickly gaining strength. Next came Glory, 17 days old. She is a twin hut themother could not nurse both and had no money for milk (the older sister at 1 yr, is likeAnallza, they said). She is beautiful and quiakly filling out.

Thank you so much to all of you who are partners with us and making it possible by yourprayer and financial support for us to give life both physical and spiritual to these children. Anyone who would like to "adopt" a child write to us here and we will send you pictures and letters. (Send checks to the forwarding agents)."

SPOTS BEFORE OUR EYES! "Toward the end of January one of our older boys and our nurse camedown with Chicken Pox. At the time T left home (going to Manila first and then Ragulo) 3^children had had the Chicken Pox. Case number 35 was supposed to meet me here in Baguio,Bert broke out the day after I left home! We praise the Lord that almost all of those withCr.xckeii Pox navc vioc riau fcvev.' oi." beeri ..nC (Uirti c •. j'stc o p. cur

boys came down with the measles. When I left^ home ve had had 23. cases, but all were on themend. Only one came doxm with pneumonia. How wg thank the Lord that we were able to purchase the medioinras needed for all these children, and we praise Him for preventing thebad side effects that can result."

DEPARTURES: "Two of our children have left us to return to their families. Rosendo, ^ yrs.old, had lived with us since he x«ras 9 mo. old. How hard it was to let him go and howi wemiss him! We are sad to lose him at this age when he cotild still be learning so much aboutour Lord's love for him. But we have taught him and pray that the knovledgo of the T.ord slove for him will remain in his heart and influence his Hfe. Lydia, 12 years old, hasbeen returned to her mother. We are saddened by her leaving because it was caused hy thefact that she had started stealing. We gave her manv chances and tried evervthinc we knew. Please iolc wltii us in concentrated praver for her, tha': will agaJn let the Lord control her. She was a very sweet Christian girl, and we wer<-> so surprised by this-attitude(thcv sale) '.or .f.',--?her was the s.ame way), .But th^ T.ord h->n power Lo bring ber bnck ''romthis va-.- n" life, and we are rea]ly praying for her."

DIAGNOSIS: " "el>ruary T took Julio, James and Maureen to ^'anila. We found out that James &Maureen both seem to be deaf(we took James last year and were praying for improvement). We will be having surgery for Maureen's eyes in thefuture. Pray for the needed funds. Julio does have

almost finished. (She' has'severe cerebral palsy',

PUDDLERS; "In January our dog had 6 puppiesand Bert also broiight home a bcan»-ifu1 ntippy. The children really enjoyed their "babies" andthe "babies" were so patient with them, beingcarried around, wrapped in blankets, put to hed,etc- Now they are gone and we miss them.(B"t I'm sure there will be more!)" James "and Auntv Lotty

VISITORS: "In February Eldon i L IPoCts from Joplin, Missouri, and If3 friends, Tom Mllhem, Jim Brook.., | ' ' tP*'J" '"^1and Hunky Chunky, Che magic clown, r(Russell Blender) visited us and i • 1put on a wonderful party for thekids, which included gifts, softdrinks, and ice cream," ijA

"Last week Charles and Roberta So. |[r-by left for the States for a year jl^of furlough. We will miss them fTwhile they are gone, (they are 'special grandparents for the child- ,ren,) Pray for safety" for them a,-. /they travel and speak," /iftPLANS: "W'e are about ready to bt-jficonstruction on our kindergartenbuilding and will continue on it as v \ \ ^ /'i i

, j I'aul.i hunky Clmnkvthe Lord provides the funds. Thiswill also be used for a chapel building and the second storv will include an infirmaryoffice and staff housing," ' *

"Jordan is now 3 1/2 months old and is a joy to us all. We praise the T.ord for blessinghim with a strong healthy body and mind. Thank you to all who have sent gifts for himand are praying for him,"

Again we use the very inadequate words "Thank You" Co all of vou who share in this ministry with us. We ask your prayers for us, our staff, and our children, and for someone(s)to take over for us so we can take our furlough in 1986, T.ord bless each of you withspecial blessings,"

And so they express their love to you, and they are so thankful chat they are able to bethere working with the precious chiTdren.

A-;?po8t script here: Mary had bad problems with bus connections trying Co get homefrom Baguio, Bert had the Chicken Pox hard, His face and neck were completely covered, besides plenty on the rest of his body, and he even had them inside his throat. a student nurse at Seattle pacific University and is here for 3 months as an intern. Weask your prayers for her as she adjusts to the culture and heat of the Philippines, lifeamong 69 children, and as she seeks to serve the Lord and these children and look for thefuture. Next week we will have Michelle Moore here for a few days. She Is also a student(education) and has just come to visit the Philippines and see what the Lord might havefor her here."

"We have been praying for a book-keeper, social worker, and person(s) to take our placewhen we go on furlough in 1986, and someone to continue the work that Joy Collins wasdoing. It appears that these needs are being met. Please pray with us as we choose andteach these the Lord is sending, " Our hearts fill with praise that again the Lord hasheard our prayers and is supplying our needs."

SCHOOL AGAIN: "It is now time for school to begin again and thus time for uniforms.Praise the Lord that out of 16 girls, only 2 shirts have to be made, and among all 30 inelementary school and kindergarten there were enough white T-shirts to fit everyone. Eventhough the children are growing, there is enough to go around. Thank you to all of youwho have given T-shirts or the money to purchase them. Some of them will not be usablenext year and will have to be replaced, but we are thankful to the Lord that they aresufficient for now. We have one in Seminary, 3 in high school, H boys and 9 girls inelementary, and an evenly divided 10 in kindergarten. Please pray for our children asthey begin another school year, that they will stand strong in the love and faith andWord of our Lord as they mix with the people and temptations of the world (such as beingencouraged to cheat). Our children are normal and feel the pull of Satan and his workers. We ask your prayers for them to follow the ways of the Lord and be shining lights for Himin all they say and do, and ask prayers for Bert and me and the rest of the staff as welead and teach these children in the Lord."

and VHS for the Home. With that and Modesto the gardener, and children with Papayasome other monies designated for harvest from trees Joy Collins planted.Christmas gifts, and a little extra,we purchased a TV and VHS player. We can see this as a blessing as we can provide wholesome entertainment and learningopportunities for the children (so much better than the movies the older children want toview for relaxation and entertainment). If anyone has a VHS and could record spiritual, educational, or other programs (sports, documentaries, etc.), we would be very thankful.Already the children's horizons have been expanded as they leam more about the worldthan they can know living in the province. A special "thank you" to those who made itpossible."We thank the Lord that Jordan continues to grow and be healthy. He is always amazing us,as most of our children are way behind in development because of mal-nourishment, andalso he is advanced in many ways. 'Thank you' to you who are praying for him also.""We pray the Lord's blessings on you as you pray and give to make this work possible. Mayall we say and do bring praise to the Lord. Thank you all again so much for making itpossible for us to help these children and teach them of the Lord's love for them."

Mary and Bert love to hear from you. Their address is on the first page.

Gilbert has a hare lip and cleft palate, but will be a very handsomeboy when the surgery is done. The mother was just going to throw him out, but then was informed of the Home so sent him here. Praise the Lord that we were here to save that littlelife."

"Four-year old Hike is another Cerebral Palsy case, but one that will be able to walk. Hehas improved a lot already in the few weeks he has been here. It appears that he may hevery hard of hearing so we will have to have him tested—and pray that he will he able tohear. Mike's mother died about a year ago and he has needed attention.""On Sept. 24 Jocelyn (8 lbs.) and Jonalyn (6 lbs.), three-month twin girls arrived, small buthealthy. This was a problem of poverty and the mother could not nurse them enough. We arethankful to get them now while they are still healthy instead of in a few weeks or monthswhen they would be severe malnourishment cases. They are pretty little girls (and we neededthem because all our little girls are 1 year old or older)."On the 26th of Sept. Ian arrived, a happy, healthy 5-month old. His mother just hadcataract surgery (34 years old) and the father (79 years old) could not care for him orsupport all the children." _ _ _

SPECIAL HELPERS It was an exciting time at the end of August when Mary went to Manila forthe departure of Michele Rudisill, intern for the summer, and to meet Ernest and Veda Hondrick from Keno, OR, whohad come to replace Mary and Bert when they go on furloughnext May. Mary asks "Please keep them in your prayers as

also as we teach them. The children have missed their ^Lola Joy (Joy Collins) and are happy to have another Lola

"While Michele was here she helped a lot in teaching some ^of our handicapped and learning-disabled children. They vgreatly improved with her time and attention. James, our 'lElffbetter in school; and Maureen, deaf and with cataracts, it .. '•

"We have had another Timothy Team from Faith Academy inManila (children of missionaries in Thailand andIndonesia) come to work and help us. They bought paint Family andand painted our water tower-shop building, so we look ver>' intern Michele Pudisillbeautiful. All we need is a fresh coat on the Home building."

MAUREEN CAN SEE!!! Last Sept. 16 Maureen, age 12, deaf and almost totally blind, had herfirst cataract surgery and is now fitted with glasses. How thrilling to read "^That a joy itwas to watch Maureen when she put her glasses on for the first time. She just smiled andsmiled and went around looking at everything. She waved her hands, quite a distance fromher face and lower, and saw them. She looked at the chickens, the locks, her shadow(waving her arms back and forth) and today she watched TV, smiling all the time. She lovesthe babies, and now she can see them to hold them and watch them. She still cannot seenormally, but better than before. She has another surgery scheduled in January. The costof the surgery was $620,00 (including fare and lodging in Manila). We praise the Lord thatthe Redwood Church in Grants Pass, through Michele, paid $200.00 We know the Lord throughHis people will provide the balance. How we thank the Lord for giving man the knowledge andability to perform such surgeries and for guiding the Dr. He said this was one of his mostsuccessful cataract surgeries on a child.

SUGGESTION; Since ic is apparent that Mary and Bert have several children who will have bigmedical needs in order to function successfully, perhaps some would be interested in starting a special medical fund for these exceptional needs (deaf, blind. Cerebral Palsy, harelip, cleft palate), A part of the expense involved here is travel to Manila to specialistsand surgeons and lodging while there, "Everyday" needs are met in the regular budget and inthe Home area. It is very difficult to meet tlie extraordinary expenses out of the monthlybudget—in fact, with so many more children, impossible,

PRAISES AND OPPORTUNITIES; "How we praise the Lord for supplying our needs! With this greatincrease in number our expenses have also greatly increased (it is amazing how fast 20babies can go through a can of formula). There have been times we wondered what we wouldeat the next day, but the Lord has always provided, as He has promised in His Word, Wewere blessed by 6 big boxes of sandwich cookies, providing snacks for several weeks (whichwe had no budget for.) We don't even know the person who sent them, A business ladv inAparri (non-Christian) gave a sack of rice (enough for 5 days), two chickens, and some pork.We received monies from some of the students at Faith Academy in Manila (a result of theTimothy Team) and in many other ways the Lord has provided. We praise Him for each of youand your part also in helping us give a home and love and the love of Christ to thesechildren."

"There are several things that we need that maybe some of you can help us with. We alwaysneed plastic pants and bibs. We could also use ciiildren's glass frames, since many of ourchildren need glasses. We could use more magazine pictures of animals, houses, families(and extended families), flowers, the different food groups as well as any foods, doi-tors,etc., waterfalls, volcanoes, different sports and exercise activiti.^s, VV cMr.^in!v-appreciate the pictures sor.t -before, but the supply is geCLing chiu."- —

"Because of the increase in the number of children we need to ^purchase more blankets (about $2.20 each) and dinnerware. We iwould also like to ask that you continue to pray for the '1needed funds to purchase and Install a submersible pump. IThe children and staff at Winema Junior Camp gave us a great •start on this, but we still need around $1,000 for that m'Hy •project. Our original pump just cannot keep up with the H'imrkpresent demand. If anyone would like to support or 11|114fjssponsor a child, we have plenty available. Full cost is N>.$50.00 per month, but any amount is appreciated."

We have such exciting MESSAGES FROM MARY AND BERT to share with you! Mary says "As I lookback on the last three nionths all I can do is praise the Lord and thank Him for supplyingour every need, and praise Him for you wonderful partners that trust Him and allow Hiin touse you to help us. Without your prayers and financial help (and all the boxes of clothes, plastic pants, bibs, etc.) we would never make it. We praise Him for giving us the healthand strength and the good staff we have, also."

THE FAMILY GROWS! They say "We always seem to grow in leaps and bounds. At last count wehad 82 children, plus Jordan. Three of those children are Negrito children we are helpingto go to school. They are from one family and live in their own little house but eat withus and we pay their schooling. This is an experiment in how we can help these specialpeople. If anyone would like to make a special gift to help cover their costs, we wouldpraise the Lord."

"Three more of the children are from Cebu and are here with their mother, who works here. She was in desperate need and we were the ones who could help.
