Cheri Leavypublisher 2012 is off to a tremendous start

I am a summer girl at heart but I do love the start ofa new year. The whole idea of new beginnings andpledges for improvement make this season a challengeand full of opportunities. Covering the University ofGeorgia and its athletics fires you up too.

I know you will find JD’s column on page 4 as in-spiring as I do. Coach Magill has held the record at UGAof 76 straight wins in Athens with his tennis team from1968-1972 and this past week Coach Bauerle broke thatrecord taking his women swimmers to their 77th con-secutive home win from 1995 to now. Dantzler is soclose to both coaches so I know how much he caresabout their successes as a friend even more so than aBulldog fan or sportscaster so his column is special.

The column made me think about the dedicationand talent of our coaches and student-athletes. My hus-band Vance and I had lunch with Mark Slonaker, Exec-utive Director of the UGA Bulldog Club, last week andwe all marveled at how outstanding our athletics pro-gram is and how lucky we all are to be involved. Beinga Bulldog inspires us to excel.

Just look at Shelby McLeod who is the reigning MissUGA! We spotlight her accomplishments and goals onpage 11. We will all be rooting for her to win Miss Geor-

gia as she represents us well. Also representing us well are the folks that were just

honored in the Bulldog 100. Vance and I got to meet aton of the honorees this past weekend at the awards ban-quet in Atlanta and they were so impressive. The Bulldog100 is a program that determines and awards the 100fastest growing businesses that are owned or operatedby UGA Alumni, each year. We will share those photosand a list of the winners in our statewide Football Sign-ing Day issue on February 28th. It was a wide and var-ied group of the best and brightest businesses owned byBulldogs.

The UGA Alumni Association hosts Women of UGAevents and the first segment in their new series: NewYear, New You is set for January 31st at the City Club inAtlanta. Over the next several months they will highlightdifferent topics to help us keep our New Year’s resolu-tions. Their first session will focus on Women andWealth. Renee Lewitinn ’89 and Katie Waters ’07 willguide us through things to know about hiring a financialadvisor and tips everyone can use, followed by a Q&Asegment. It fits right in with our goals to be the best wecan be.

Again, it isn’t just alumni that are striving to do great

things. Students involved in the philanthropy UGAHEROs work closely with the UGA football team, Ath-letic Association, and both Head Football Coach MarkRicht and Georgia Legend Vince Dooley (who are bothH.E.R.O. Board members) to help rally students andraise more money for children with HIV/AIDS in Geor-gia. This past Saturday they presented such a creativefundraiser that shows their fight for a good cause, liter-ally. They held the Bulldawg Brawl, a charity boxingevent with 60 student boxers that competed in 30 fightsmaking up an all-day event at Georgia Theatre. We havephotos from the event on page 7.

Check out photos on the adjacent page from the re-cent art opening DRAWN: FROM ATHENS Exhibit, thefirst exhibit under the direction of the Gallery@Hotel In-digo-Athens' new curator, Didi Dunphy. It features theworks of 11 North Georgia-Based artists: James Barsness,Jamie Bull, Lauren Gallaspy, Susan Hable, Clay McLau-rin, Michael Oliveri, Jeff T. Owens, Leslie Snipes, ArtRosenbaum, Jessica Wohl, and Kathryn Refi. Get out tosee the talent at that exhibit and some good musical tal-ent too spotlighted on page 10.

I want to wish all of you a Happy New Year! I hopeit is filled with success, joy, art and love!

When it comes to breaking records, there are two gold stan-dards that almost always hold true for judging its true greatness:who had it before and how long did it stand? If one category is eye-opening, that’s an extremely impressive accomplishment. If bothare jaw-dropping, now that’s a record!

Like so many things in life, it’s the company one keeps. Roger Maris broke Babe Ruth’s record for single season home

runs with 61 in 1961, a mark which had stood for 34 years. HenryAaron broke the Bambino’s mark for career round trippers in 1974.The Sultan of Swat retired in 1935.

Cal Ripken broke the unbreakable record of consecutivegames played, set by Lou Gehrig, which stood for over 60 years.

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar holds the NBA record for career scor-ing. He overtook Wilt Chamberlain.

John Unitas had the quarterback record for most fourth-quar-ter comebacks for three decades. It was passed by Dan Marinoand John Elway.

The two golfers to win two British Opens at St. Andrews overthe last 80 years? Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods.

Albert Pujols had a three home run game in this past season'sWorld Series, becoming just the third player to accomplish thatfeat, joining the Babe in 1926 and Reggie Jackson in 1977.

Roger Federer captured Wimbledon and the U.S. Open bothfor four straight years. No one else has ever done that. The lastmen’s tennis player to win the grand slam was Rod Laver (note, three of the tournaments were played on grass surfaces). That wasin 1969.

At Georgia, freshman Herschel Walker set the single-gameschool rushing record with 283 yards against Vanderbilt in 1980.The previous mark was held by Charley Trippi, who ran for 245yards against Florida in 1945. The greatest college football player

ever broke the record of the greatest college football player of his era,and it took 35 years.

And the most iconic and fabled record of them all – Joltin’ JoeDiMaggio hit safely in 56 straight games in 1941. The closest any-one has come since was Pete Rose’s 44-game streak in 1978.

When it comes to coaching, the same benchmarks hold true. Here are the NFL coaches who have led their teams to Super

Bowl championships in back-to-back seasons: Vince Lombardi,Chuck Noll, Jimmy Johnson, Mike Shanahan and Bill Belicheck.

Paul “Bear” Bryant has more than doubled the number ofSoutheastern Conference football championships as his closest“challenger.”

The college basketball coaches who have won at least fournational championships are John Wooden (10), Adolph Rupp(four) and Mike Kryzsewski (four).

Phil Jackson’s 11 NBA titles – the most recent coming in 2010,the record-breaker the year prior - won as a head coach is the mostever, besting Red Auerbauch’s total of nine, his last of which waswon in 1966.

Well a record has fallen at Georgia that drips with greatness inso many ways.

First of all, it had stood for 40 years – see the Hammer and theBabe.

It seemed unbreakable – see Riken and Gehrig. And it involves two icons – see so many of the above. There is also quite the uncommon twist that this one involves

two sports. It is a sort of Georgia Bulldogs in-house version of, say coach

K topping a mark set by the Bear. With the Bear possessing thewitty pen, presence and yarn-spinning of Mark Twain and DanJenkins accompanied by the promotional savvy of P.T. Barnum.

And with coach K’s youngest son named Bear. And coach K beinga surfing addict and tennis junkie.

Amongst the immeasurable accomplishments and contribu-tions from The Greatest Bulldog Ever, Dan Magill coached Geor-gia’s powerhouse men’s tennis team to an astronomical 76consecutive home victories from 1968 through 1972.

For decades, those 76 straight wins in Athens stood as the all-sports benchmark at Georgia.

But a record that would seemingly never be surpassed wason January 20, 2012.

One of the Living Legend’s great protégés, Jack Bauerle guidedhis powerhouse women’s swimming team to a 77th consecutivehome victory – an incredible streak that began in 1995!

Bauerle has led Georgia to four national championships andseven Southeastern Conference crowns, while accumulating anamazing collegiate and international resume that became trulycomplete with his illustrious position as head coach of the UnitedStates Olympics Women’s Swimming Team for the 2008 BeijingGames.

Coach of the Georgia women since 1979 and the men since1983, Bauerle coached Georgia teams have never lost to Tech.

Like Magill, one of his hero’s and his youngest son’s (a futureslugger for David Perno’s powerhouse baseball program) name-sake, where Bauerle has truly cast his greatest shadow is the in-credible impact that he has had on so many.

Both of these greats have coached some very special people. Amongst Bauerle’s most proud achievements is having

coached three NCAA Woman of the Year Award winners – the lateLisa Coole (1997), Kristy Kowal (2000) and Kim Black (2001).No collegiate program can equal that honor.

It’s the company one keeps.

Super Bowl Party Prep

Super Bowl Sunday is right around the corner and it’s time to start prepar-ing your evening’s party platters and drinks because let’s face it, this night is much more than just a football game. Whether you want to channel your inner chef or just know where to get the best grub, I’ve compiled two sig-

before you tackle the main dishes make sure to have lots of nuts, chex mix and general drinks ready for when your guests arrive.

Start off the evening with a crowd-pleaser: Hilltop Grille’s Artichoke Crab Dip. Restaurant owner, Chris Lloyd, and Chef Bert Lumpkin guarantee this dish will bring even the strongest rivals together, even if just for the pre-game show.

The National’s Peter Dale and bartender, Zack Kennedy, came up with a perfect cocktail for each team.

For the main event bring out the John Wayne Burger, courtesy of Harry’s Pig Shop. It’s their version of a BBQ Burger all dressed up for a night on the town! They slather it with a tangy BBQ Glaze, and then treat it to a healthy dose of melted white cheddar and pepper jack cheeses, Harry’s spice rubbed bacon, jalapenos and their house pickled red onions.

Saute onion in butter until soft, add artichoke hearts and cream cheese stirring until cream cheese is melted. Add heavy cream and cheese stirring until cheese is melted. Season to taste with salt, pepper and tabasco. Stir in crab meat and serve with tortilla chips or sourdough bread.

To prepare your own John Wayne Burger, Harry’s suggest using 100% Ground Angus with minced onions and spices. Cook your burger to your liking, douse it with BBQ sauce and cover with cheeses. When your cheese has melted, build your burgers and with toppings like these a little goes a long way!

Men’s Basketball

With several SEC games under their belt, the Hoop Dawg’s efforts have improved drasti-cally over the course of the past two weeks. The highlight was a tough, grind it out typeof win in overtime against Tennessee. Looking down the road for Coach Fox and theDawgs, their schedule is slightly less gruesome than the start of their SEC schedule. However, this next segment of their schedule starts out with what will likely prove to betheir toughest game of the year. Kentucky. As many of you know, Kentucky has becomea perennial powerhouse in recent years with the arrival of John Calipari. The Dawgs willbe hard pressed to get a win over the SEC’s best team. The game will be at The Steg at 7p.m., January 24. The Dawgs then have a week off following the bout with Kentucky be-fore they have to travel to Auburn to take on the Tigers Feb. 1. The Dawgs then travel toKnoxville on Feb. 4 for a rematch with the Volunteers before hosting Arkansas on Feb.8.

Women’s Basketball

The Lady Dawgs continue their winning ways and have maintained a top-20 nationalranking throughout this season. Unfortunately, they did run into a bit of a buzzsaw re-cently with Kentucky. The Lady Dawgs lost a very close 69-64 contest to the Wildcats atStegeman Coliseum. That dropped the Lady Dawgs to a 4-2 record in the SEC andmoved Kentucky to 6-0. Still, Coach Landers and company rebounded with a victoryover Ole Miss this past Sunday. The rest of the SEC schedule looks something like this:On the 26th, they travel to Nashville for a game with Vanderbilt. Then the Lady Dawgshave a week off to recharge their batteries before hosting the Ole Miss at 7 p.m., Feb. 2.

Men and Women’s Tennis

The tennis teams are now in the full swing with the dual portion of their schedule andSEC play beginning very soon. Both teams go into the 2012 seasons with high aspira-tions. The men are currently ranked 4th overall in the country. Hernus Pieters leads theteam this year and is currently the 3rd ranked player in the country. The 8th rankeddoubles team of Wil Spencer and Garrett Brasseaux also highlight a team with an in-credible amount of talent. In his 24th season as head coach, Manny Diaz is used to hav-ing this much talent and Bulldawg Illustrated has no doubt that he can harness it into aspecial year. For the women, much is the same as last year for the team. With the returnof Chelsey Gullickson and Nadja Gilchrist, the Dawgs return the best doubles team inthe country and two pretty good singles players as well with Gullickson holding thenumber two national ranking in that category. On the weekend of the Jan 28-29, theITA kickoff will be held at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex with both UGA teams partici-pating. It’s a great event. If you haven’t checked out a UGA tennis match before, we urgeto go grab a seat in the bleachers and watch these world class players bang it out on thecourt.

Gymnastics

The Gym Dogs got back on the winning track, after losing a squeaker at Alabama, with aclose victory over Auburn by a final score of 195.975-195.600. The Dawgs probablyshould have dispatched the 20th ranked Tigers a bit easier and head coach Jay Clarkagrees by saying that the team came out, “flat-footed.” The Gym Dogs will need to rec-tify that soon as they host LSU at 4 p.m., Jan. 28. Be sure to get your tickets early as al-most all Gym Dog meets sell-out early. The ladies then travel to Utah on Feb. 3 beforeheading home for another meet against Arkansas at 7:30 p.m on Feb. 10.

Baseball

A quick note on the baseball team. The team will be hosting the First Pitch Gala whichkicks off the 2012 season. It will be held Friday, Jan. 27 at the Classic Center, beginningwith a silent auction at 6 p.m.. Former Georgia Bulldog and current MLB playerMitchell Boggs will be in attendance. To reserve tickets call Shirley Toney at (706) 5427971.

Spotlight on Shelby McLeodShelby McLeod, a Madison native has enjoyed performing for her entire life. She has participated in many different areas and has many exciting things planned in the near future. Hopefully this piece will encourage you to go and support Shel-by in all the wonderful things she is doing on the University of Georgia campus and in local Athens.

What was your favorite performance?I have several of these, but one that really sticks out for me since at-tending the University of Georgia, would have to be when I sang for my talent in the philanthropic pageant, Miss Sorority Row. My sorority

pageant, and quite frankly. I was in unknown territory. One thing that I love to do no matter what is perform, so I decided to give it all I had and sing like it was any other show. After winning Miss Sorority Row, I realized that there were a number of different things I could do at UGA, and I decided I would take advantage of every opportunity that I could.

How long have you been singing? My dad has been in a band for over 30 years, so I’ve always been surrounded by music, and that’s a passion that we share. When I was younger, I would hop on stage to do a song or two, and I always loved it. I was heavily involved in musical theatre beginning in primary school and continuing throughout high school. I began doing solo performances in middle school, and really began to realize that music is what I wanted to do in high school.

What were your feelings after you won Miss UGA?Absolutely relieved!!! There is a reason I com-peted in Miss UGA twice before I won the title. The incredible amount of support, respect, and encouragement I’ve received since being crowned Miss UGA has been unbelievable and

anywhere else. This university and this city has so much to offer, and I feel so humbled and blessed to have the chance to represent 30,000 plus students in June. With such a large and close-knit Athens community behind me, I feel

giving 110% is the only option.

What are you doing to prepare for Miss GA?Most simply put, getting ready for Miss GA is all about strengthening myself from the inside out. I’m constantly trying to look for ways to stay involved in Athens, give back to different organizations, and striving to connect my platform, Relay for Life, with my day-to-day life. By giving myself small challenges each day, they eventually add up to making a big difference.

Just a little bit of background info:I’m from Madison and I attended Morgan County High School. In high school, I was very active in the arts. From musical theatre, to International Baccalaureate art classes, high school chorus, church choir, Clovers and Company, and singing solo gigs as well. I’ve continued to sing as often as possible in college, and I’m continuing to work on writing original material. At the University of Georgia, I am an active member of Zeta Tau Alpha and Relay for Life, and I’ve helped out with different organizations such as UGA Hero’s and UGA Miracle--(from modeling in a fashion show, to judging one!)
