Vance Leavypublisher Perfectly polished just in time for Easter

Boy hasn’t the weather been glorious in Athensover the last month? Other than a severe need forrain, the temperatures have been in the 70s and80s, which has meant plenty of great days out inthe sun. I’m not sure what this will mean for theupcoming summer season, but for now I’m contentin soaking up the remaining days of spring. And asyou know, there is plenty to do in the Athens areain the near future.

Right now, while I’m stuck on my laptop, pa-trons are beginning their weeklong journey to Au-gusta for The Masters. There’s nothing in ourcountry that signifies spring more than golf ’s firstmajor. Yes, the golf that will be played will be stel-lar, but by now everyone knows it’s the scenery atAugusta National that makes the event so glorious. And how neat that this year’s event culminates onEaster Sunday.

To me as a child growing up on St. Simons,Easter always provided a rare opportunity for mymother to get her three children in their Sundaybest for church and then an annual photo. Blessmom’s heart as I assure you, my siblings and I cer-tainly didn’t make it the all-American Kodak mo-

ment she sought. Nonetheless, we always perse-vered with a photo that at least looked like we weresomewhat into it.

On this issue’s cover, Cheri and I decided torun photos from the recent Perfectly Polished(page 11) event held in Athens. The etiquetteschool helps young people to develop self-confi-dence, courtesy and respect for others through acurriculum of social and dance education. Now alook at the website, shows photos of nothing butsmiling faces, but boy don’t you know some severewrangling went on to get the children to theseclasses and events. For sure, this paralleled whatmy siblings and I did at Easter to dear old mom.So to all the brave moms and dads out there, whohave perfectly polished (or at least on the verge of)children we salute you this Easter season.

Beyond the photos of these sharp future lead-ers, this issue of BI Athens has plenty of shots offolks supporting local causes. Don’t miss every-thing from the Hope Haven Fashion Show (page 5),Starry Starry Night (page 9) and the Sigma DeltaTau (page 7) events. There’s nothing better thanseeing groups of people giving back to their com-

munity. And this certainly rings even truer aroundEaster.

Beyond our photo pages in this issue, our con-tributors have provided great articles on three ofAthenian’s biggest passions … food, music andsports.

Student intern Ashley Hanna got a covetedreservation to the most recent Four Coursemendinner and her report from it will certainly haveyour taste buds on high alert. And our music ex-traordinaire Daniel Peiken had a blast at the recentBreastFest event. You can see his photos from it andhis suggestions for April on page 10. And Jeff Dant-zler (page 4) and Travis Ragsdale (page 6) onceagain give our readers updates on UGA athletics.

There you have it. Please enjoy this issue. Andit is our sincere hope that it will motivate you toget out and enjoy the many offerings of this in-credible city. And since it’s Easter, there’s not a bet-ter time to splurge and buy gifts or go out fordinner at a locally owned business. And naturally, you should be in your Sunday best and be nothingbut perfectly polished.

Happy Easter to all.

Springtime is in full bloom in America’s great-est college town, it’s Masters week and a majority ofthe University of Georgia’s athletic teams are in themidst of competition.

Great weather and the outdoors, sparks passionfor baseball, golf and tennis.

David Perno, Manny Diaz and Chris Haack onceagain have outstanding squads, and after a com-bined five decades as head coaches of Georgia’sbaseball, men’s tennis and men’s golf programs, allhave coached numerous great athletes. Many arenow shining brightly on the national and worldstage and continuing to deliver a great deal of prideto their alma mater.

On the diamond, there are three current big lea-guers who played at Georgia.

Jeff Keppinger delivered the singular greatestsingle game performance in Bulldog history with his5-for-5, three home run showing in Georgia’s 20018-7 victory over Coastal Carolina – capped with hislegendary two-out, two-run round tripper in the topof the ninth (Georgia was the designated visitor),baseball’s Belue-to-Scott. He is one of the five great-est players in program history and has enjoyed astellar big league career. Keppinger should have anexcellent opportunity to make it to the postseasonthis year, as he has joined the Tampa Bay Rays.

Gordon Beckham had the greatest season inBulldog baseball history in 2008, leading Georgia tothe finals of the College World Series while leadingthe nation in homers and becoming the first playerin school history to hit over .400 in three decades.

Beckham hit .411 with 28 round trippers and 77RBI’s, while being named SEC Player of the Year andScholar Athlete of the Year. After a quick stint inthe minors, Beckham was called up to the SouthSide and named the 2009 Rookie of the Year for theChicago White Sox. Beckham had a record settingdefensive season for the Pale Hose in 2011, and willagain man second base for the White Sox.

Mitchell Boggs was a standout reliever for theBulldogs in the mid-2000s, and has gone on to astandout career in the majors. A big part of theWorld Series champion St. Louis Cardinals bullpen,Boggs had four saves last year and made seven post-season appearances.

Big John Isner is perhaps the most famous ac-tive major star athlete/alum of any sport and anyschool. After his epic Marathon Match win at Wim-bledon in 2010, he famously sported a red GeorgiaT-shirt with the growling, snarling, collar wearingBulldog for all of the world to see. Isner has beatenboth Roger Federer and Novak Djokavic this yearand vaulted into the world’s top ten. At every Isnermatch, no matter where, there are Bulldogs barking.

The PGA Tour is littered with former Georgiastandouts, including Bubba Watson, Harris English,Ryuji Imada, Russell Henley, Brendon Todd, ChrisKirk, Brian Harmon and Kevin Kisner.

Watson, the ultra-long lefty with an overflow-ing personality is one of the world’s best players, amulti-time winner on tour and playoff participantat the 2010 PGA Championship.

Henley, while still in school, and English, just

after graduation, made history last year winning Na-tionwide Tour Events as amateurs. Both haveplayed exceptionally well on tour. Henley has beenlow-amateur at the U.S. Open. English played inthe final group with Rory McIlroy at this year’sHonda Classic in Palm Beach. At the same event, atthe famed “Bear Trap,” Harmon set the courserecord with a Friday 61.

Kirk won on tour last year and played in thisyear’s Tournament of Champions.

Todd’s pro highlight came at Jennings Mill inthe Athens Nationwide Tour Event back in 2009when he aced the same Par Three in back to backrounds.

Perno has guided Georgia to three CollegeWorld Series, two Southeastern Conference cham-pionships and six of the school’s 11 all time NCAATournament appearances.

Diaz has led Georgia to four national champi-onships and 11 appearances in the NCAA Finals andthe most SEC crowns of any school during histenure.

Haack has coached Georgia to a pair of nationaltitles and two national runner-up finishes and themost SEC crowns of any school during his tenure.

All have had incredible success, and it obviouslytakes outstanding players to achieve greatness andchampionships.

As Georgia continues to thrive in these three –as well as so more other sports – it’s a lot of fun tosee so many former Bulldog standouts enjoy somuch success on their various professional stages.

Gymnastics

The Gym Dogs fell short at the SEC Championships in Gwinnett coming up with a 3rd place finish. Their total score of 196.575fell shy of the scores posted by Florida and Alabama (197.150 and 196.775 respectively). The Dawgs high score came from an un-usual exercise for them; bars. They scored 49.200 on the bars, their highest this season. The NCAA Regionals begin April 7 at 7p.m. in Auburn.

Baseball

Georgia fell to 18-11 overall and 4-5 in the SEC after losing 2 out of 3 games in a series with the Kentucky Wildcats most recently. With the two stinging losses, the Dawgs are likely to fall out of the top-25 Baseball America polls. The series got off to a fine startwith a win in the first part of a Saturday double header but the Cats offense proved too much as they pushed across 9 and 11 runsin the final two games. Perno’s team will have to bounce back quickly when they travel to Fayetteville to take on one of the bestteams in the country in Arkansas. That series starts April 6 and runs through April 8. The team will be on the road again after thatwith a re-match against Clemson. This time, in Clemson. The Tigers laid the lumber to the Dawgs in Athens last week, beatingthem by a score of 10-5. Foley Field will finally see some more action following the Clemson game on the weekend of April 12, 13and 14. Ole Miss will be town that weekend for another tough SEC series. Coach Perno is hoping that his guys can step up to thechallenge and rebound in the middle of this blistering SEC schedule.

Equestrian

The No. 1 Georgia equestrian team was in a tie in the final round of the Southern Equestrian Championships to South Carolina. However, with a raw score of 4201-3083, the Bulldogs fell. Carly Anthony once again rode well as she won MVP honors in her re-spective event along with Kylee Arbuckle, Megan Hawkins and McKenzie Lantz. Now, the team focuses their attention on the Na-tional Championship once again. As a No. 3 seed in the hunt seat and western disciplines, the Dawgs have received a first roundbye in each of those events. The championships start April 12 in Waco, TX.

Tennis

The third ranked men’s tennis team wrapped up the home portion of their regular season schedule with a shutout over Vanderbilt. That moved Georgia to 16-2 (6-1). The lone SEC loss came against Kentucky in what was as close and exciting of a college tennismatch as you’ll ever see. Look again for that re-match in the SEC tournament or the NCAAs; it will prove to be a good one. Nowthat the home schedule is wrapped up, the team will have to travel Alabama, Auburn and Tennessee to finish out the rest of theseason and SEC play. From there, the SEC tournament kicks off the 19th from Starkville, MS. After that, it’s on to the NCAAswhich will be in Athens this year. It’s always an exciting event and could be even more exciting if Georgia continues their winningways and makes a deep run in the tournament. Behind the solid play of Wil Spencer, KU Singh and freshman phenom NathanPasha, the Dawgs have every opportunity to get Athens excited about championship tennis once again. Anchored by NadjaGilchrist and Chelsey Gullickson, the women’s team is having a heck of a season of their own. They had better luck than the menagainst Kentucky recently shutting out the Wildcats 7-0. They will finish out the rest of the season with Alabama of the 6th,Auburn on the 8th and Tennessee on the 14th. All of those matches will be at home. The SEC tournament will then begin onApril 19 in Oxford, MS.

Softball

A four game series with Florida saw a split from the two best teams in the SEC. The Dawgs won the first two games but lost thefinal two of the weekend against the Gators to bring their overall record to 29-7 on the season. Still, the No. 9 ranked Georgia teamhas much softball left to be played in the season. They will have a break from SEC play when they face USC Upstate on the 10th at6:30. The next day though, they will have to jump head first back into SEC action as they have a double-header with South Car-olina. Then they’re back on the road two days later for a three game series with Kentucky in Lexington. Senior hurler Erin Arevalohas put the team on her back to this point in the season going 14-3 with a 1.25 ERA. More incredible is the fact that she has ac-counted for over half of the innings pitched for the Dawgs. At the plate Kristyn Sandberg has been the model of consistency start-ing all thirty six games. She’s plugging away at a .366 clip with ten homeruns and thirty three RBIs. She leads the team in both ofthose categories.

Golf

The men’s golf team recently had their best finish of the season at the Linger Longer Invitiational in Eatonton, GA. The No. 25-ranked Bulldogs finished second in the field behind only the No. 7 ranked Alabama Crimson Tide. Freshman Nick Reach also hadhis best individual performance of the year at the tournament. Reach went birdie-birdie on his final two holes to force a playoffwith Alabama’s Cory Whitsett for the individual title. Both Reach and Whitsett birdied the first three holes of the playoff but Whit-sett came out on top after an eagle on 18. The team now has several weeks off before traveling down to St. Simons Island for theSEC tournament on April 20. The Women’s golf team recently had a second place finish of their own at the Liz Murphy Classichere in Athens. They finished second behind, guess who ... Alabama as well. All-American, Marta Silva Zamora finished third aftercarding a score of 5-under for the tournament. Much like the men, the women have some time off before traveling to Fayetteville,AK for the SEC tournament.

As we walked up the gravel path to a little green house tucked in the corner, we began to smell it. The food. Immediately we knew we were in the right place. I have been dying to go to a Four

to experience it with three of my closest friends Saturday, March 24. I don’t know that it’s pos-sible to put into words what an experience dining with them is like, but I’m going to do my best. If you have never heard of this culinary bunch before, let me explain what they do. Typi-cally two times a month, a group of friends, who all have backgrounds at some of Athens most beloved restaurants, get together and cook din-ner. This is no ordinary meal though. The group creates meals based on what’s in season and only uses sustainable ingredients that they then pair with incredible wines and spirits. They open up their adorable green house to 24 guests and

them wanting to lick their plate it’s so good. The dinners have become so popular that a seat at one of the two long wooden tables in their white walled dining room is almost im-possible to come by. They announce the dinner a few days before it’s happening by email and

attempt was unlucky. I got on to their website at 12:01 p.m. and the entire dinner was already

sold out. In case you were wondering, the sign-up went live at noon. The second time around I

-ing the page until it was time. I managed to snag four seats this go-around and the text messages I sent out to my friends announcing we had seats were followed by endless rows of exclama-tion points.

The dinner far exceeded all my expec-tations and will forever go down as one of my favorite nights in Athens. I have to talk about the food before I go on any further though. I don’t know what to say other than that it was amazing and wonderful and oh so good down

squid-cased sausage, surrounded by the best mushrooms I have ever had in my life, morels.

Following that, we were served a spring onion soup with what ended up being my favorite wine of the evening. Country fried venison that was instantly light because of the perfect touch of or-ange zest led us into the main event of the eve-ning, the heritage farms Cheshire pork chop. It was so good people were picking up the bone to try and get every last bite they could. The grand

-net. Even my roommate who isn’t a fan of blue cheese adored the dish. It was frozen perfection. It wasn’t just the incredibly delicious and creative food that left me wanting more, but the people and the conversations, the whole experi-ence that is at the core of every great meal. There were two stand-out moments dur-ing the night for me that were just so perfectly Athens. It happened to be Patterson Hood of The Drive-By Trucker’s birthday the night we were there, so the entire room got to serenade him with Happy Birthday. How many people get to do that? Then, we ended the night by pass-ing around a communal glass of moonshine. Yes, you read that correctly, moonshine. As I looked around the room at the 23 other faces talking and laughing while they passed the glass around, I couldn’t help but feel like we were all a part of something bigger than just a meal. And that feeling alone was worth the price of admis-sion.

Compiled by Pierce Persons Spotlight on future Dawg: Davis McLanahan

What is your favorite UGA sporting event to go to and why?

My favorite sport at UGA is gymnastics. I love going to the Gym Dog meets! I like going to them because the girls are athletic. My favorite parts are watching them on the bars and when they dance.

Temple and Rhodes are the proud parents of second grader Davis McLanahan. Davis along with her brother William and sister Clara are huge bulldog fans! We asked Davis a few questions about what aspects of UGA she likes the best.

What is your favorite thing about UGA?

My favorite thing about UGA is how Stegeman can change into different things. One day it is the basketball court, one day the gymnastics meet is there, and the next day Perfectly Polished is there.

What is a funny memory you have of Spike?

At one of the basketball games all the boys kept pushing him down and he kept falling over. It was really funny but I felt bad for him.

What is your favorite thing that Hairy Dawg does?

My favorite thing that Hairy Dawg does is at a football game. I love when he runs from side to side

Who is your favorite Gym Dog?

My favorite Gym Dog is Kat Ding. She is my favorite because she is really good at the bars which are my favorite. Also, she is very pretty.
