Vance Leavypublisher Let the summer celebration begin

As we enter the summer season, it’s a greattime to celebrate here in Athens.

First let’s celebrate how nice it is to see acommunity that thrives because of so many gen-erous folks.

On page 9 of this issue, you will find photosfrom the Light the Night corporate breakfastheld recently.

Corporate Walk chair, Mark Williamssummed his goal of serving by saying, “I am pas-sionate about connecting corporations in theAthens community to unite together to raiseawareness and funds to support The Leukemiaand Lymphoma Society (LLS). I serve and walkin memory of my father, Jimmy Williams. Mygoal is to prepare the way for “cancer” to be aword only learned from history books. Relent-lessly, we must fight together to find a cure.”

And opposite this page, the Athens RegionalFoundation recently recognized folks in thecommunity who see the tremendous benefit inhaving a top-notched health system, which iscertainly something worth celebrating.

At UGA, it’s a great time to celebrate all theathletic programs for another year of success onthe playing field and in the classroom.

And if you were lucky enough to attend anyof the NCAA Finals tennis over the last twoweeks, then I know you will join me in cele-brating all the folks who put in countless hoursto make sure UGA and Athens remain the besthost site for the NCAA Championships. It trulyis remarkable how players from schools likeStanford, USC and UVA view Athens as the hometo NCAA tennis. Of course, that has so much todo with the legendary Dan Magill whose passionand charisma for the collegiate game is exactlywhat has made it so huge. Bravo Coach Magill… you truly are the man!

Also, in this issue of BI Athens, we arepumped to celebrate this year’s AthFest that hitsdowntown in the coming weeks. Our musicguru, Daniel Peiken has done his best ‘cliff notes’in the center spread (pages 6, 7). But really tocomprehend the amount of bands that will beplaying in Athens June 20-24, you must go to

www.athfest.com. Practically every bar/club indowntown has a full slate of acts for four days. And while of course we celebrate all the folks in-volved in pulling AthFest off, let’s not forgetabout all the current musicians who love to honein their skills in the Classic City. Nor should weforget about the Athens Music pioneers whohave made this town what it is in the musicworld.

Without question, if you’re in town in fewweeks, then spend the $20 on a wristband, soyou have access to all the bells and whistles ofAthFest. I assure you there will be plenty of cel-ebrating going on downtown.

Let’s face it, there’s no better time to cele-brate than the summer.

On page 11, we even have home-bodies cov-ered with a great appetizer and cocktail fromSpeakeasy owner Patrick Anderson. Or you canventure out and enjoy Speakeasy in person. Youdefinitely will not be disappointed.Yummy!

Well, gotta run as it’s time to let the SummerCelebration begin … Cheers!

With the sun setting on another Georgia athletic season, and aftera lifetime of love, 22 years in Athens, 19 campaigns as the play-by-playvoice of Lady Dogs Basketball, 18 seasons of Bulldog Baseball, and astint of 12 as the color man for Men’s Hoops it is time for a smiling strolldown a memory lane of winter, spring and early summer red andblack memories of the last two-plus decades.

• In the Spring of 1993, trailing UCLA 4-2 in the national semi-finals of the NCAA Men’s Tennis Championships in Athens, the Bull-dogs swept the doubles, capped by “The Richmond Rifle” WadeMcGuire and Bobby Mariencheck’s victory at No. 1. Due to a heavyrainstorm, and after a lengthy delay – during which five points tavernslubricated and reloaded the Georgia faithful – the match moved in-doors. The Lindsey Hopkins Indoor Courts capacity is right at 1,000.There were at least 2,500 in the building and the raucous crowdhelped deliver this memorable triumph, which concluded at around2:30 past midnight.

• It was my second season of calling Lady Dog games, and AndyLanders’ squad made it to the Elite Eight. Things weren’t looking goodagainst top-seeded Colorado. Down 11 with just over six minutes togo, Georgia erupted for a furious rally led by the incredible clutchshooting and defense of Kedra Holland. The Lady Dogs prevailed bythree and embarked on the first of three final four trips over a five yearstretch.

• The following year, down 11 in the Elite Eight to top-seededLouisiana Tech midway through the second half, Georgia erupted foranother furious rally, paced by Saudia Roundtree’s 37 points, and wonby 14, earning a second consecutive trip to the Final Four.

• Behind a couple of near triple-doubles from Kelly Miller, theLady Dogs rolled past Clemson and Iowa State to make it to the 1999Final Four. It would be a grand year for Georgia athletics, as the Bull-dogs captured national championships in Men’s Tennis, Men’s Golf,Women’s Swimming and Gymnastics – garnering rings of a dynamicquartet of head coaches: Manuel Diaz, Chris Haack, Jack Bauerle andSuzanne Yoculan.

• After a 47-year drought, Georgia clinched the 2001 South-eastern Conference title, the program’s first since 1954. What followed

in the postseason was quite unforgettable. Roy Hobbs could not haveperformed in fiction as remarkably as Jeff Keppinger did at Foley Field. In an NCAA Regional elimination game against Georgia Southern, hehit for the cycle. The following day against Coastal Carolina, he wentfive-for-five with three homers, including the game-winning two-runshot with two out in the ninth. He would then lead the Bulldogs tothe College World Series with a lights out performance against FloridaState in the Super–Regional. Meanwhile at the adjacent Dan MagillTennis Complex, Georgia won the national championship, while All-American Matias Boeker won the singles and doubles title.

• Later that summer, my close friend David Perno was namedGeorgia’s head baseball coach. It was one of the happiest happeningsof my life, and in the years to come, my favorite memories wouldcome with him at the helm.

• After watching Georgia lose a bunch of times at Rupp Arena,Georgia beat Kentucky in 2002 in Lexington in Men’s Basketball. Thatwas a special staff that had a family atmosphere, and that was a nightI’ll never forget.

• With unforgettable clutch homers from Bobby Felmy, JasonJacobs and Clint Sammons, and a gutsy performance from WillStartup, Georgia bounced back from a 10-9 loss to Clemson – a gamethe Dogs led 9-2 – to overcome a 6-4 ninth inning deficit (when thebaseballs came flying out of the bucket) to win 7-6 in 10. The fol-lowing weekend, spurred by Johnathan Wyatt’s unforgettable roundtripper, Georgia swept the Super-Regional over Tech on the Flats, be-coming the first of eight teams that season to punch the ticket toOmaha and the College World Series. Standing on the diamond at3:30 that Saturday afternoon, soaking it in, was one of the most sur-real and gratifying moments I’ve ever enjoyed.

• In early June 2005, waiting on my buddy Rob to get married,Georgia’s Men’s Golf team cruised to the national championship inCaves Valley, Maryland by nine strokes over second place Tech. In-credibly, all five Georgia golfers fired a 70. We rang the chapel bellthat day.

• Facing a total of five elimination games in the 2006 Regionaland Super-Regional at Foley Field, the Bulldogs beat Florida State and

South Carolina to earn a third College World Series trip in six years.• Led by Big John Isner, Georgia’s powerhouse 2007 squad blis-

tered the competition to win the 2007 national championship with anundefeated record. Only two teams lost to the Bulldogs 4-2. Georgiabeat everyone else 4-1 or 4-0.

• In 2008, Georgia won the SEC baseball championship in WeekNine of league play, the only team to do so prior to the final weekendunder the current 30-game schedule. After hitting a brief slide, that in-cluded a stunning Athens Regional loss to David Lipscomb, Georgiastormed back to Omaha. The Bulldogs rolled through the loser’sbracket in the Regional, blasting Tech 8-0 and 18-6. Then in the Super, after splitting the first two with N.C. State, Georgia hung a nine-spotin the first and rolled past the Wolfpack 17-8 to earn another berth inthe College World Series. In the eighth, with the crowd anticipatingit would be his final Foley Field at bat, the great Gordon Beckhamhomered to break the school record and send the throng into a frenzymatched only by Keppinger’s game-winner seven seasons prior. Pernojoined the likes of LSU icon Skip Bertman and Miami legend RonFraser in an elite group of three College World Series berths in their firstseven years as a head coach. In Omaha, the Bulldogs pieced togetherunforgettable victories over Miami and Stanford. Georgia battled to theCWS Finals and came up one game shy of the whole enchilada.

• From 2007-10, it was my true pleasure to call every game thatLady Dog star point guard Ashley Houts played. No Georgia athleteever had more heart.

• One year ago, with their backs against the wall, Georgia wonthree thrillers on the diamond in Birmingham to clinch a winningrecord and earn a berth in the NCAA Tournament. Tragically, theamazingly brave Chance Veazey and Jonathan Taylor were paralyzedover a two year period. To see these two courageous young Bulldogshandle these awful accidents with such class and with so many smilesoffers infinite perspective and inspiration.

Vince Dooley used to always say, “the highs are never as high,as the lows are low.” The older one gets, the more that rings true. Butit’s that unbreakable loyalty and love that makes those great triumphssimply unforgettable.

Some folks just don't get it, but I do.Grab some friends, but not too many or youwon't be able to move freely from one venue toanother. Put your schedule together but don'tfreak out if you change your plans, that's part ofthe fun. Put on some comfortable shoes and stickin your ear plugs. It's gonna get hot, it's gonnaget crowded and it's gonna get loud. Make sure todrink lots of water in between your beers andwear a hat and/or sunscreen. Don't worry abouttrying not to sweat 'cause you already are. Youcan't be in two places at one time and being inthree is even harder. If you see me running fromone venue to another, please say 'hello', but don'tslow me down. Buy an AthFest wristband andyou will get into every one of these concerts forfree. See you at the Rock Show! Athfest is just around the corner and if you’re as excited as I am you have already checked the lineup for this year. Someone new on the list is singer/

is a self-taught musician whose music is capturing the hearts of fans nationwide. This 22-year-old has an incredibly melodic voice that you must hear. It’s hard to choose my favorite song of hers because all of them are worth listening to. If I haven’t sold you, please read this interview with Emily. She is extremely charming and genuine and you will fall in love with this up and coming artist.

I taught myself how to play the guitar when I was a senior in high school. I used to play my dad’s old Yamaha guitar that he bought for $100 in college. I would sit in his closet

friends started asking me to play at their parties. Before I knew it I was playing a “CD

on a brand new EP that I titled “Paper Heart”.

I’ve been pursuing music professionally and full-time for about a year now. I was a student at the University of Georgia when I recorded my EP, Paper Heart. The songs on that album were

-ing the possibility of playing music full time when I graduated, but mid-way through the second semester of my junior year the music began to take off. I was doing all of my own booking and management, playing anywhere from three-four times per

length record. So I dropped out of school in March of 2011 to pursue music full time.

I love music and I love how it makes people feel. I’ve always needed music for everything that I do--from running and cook-ing to road trips and dancing-- and I love being able to be part of the soundtrack to peoples lives. Writing and perform-ing music brings me more joy than anything. My songs are

inspiration from my friends’ relationships. But I’ve noticed that the more I practice songwriting the more I enjoy making up stories to write a song about. Several of the songs off of my

real feelings. It’s fun to play with different styles in the creative process of songwriting.

centered around catchy melodies. But I think that one of the things that sets my music apart from the generic pop genre is that I put so much time into my lyrics. Every line is thought through and intentional. I hope that there’s an aspect to my music that draws people in and lets them relate. Sometimes I

title as well. I’ve come to terms with my southern roots and there’s no need to sing like I don’t have a little bit of a twang. So maybe I’m folk-pop.

You’re performing at Athfest this

I’ve become friends with Troy Aubrey through playing at the Melting Point. Troy mentioned it in passing so I decided to apply. I’m so excited to play this year! I’ve heard about it for years and never been in Athens during the summer to actually play. I can’t wait.

What are you looking forward to

I think that a different crowd will be at Athfest than I usually play for. I’m really excited to meet some new folks and try out some fun new songs.

The music video for Rooftop from your album Paper Heart (2010)

I worked with Mark Bryan and Creative Forge Productions on the Rooftop video. Those guys just happened to be friends with Bill Murray and had the crazy idea of inviting him out to the video shoot. So Mark left a copy of my CD on the dog house on his porch and he responded with a text saying “woof woof.” We had no idea whether or not he’d show up, but he did! He was so nice and easy to work with, and of course hilarious. It was the perfect touch to add to the video. I couldn’t believe it.

You released your second album Red Balloon on January 31 of this year.

It was a huge accomplishment for me! I raised all of the funds for the album through-Kickstarter.com. I’m so unbelievably grateful to my friends, family and fans who sup-ported me. There’s no way I would’ve been able to make it happen without them. I’m excited to have some of my most recent material out and available! But the writing process never ends, so I’ll hopefully have something new out again soon.

but mainly I want to be a positive role model for other people who have dreams. I’ve been able to meet people who look up to me for pursuing my dream and go away in-spired to pursue their own. I want to be that for people and I want them to listen to my music and feel a little more understood.

Tennis

The 2012 tennis team had a great deal of promise when they opened up their campaign back in January. And that promise turned into a tangible bit of success as they reached a ranking of number two nation-ally prior to the start of the NCAA tournament. With Athens playing host this year, the Dawgs had hopesof capturing another NCAA title, their last coming in 2008. But it was not to be as Georgia fell to Pepper-dine in the quarterfinals. But the loss was nothing to hang their heads about. Georgia was down and outmultiple times throughout the match but continued to battle back and was able to bring the overallmatch score to 3-3. It then came down to senior Sadio Doumbia on court three who forced a third setbut was unable to finish off his opponent. And so the Dawgs season ended there with a 3-4 loss. Severalof the players on the team continued their season though by being invited to play in the individual sin-gles tournament. Wil Spencer highlighted for Georgia making it to the round of 16. It was much a simi-lar fate for the women’s team as they fell in the round of 16 to Duke. However, the individualtournament saw much more success for the women. Chelsey Gullickson accomplished an astonishingfeat by becoming an 8-time All-American in her senior year. (4 times in singles and 4 times in doubles). She and her doubles partner Nadja Gilchrist had a nice run in the doubles tournament reaching thechampionship round before falling to the team from Stanford.

Golf

The men’s golf season is not yet over as they have made it to NCAA Championships. Coach Haack andcompany reached the tournament after finishing fourth in regionals. Now, the Dawgs will match up withCentral Florida and Iowa for the first 54-holes of stroke play. If the Dawgs are in the top-8 after that, theywill then move into 54-holes of match play. The fact that the team even made the NCAA Championshipsis quite the accomplishment considering that the lineup is made up of one junior, three sophomores anda freshman; not a single senior. Even if they don’t win a national championship, the future is mightybright for the men’s golf team. The tournament begins this week at the beautiful Rivera Club in PacificPalisades, CA.The women’s golf team was not quite as fortunate. They did not perform as well as theyhad expected to and weren’t able to make it out of regionals. Still, two women’s golfers played wellthroughout the tournament and the season as a whole earning All-American honors. Emilie Burgerearned the honor for the first time in her career but this was the 4th honor for senior Marta Silva Zamorawho became just the second to become a four-time All-American in Georgia women’s golf history.

Softball

After a heartbreaking loss in the super regionals, the Dawg’s season came to a close this past Sunday. Aftersplitting the series 1-1 with Tennessee, a berth in the college world series came down to a deciding gamethree. After having their horns locked through five innings, the Dawgs broke through in the fifth with arun to take the lead. But the Vols rallied in their next at bat to score 2 runs. They were able to close thegame out and advance on the 2-1 win. It was a heck of a season for the team as they finished the 2012campaign with and overall record of 45-17. There will be plenty of post-season awards coming the wayof many members of the team in the coming weeks.

Track and Field

There is plenty to cheer about for the track and field teams of Georgia. Their post-season is still going onand lots of Dawgs are still competing. Both the 4x100-meter and 4x-400-meter relay teams punchedtheir ticket to the NCAA finals by finishing in the top-12 in qualifiers. Senior Torrin Lawrence will begoing for even more accolades tis post-season as he will be competing in the 400. In the field events,Hilenn James and Caleb Whitener will both be representing UGA in the shot put. Georgia also has repre-sentatives competing in the discus, javelin, pole vault, hammer throw and high jump. It would not be afar reach to expect these Bulldogs to have very successful events over the next week or so.

Baseball

It was a tough season for the Diamond Dogs and that only continued as the Dawgs failed to receive aberth in an NCAA Regional. Their 31-26 overall record did not indicate how well they actually playedthroughout the season. Behind the good pitching of redshirt sophomore Alex Wood (7-3, 2.73 ERA), theDawgs found themselves on the losing end of some close ball games throughout the year. Often times, itwas the offense that sputtered and caused issues. Good news is that the high points of the offense will beback next year for the Dawgs. Freshman outfielder Hunter Cole led the team with seven home-runs andhe’ll look to improve on that in the 2013 campaign. He’ll join junior Curt Powell who led the team witha .355 average. Couple those factors with some of the improvements that have been approved for FoleyField and the Diamond Dogs will be back in the NCAA Regionals and College World Series before we allknow it. Alex Wood, Curt Powell, Hunter Cole and Kevin Ruiz were honored by the Southeastern Con-ference Tuesday as the league announced its All-SEC and Community Service teams for baseball.

Spotlight on Athens’ own Speakeasy

One of my favorite restaurants in Athens is Speakeasy. I absolutely love the environment and the tapas and cocktails are always to die for. Patrick Anderson, owner and bartender of Speakeasy, and Chef Wes Chapman came up with a cocktail and an appetizer that would impress any guest at your next dinner party. I had the incredible opportunity to meet both of them and try these recipes. The cocktail Patrick came up with is called Caliente. Not only does it look pretty in the glass, it tastes so good. Chef Wes created the “Pimente” Cheese appetizer. This take on pimento cheese

not heavy. They pair so well together. I had a great time getting to know Patrick and fell even more in love with Speakeasy. The people who work there genuinely love what they do and it comes out in the food and drinks they serve. So I recommend you try these recipes out either at your next summer soiree or with a visit to Speakeasy.

Caliente

Half 1 lime, cut into wedges and squeeze into the glass (leave the lime pieces in the glass). Put two slices of a jalapeno in the glass. Then add a ginger puree (Speakeasy makes this in house).* Muddle all these ingredients together. Get all the good juices out of the lime. Add ice, then add two ounces of tequila. Patrick recommends that you use Puro Verde Silver Organic Tequila. Then add soda water. *If you don’t have a ginger puree on hand then instead of using soda water add ginger ale. Finally shake it all up and enjoy!

“Pimente” Cheese

1 ½ cups of mayo6 cups parmesan ¼ cup cider vinegar3 jalapenos, dicedSalt and pepper3 green onions, chopped

Mix these ingredients all together and set aside. Fry a tortilla or use a crispy tortilla. If neither works for you, Wes recommends using tostadas. Take the cheese mixture and put it on top of the tortilla and broil it in the oven until the cheese starts to bubble. Finish it off with roasted red peppers and basil chiffonade.
