As BI Athens editor, Ryan Scates, says in his note to myright, things are definitely slowing down here in the ClassicCity as the 2010-2011 UGA school year came to an end lastweek. But the ending couldn’t have been any sweeter with theunbelievable win by Russell Henley in the Stadion AthensClassic at Uga. Wow, what a spectacular accomplishment.

As is normally the case, our sports guru, Jeff Dantzler hitthe nail on the head (on page 4) when saying Henley’s ama-teur accolades will go down as one of the most impressive inthe last several years. I will even take it a little further and sayit has to be one of the most impressive in the modern era ofamateur golf.

However what I like best about Henley is the fact thatyou would never know he’s one of the best and brightestgolfers in the world. He’s humble and shows respect to every-one.

Like our cover says, he’s one cool customer. Please enjoy Travis Ragsdale’s story and Q&A on Henley

opposite of this page. I love the fact that he will miss the awe-some food in Athens and the fellowship of his teammates. While most of us that graduated from UGA didn’t play sports,I would bet the majority would agree that the food (and per-haps a few libations) and friends are what made the time inAthens so special.

For Henley, he has a few more opportunities to makehistory with his teammates, as the NCAAs will be held overthe next few weeks. Here’s hoping for a National Title for himand his boys.

Before I shift completely away from golf, I must givekudos to everyone involved in putting on the Stadion Classic.I hope all Athenians appreciate such a quality event being heldhere every May. And perhaps consider supporting the tour-nament next year, either monetarily or as a volunteer.

While Russell’s feat earned him our cover shot, RonCourson, UGA’s assistant athletic director for sport medicineand the UGA sports medicine staff did something even moreamazing last week saving the life of Mississippi State’s directorof track and field who collapsed with cardiac arrest during thefirst day of the SECs Championships at the Spec Towns track.

Ironically, Courson was scheduled to give a speech onsudden cardiac arrest a couple days later in Charlotte. Themain aspects of the speech were to include that the key to anemergency plan is preparation. Thankfully Courson and histeam had planned and rehearsed many times over, and per-formed brilliantly when the unfortunate situation arose. Weare so thankful to have such talented folks in our athletic de-partment.

Switching gears one last time, an issue of BI Athens isn’tcomplete without plenty of photos and a few features to en-courage everyone to get out and have some fun in the com-munity. Intern Chelsea Swanhart gives us 10 things to doover the Maymester on page 6. All of them sound like a blastto me. And for the foodies, Cheri’s visit with David Allen onour back page certainly should provide some motivation to allthe back yard grillers out there. And Daniel Peiken has de-livered again on page 10 for the folks looking for the bestmusic in town over the next few issues. And he has promisedme something special in our next issue in preparation forAthFest that will be held June 22-26.

Enjoy this issue and get out in Athens and have somefun, particularly while the weather is still conducive for it.Cheers!

Similar to someone shutting off a water faucet, the steady stream of students in and out of Athenshas trickled down to a slow drip as another semes-ter is put in the books at UGA.

Being out and about in downtown Athens thenight after graduation is always a fun time. As if on-cue, Athens locals emerge from all corners of townand reclaim their territory from those pesky un-dergrads who are back in Atlanta or Lawrencevilleor who-knows-where until mid-August. In a 72-hour timeframe, the scene on Broad Street changesfrom one filled with frantic anxiety about exams, toone with proud moments under the arch, and thenfinally to a slow-paced, relaxed gait where every-one’s biggest goal seems to be just outlasting theheat.

And while there is certainly nothing wrongwith slowing down your pace while waiting for thesummer months to pass, there are some pretty bigevents on tap in the next few weeks that you wouldbe silly to let pass by.

First off, the Diamond Dawgs, who claim thenation’s toughest schedule, are battling for positionto play into the NCAA baseball tournament. Thebiggest hurdle for the Dawgs’ postseason hopes willbe simply meeting the bare minimum requirementfor eligibility: a winning record. As of press timethe baseball team sits at a .500 record with crucialcontests against Kennesaw State and Vanderbilt up-coming before the team heads to Hoover, Alabamafor the SEC Tournament. Between competing in aSEC eastern division that has had three differentteams ranked #1 in the nation over the course ofthe season (Vanderbilt, Florida and South Car-olina), and battling with teammate Johnathan Tay-lor as he fights back from a spinal injury, thisDiamond Dawg squad deserves your support asthey head into the home stretch.

Further, both the men’s and women’s tennissquads held serve through the first two rounds ofthe NCAA Tournament in Athens, and now arepoised to chase respective NCAA Titles at theChampionship tournament in Palo Alto. Com-bined with the fact that the Softball team will behosting FSU, Ga. State and UAB in an NCAA Re-gional Tournament at Jack Turner Stadium begin-ning Friday, May 20th, there is still plenty to cheerfor as many spring sports hit championship season!

On the cultural side of things, I have to rec-ommend that you make an effort to head over tothe Melting Point to catch Dawes on Thursday, May19th. This is a band that is on track to join the likesof Band of Horses and Kings of Leon on the list ofbands you can say that you saw in Athens just be-fore they exploded onto the national scene. Trustme, it will be worth your time.

Well what do you know, I am running short onspace and I feel like I have just scratched the tip ofthe iceberg regarding events not to miss duringwhat feels like a lazy summer in Athens. I hope tosee you out cheering on the Dawgs or jamming tosome crunchy tunes around town soon!

Pros, amateurs, average joe weekend golfers, itdoesn’t really matter to Russell Henley; he’ll beatyou no matter what. Which is exactly what he didat the Stadion Classic in Athens. The UGA golfer, who graduated just last week, became the secondamateur golfer to ever win a Nationwide tourevent since it’s inception in 1990. Henley shot a 3-under 68 in the final round of the tournament tobeat 33-year old Troy Kelly by two strokes. Withthe win, Henley would receive an automatic ex-emption for the rest of this year on the Nationwidetour.

Good thing for the golfers on the tour thatHenley is going to pass on the invite.

“I’m going to keep my amateur status throughthe summer and hopefully turn pro in the fall,”said Henley.

Henley dominated the field Thursday, Fridayand Saturday going into Sunday with a share ofthe lead at 9-under. However, when Henleywalked up to the 18th tee on Sunday with a oneshot lead and pulled his drive to the left, he’lladmit he started to feel the pressure just a bit.

“There’s a couple magnolia trees over there onthe left and I was just hoping I wasn’t going to beright under one of those,” said Henley, “I knew if Iwasn’t right under one of those I could somehowhit it on the green or at least close to it.”

Henley was able to recover from the pulled teeshot and after Kelly missed his birdie attempt,Henley only had a two-foot tap in before he wasable to enjoy the roars of the crowd on the 18thgreen.

With this win, Russell Henley has cemented forhimself a future in the ranks of professional golf, but Athens and UGA will always be in his memory.

Here are a few questions for one cool customer ...

What was your favorite part about the StadionClassic? Probably coming up on 17 everyday with all theGeorgia fans up there cheering for me. Just being aGeorgia Bulldog at that tournament and havingeverybody on your side. There’s no better feelingthan that.

What’s your favorite hole on the UGA course?I’d have to say number 12 because there’s so muchrisk-reward back there. A lot can happen, you canmake a three or you could make a seven. You justhave to man-up and hit a shot on that one.

What are you going to miss most about UGA andAthens?I’m really going to miss all the great places to eatin Athens. That’s one of the coolest things aboutAthens. But the main thing I’m going to miss isbeing around ten guys everyday that like to do theexact same thing I like to do. I don’t think you canget that when you turn pro. I’m going to miss theteam.

What’s your best memory as a UGA golfer? So far, it’s been winning the SEC championships.Hopefully I can have a better one in the next cou-ple weeks with the NCAAs coming up.

Way to go Russell ... 2011 Stadion Classic championBy Travis Ragsdale

When Nationwide Tour’s Athens event moved from Jen-nings Mill Country Club to the beautiful and treacherous UGAGolf Course, with the University as the host, one of the perkswas that a pair of Bulldog players would earn berths in the tour-nament.

This is huge for the powerhouse Bulldog program, whichunder the watch of Chris Haack, has captured two nationalchampionships, seven Southeastern Conference crowns, twicefinished as the No. 1 ranked team in the country, been the na-tional runner-up and advanced to the Final Four of the NCAAsfirst ever match-play format.

On this incredible run of success, the Bulldogs have fea-tured a slew of star performers, several of whom, includingBubba Watson, Ryuji Imada and Chris Kirk are excelling on thePGA Tour.

Haack’s current edition is littered with talent, including thisseason’s two qualifiers for the Stadion Athens Classic at UGA,Harris English and Russell Henley.

Well these two young men, against a deep and talented fielddid something very impressive.

English wound up in the tournament’s top 20, finishingfour under par.

And Henley, well he did something quite historic. He won the thing. Becoming just the second amateur to win a Nationwide

Tour event, Henley followed up his opening round score of one-over 72, with a pair of blistering 66s. In the lead and in the finalgroup, Henley shook off a bogey on Sunday’s first hole to post a68 and cruise to a two-shot victory.

On the heels of last season’s memorable standout perform-

ance at immaculate Pebble Beach at the United States Open,Henley – playing the final round with this year’s Masters Cham-pion Charl Schwartzel – was the low amateur and finished in atie for 16th.

Chris Brame, my 960 The Ref afternoon talk show co-host,did some impressive research and found that only four playersin the Stadion Classic have ever finished higher in a professionalmajor championship, and that includes 49-year old Steve Pate, prepping for the Champion’s tour, who has a top ten in the Mas-ters, US Open, British Open and PGA – including a third placeshowing at Augusta. Figure that in with Henley’s numerousrounds at the Bulldogs home course, and it really shouldn’t comeas such a surprise that he contended, right?

But he’s an amateur, and just finished finals. Graduationwas approaching, and the NCAA Championships. These areseasoned pros, many of whom have been on the PGA tour, andmany more of whom are on their way to golf’s biggest stage.

That’s a lot of pressure, with circumstances making thechance of success, even with Henley’s inherit home-course ad-vantage, highly unlikely.

Again, it had happened only once before. In the last quarter-century, it happened only twice on the

PGA Tour, amateurs winning an event. Scott Verplank did it.So did Phil Mickleson.

As Henley was marching towards victory, I was followingthe scoring on my computer while calling Georgia’s Sunday base-ball game at Auburn. The Bulldogs had fallen behind 8-0 in thefirst inning.

I was pulling hard for Russell, with various friends on thecourse keeping me up to date with the nuances of his final round

via text. It wasn’t looking good for the Dogs. But it was looking good for Russell. He won it. I quickly texted congratulations to coach Haack and told

him to please pass those well wishes along to Henley. Well next thing you know, the Dogs did a little something

special in the loveliest village on the plains. Auburn walked fivein the ninth, and hit another. Chase Davidson blasted a three runhomer and Carson Schilling got a hit.

Then with two out and the bases loaded, star shortstop KyleFarmer blasted a gargantuan two-out grand slam home run overAuburn’s left field green monster. It capped a nine-run ninth.Georgia led 14-11, and Tyler Maloof closed out the Tiger ninth, the game ending on a 6-3 double play turned by Framer.

In our postgame show, I informed a jubilant Bulldog coachDavid Perno that Henley had won the Stadion Classic at UGA.

Perno, himself a standout golfer – though not quite as goodas his brother Donn, head pro extraordinaire at spectacularPeachtree in Atlanta – was elated with the day, and said he wasnot surprised, having played with Henley at UGA earlier in theyear.

It was a great day for Georgia, most notably of course forHenley, who is putting together what will go down as one of themost impressive amateur resumes for an American golfer overthe past several years.

Next on his agenda: hoping to help lead the Bulldogs to arun at the national championship.

School’s out for the summer. No more colossal books to read, 8 a.m. wake-up calls or pulling all-nighters for three glorious months; for most students that is. The Maymester, one of the most dreaded words at UGA, will begin on May 17, but that doesn’t mean these students’ summer fun has completely gone out the Orbit bus window. There are plenty of excit-ing things to do during the summer in Athens, and below is a guide to help everyone, even Maymester students, have a little fun.

1. Big Dogs on the River: Enjoy the magnificence of the Middle Oconee River while kayaking down a 3.5 mile-long rivertrail with a group of friends. An air-conditioned shuttle transports kayakers upstream where individuals can then go at their own pace on Big Dogs kayaks and end up back at their own vehicle in the end.

2. Athens Food Tours: Explore Athens’ local food on three-hour walking tours to 6-8 local restaurants and shops. The tours include food, drink, entertainment and history that make for an unforgettable experience. The walking pace is slow and rests at each eatery make the tours suitable for all ages and levels of fitness.

3. Canopy Studio: Canopy Studio community arts center offers performances and classes in flying dance trapeze, movement education and performance arts. Canopy Studio is also available for rental for parties and offers private lessons for the adventurous. One of our favorite chefs, Peter Dale of The National, is a huge fan of Canopy Studio!

4. State Botanical Garden of Georgia: As one of Athens’ most popular attractions, this 313-acre botanical garden is the perfect place for a cultural, educational and recreational experience. In addition, the Alice Hand Callaway Visitor Center & Conservatory is a beautiful setting for concerts, lectures and art exhibitions.

5. Terrapin Beer Co.: Terrapin Brewery is open to the public for tours and tastings every Wednesday, Thurs-day, Friday, and Saturday from 5:30 - 7:30. Souvenir glasses for tasting are $10 each and a portion goes to support local charities. There is also live music!

6. Ciné: An art house located right in the heart of Downtown Athens that screens the latest independent and international films, documentaries, festival discoveries and classic movies. Ciné also features an exhibit gallery by local artists, and the CinéBar offers a variety of cocktails and snacks. Dinner and a Movie packages are also available with neighboring restaurant, The National.

7. Athens Farmers’ Market: Athens Farmers Market is a non-profit organization of local farmers, craftspeo-ple and volunteers coming together to make local naturally grown food, crafts and works of art available to all. All food available is grown in their soil by their farmers and shopping here is a fantastic way to become part of the Slow Food movement in Athens.

8. The Athens Heritage Tour: This tour of historic Athens is a 90 minute guided tour of Athens that’s begins in the oldest house in Athens. The tour will show the world’s only double barrel canon and the historic downtown district in Athens. Make reservations!

9. Classic City Rollergirls: If you are looking for something out of the norm, Athens’ all-female roller derby league is sure to impress. During three periods of hard-hitting roller derby are fun for families and groups of friends.

10. UGA Sports: Don’t forget to support the Bulldawgs even when school is out! Georgia baseball, softball, tennis and track & field all compete into the summer. Show your Georgia pride by attending sporting events and cheering on the Dawgs.

May is a great month in Athens and students, tourists and Athens locals alike have a lot to look forward to. Enjoy summer and good luck Maymester students!

Spotlight on Natalie GlennNatalie Glenn uses her expertise as an alumna from the University of Georgia to help her as Director of Alumni Relations for the Terry College of Business. She graduated in 2002 from the Grady School of Journalism and Mass Communication with a degree in Public Relations. Natalie Glenn is the president of the Junior League of Athens and is the wife of UGA tennis coach, Will Glenn. She has diligently contributed to UGA over the years.

What’s your main goal as president of the Junior League of Athens? My main goal has been to create team atmosphere and unite us in our mission to positively impact the community through the effective action of trained volunteers, something that really makes the League unique. The League is blessed with talented and committed volunteers with servants’ hearts and I think that is why we are able to accomplish so many things.

I have the pleasure of working with our talented alumni near and far. Our regional alumni networks in cities such as New York City, Washington DC, Charlotte, and Jacksonville keep long distance dawgs connected to the college. I am the liaison for both our alumni board and young alumni board, both 60-member advisory boards that serve to support the pro-

-tion between alumni and the institution. I work with our board members to coordinate Terry Third Thursday, a breakfast speaker series for the Atlanta business community featuring

and global perspectives on business and innovation.

What’s your favorite movie?

and cinematography and that period of history.

Who’s your favorite band/artist?I like a variety of music - the Avett Brothers, Zac Brown Band, Lionel Richie, but I’m really a talk radio junkie.

When was the last time you laughed so hard you cried?I can’t remember for sure but undoubtedly it was at something Will said or did.

Spring Chicken

David likes to get smaller 2-2 1/2 lb. birds from Plow Point Farms. He thinks it is important to use a brine and then a good rub. He likes Fire and Flavor rubs, some from Shiraz or to make his own. To finish this chicken, he made a blood orange honey habanera sauce. He is a big fan of anything with blood oranges and even better if it has a little heat.

Brine:1/2 cup kosher salt3/4 cup sugar1 tablespoon pink peppercorns1 1/2 gallons of water

Brine the birds an hour per pound. Rub with seasoning. Cook on the Big Green Egg. Every so often squeeze brine and vinegar on the birds. When finished cover with foil and let sit for ten minutes.

Blood orange honey habanera sauce:Tbs. minced garlicTbs. minced shallotstsp. cracked black peppertsp. crushed red pepper3 Tbs. extra virgin olive oil1/2 cup Savannah Bee Co honey1/2 cup low sodium soy sauce or Tamari3 blood oranges, peeled, whites removed and puree in blender1 1/2 habanera, minced, seeds removed for less heat

Saute garlic, shallots and habanera in olive oil until tender. Add other ingredients heating on low.

In the kitchen with David Allen

David Allen is back in Athens growing his dental practice in Haw-thorne Park. It was a delight to meet him and his wife April, particularly to get the chance to see him in action in the kitchen and on the Big Green Egg. It’s a blast to hang out with someone who is into the art of food and willing to gab for hours about favorite food regions or where to buy the best ingredients. Travels to Thailand only solidified his love for Asian cuisine but he has a soft spot for the burgeoning food movement in New Orleans too. David Chang’s cookbook ‘Momo Fuko’ is a source of inspi-ration and direction for how David Allen takes his own southern based cooking style and infuses it with Asian flavors. He says the key to both styles is using the freshest ingredients. I think he likes adding a spicy kick to our good ole south. He does it well as our spring supper was zesty not only in taste but spirit! Visit guide2athens website to see more of the photoshoot including all the recipes and “how to” for this fabulous spring supper of chicken with a blood orange honey habanera sauce, grilled artichoke hearts with a shallot butter sauce, grilled corn with ancho chipotle butter and a red leaf salad with hearts of palm and Parmigiano-Reggiano.
