Vance Leavypublisher Enjoying the tastes, sounds and sports of this town

With the Super Bowl and another UGA footballsigning class in the books, there’s no better time to getout in Athens for all that she offers. And boy isn’t itamazing the variety of things there are to do in this in-credible town.

If you don’t believe me, then just take a look at thisissue of BI Athens.

On page 10, you have realtor by day, music junkieby night, Daniel Peiken showing our readers where he’sbeen lately on the concert circuit. And even better hisrecommendations on what bands to go see in the com-ing weeks? I must say Cheri and I are pretty jealous ofthe seat Daniel had a few weeks back for the WidespreadPanic shows in Atlanta. His photos definitely show howintimate the acoustic only shows must have been. Happy26th Anniversary to a beloved Athens’ jam band.

Isn’t it nice how music reinvigorates the soul, nomatter what your age? For the folks that attended theGeorgia Theatre recently for the Yacht Rock Revue show, you know exactly what I’m talking about. From collegekids to folks on the wrong side of 30, 40 and 50, the dy-namic and groovy sounds of the ’70s are always a crowdpleaser. Particularly, when wearing polyester and plat-form shoes. The Theatre was certainly rocking that

evening. But as I already stated above, Athens has something

for everyone, which is why it’s so cool. The same night that folks were getting their groove

on at Yacht Rock at the Theatre, David Perno, his teamand several hundred of their supporters were at the Clas-sic Center to kickoff the 2012 Diamond Dogs season. Ifyou believe what Jeff Dantzler says (which I do) on pagefour, 2012 could be special for Perno and company. They are loaded with talent and experience on themound, in the field and in the batter’s box, which shouldmake for an exciting spring and summer at Foley Field.Make your plans now, not to miss the great, Americansound of a baseball coming off a bat.

But as baseball cranks up, there’s still a ton of actionleft for all the other UGA sports that are in full swingright now. On page 8, Travis Ragsdale gives our readershis 411 on several of the teams. Our lady’s basketball, gymnastics and tennis teams are all at the top of theirtrade and have legitimate shots at deep runs once thepost-season arrives. And don’t let me forget about eques-trian, which is poised to go after another national title. And the same goes for Manny Diaz’ men’s tennis team. And you can’t leave out Bauerle’s swimmers and Haack

and Hester’s golfers. All of these sports and their student-athletes are on display about every day somewhere inAthens. Do yourself and your family a favor and get toone real soon.

While I would like to sell you on the prospect ofmaybe taking your significant other to a UGA sportsevent for that beloved holiday that’s on the horizon, I re-alize that probably won’t win your sweetheart over. Sofor those of you (like me), who haven’t done muchthinking about corporate America’s greatest, manufac-tured holiday, fear not as Cheri and our interns have afew ideas for you on page 6. While on that page, alsoenjoy reading about an Athens’ power couple … Kateand Ken Cook.

Well, I’m out of space, which is a good thing as Istill have plenty of other things to tweak throughout thisissue to avoid hate emails from my printer. But before Isay goodbye, I do want to encourage everyone in townto head to the Classic Center on Feb. 19 for the Taste ofAthens. It is so special how so many great eateries givetheir time to support such a worthy cause. And foreveryone on the receiving end of all that yummy food… what a great way to truly get the Taste of Athens inone fun-filled evening!

Opening day is upon us. Georgia opens the 2012 baseball season on Friday February

17th, in the first of a three-game set with the Presbyterian CollegeBlue Hose. Coming off of last year’s memorable campaign, re-turning top notch talent on the mound, at the plate, and in thefield, expectations and hopes are sky high this spring. The Bull-dogs are ranked as high as 11th nationally in the preseason polls.

Entering his 11th year at the helm, David Perno has guidedthe Bulldogs to three College World Series, a pair of SoutheasternConference championships and six of the school’s 11 all-timeNCAA Tournament appearances, including three in the last fouryears.

Under his direction, Georgia has enjoyed excellence, stabilityand excitement – something that a long time sleeping giant of a pro-gram was in dire need of.

Adding to the excitement this year is a typically tough sched-ule – last year’s was far and away the country’s most difficult – fea-turing a whopping 36 home dates. All four non-conference seriesto start the year prior to opening Southeastern Conference play areat home, including a highly anticipated series with PAC-12 powerUCLA. The opportunity is there for the Bulldogs to put togethera nice record before jumping into the grind of the toughest leaguein the land. Note that Georgia’s No. 11 national ranking is sixthamongst SEC schools.

Talk about a tough conference. Four different schools – Geor-gia, LSU, South Carolina and Florida – have played in the finals ofthe College World Series the last four years.

And this season, the league looks tougher than ever. Here’s how the Bulldogs figure to line up and contend for the

conference crown and make the push for a deep run in June:

Outfield Georgia return sophomore centerfielder Conor Welton, who

had a fine freshman season, and senior Peter Verdin, who has ex-cellent speed. Verdin can play either corner outfield spot. Theother projected starter is Hunter Cole, a talented true freshmanwho likely would have been selected in the first three to fourrounds of the Major League Draft, but sent out a letter to big leagueclubs expressing that would absolutely be coming to college atGeorgia.

Ideally, the Dogs would love for Verdin to hit leadoff through-out the season because of his blazing speed and gap power.

Welton was terrific batting second down the stretch last sea-son, and with his speed, ability to the other way and excellent eyeat the plate, he figures to be right back in the two spot this year.

With All-American candidates Kyle Farmer (.308, 8 HR, 58RBI’s in 2011) and Levi Hyams (.332-5-38) projected in the threeand four spots, the top of the Georgia lineup has the potential tobe one of the SEC’s best.

Cole and designated hitter Brett Deloach figure to bat in thefifth and sixth holes.

InfieldWith Farmer at shortstop and Hyams at second base, Geor-

gia’s middle infield is one of the country’s best both at the plate andin the field. Multi-talented Curt Powell, who can play several po-sitions, is back in the hot corner, giving Georgia’s infield superbrange. First base will be manned by a pair of seniors, Colby Mayand Jonathan Hester.

CatcherSophomore Brandon Stephens and senior Joey Delmonico

return behind the plate. Stephens and Welton gave Georgia biglifts as freshmen. One of Stephens highlights was driving in thegame-winning run in Georgia’s NCAA Regional victory overCreighton in Corvallis, Oregon.

PitcherThe aces are back. Junior lefty Alex Wood and senior right-

hander Michael Palazzone are back to anchor the rotation, andTyler Maloof, who had 18 saves, returns to his role as fireman.Palazzone was one of the nation’s top pitchers last season, going10-5 with a 3.14 ERA. And he was better than those numbers. With a break here or there, he could have easily posted a mark inthe 14-2 range. Amongst his highlights last season was a 34-in-ning stretch with a walk.

Blake Dieterich is slated to fill the Sunday spot in the rotation, while Bryan Benzor, an unsung hero from last season, is one of theleague’s top set-up men.

Georgia has also welcomed in numerous young arms whofigure to add a great deal of depth to the staff.

The Bulldogs have done a fine job recruiting and one of thestrengths of this year’s team should be contributions from all fourclasses.

Georgia’s frontline talent is certainly amongst the best in theSEC, and the improved depth lends the potential for this team todo something special.

There could be a bunch of that Foley Field magic of the2000s in the air for 2012 as the Bulldogs eye another program first– four NCAA Tournament appearances in a five year stretch.

It’s been a great thrill for me to call so many great momentsthrough the years, and I’m fully confident that this will be a sea-son to remember.

There’s no denying it. Athens is a town of mov-ers and shakers and is unlike anywhere else. Taking a closer look at some of the people who make it so unique revealed that there seem to be quite a few couples that are hard at work making sure local businesses thrive in the Athens community. Dr. Ken Cook of Chiropractic Works and Kate Cook, owner of ARTini’s, are not only two successful business owners in their own right, but they are quite the Athens power couple when you put them together. Ken has a long-standing history with not only Athens, but also the University of Georgia. He was a scholarship gymnast here and graduated from the University in 1987 with a degree in exercise physiology. After graduating Life Chiropractic College in 1992, Ken stayed in Atlanta where he eventually met and married his wife, Kate. The two lived together in Alpharetta until the opportunity to take over a practice in Athens presented

interned for when he was in college. The couple decided it was time for a change and found themselves back in Athens in 2009. When talking to Ken about what he offers his patients, it’s hard to ignore the passion he has for both

sees some of the same patients today that he treated as an intern. Having suffered injuries of his own as a college athlete, he provides his clients a unique blend of chiro-practic, exercise physiology and rehabilitative techniques. He is also the only spinal decompression expert for

non-surgical treatment of lower back disc conditions here

BrainCore clinic treating conditions such as ADD/ADHD,

As Ken was busy with his practice, Kate be-

moved to Athens. Although she loved her job and the people she was able to be around everyday, she knew there was something missing. When a friend told her about a place she had visited in Denver that would com-bine Kate’s passion for art, her talent and what seemed like a lot of fun, Kate decided to take a risk and open her own business.

ARTini’s, which will be celebrating its 10 month anniversary this February, gives people a unique art-based experience here in Athens. Kate says, “being that there are a lot of these concepts out there, we’ve tried to set ourselves apart by being a gallery as well and hosting local art.” During an evening at ARTini’s, Kate, or one of her other two staff members, will instruct you step by step on creating your own work of art and then you get to leave with your creation at the end of the night. On top of that, you also get the opportunity to be exposed to some local artists you might not get to see otherwise. It’s

get to sip wine while you paint doesn’t hurt either. As they seem to be completely invested in their growing businesses, a night off doesn’t come often, but when it does, they love the chance to hang out in Athens with friends. Some of their favorite restaurants include Farm 255, The National and The Royal Peasant. When they feel like dancing, Kate claims Go Bar is the best and only place to go, adding that they play the perfect mix of music. It was clear talking to both Ken and Kate that they love what they do and the town they do it in, but also that they have tremendous love and respect for each other. Ever the team, Ken is Kate’s “free help” when she has a lot on her plate and he made sure to mention she logged long hours too, helping him get his practice going. An obvious power couple, they might just be the perfect couple too.

Baseball

Baseball is about to get started and it can’t come soon enough. The first se-ries of the year will begin against Presbyterian College on February 17.They’ll be in town all weekend and then in-state opponent Georgia Statewill visit the friendly confines of Foley Field on Wednesday, February 22.The Diamond Dogs will stay in Athens the rest of the month with Winthrop,Savannah State and Western Carolina coming into town. This is an impor-tant season for Coach Perno after he received a good bit of criticism duringthe 2011 season. But with so much adversity the team has faced over thepast few years, it’s hard to fault him. He’s kept the team together and actu-ally had the guys playing good baseball toward the end of the season lastyear. Now, the expectations are higher. With Michael Pallazzone headlining, the weekend starters will be some of the best in the SEC. And then ofcourse, you have my good buddy Tyler Maloof shutting the door as thecloser in the bullpen. Hopefully the beautiful weather we’ve been having inAthens will stick around a little while longer and we will get to see somequality baseball played at Foley Field in the next month.

Men’s Basketball

It’s been a tough year so far for the Hoop Dawgs and Coach Fox knows it.He’s been pretty verbal about his disappointment in his team’s performancethis year. But there is plenty of time left in the season for the team to im-press him and the fans as well. The first opportunity for that will comeagainst Arkansas on February 8. After that home game, the team will travelto Mississippi State on the 11th and South Carolina on the 15th. Then, theywill come back home to Athens to face Vanderbilt before finishing out therest of February with games against LSU and Florida. It’s not the toughestschedule left but it certainly isn’t easy. The team should be able to pull out awin against South Carolina with a fairly easy level of comfort. The rest ofthe games listed are going to be tough tests; particularly those that are onthe road. It’s turned out to be a re-building year for the Hoop Dawgs, butthe pieces (and coach are there) to possibly turn what has been a somewhatboring season into an exciting one as the SEC tournament quickly ap-proaches.

Men’s Tennis

You heard it here first. The men’s tennis team is on the fast track to AN-OTHER national title. Coach Manny Diaz is the best in the business and hasthese guys playing some top notch tennis in Athens. Sadio Doumbia andHernus Pieters are leading this team on their quest for top honors in thecountry. Through their first four matches of the season, the team has wonall of their matches by a 7-0 margin. The last time they did that to start theseason was in 2007 when John Isner led the team to an undefeated, nationalchampion season. The energy level on the court is through the roof forthese guys because they know the kind of the talent they have on the team. One of the biggest surprises has been University of Illinois transfer KUSingh, who has stepped in and played exceptionally well in the singleslineup. Right now, Singh and the rest of the team are in the midst of theirindoor schedule. They will take on William & Mary on February 10 andthen on Valentine’s Day, they have a match against Georgia Tech in Athens. So grab your sweetheart for a tennis date at the Lindsey Hopkins TennisCenter to support the Georgia tennis team.

Gym Dogs

The Gym Dogs are also in the midst of a championship type of season. They’ve recently beaten Auburn and LSU by comfortable margins. On Feb-ruary 18, the Gym Dogs will be hosting their annual “Pinkout Meet” againstKentucky. This is a great event. The Gym Dogs will team up with Athens Re-gional Medical Center to raise money and awareness in the fight againstbreast cancer. Last year, the team wore pink leotards for the meet. If GymDog meets weren’t already popular enough, this will put an even higher pre-mium on tickets. The squad will travel to Florida after that on the 24th tofinish up the SEC portion of their schedule. But, the SEC Championship iscoming up at the end of March and this year it’s just down the road at theGwinnett Arena in Duluth.

Spotlight on Mike FitzgeraldMike Fitzgerald was born in Tennessee and raised in Florida. However, he has spent many years as an Athens local supporting the Bulldogs. Mike, a true dog fan should give everyone some encouragement to go support the dogs. Not only in football, but it all the dif-ferent athletic programs the University of Georgia has to offer.

Have you always been a UGA fan?I was a Citadel Bulldog before I was a Georgia Bulldog. My family was UGA oriented and I always loved the excitement around UGA football. I wore Andy Johnson’s #14 jersey throwing plastic footballs in what then was the Stegeman parking lot before the games.

What is your favorite moment in UGA football history?Well there are so many memorable Herschel Walker moments. However the toss sweep when no one could catch him is probably my all time favorite. I also remember David Duke’s QB to Freddie Lane #4 down the sidelines.

Since we just had signing day, what kind of season do you think we will have?We will always be competitive. Mark Richt is a class act and Momma’s want their boys to play for him. If all comes down to coaching, everyone has good athletes. Todd Grantham the defensive coordinator is the man. I love our defense, and to answer, you need some luck, always, but we should have a great season though.

How often do you attend other athletic events?

over elbow to elbow with the masses. However, I do need to be fed occasionally with the excitement of the arena.

Who is your all time favorite UGA fan?My all time favorite UGA fan would have to be a tie between John

because we both share a deep competitiveness with Georgia Tech.
